A Gatophage in Campiglia Marittima

Campiglia Marittima is a village in the Italian province of Livorno. Last Tuesday a young culture-enricher from the Ivory Coast killed and cooked a cat over a makeshift fire near the station in Campiglia Marittima, outraging several passers-by, who used their phones to take videos of the incident. The police briefly detained the puir wee bairn, but released him without charge, since apparently there was no violation of any law.

Man who cooked a cat at Campiglia Marittima

Since this morning, a video has been circulating, posted by a Facebook user, in which a man can be seen who is cooking or burning a cat at Campiglia Marittima. According to the press agency ANSA the man killed the cat and started to cook it lighting a fire on the sidewalk near the city station (Livorno/Leghorn). And from what has been reconstructed by the Carabinieri, who intervened this morning after more notifications, and who have identified the perpetrator as a 21-year-old foreigner who will be reported for killing an animal. The young man was then accompanied to the Carabinieri station pending clarification of his status in Italy. At the moment, he does not appear to be listed as legal. The Carabinieri intervened this morning shortly after 7 in response to numerous calls from citizens.

According to what the mayor of Campiglia Marittima, Alberta Ticciati, wrote, the man has been identified but not arrested. Repubblica Firenze (Florence) writes that the young African man is 23 years of age and comes from the Ivory Coast, and confirms that there has been no arrest because the laws do not apply.

He was a resident at a reception center in the area of Livorno from which he left (or was kicked out — an aspect to be clarified) and now is listed as without fixed abode. The young man has made an application for refugee status, but the request was rejected, and he presented an appeal: the proceeding is now at the Tribunal of Florence. There has been no arrest, as Ceccardi writes (no violation is specified in article 544 bis of the penal code, explain the investigators), but there is a report with release.

Article 544 bis of the penal code specifies that anyone who, out of cruelty or without necessity, causes the death of an animal may be punished by a period of incarceration from four months to two years. The episode has been posted on the Facebook pages of Susanna Ceccardi and Matteo Salvini complete with video.

“A chilling episode in its brutality, but unfortunately all true,” also writes Susanna Ceccardi. “I congratulate the Carabinieri who took the torturer into custody; now we ask for punishment as an example, because in our civilization the domestic animals are left alone and deserve maximum humaneness and respect for all the unconditional love they offer without asking for anything in return,” concludes the candidate for the Lega in the next regional elections in Tuscany.

The story has also been propagated by Matteo Salvini, who increased the dose: “An upsetting scene, cruel and monstrous this morning in Tuscany, near Livorno. They tell me that the delinquent will be arrested, I hope that will be confirmed. It merits jail, and, if he immigrated illegally, expulsion; we don’t want to see him walking around again!”

Both speak of an arrest which in reality has not occurred.

Italy is Shut Down — Except for the Trial of Matteo Salvini

Back in 2018, when he was still Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini blocked an NGO migrant-rescue ship from docking at an Italian port to offload its cargo of cultural enrichment. A progressive prosecutor in Sicily took it upon himself to lay a charge of kidnapping against Mr. Salvini for refusing to allow all those puir wee bairns to debark. For the past two years the wheels of Italian “justice” have been grinding ever-so-slowly against the former interior minister (see previous posts Matteo Salvini: I Feel Sorry for the Prosecutor of Agrigento, Matteo Salvini to be Prosecuted, and Giorgia Meloni: “Italy is Treated Like the World’s Laughingstock”).

Now it seems Mr. Salvini’s trial will be coming up shortly, based on what he says in the following video. Many thanks to FouseSquawk for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Dore Gold Speaks About Jew-Hatred in Europe

Dore Gold is an Israeli diplomat, a former ambassador who is currently the President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

The following video was recorded during the same event in Italy at which Matteo Salvini spoke. In it Mr. Dore discusses Jew-hatred in Europe, and also the threat to Israel posed by Iran. He is speaking in English, but the Italian voice-over in the video all but obliterates the audio of his remarks.

Matteo Salvini’s Complete Speech on Israel and Jew-Hatred

On Monday I posted an excerpt from a speech about Jew-hatred given in the Italian Senate by former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. The video below shows the entirety of Mr. Salvini’s remarks.

The full text hasn’t completely assuaged my reservations about outlawing opposition to the existence of the State of Israel. I can (grudgingly) admit to a very narrow window of necessity to criminalize any interference in the execution of a sovereign state’s foreign policy as it pertains to Israel — but that’s it. And even that gives me First Amendment heartburn.

