Gates of Vienna News Feed 8/31/2013

Russian President Vladimir Putin has challenged the Obama administration to provide proof that the Syrian government carried out the recent gas attack that killed hundreds of people in Damascus. Meanwhile, President Obama has changed his stance on military action against Syria, and has asked Congress to vote on his proposed attack.

In other news, eighteen people were killed in two separate Taliban attacks, six when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a bank in Kandahar, and twelve as the result of a roadside bomb in Helmand Province.

Stalking the Mythical Islamophobe, Part 2

This post is the second in a series about the Turkish definition of the word “Islamophobia” presented at the OSCE meeting in Vienna on July 12, 2013. Previously: Part 1.

A Brief History of “Islamophobia”

As reported here last month, the Turkish representative at the OSCE “Supplementary Human Dimension” meeting in Vienna provided the conference with a long-awaited definition of “Islamophobia”:

Islamophobia is a contemporary form of racism and xenophobia motivated by unfounded fear, mistrust, and hatred of Muslims and Islam. Islamophobia is also manifested through intolerance, discrimination, unequal treatment, prejudice, stereotyping, hostility, and adverse public discourse. Differentiating from classical racism and xenophobia [sic], Islamophobia is mainly based on stigmatization of a religion and its followers, and as such, Islamophobia is an affront to the human rights and dignity of Muslims.

In later installments to this series we’ll take a detailed look at the components of the above definition. In the meantime, an examination of the historical record is instructive.

The term “Islamophobia” was coined a just over a century ago. The first recorded use of the word was in 1912, in French. The word reappeared occasionally in the 1920s and later in the century. Its original sense referred to a fear among modernized Muslims of the traditional forms of Islam, rather than an attitude towards Islam held by non-Muslims.

“Islamophobia” was not recorded in English until much later, and may well have been an independent coinage rather than a translation from the French. By the time it gained currency in English, the meaning had shifted to be more or less the one we know today. When the Runnymede Trust issued its landmark report [pdf] in 1997, “Islamophobia” meant a “shorthand way of referring to dread or hatred of Islam — and, by extension, to fear or dislike of all or most Muslims”.

As the British sociologist Chris Allen later wrote:

The Power of Projection, Coupled with the Power of Fear

Over the past few decades the European Left has perfected the art of intimidating its political opponents.

To force one’s ideological adversaries to surrender and slink away, it is necessary to field a credible deterrent force to accompany any verbal exhortations. For that reason, respectable far-Left socialist organizations and parties can count on rag-tag gangs of bully boys to do the dirty work of intimidation. In Britain, Hope not Hate and the Labour Party rely on the street thugs of Unite Against Fascism (UAF) to make life difficult for anyone who dares to question the Multicultural agenda. In Sweden, EXPO and the Socialists have Antifa (“anti-fascists”) conveniently to hand to rough up “fascists” and burn their property.

The Antifas are in fact widespread across northern Europe, and reliably appear whenever any group even slightly right-of-center gathers in large numbers. They rain missiles down upon the crowd, vandalize property, and harass the police. All leftist NGOs and Socialist parties depend on them, yet all can plausibly deny any connection with the storm troopers and their violent shenanigans.

Property owners are well aware of what they face if they host a conservative event on their premises. “Islamophobes” draw the most vicious opposition; any large crowd of Islam-critics is almost certain to face a violent response from the 21st century’s legions of brown-shirts.

All venue owners are familiar with the “anti-fascist” modus operandi: large crowds of “students” will rain fireworks down upon their “fascist” targets, attack the police, set fire to waste bins, overturn cars, break windows, and otherwise cause chaos and mayhem. In addition to the loss of income and the cost of repairs, a business may find its liability insurance policy canceled, or renewed only after a stiff premium increase. To add insult to injury, in some jurisdictions the police may present the venue and the event’s organizers with a bill for police overtime and other costs incurred by the municipality in suppressing the thugs.

So it’s no wonder that venue owners cancel events at the first hint of Islam-critical involvement. The Antifas make sure the event’s hosts are aware of what is coming by very publicly announcing their intentions and rallying the storm-troops. The “anti-fascists” project upon their intended targets their own characteristics of violent intolerance, and property owners react out of well-placed fear of what they are likely to face.

