Flipping Pancakes

Today is Shrove Tuesday, the day when we Episcopalians traditionally hold a pancake supper. It’s our final big blast before the austerity of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

It’s my first stint as lead cook in today’s supper at my church, so I will be away most of the afternoon and part of the evening. Posting will be light as a result.

Have Condoms, Will Travel

This is a strange video; I don’t know quite what to make of it. It’s from South Africa, and is in Afrikaans. A man (presumably a farmer) confronts an intruder who penetrated the barrier to his property carrying a knife, a sjambok, and condoms.

Stockholm District Court Takes a Whiz on Justice

The young “svenne” who was robbed, beaten, and urinated upon by two even younger culture-enrichers has seen justice done, Swedish-style: last week the mischievous youngsters received a draconian sentence of “youth care”.

Many thanks to FouseSquawk for translating this article from Nyheter Idag:

Those who humiliated robbery victim by pissing on him sentenced to juvenile care

Stockholm: Today the verdict was handed down on the two 16-year-olds who, in an attention-getting robbery, concluded by urinating on the 18-year-old victim and forcing him to undress the lower part of his body while the attack was filmed to be spread on the Internet.

After Nyheter Idag drew attention to the humiliation robbery of the 18-year-old youth, who for hours was led around some of Stockholm’s southern suburbs while being subjected to violence and threats, the question of humiliation and hate against Swedes is being debated in various ways. Today the sentence was handed down against the two 16-year-olds who were charged with the incident.

The district court wrote of the incident that “these crimes included a very serious violation of (the victim’s) personal integrity and caused severe mental distress for him. He was subjected to the crimes for almost three hours with constant threats against him and his family. He was humiliated by being urinated upon and forced to take off his pants and underwear”.

One 16-year-old explained this behavior that they were irritated that the 18-year-old couldn’t get money for them. Otherwise they have not been able to explain their behavior with anything except that it was “a bad idea”.

For the crime, one 16-year-old has been convicted in court of robbery and abuse, while the other — who spread the video recording — is also convicted of illegal breach of privacy. Both have been sentenced to youth care and together they will pay damages of just under 65,000 kronor ($6,500)to the plaintiff.

One of the perpetrators was also sentenced for two further robberies, one charge of unlawful detention, and another charge of abuse in a court case, which according to the district court calls for four years in prison for an adult who is not covered by youth reduction. Instead, there will be six months of youth care in an HVB home. The prosecutor demanded that he be sentenced to closed youth care, but he did not get a hearing for this in court. The other perpetrator was, at the time of the crime, already in the care of social services.

The case involved several different crimes, and besides the two mentioned perpetrators, another four 16-year-olds were sentenced for, among other charges, robberies.

Testimony of Eyewitnesses to the Massacre in Hanau

Last night I reported on the possibility that there is more than meets the eye to last week’s massacre in the German city of Hanau, in which a “racist” named Tobias Rathjen supposedly went on a shooting rampage and killed eight people before allegedly killing his mother and himself.

The field of potential suspects for the murders in Hanau has expanded considerably. The following video contains audio clips from WhatsApp recorded by people who claim to have seen the attacks. Some of the reports were apparently recorded while the killing was still going on. Multiple perpetrators were reported, and some witnesses described them as Russians.

Many thanks to MissPiggy for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

A Host of Kind Faces

This post was a “sticky” feature for a week, and was first published last Monday. Scroll down for items posted since that time.

Winter Fundraiser 2020, Day Seven

Sunday’s Update: Snaps From the Family Album

This morning’s update will be brief, and will include just two final photos of kind faces from my memory. The first one is the above snapshot of Dymphna from 1987. I’ll tell you more about that in a minute, after I get the formalities out of the way.

Tip jarWe’re down to the wire here in the Winter Fundraiser of 2020: this is the final day. If you haven’t put a jingle into the tip cup (or this link), now is the time to do it.