In any case, the complete speech is now available, and you can judge for yourselves. Many thanks to FouseSquawk for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Matteo Salvini Speaks Out Against Jew-Hatred

I have a high regard for Matteo Salvini, the former Italian Interior Minister and the leader of the Lega. However, in the following video (which is an excerpt from a speech given on January 16 in the Italian Senate) there is a significant point on which I disagree with him.

Among other things, Mr. Salvini puts forward the idea that it should be against the law to “oppose the existence of the State of Israel as the home of the Jewish people”. There are several reasons why I find this idea repugnant.

Firstly, as far as I know, the only such laws being proposed concern the Jewish people and Israel. I don’t think anyone wants to criminalize, say, opposition to the creation of Kurdistan as a homeland for the Kurds. And there are so many others — Frisia, the Sami, the Navajo, Tibet, Chechnya, and Baluchistan, just to name a few. Should we pass laws against opposition to the creation (or re-establishment) of homelands for all those peoples? If not, how can we pass laws against opposing the State of Israel and still keep any semblance of fairness?

Secondly, as a dyed-in-the-wool American I have a deep loathing for any legal restrictions on speech. I’m willing to concede that it may be a good idea to outlaw explicit, direct, and immediate incitement to violence, but that’s about it. I find Jew-hatred to be vile, but I think Jew-haters should be able to express their vitriol whenever they want without legal hindrance.

This video is a brief segment from a much longer speech. Vlad thinks a complete transcript might show that Mr. Salvini only intends to criminalize organizations that attempt to interfere with Italian foreign policy concerning the sovereign State of Israel. If that turns out to be the case, then it’s a somewhat different matter. But for the nonce all we have is what you see below.

Below is an interview with Mr. Salvini on the same topic from La Stampa, also translated by FouseSquawk:

Salvini: “Anti-Semitism in Italy? It’s the fault of Muslim immigrants”

Ex-minister of Interior: “With me as prime minister, Jerusalem will be recognized as capital of Israel”

Tel Aviv: If he becomes prime minister, Matteo Salvini will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. That is what the secretary of the Lega said in an interview today with the newspaper Israel Ha-Yoom, in which he called on the EU to ban BDS, the boycott movement against Israel. A few days after the Senate conference on anti-Semitism, Salvini has reiterated to the newspaper — considered close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — that the Lega has no ties with political organizations like Casa Pound, Forza Nuova and Fiamma, which are defined by the newspaper as “anti-Semitic.”

To a question about the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe, which will be discussed January 22-23 on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Salvini said, “In my opinion, this has to do with the strengthening of extremism and Islamic fanaticism in recent years. It is very important to stress,” he added, “that this is connected to the fact that certain elements in the academic world and the media are mobilized against Israel and they create a hatred towards Israel in order to justify anti-Semitism.”

“Currently, the massive presence of immigrants coming from Muslim countries,” he continued after also recalling the existence of minor political Nazi and communist political movements, contributes to the spread of anti-Semitism also in Italy. “There is,” he complained, “an anti-Semitism on the extreme right and the extreme left. We think of Jeremy Corbyn or leftist activists in Germany who don’t want to be like the Nazis, yet they are found boycotting Israeli products.” To a question on the relations of the Lega with “anti-Semitic political groups”, Salvini answered that “we have no connections with those organizations. In the elections, parties like Casa Pound, Forza Nuova, and Fiamma come out against us.” This shows “we have no ties to them.”

The Flood of Immigrants Into Italy Has Officially Resumed

Now that Matteo Salvini is no longer Interior Minister, and the Lega has no part in crafting policies on refugees, the Italian government is once again allowing the “rescue” ships belonging to NGOs — including some of the same ones interdicted by Mr. Salvini last year — to land in Italian ports.

“You Block Documents, We Block the Streets”

Illegal migrants in Calabria and Puglia engaged in protests and blocked the streets as they demanded that they be given immigration documents IMMEDIATELY. Former Interior Minister and leader of the Lega Party Matteo Salvini tweeted video of the protests. In the text of his tweet:

Illegal immigrants attack our police with the shout, “ Documents immediately for all”. But for the left, Italy’s priority is to abolish the Security Decrees…

Salvini is Gone, and the Flood of Migrants Resumes

The following video reports on North Africans who are now flooding into the Italian island of Lampedusa, or are waiting on the Libyan shore for passage across the Mediterranean. They’ve all heard that Matteo Salvini is no longer the interior minister, so they expect that they will be allowed to land in Italy and then be processed expeditiously so they can travel to their new homes in Europe.

Viktor Orbán in Rome: Forget Migrant Distribution Quotas. We Need Deportation Quotas!

Last Saturday Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was invited to speak at an annual event hosted by the Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) in Rome. If Italians are ever allowed to vote again, the FdI will almost certainly become part of the next governing coalition, along with Matteo Salvini and the Lega.