This is exactly what happened in anticipation of the visit by Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll to Denmark and Sweden. The venue in Malmö canceled a few days ago, and the venue in Copenhagen, upon being notified about what happens to anyone who dares to give the EDL a platform, has just followed suit.

The following article with the latest on these events was originally published yesterday in Dispatch International:

Dispatch International denied freedom of assembly after hate campaign

by Maria Celander

Self-styled “anti-fascists” are doing all they can to prevent English Defence League leaders Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll from speaking in Sweden and Denmark. First Folkets Hus in Malmö canceled the organizers’ booking, now the Odd Fellow Hall in Copenhagen has backed down.

“I know what you want, the same as all the other damned journalists that have called and wasted my time. I had my whole evening ruined because of this. I was to host a dinner for 200 guests and had to spend the whole night on this,” says an exhausted Göran Kryhl, CEO of Folkets Hus in Malmö, when Dispatch International calls.

DI: I see, but couldn’t you tell me what you said to the other journalists?

“That we don’t have the same ideology as they have and don’t stand for what they stand for.”

DI: But we have freedom of assembly in Sweden?

“They can have whatever meetings they want, but not when they hide behind something else as they did here.”

DI: What do you mean by hide? In what way did they hide?

“You know what, I’m tired of this. I don’t want to talk any more. Have a good one.”

Freedom of assembly and of speech is inscribed in both the Danish and Swedish constitutions. But that is of no consequence for certain groups known as “antiracist”. They have taken it upon themselves to meet people with other opinions by throwing eggs, stones and pieces of firework, heckling and as in this case by pure sabotage.

Under the slogan “No platform for racism!” the Danish Antifa (Anti-Fascist Action) — the equivalent of AFA in Sweden — urged to its followers to call and mail the Odd Fellow Hall in Copenhagen to force it to cancel the meeting which Dispatch International and the Swedish Free Press society has announced with EDL leaders Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll on September 29.

“Do you also think that it is a damned filthy business that the Odd Fellow lodge has rented its hall to racists? Call them at 33 11 27 78 or send them a mail at info@oddfellow.dk. The two racists were originally to speak in Malmö the day before but now anti-fascists have managed to get them thrown out. Let’s do the same in Copenhagen!” writes Antifa on its website.

Despite the votes against the Syrian war in the UN Security Council and the British Parliament, French President François Hollande says that he will stand staunchly with President Obama in his determination to unseat President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. Secretary of State John Kerry presented the administration’s evidence for the Syrian government’s complicity in the recent chemical attack, and promised that Syria would not be another Iraq.

In other news, the latest statistics indicate that 57% of babies born in London have mothers who were born abroad.

When Should a Book Not Be Written?

“A perversion of logic as much as a loss of courage”

Diana West spoke last night as a guest of Ahavath Torah Congregation in Stoughton, Massachusetts. Her topic was the continuing controversy over her book, American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character.

In the following clip you’ll hear Ms. West point out the manifest falsehoods that have been circulated about American Betrayal. They seem to represent an attempted “takedown” of her book, a deliberate assault intended to destroy her professional standing as a writer.

The author also explains how she fell into the research that eventually resulted in the book. She began by investigating an entirely different topic, the penetration of the United States government by agents of the Muslim Brotherhood, and followed the trail of evidence back to Communist penetration in the 1930s and 1940s. The parallels between the two cases are striking — each involves the subversion of our government by a totalitarian ideology that seeks the overthrow of our constitutional republic.

Many thanks to The United West for recording the event, and to Vlad Tepes for editing this excerpt:

I recommend watching the full two-hour video at United West. Diana West’s talk begins at about 12:30, and a Q&A follows her remarks. You’ll hear a lot about what what’s in the book, including some quotes read by the author, and more remarks about the nexus between what happened in the 1940s and the current “civilization jihad” against our country.

Cultural Contempt: All Things in Moderation

Our Israeli correspondent MC contrasts “moderate” multiculturalism, the kind he experiences in Sderot, with the “extreme” version, which forces white Westerners to hold their own culture in contempt.

Cultural Contempt: All Things in Moderation
by MC

I quite like the odd tipple, but I am well aware that the current alcohol predilection of the nation is not healthy. I am also a religious fanatic, but my religion is verbal, not physical. Whilst I might regale you with words, I am not going to behead you if you refuse to listen.

I respect moderation, and I respect self-control.