Just think: this is a way to avoid all those noisome and obnoxious ads that you see on most sites. This blog relies entirely on modest donations by individual readers. I have no commercial sponsors. I’m not supported by any foundations or think tanks. The only sponsors are the people who read this site.

So if you appreciate what you find here, please drop a groat in the cup. A reminder: I send 10% of what I fundraise here to Vlad Tepes, whose video work is absolutely crucial to what I do. If you think he deserves more, please visit his site and click his own donate button.

The photo of Dymphna at the top of this update is one of my all-time favorites. It captures her essence: that is exactly Dymphna, my beloved wife, with whom I spent forty fortunate years.

The picture was taken at my annual art show in the fall of 1987. The venue was a restaurant on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. I’ve racked my brains trying to figure out who Dymphna was talking to when I took the snap, but I can’t do it. However, I can identify all three paintings on the wall in the background, despite the blurriness. Funny about that.

The final set of kind faces for this fundraiser is a detail from a larger group photo that was taken in the mid-1980s when the future Baron was just a few months old. As far as I know, the fB and I are the only two people in the photo who are still alive, but just in case I’ve cropped the rest of them out:

That’s Dymphna at the top, and her mother seated in front of her. Boy, I sure had more hair in those days. And none of it was white yet.

These last two snaps from the Bodissey family album wrap up the 2020 Winter Fundraiser. I realize that I’ve been wallowing in nostalgia this past week, but then, wallowing is an emotional necessity for me in these our wintry days.

Saturday’s donors hailed from:

Stateside: Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Mexico, West Virginia, and Washington

Far Abroad: Lithuania and the UK

Canada: Ontario

Australia: Western Australia

This concludes the 2020 Winter Fundraiser for Gates of Vienna. I’ll post a wrap-up with all the locations sometime in the next few days.

A hearty Bodisseyan “thank you” to all those people on four continents who chipped in. It looks like I’ll be set for another quarter.

Saturday’s Update: Miscellaneous Faces From History, Not All of Them Kind

I’ll switch gears this morning and post a series of faces from history, chosen by whim from my image library. The one above shows Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (a.k.a. Joseph Stalin), Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Sir Winston Churchill at the Tehran Conference in late 1943. Sir Winston’s face might be characterized as “kind”, but FDR’s and Uncle Joe’s not so much.

I have more faces to post, but first a word about what I’ve been doing during this week that is rapidly drawing to a close.

For one week every quarter I beg for money from readers to help keep Gates of Vienna going. The tradition began while Dymphna was alive, and continues in her absence. We depended, and I still depend, on the kindness of strangers. Actually, not all of you are strangers, come to think of it…

So if you haven’t done so already, please click that funky tip cup on the sidebar (or use this link) and drop in a ha’penny or two to help keep this enterprise afloat.

What’s amazing to me is the large number of modest donations that have come in. They’re generally quite small, but there are so MANY of them — they really add up. I’m humbled by your generosity, and pleased to see so many first-time donors.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/23/2020

The number of Wuhan Coronavirus infections in South Korea has risen to 762, with a death toll of seven. Meanwhile, more than 150 people were confirmed to have the disease in Italy, where three people have died of it. Also, tourism in France is estimated to be down by about a third since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

In other French news, a Muslim man in France is on trial for beating his wife and daughters because they refused to wear hijab.

Who Really Committed the Massacre in Hanau?

As I reported on Thursday, a mentally disturbed man named Tobias Rathjen was alleged to have gone on a shooting rampage at two hookah bars in the German city of Hanau, killing eight people before shooting both himself and his mother to death.

Mr. Rathjen had posted (or liked, not sure which) some “racist” materials online, so that made him a right-wing extremist, and therefore an admirer of the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland, Alternative for Germany). Establishment politicians and the media immediately glommed onto the incident as an opportunity to denounce the AfD and call for it to be investigated and restricted, if not banned outright.