Mr. Orbán gave a rousing speech that was punctuated about five minutes in by the Italian audience singing a popular political anthem (in Italian) about the Hungarian uprising against the Soviets in 1956. When you watch that part of the excerpt below, you’ll see Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the Fratelli d’Italia, stand up and sing along with everyone else.

Angela Merkel: Stop Salvini!

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is using her clout as the most powerful political leader in the EU to try to make sure that Matteo Salvini is kept out of the Italian government, and the new M5S-PD coalition firmly established.

Many thanks to MissPiggy for translating this article from Compact Online:

Merkel Promised Italy Debt Relief if Salvini Falls

by Karel Meissner
September 5, 2019

So far, the intervention of EU Budget Commissioner Günther Oettinger in Italy’s domestic policy has already been regarded as maximum audacity: in the SWR daily he described the divide between the Lega and the 5-Star Movement as a “good development”, if it leads to “a pro-European government” that “shows where the limits are to a populist who makes politics in swimming trunks”.

And so that the Social Democrats (PD) and five-stars, whose objectives are hardly compatible, would nevertheless go to bed with each other, Oettinger promised a fat reward: they would certainly be prepared “to do everything to make the work of the new Italian government easier and thus reward it”.

But even this audacity was outbid again, according to a report by Italy’s Il Giornale. And that by a call from Angela Merkel (CDU) to the PD! On the phone, the Chancellor is said to have described the reward that Oettinger had hinted at. Salvini had to be stopped “at all costs”. In return, she said, she had granted the Social Democrats, for example, relief on the national debt, which the country had previously been denied in Brussels.

Merkel has thus once again made it clear that she does not care at all about the will of the voters. According to a survey, Salvini is Italy’s most popular politician, while the Social Democrats were unambiguously voted out of office recently.

Migrant “Rescues” Resume in the Mediterranean

As former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini indicated yesterday, now that he is no longer in charge of interdicting the migrant-ferry vessels, the NGO boats are once again out in force, “rescuing” people in the Mediterranean. However, since the new government in Rome has not yet been officially formed, Italian ports are still closed to the “refugees”. The following Spanish news report provides some details on the latest rescues off the coast of Spain, which is presumably where the new arrivals will be offloaded.

“Sovereignty Belongs to the People”

Matteo Salvini has resigned as Interior Minister of Italy, and a new government will be formed, a coalition between the populist 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the leftist Partito Democratico (PD).

Mr. Salvini initiated the current political crisis by calling for a no-confidence vote in the government in which he served, the coalition between the Lega (his party) and the M5S. Either he miscalculated, thinking that his move would result in new elections (which the Lega would almost certainly win), or he was making a strategic move, expecting a landslide for his party in a future election.

The former seems the most likely explanation. His reactions since the M5S and the PD came to terms seem those of a man who was both surprised and dismayed by what happened. However, that may have simply been theater on his part — the outcome may be exactly what he had been expecting all along.

There’s no doubt that he’s right about the influence of Brussels in the formation of the M5S-PD coalition. The mandarins of the EU may not have created the coalition, but I’m certain that they lobbied for it.

The new government will be staffed by a set of unlikely bedfellows. To put it in an American context: it’s as if Ron Paul and Bernie Sanders had formed a working alliance. The new cabinet will be as unstable as an atom of francium-223.

The two videos below show the reactions of Matteo Salvini and Giorgia Meloni (leader of the Fratelli d’Italia, and a natural ally of the Lega). Many thanks to FouseSquawk for the translations, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling.

Ms. Meloni’s response:

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has expressed his continuing support for Matteo Salvini via an official letter. Below is the English announcement and content of the letter as published on the official website of the Hungarian Government (hat tip László):

Viktor Orbán’s message to Matteo Salvini: regardless of political developments, we look upon you as a brother-in-arms

August 29, 2019

At noon on Thursday Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief, informed the Hungarian news agency MTI that Prime Minister and President of Fidesz Viktor Orbán has written a letter to Matteo Salvini — the leader of the Italian party Lega, and until today a member of Italy’s government. In his letter Mr. Orbán expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the work recently done by Mr. Salvini for Italy and the whole of Europe, including Hungary. Mr. Orbán wrote, “I wish to assure you that we Hungarians will never forget that you were the first Western European leader who sought to stop the influx of illegal migrants into Europe across the Mediterranean.”

In his letter to Mr. Salvini, the Hungarian prime minister continued: “Regardless of internal political developments in Italy and the fact that we belong to different European party families, we look upon you as a brother-in-arms in our battles for the preservation of European Christian heritage and the halting of migration. I wish you much success and good health in carrying out your future tasks.”
