Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/30/2016

Nancy Pelosi has fended off a challenge to her position of Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, winning 68% of the vote from her fellow representatives. However, this means that almost a third of the Democrats in the House were dissatisfied with her performance.

In other news, the Swedish government is evicting the disabled and people with dementia from group homes to free up space to house some of the thousands of migrants who have arrived in the country.

The Barbarians Who Sacked Rome Came Into the Empire as Refugees

In his latest essay, Emmet Scott explores the parallels between the barbarian invasions of Rome in the 4th century A.D. with the migrant invasions of Europe in the 21st century.

The Barbarians Who Sacked Rome Came Into the Empire as Refugees

by Emmet Scott

Over the past century many commentators have remarked on the parallels between the modern West and ancient Rome in its period of decadence and decline. The most influential proponent of the idea, perhaps, has been Oswald Spengler, whose Decline of the West is now widely viewed as a classic of conservative thought. As might be imagined, “progressives” have consistently sneered at the idea, but, then again, they would scarcely be progressives if they didn’t. One is reminded of the Chinese saying: “When a fool sees the Tao [Truth] he laughs. If he did not laugh it would not be the Tao.”

The parallels between decadent Rome and the modern West are actually there. And they are uncanny, and they are becoming more numerous by the day.

In 410 A.D. the walls of Rome were breached and the city plundered by a barbarian army under the leadership of Alaric the Goth. This was the first time since the Gallic sack of the city around 390 B.C. that the imperial metropolis had been entered by a hostile enemy. The fall of Rome shocked the world at the time, but what is not generally known nowadays is that the Gothic army that carried out the atrocity had entered the Empire thirty years earlier as refugees.

Until the second half of the fourth century the Goths had inhabited a vast swathe of territory taking what now comprises Romania as well as the Ukraine. In 375, however, they were attacked by the Huns, a tribe of nomad warriors from central Asia who had been moving steadily westwards during the preceding century and a half. In the ensuing war the Goths suffered a crushing defeat and large numbers of them fled westwards towards the Roman Empire. By the summer of 376 an enormous host of Goths, generally estimated at around 100,000, arrived at the River Danube and pleaded with the Roman authorities to be allowed into the Empire.

The Eastern Emperor Valens, at that moment stationed in Antioch, eventually gave permission for the Therving tribe, which comprised about half the total number of Gothic refugees, to be ferried across the river. For at least two centuries prior to this the Romans had actively recruited barbarians into the army (necessary because of Rome’s abysmally low birth-rate) and Valens reasoned that the Goths would provide a valuable pool of new and cheap recruits. The operation to ferry these people across the Danube was an enormous and costly one and took several weeks to complete and, as Ammianus Marcellinus sarcastically comments, “diligent care was taken that no future destroyer of the Roman state should be left behind, even if he were smitten by a fatal disease.”

Unsurprisingly, within a few weeks of their entry into the Empire, the first clashes with the Roman authorities occurred, and by the end of the summer the Goths were at war with Rome. After several military disasters, the Emperor Valens made a hasty return to Constantinople to personally take charge of the campaign, and was killed in battle at Adrianople in 378 — just two years after he had sanctioned the mass immigration.

François Fillon: Radical Islam is Contrary to the Values of the Republic

A few days ago François Fillon won the primary election for the French Republican Party (formerly the UMP), and will become his party’s candidate in next spring’s presidential election. Given the abysmal standing of the current president, François Hollande, the socialists are not expected to make it through the first round of voting. The final contest is likely to see Mr. Fillon facing off against Marine Le Pen of the Front National, and Mr. Fillon is currently favored to win.

The words about Islam spoken by François Fillon in the following speech are bracing, especially coming from a candidate who is likely to be the next president of France. However, as I recall, Mr. Fillon has changed his tune on Islam from what he said a few years ago. Our French readers can correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t he singing from a different hymnal when he was prime minister under Nicolas Sarkozy?