In fact, my culture is built around moderation and self-control. I was taught at school and at home that these were desirable values, and that in all things I should do as I would be done by.

As I got older, I found that my values and culture of moderation was under attack.

Last week my wife and I had a visit from three German ladies who are currently visiting Sderot, we were able to converse in a wonderful mixture of schoolboy German, schoolgirl English and basic Hebrew, not one of us shared a fluency in any language other than our mother tongues, but we shared a common set of values. Judeo-Christian values of common decency.

We dined together on the simple foods that we could afford, we drank bottled water (the tap water is fluoridated) and we conversed. We discussed Torah, and we discussed Yehushua Ha’Meshiac.

Seventy years ago this dinner party would not have been possible. The cultural differences would have made for extreme problems. The German ladies, for the previous ten years, would have been forced to conform to a world view of Übermenschen and Untermenschen. They would have fallen into the former culture and my wife and I into the latter class. And my wife and I would have been in a state of fear.

Cultural contempt makes social barriers so high that normal interaction is impossible. For example: a cultural and educational tour company advertises China as a destination in both The Guardian (left) and The Telegraph (centre-right). The tours are the same but the dates are different, because the disparate groups of people are not compatible. One holds the culture of the other in absolute contempt.

I am a racist in that I like my own culture, and I am much more relaxed in a social situation with people of my own culture. This is racism in moderation, and gives offense to nobody who is not looking to be offended.

There is an Arab lady who collects food from our charity here in Sderot. She is certainly the wrong side of fifty. She greets the volunteers in Hebrew and smiles, positively beams friendliness to us all. She is a pleasure to serve, hijab and all. Most of our problems are Russian, those who bring their communist atheist upbringing through the door with them. They find it very difficult to understand the concept of a charity, and that our staff is of unpaid volunteers, many of whom are poorer than the clients they serve. One gentleman client even demanded that we employ a Russian speaker.

Zhoya, a volunteer from Kazakhstan, speaks Russian and is a great help when she is there, but our two Russian volunteers are now elderly and infirm and we very rarely see them. Zhoya is no spring chicken, but she is lovely to work with, and is absolutely reliable. David (from WV) speaks some Russian, as well as Hebrew, English, Dutch and French, and the Moroccan and Tunisian Israelis also speak French. The charity is American, and lunchtime is a cross section of U.S. society: West Virginia, Texas, two from California, Oregon, North Carolina and Kansas, plus my wife and I from (Old) Hampshire. Culturally we are all compatible even if we do have the odd problem with corned beef, bums and fags. But one also hears Russian, French and Hebrew at lunchtime, and it is not the language or the skin colour that is problematic.

The recent spate of black-on-white violence (and the endemic black-on-black violence) is probably the saddest reflection on US society today, and the mirror is positioned at the top pinnacle of political society where there is a ‘White African’ President who is causing cultural mayhem. Obama holds white middle-class culture (from which he himself descends) in contempt, and that contempt trickles down into the whole ‘Democrat’ culture.

So it is open season on white America, on white Sweden, on white France.

British Prime Minister David Cameron lost a parliamentary vote on Syria, which dashed his hopes of joining Barack Obama’s long-planned war against the Syrian regime. Meanwhile, a British-proposed resolution supporting military action against Syria was defeated in the UN Security Council.

In other news, the firebrand “Norwegian” jailbird Mullah Krekar wrote a letter endorsing the Labour Party in the upcoming elections, thereby increasing Prime Minister Stoltenberg’s chances of cornering the criminal terrorist vote.

Next Target: A Jesuit School

The plight of a Jesuit school in the Egyptian city of Minya reminds me the fable about the frog and the scorpion. For those unfamiliar with the story, it runs something like this:

A scorpion persuades a frog to carry him across a river by arguing that if he were to sting the frog, both animals would die.

The frog complies with the request, but halfway across the river the scorpion stings him. Before he drowns, he asks the scorpion, “Why did you sting me? Now we both shall die.”

The scorpion replies: “Because it is my nature.”

The Jesuit school in Minya, unlike a nearby church and orphanage, is still standing. But probably not for long — the supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and deposed President Mohamed Morsi have been demonstrating in front of it, and a violent attack seems all but inevitable.

Yet three-quarters of the school’s students are Muslims, so when it is eventually reduced to a charred ruin, the children of the local Muslim community will be denied an invaluable Jesuit education.

