The renowned Swiss philosopher Tariq Ramadan is now helping French police with their enquiries. Mr. Ramadan has been detained by les flics because of accusations of sexual assault by several women. He says that the charges are falsehoods instigated by his enemies.

In other news, three people in Vietnam have been sentenced to jail terms for posting videos on the internet that criticized the government.

Light Posting

A family member was badly injured in a car accident this morning. As a result, we will be visiting the hospital and engaged in related activities for at least the next few days. In the interim, posting may be light.

I’ll do my best to keep up with the news feed, and we will moderate comments fairly regularly. But the volume of additional material may well be reduced.

Unfortunately, the Great Jihad won’t declare a truce while we’re indisposed. We recommend that you visit Vlad Tepes and Jihad Watch to keep up with what’s going on.

Logic and Politics

Suppose S has a link to Jihad Watch on his blogroll because S is anti-Jihadist. T, who is always on the alert for Islamophobia, calls S “anti-Muslim.” What must T think about Muslims in order for this to follow? There are five possible relationships between Muslims and Jihadists:

1.   No Muslims are Jihadists. (In other words, the classes are disjoint.)
2.   All and only Muslims are Jihadists. (In other words, the classes are identical.)
3.   All Muslims are Jihadists, but not all Jihadists are Muslims. (In other words, the class of Muslims is a proper subset of the class of Jihadists.)
4.   All Jihadists are Muslims, but not all Muslims are Jihadists. (In other words, the class of Jihadists is a proper subset of the class of Muslims.)
5.   Some and only some Muslims are Jihadists. (In other words, the classes overlap, but only in part.)
 

In order for “S is anti-Muslim” to follow from “S is anti-Jihadist,” either 2 or 3 must be true. But notice that in both of them, all Muslims are Jihadists. So T, unwittingly, is saying that all Muslims are Jihadists! It would be funny if it weren’t so sad. It’s even sadder if T is a college student.

“ISIS Followers in Hamburg Wanted to Behead Me”

The man in the video below seems in his own way to be a German version of Aldo Sterone, the auto-pundit. He’s an ex-Muslim convert to Christianity who describes, among other things, a visit to Hamburg, where Muslims wanted to behead him in a restaurant.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited Austria to coordinate with the new Austrian government on migration and protecting the borders of both countries. Mr. Orbán met with both Chancellor Sebastian “Boy” Kurz and Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache.

Francken warns of “battle on highway car parks” after 40 migrants attack police

The federal police had to fire a shot on Friday morning to repel an attack by some forty armed migrants. During a check on the parking lot of Groot-Bijgaarden, along the E40, they attacked the police with sticks. “We’re seeing the aggression increase,” say the police. State Secretary Theo Francken (N-VA) even warns of a “battle for highway car parks.”

The parking lot of Groot-Bijgaarden, along the E40, has a bad reputation for migrants who try to crawl in trucks to get into Great Britain. In addition, violence is increasingly used against truckers. The police therefore regularly conduct checks.

That was also the case on Thursday night around 2 o’clock. “A team from the federal highway police, consisting of six agents, watched the neighborhood and caught in the act five traveling migrants who wanted to climb into trucks. The aliens fled into the bushes and returned shortly thereafter with reinforcement. They executed an actual charge, armed with sticks and rods. Yelling and ranting, they surrounded our people who defended themselves with their truncheons. There were blows. To get the situation under control, a shot was fired in the air,” says police spokesman Peter De Waele of the federal police.

“Agents, however, are not frivolous with their weapons and only use them in very exceptional cases,” stresses De Waele.

Two weeks ago the federal road police on the E34 in Lille, in the Kempen, also intercepted a van with thirty migrants on board. In that case they were from Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. When the police opened the doors, there was uproar, and the crowd turned against the two agents. Even then, a warning shot — a shot in the air — had to be fired, confirms De Waele.

And also at the highway parking lot of Rotselaar on Thursday night a trucker was attacked by traveling migrants. The driver reached safety by locking himself in his truck.

“Last night’s incident in Groot-Bijgaarden is more than worrying. They used to run from the police; now they are attacking,” say the police. “It is clear that those people are very frustrated when their crossing to Great Britain fails or threatens to fail, especially if they have paid large sums of money to human smugglers.”

Nobody stopped

Of the sixteen people who were arrested after the attack on the agents, no one was made available to the public prosecutor. “The sixteen detainees have all been transferred to the Immigration Office,” reports the prosecution office of Halle-Vilvoorde. “The people who had fled were not among those who were arrested,” says the prosecution spokeswoman Carol Vercarre.

The Serendipity of a Newspaper Typo

Yesterday I read an article in The Express that referred to someone as a “Euro-septic” (I think they were talking about Matteo Salvini of the Lega Nord). It seemed to me that the unfortunate typo just cried out to be memed, so I made this pic:

That’s Nigel Farage on the left and Jean-Claude Juncker on the right. Since Mr. Farage is British, I used the Brit spelling of “skeptic”.