How to Score With German Chicks if You’re a Culture-Enricher

The German government wants to prevent a repeat of what happened in major cities last year on New Year’s Eve. Here are some of the planned measures.

After more than 1,000 women were mugged, sexually assaulted, and raped by migrants last New Year’s Eve, the city of Cologne is considering using helicopters, registering all newcomers, and setting up “women retreats” to keep females safe this year.

Hmm… “Women retreats”. Does that mean “no males allowed”, i.e. purdah for the women on New Year’s Eve? Because unless the rules have changed, the German authorities can’t permit native German men to enter an area while keeping migrant men out — that would be discrimination, don’t you know.

The following two videos describe an initiative designed to teach the “New Germans” the correct form of “flirt” behavior. That is, explain to them when it’s not OK to grope, assault, or rape a cute girl you’ve just seen for the first time.

I don’t know about this approach. Does anyone really think it will cut down on the groping and raping by culture-enrichers when Silvester Night rolls around again next month?

The first video is in German. Many thanks to Egri Nök for the translation:

The second is a French report, translated by Ava Lon:

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/29/2016

Commercial vessels and ships operated by charity groups rescued 1,400 migrants yesterday in the Mediterranean, bringing them safely to Italy. This year has seen a record 170,000+ migrant arrivals, with a month still to go.

In other news, working on the assumption that Donald Trump will be inaugurated as president, the celebrity talking head Keith Olbermann suggested that the 25th Amendment may provide the easiest and fastest way to remove President Trump from office. The 1967 amendment established procedures for removing a president from office when he “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office”. Mr. Olbermann said he thinks it will be a simple matter to prove that Mr. Trump is mentally unfit for the job.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Borisov: We Will Deport Them

As reported here several times this fall (see the links at the bottom of this post), Bulgaria has been plagued by diseased, criminal, violent, rioting culture-enrichers who live at the asylum center in the town of Harmanli.

After the most recent riots at the camp — in which only luck prevented any police officers from being killed — Prime Minister Boyko Borisov announced his intention to take decisive action. If he follows through with his plans, he will be the first political leader in Europe to actually do something about the masses of criminal Muslims within his borders — he intends to get them out of the country.

Below are two video clips with excerpts from press conferences held by Mr. Borisov. Many thanks to Tanya T for the translations, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling.

A Burka for Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa was the Regent of Austria and the Empress of the Holy Roman Empire during the middle of the18th century. Her statue stands on a tall pedestal at the center of Maria-Theresien-Platz in the heart of Vienna.

In the wee hours of this morning activists from the anti-Islamization group Identitäre Bewegung — the Austrian chapter of the Generation Identitaire movement — covered the statue of Maria Theresa with a burka (a niqab, actually, but the article calls it a burka).

Many thanks to Ava Lon for translating this article from Unzensuriert:

Action against the loss of national identity: Generation Identitaire conceal Maria Theresa with gigantic burka

(Caption: To point out loss of national identity through Muslim immigration, Generation Identitaire concealed the statue of Maria Theresa with a burka.)

In another spectacular event, on the 29th of November members of the Identity Movement climbed up the statue of the former Regent of Austria, Maria Theresa. They concealed the monument at the Museumsplatz with a gigantic burka in order to specifically warn against being supplanted by Muslims.

The inspired Identitaires managed to cover the 20-meter-high Maria Theresa at night by means of a crane.

No-Go Zones in Berlin for DHL Express

DHL is a German-based courier service with operations all over the world. Although the German government denies that there are any “no-go zones” in Germany, that’s not true for DHL Express, which now declines to deliver packages to certain culturally-enriched areas of Berlin.

Many thanks to Nash Montana for translating this article from RBB.online:

DHL Express isn’t delivering everything in Wedding

November 23, 2016

The DHL subsidiary Express doesn’t deliver parcels or packages in the Wedding district of Berlin. The reason is the allegedly increasing number fraud attempts and attacks on the drivers.