Because it is their nature.

Here’s the report from Asia News:

“We Live in Fear of More Violence, “ Says Indian Jesuit

Head of the local Jesuit school, the priest describes how the Christian community is targeted by Islamists on a daily basis even though three quarters of its pupils are Muslim. Minya residents complain that things are out of control in their governorate as Islamists vent their rage indiscriminately.

Minya (AsiaNews) — “When they march in front of our church during demonstrations organised by the Muslim Brotherhood, protesters are amazed that the building is still there,” Fr Bimal Kerketta told AsiaNews.

Originally from India, the priest has been in Egypt for ten years working as the principal of the school run by the Jesuit Fathers in Minya.

“Each day, they gather in front of the building to shout slogan of intimidation. I fear that tomorrow’s event will lead to fresh acts of violence.”

Minya Governorate, which is located on the Nile south of Cairo, felt the brunt of the Islamist wrath following Mohammed Morsi’s removal from power.

Many local sources describe a city out of control and left to fend for itself.

Malmö says “Nej tack” to the EDL

Dispatch International has invited English Defence League leaders Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll to visit Copenhagen and Malmö next month, providing Danes and Swedes with the opportunity to learn first-hand what the EDL stands for, rather than read the distorted version fed to them by the MSM.

The two Lutonians will appear as scheduled in Copenhagen, but the Malmö gig has been thrown into doubt by the venue, which cancelled the booking when they found out that two right-wing extremist racist xenophobic fascist neo-Nazi Islamophobes were going to be the feature attraction.

DI posted the following notice on Tuesday:

The Swedish Free Press Society and Dispatch International present Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll

Swedish and Danish media portray the grass root English Defence League, EDL, as a bunch of violent football hooligans and despicable racists. But are they? Come and hear what the EDL’s leaders have to say.

Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll will visit Malmö and Copenhagen to tell why they oppose England’s Islamization and how they go about it. After their speeches, the audience will have ample opportunity to ask questions.

We are looking for a new place for the meeting

Malmö September 28, 2013

  • 200 SEK

Copenhagen September 29, 2013

  • Odd Fellow Palæet, 28 Bredgade
  • Time: 15-17

Ingrid Carlqvist followed up yesterday with this editorial:

Editorial: What does the English Defence League want?

by Ingrid Carlqvist

On November 6, 1881, August Palm called a meeting in Malmö, at Hotel Stockholm. Approximately 130 turned up to listen to the 32 year old tailor who wanted to explain what the Social Democrats stood for and how they wanted to change society. The title of his speech was: What do the Social Democrats want?

On September 28, the Swedish Free Press Society and Dispatch International had intended to hold a similar meeting. To be sure Hotel Stockholm is long gone so we booked a hall at Folkets hus (The People’s House) in Malmö. On the podium we intended to present the leaders of the English Defence League, Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll, to give them an opportunity to explain what the EDL stands for and how they want to change society. The theme of the meeting was: Who are the EDL?

But the inhabitants of Malmö are not supposed to know. Hardly had we posted the information, before we got a mail from the Malmö Conference Center (Malmö Konferenscenter):

Major Nidal Hasan, the Killer Shrink of Fort Hood, will apparently get the martyrdom he has so longed for: he has been sentenced to death by a military jury.

In other news, it seems that tomorrow’s scheduled war in Syria may have to be delayed. Amid increasingly numerous MSM reports that the chemical attack was actually organized as a “false flag” operation by the rebels, British Prime Minister David Cameron has climbed down from his plans for Syria. Facing opposition from both Labour and some of his fellow Tories, he has postponed a parliamentary vote.

Churches, Schools, and now… Orphanages

For the last few weeks we’ve been hearing about the burning of Coptic churches and schools in Egypt. Now orphanages have been added to the list of preferred targets.

I can understand Islamic rage at computers and other high-tech gadgets — they are, after all, tools of the infidel. They didn’t exist when the prophet was alive, and therefore lack any sanction in the Koran or the hadith.

But toys? Why toys? Aisha played with dolls, so what’s the issue? Maybe the kids’ toy boxes contained wooden pigs on wheels…

From Asia News:

Minya: Schools, Churches and Orphanages Burnt to Erase All Traces of a Christian Presence

In a raid that followed Morsi’s ouster, Islamists particularly raged against children’s toys. The facilities were also open to children from rural Muslim families.