Halal, Vegan — Same Thing

In order to target the Muslim market, a German company is marketing a snack food as halal, but without using the word.

Egri Nök, who translated the brief commercial below, includes this explanatory note:

It’s a brilliant trick — “veggie” is a code word, so that they don’t have to say “halal”. German customers hate the word “halal”. We still love our pork too much. But when you call the product “veggie” you can sell it to both Turks and Germans.

I might add that after conferring with Egri, we decided to use “vegan” instead of “veggie” (which was borrowed from English) because in German the latter carries an all-pervading odor of sanctimony, which it doesn’t have in English — so “vegan” is a better fit.

Vehicular Jihad in Philadelphia

There were several items about this story in last night’s news feed, but I didn’t want to post any commentary on it until the name of the now-deceased perpetrator was released.

I saw the first breaking news report on the incident yesterday morning, less than two hours after it happened: at about 7:30am in South Philadelphia a man driving a Black Honda deliberately ran down a pedestrian, flipping him up over the hood onto the windshield. The driver was attempting to run down others when he was stopped by a “good Samaritan” driving another vehicle. An off-duty cop heard the alert and arrived on the scene quickly. When the driver came to attack him, the officer warned him, and then had to shoot him multiple times, wounding him severely. The perpetrator died shortly afterwards; the victim he ran down was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The news reports made me suspicious. I don’t know much about the ethnography of Philadelphia except that it is less culturally enriched than New York or D.C., and largely African-American. In big cities there are sometimes late-night incidents outside nightclubs, where one angry and medicated person drives up on the sidewalk and runs down his enemies. But at 7:30am? Most of the nightclub crowd would have passed out by then…

For a good part of the day all the headlines referred to an “erratic driver”. But then the PennLive website put out a piece with the phrase “rampaging driver” in the headline. It included the detail that the black Honda had Maryland plates. There are lots of culture-enrichers in the D.C. suburbs on both sides of the river.

Hmm…

Still later in the day, the Philly police said they hadn’t ruled out “terrorism” as a motive.

Hmm…

Now all we needed was a name. It took a long time for the authorities to release the name, which is often the case when jihad is involved. Late this afternoon the driver was finally identified in this AP story:

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/29/2018

A man from Maryland deliberately drove into a pedestrian in South Philadelphia, and was said to be trying to attack more when he was stopped by a good Samaritan in another vehicle. An off-duty cop rushed to confront the driver, who grappled with him, and was then shot to death by the cop. The wounded victim is in the hospital. Police have not ruled out terrorism as a motive.

In other news, Spanish vessels under the supervision of Frontex rescued more than 300 migrants off the coast of Libya and brought them safely to Italy. Meanwhile, more than 200 migrants landed on the Greek island of Lesvos in the space of 24 hours.

The Movement of Europe of Nations and Freedom (MENF) will organize a conference “The Political Situation in South Africa: Some Humans’ Rights matter more than others’ for the EU.”

The conference will be hosted by UK MEP Janice Atkinson: “South Africa stands on a precipice. In 2019 they will hold national elections which could see the ANC fracture and the violent Marxists of the Economic Freedom Fighters holding the balance of power. If this happens, South Africa is finished.”

Murders and rapes across the country are at an unprecedented level. Fifty-two people are murdered every day. Each year hundreds of farmers are brutally attacked and many murdered: in the first nine months of 2017 alone 68 people were murdered, with 357 attacks.

MEP Janice Atkinson: “If this isn’t a human rights crisis, then I don’t know what it is. South Africa is a country I love. On returning from a trip there in November 2017, and during Black Monday I requested a debate in the European Parliament. Of course, they declined, as this is a parliament that favours some pet humans’ rights over others. Yet the political situation in South Africa needs to be addressed urgently and that’s why I’ve decided to organize this conference together with my colleagues.”

Guest speaker is Dr Corné Mulder — chairperson of the Freedom Front Plus Constitutional Committee in South Africa. Apart from Janice Atkinson, Vice-President of ENF, other speakers are Nicolas Bay, MEP for Front National and ENF Co-President; and Gerolf Annemans, MEP for Vlaams Belang and President of the MENF.

In the regional parliament of Saxony-Anhalt last Friday, the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland, Alternative for Germany) argued emotionally for an end to Angela Merkel’s fatal immigration policy, which has seen more than three million Muslims enter the country since 2013.

The boos should be heard clearly: The Tagesschau admits a tone change in a report about Donald Trump. Critics speak of an impermissible manipulation.

The ARD openly admits the change: at the end of a post about Donald Trump, which the Tagesschau published on Twitter, the sound level was turned up higher. The reason: Boos against the US president should be strengthened.

Trump spoke last Thursday at a press conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos about a “nasty, mean, vicious, fake press”, and for that he was booed by people who were present in the hall. But the boos weren’t loud enough for the newscast.

But critics accuse the ARD flagship of improper manipulation. “You know what? You confirm exactly what Trump accuses you all of,” a user commented on Tagesschau‘s procedure.