The DHL Express delivery service does not offer to deliver packets and parcels to the front door in the Wedding district of Berlin. “Unfortunately, there have been attacks on couriers in the past, and there have also been attempts at fraud. In order to ensure the courier’s security and that the shipments for the customers arrive safely, we have decided in this particular case,” said DHL’s spokeswoman Anke Blenn to the RBB.

The Berliner Kurier was the first one to report on this. According to them, DHL Express disallows the delivery of packages in at least three Berlin neighborhoods; certain postal code areas are allegedly no longer approached. They are all allegedly in Wedding. It was also said that DHL stopped delivery in “violent neighborhoods”. The company denied this representation of the facts: Only the subsidiary DHL Express is allegedly concerned, it said. In addition, it is allegedly about “a few individual cases”.

Losers of Modernization? It’s the Islam, Stupid

Below is the latest from Anabel Schunke, as posted on Roland Tichy’s blog. Many thanks to JLH for the translation.

The deceptive security of the familiar

Losers of Modernization? It’s the Islam, Stupid

by Anabel Schunke
November 23, 2016

It’s not modernization that frightens me, Mrs. Merkel. It is the uncritical attitude, the silence of our establishment about the true problem — the reactionaries of Islam.

Merkel wants a fourth term. Anything else from the cowardly, tunnel-vision CDU would be very surprising. It seems like forever that the party has been leaning on the allegedly sturdy shoulders of the chancellor, and hoping for security. But she herself has caused the lack of security, and now there are no longer any certainties. Ultimately, the question is: who else should do it, other than the one who tipped the balance?

Oh, how people in Germany turned up their noses at the United States. Because, in the end, only these two hated candidates were left. As if Germany were any better. As if the haggling about the presidential election and Merkel’s renewed candidacy had not demonstrated what a sad swamp of mediocrity — indeed underperformance — our political landscape is. It is a land where, ultimately, the decisive posts are held by a former bookseller from Würselen who resembles an undertaker, a failed teacher who derides some of the population as a “pack,” and two people with upside-down smiles, of whom one refuses to congratulate the future president of the US, while the other, during one of the country’s greatest crises — which she herself has brought about — is blathering that digitalizing and insufficient broadband have caused the crisis. As she always was, Merkel is the one-eyed person in the land of the blind. The fact that she is clung to despite her proven incompetence when pro-active moves are required of politicians, despite her estrangement from reality and inability to recognize people’s genuine problems, says less about Merkel and more about the political system and especially about her potential competitors.

How little self-confidence must a country have, how anxious and cowardly must a society be, to listen to such people? A society that has put up with all the impudence, the arrogance of recent months, and at the next opportunity checks the same box again?

Voting for the Horror We Know Out of Fear of the Horror We Don’t Know

This, in truth, demonstrates how great the fear of freedom is, and how much perceived security is still preferred in this country. So aside from the question of who else is there, there is another component: the desire for predictability. Another four years with Merkel and the great coalition is probably bad, but they are at least predictable, and in such a time of global terrorism, Trump and Brexit, when nothing seems predictable anymore, we long for the familiar. Even when much of the insecurity was caused by those who offer perceived security through predictability.

Jean-Claude Juncker, the jovial and bibulous president of the European Commission, is apparently panicking over the prospect of more Brexit-style referendums in the EU. Austria may be the next to hold a referendum about EU membership if Norbert Hofer wins next month’s presidential election. Mr. Juncker is now pleading with EU member states not to hold any more consultative plebiscites asking their voters if they want to continue in the EU.

In migration news, Texas Governor Greg Abbott promises to sign a law banning “sanctuary cities” for illegal aliens in his state.

Jihad at Ohio State University

There was a car-and-machete jihad incident this morning at Ohio State University in Columbus. A young Somali-American ran his car into a crowd of students. He then jumped out, slashing at them with his knife or machete, before being shot dead by an alert police officer. Ten people were wounded (some versions say nine), but we can thank the Lord that only the perpetrator was killed.