In first part of the following video, you’ll hear what officials had to say at a press conference about the mentally ill perpetrator of the attacks. In the second part Beatrix von Storch, Deputy Leader of the AfD and a member of the Bundestag, answers hostile questions from the media, who want to pin the blame for the massacre on the AfD.

Many thanks to MissPiggy for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

In the second video things get really interesting. According to some social media groups in Hanau, the perpetrator of the massacre was NOT Tobias Rathjen. There are reportedly Turkish witnesses (writing in Turkish, naturally) who saw multiple killers, and none of them was the late Mr. Rathjen.

The following video features an audio account by an unidentified woman. MissPiggy says she has an accent, possibly Arabic. The speaker in the audio asserts that Tobias Rathjen was a money-launderer for the “Arabic Mafia”. He ran afoul of his employers for some unspecified reason, and as a result he and his mother were killed by them.

In other words, the massacre was an instance of enricher-on-enricher violence, with two additional victims who were native Germans.

Once again, many thanks to MissPiggy for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Viktor Orbán: “This is a Well-Organized Invasion”

Röszke is a town in southern Hungary, at the border crossing with Serbia. As reported here previously, during the Great Migration Crisis of 2015 a huge mob of migrants attacked the border crossing there (“The Battle of Röszke”). Then last month another organized mob rushed the border at Röszke.

The following video is an excerpt from a press conference on February 13 at which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Slovakian Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini spoke.

Notes from the translator:

This press conference took place at the border in Röszke, with official translators translating immediately. As a result, Mr. Orbán speaks in short sentences to help the translator.

The first part of the video is standard diplomatic chit-chat. First Mr. Orbán thanks the Slovakian PM for sending Slovakian police officers to defend the Hungarian border. Then PM Pellegrini thanks the Hungarians for defending the southern border of the EU, thereby defending Slovakia.

Many thanks to CrossWare for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

The Albertslund Station is a No-Go Zone

The following translations by Tania Groth are from Danish Facebook and media sites. I don’t have any URLs for the original texts:

Source: Marcus Alexander Aroli on Facebook, February 15, 2020

As a father of teenage boys, I am often worried, and 17-year-old Marcus from Albertslund looks exactly like my eldest. It is bad in some places in the province, but is obviously a bit worse in the Islamized suburbs of Copenhagen. For example, in Albertslund, an average Friday night. A story from the real world.

I was beaten to the ground yesterday at Albertslund station. There was a larger group present, but there were about nine people out of this group who were involved. However, only three of them managed to physically grab me and started beating me. As I was trying to escape, there was a fourth who tripped me, so I fell to the ground.

They also tried several times to push me down onto the rails. The last attempt was when the train was arriving at the platform.

My sister and I were at Taastrup station yesterday and decided to take the train one stop to Albertslund station to buy some soda in the 7-11 as there isn’t one in Taastrup. As soon as I get off the train, my sister and one of her girlfriends say they think they know them (or had at least had heard something about them before); they were standing at the end of the entrance to the platform.

I then ask what they mean, and before I know it a boy about 15 years old with black curly hair provocatively stands very close to me and for no reason, and before I have a chance to say anything I get a fist right in the face so that my upper lip splits open.

I know I have no way to protect myself or my little sister as there are so many, so I tell my sister that we have to go right away. So I move on quietly and then eventually start running as two to three of them are now chasing me, and I get hit again, this time on the right side of my jaw.

I then continue running until I reach the end of the platform, where there are only rails. From there, I know I have to go back to get past them, so of course they hit me again and my sister starts crying. I eventually fall, and can see he was close to stomping on my head, so out of panic I take a bag of four beers which I had, and smash it onto the head of one of them in order to defend myself.

I get up quickly and run towards the exit from the platform, where I get tripped by some other immigrants standing indoors just outside the 7-11. I then run back towards the platform and out onto the rails. (And it should be said that they fortunately did not touch my sister or her girlfriends) they had their full focus on me.