Minya (AsiaNews) – With at least 20 attacks against churches, Christian schools and orphanages, Minya Governorate is the part of Egypt where Islamists struck with greatest violence and brutality.

“The Islamists”, one resident said, “burnt and destroyed everything. Their goal was to erase all the traces of a Christian presence; even the orphanages were looted and destroyed.”

After storming the Prince Tadros el-Shatbi Church, the armed Islamic extremists turned their attention to two homes for disadvantaged children located near the parish church, residents said.

They stole church offerings, clothes, and children’s games before torching the entire building. The fire lasted over 5 hours.

“Fortunately,” the source said, “the children were taken to safety before the arrival of the Islamists.”

Like other Christians sites, the two homes that housed hundreds of orphans are now a pile of rubble.

The criminals did not only destroy the two orphanages but also the homes of some families working for the orphanages as well as a nearby art gallery that sold objects and artefacts made by orphans to raise money.

Shurkri Huzayn, 40, is the orphanage guard. He, too, grew up as an orphan at the facility. He witnessed the Salafist attack.

“What kind of people are they? Even unbelievers would not attack an orphanage,” he said.

Islamists raged particularly against anything that symbolised the Christianity and modernity, including computers.

After they left the building, the terrorists burnt nearby shops and schools, such as the St Joseph Coptic School, which is run by nuns, a pharmacy and a restaurant. Anti-Christian graffiti were sprayed on the walls along a road.

Stoning Is Good For You!

A “Canadian” sheikh named Faisal Hamid Abdur-Razak is making waves in Ontario with his recent statements about the stoning of adulterers. Not only does the sheikh prescribe the application of the Shariah punishment for adultery — stoning, that is — he also believes that being stoned is good for the victim’s soul.

In the best of all possible Islamic worlds, all believers stand united in the joy of their faith. The stone-throwers and the bleeding sinner alike are ecstatic in their perfect awareness of Allah’s omnipresent mercy.

That’s some sheikh, that Sheikh Faisal Hamid Abdur-Razak.

As Vlad points out, the illustrious cleric is a distinguished community leader, and consorts regularly with high-minded people of all religious faiths:

Shaykh Faisal served on the Government of Canada Interfaith Committee, the Province of Ontario Multifaith Council, and the City of Brampton Multifaith Committee.

He is also the President of the Islamic Forum of Canada, Vice-President of the Islamic Council of Imams of Canada, and a member of the al-Shura Muslim Consultative Council.

Yes, Sheikh Abdur-Razak is one of those most elusive of creatures, a “moderate Muslim”. Can this really be what a moderate Muslim believes?

I’m shocked — shocked, I tell you!

The Spitting Professor: A Polish Afterword

A month ago there was an uproar in Sweden over a confrontation on Twitter between a Erik Svensson, a professor of biology at the University of Lund, and Ingrid Carlqvist, editor-in-chief of Dispatch International.

The esteemed professor was upset by Ms. Carlqvist’s political opinions, and became intemperate in his remarks towards her, telling her that he would like to spit in her face. This was too much, even for Swedish socialists, and for a while it seemed Prof. Svensson might have to resign his position, especially when he was summoned for little talking-to by his dean. However, although he was reprimanded, he managed to hold on to his job.

The incident prompted PJ, a reader in Poland, to write to the Spitting Professor. He has forwarded us their exchange of emails:

I read the first post on Erik Svensson at GoV and I wrote him immediately in my typical (and deliberate) emotional way:

Mr Svensson, you are absolutely, totally disgusting, maybe you consider yourself a humanist, but you are just an idiot.

What you say about Islam only reveals you vast ignorance.

This is the most totalitarian system in history of mankind, and you defend it. It is like defending nazism.

People like Ingrid Carlqvist are heroes, people like you are dwarfs.
Sweden is drowning and the reason is “intellectuals” like you.

Shame on you — and of course I spit in your face.

Dear PJ,

Who on Earth are you – and why should I for a single consider any of the complete nonsense you are writing to my work e-mail?

I have never heard of you and I am completely uninterested in discussing anything with you — a foreign citizen who does not even live in my country and whom I have nothing in common.

I find it remarkable that you even contacted me at all.