The late culture-enricher has been identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, variously described as 18, 19, or 20 years old, depending on which article you read.

I’ve been following this story since the news first broke, but it kept morphing, so I hesitated to post on it. It seems to have settled down now, however. Here’s a representative sample from the latest information, as reported by the Associated Press:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Latest on an attack at the Ohio State University campus (all times local):

4:30 p.m.

Authorities say the officer who killed an attacker at Ohio State University was a university police officer who’d been on the job for less than two years.

Department of Public Safety Director Monica Moll identified the officer as 28-year-old Alan Horujko. She says he started on the Ohio State police force in January 2015.

Ohio State Police Chief Craig Stone says it was fortunate there was a nearby gas leak that the officer had gone to investigate. Stone says it helped position Horujko to respond to the attack so quickly.

Those injured in the attack included an Ohio State faculty member, four graduate students and three undergrads.

Authorities say they were able to get photos of the suspect’s vehicle driving onto campus and confirmed only one person was in the car.
___

4:10 p.m.

A director of public safety says a man who drove a car into pedestrians and began stabbing people at Ohio State was a student at the school.

Ohio State Department of Public Safety Director Monica Moll also identified the now-deceased suspect as Abdul Razak Ali Artan.

A U.S. official earlier told The Associated Press that he was born in Somalia and living in the United States as a legal permanent resident. The official wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Authorities say Artan was shot to death by a police officer Monday morning shortly after he drove up onto a curb into pedestrians, got out of the car and began stabbing people with a butcher knife.

Nine people were injured, including one critically.
___

3:20 p.m.

A U.S. official has identified the suspect in the Ohio State attack that injured nine people as a man of Somali descent.

The official identified Abdul Razak Ali Artan as the now-deceased suspect. He was born in Somalia and living in the United States as a legal permanent resident. It was unclear when Artan came to the U.S.

The official wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

A second law enforcement official confirmed that authorities believe the suspect’s name is Abdul Artan. That official also wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Authorities say the suspect was shot to death Monday by a police officer after driving up onto a curb and into pedestrians and attacking people with a knife.

There are several loose ends and strange unresolved details to the incident. The perp was initially identified as Ali Muhammad, based on the license plate on his car, as reported over a police scanner. An hour or so later the ID changed to Abdul Artan. Yet the car he was driving seems to have been registered to Ali Muhammad. Where is Mr. Muhammad now? And what was his relationship to the late suspect? I haven’t seen anything further on him.

Early reports said that there were “at least two people” in the vehicle that rammed the building. However, later accounts revised the story to say that Mr. Artan was the only one. As you saw in the AP story, there is allegedly (CCTV?) footage confirming that only one person was in the Honda that drove into the crowd.

Just for the record, the screen caps below show two stories, one from The Columbus Dispatch and the other from Fox News (the story at the link is different now), that included the eyewitness reports about there being two people in the car:

The early reports said the crowd of students had been in the courtyard because someone had activated an alarm indicating that there was a gas leak. This was walked back later in the morning, however — the alarm was said to have been a “drill”.

Yet Alan Horujko, the policeman who killed Abdul Artan, was only on the scene because he was responding to a reported gas leak.

So what’s the deal? Was there an alarm or not? If so, did Mr. Artan have an accomplice who pulled it?

Along those lines, there’s a final, tantalizing loose end: Two men were arrested in the parking garage after Mr. Artan was shot, as reported by The Daily Mail. The Mail story included these photos of the arrests:

These guys may simply have had the misfortune to be carrying backpacks or briefcases in the vicinity of an “active shooter” event. If so, they were probably released not long afterwards without being charged.

In the “fog of war” during attacks like this one, there are often reports of multiple suspects. Later they turn out to have been mistaken, and the crowd is winnowed down to a single perp, who usually winds up dead. But this time there is actual footage of these guys being arrested. Who are they? What happened to them? I haven’t heard anything more.

Other sources:

There’s more coming up. As this post goes to press, there is a report about a Facebook post alleged to be by Mr. Artan. But I’ll cut the story off here; I’m sure this won’t be the last time I write about him.

Hat tips: For the AP article, Dean; for the videos, Vlad Tepes.

If You Live in Schwerin, Don’t Walk Your Dog

A gang of culture-enrichers set upon a dog-walker in the German town of Schwerin, beating and stabbing him. In the following report their motive is not entirely clear, but it seems the issue may have been the dog.

Many thanks to Egri Nök for translating this article from Ostsee Zeitung (Baltic Sea Newspaper, East Germany):

Schwerin — Four men attack 29-year-old and hurt him badly

The man was walking his dog on Thursday evening, when he was approached by a group. Police are looking for witnesses.

Friday, 25.11.2016

Schwerin. Thursday evening a man was attacked and badly injured by four people. According to the police report, the 29-year-old was walking his dog in Hamburger Strasse around 9:30 PM, when the men approached him about his dog. The man shielded his dog and then was pushed, kicked, and beaten by the perpetrators. Furthermore, one of the men wounded the victim with a knife and inflicted slash wounds upon him. Then the perpetrators fled.

The 29-year-old had to be treated in hospital. Police are investigating for dangerous assault.

The perpetrators were apparently of Arab origin. One of the perpetrators is being described as follows: He is about 1.75m [5’ 7”] tall and of slim, athletic build. His age is estimated at 25. His hair is black, and at the time of the deed he was wearing a longish brown jacket and blue jeans.

Police are asking witnesses for leads and will accept them at the telephone number 0385-51 80 15 60, at the “Internetwache”, or any police station.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Most people in the Anglosphere know that William Shakespeare was born in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon. Or at least they used to know it — given that he’s a dead WASP, it may well be that children don’t learn much about the Bard nowadays in school.

Anyway, here’s a snip from the Wikipedia entry on Shakespeare’s birthplace:

Shakespeare’s Birthplace is a restored 16th-century half-timbered house situated in Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, where it is believed that William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and spent his childhood years. It is now a small museum open to the public and a popular visitor attraction, owned and managed by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. It has been referred to as “a Mecca for all lovers of literature”. [emphasis added]

These photos were taken last Friday in the courtyard behind the Shakespeare museum (except for the one immediately above, which is from the front of the building). The faces of the women have been blurred to protect the person who took the photo as a protection against possible legal action.

As you can see, the last line in the excerpt from the wiki is eerily apropos.

Two groups who visited the museum sent us reports on their experiences. The first report:

Full ninja outfit, prayer mats, the whole caboodle. To do what they were doing in a place closely associated with one of the great pinnacles of civilisation is pure provocation — a great big two-fingered salute to all of us. You can be sure that they had no interest in Shakespeare or in the values which his art represents.

We drew the situation to the attention of the management, not that there was much they could do. To their credit they heard us out and were kind enough to refrain from having us arrested on the grounds of racism. But their response was the usual mealy-mouthed claptrap — ‘they have to pray at certain times each day’ and ‘we are a diverse country’.

Neither of these points holds water. It’s laid down in Islamic doctrine that when in non-Muslim countries you bide your time and fit in with the local conditions until you’re strong enough and numerous enough to assert yourselves. The fact that some are so emboldened as to feel able to mount such public displays gives a clue to the way things are going. And the diversity argument is a bad joke.

Once these people get their feet under the table we can all kiss goodbye to ‘diversity’.

One feels disgust, but also pity for the girls who have been so brainwashed, not in some distant desert craphole, but in a country that once prided itself on its democracy and freedom. But most of all one feels ashamed that we have come down to this.

But let’s look on the bright side. I expect the Shakespeare heritage people will have learnt their lesson. Next time we visit Stratford they’ll have a fully equipped prayer room.

From the second group of visitors:
