Gates of Vienna News Feed 12/18/2014

A Texas plumber has been deluged with phone calls and threats since one of his pickup trucks ended up being used by mujahideen in Syria, and appeared in a jihad video. Three years ago he sold the truck to a dealer, who failed to take his decal off the door, so that it was easily readable in the jihad video. The plumber says he has no idea how the truck ended up in Syria.

In other news, an overnight explosion shook Rinkeby, a suburb of Stockholm, and did substantial damage to a local shopping center.

A PEGIDA Christmas

The PEGIDA movement in Germany is spreading to other cities — with the help of the anti-euro party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland, Alternative for Germany), according to this article from Zuerst. Many thanks to JLH for the translation:

Düsseldorf, Kassel, Leipzig: PEGIDA Offshoots Aided by AfD Politicians

December 17, 2014

Düsseldorf/Kassel/Leipzig: Spin-offs of Dresden’s PEGIDA in Düsseldorf, Kassel and Leipzig are being supported and to some extent organized by representatives of AfD.

So reports DIE ZEIT. The Leipzig spin-off of PEGIDA (LEGIDA) announced its first demonstration for January 12, 2015. At least two members of the hitherto anonymous organizational team are to be AfD, including Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, chair of the “Patriotic Platform” — a coalition of AfD members. The Islam scholar at the University of Bayreuth said he had been asked by the LEGIDA organizers to help create the offshoot demonstration in Leipzig.

AfD members are also helping to organize demonstrations by the PEGIDA movement elsewhere. One of the Düsseldorf organizers (DÜGIDA), Alexander Heumann, is an AfD member. In Kassel too (KAGIDA), the protest with Michael Viehmann was organized and registered by an AfD member. The spokesman of the local, Kassel city AfD chapter, Manfred Mattis, appeared as the speaker.

Galileo in the Dock (Again)

It’s déjà vu all over again — Geert Wilders, the leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Netherlands, will go on trial early next year for “hate speech”. For the third time, no less.

Our Dutch correspondent H. Numan has sent us some invaluable background material on the situation in the Netherlands, including the “Christmas Crisis” — the reason for the timing of the prosecution against Mr. Wilders — among other things.

Here’s what he has to report:

Those of you who followed the earlier trials of Mr. Wilders will remember the brilliant and successful defense mounted (twice!) by Mr. Bram Moszkowicz, the counsel for the defense. This time Mr. Wilders will not have the superb Mr. Moszkowicz as defense lawyer.

After his complete and total victory in the last trial, and the utter humiliation of the court (by themselves, they didn’t need any support) Mr. Moszkowicz is being taken to the cleaners. He has been disbarred, and cannot work as a lawyer anymore. And now the court is going to bankrupt him as well.

The official reasons are of course perfectly in order and fully legal. But the message is: don’t tread on me! The court hates losing a case, but this was not just losing a case. It was a freak show from a circus. Both the court and the prosecution acted as circus clowns. And that is something no court will accept. Hence their revenge.

What most people (and not just Stateside) don’t realize is the coincidence of this trial.

Two days ago a piece of very important legislature got shot down by the Senate.

The government wants to give insurance companies (all four of them) the power to decide which doctor or which hospital you visit. We only have four insurance companies, so effectively this is an insurance cartel. Plenty of different brand names, but only four providers who do not compete against each other too much — by my lights, that’s a cartel.

Insurance companies like to work with only a few hospitals, so they can negotiate a better deal. That’s why they contract with certain doctors and hospitals. This issue is the sharp end of the wedge: does it matter? Yes, it most certainly does. First of all, the client has to pay the full price if he decides to use a different doctor or hospital. Not the extra cost involved, but all of it.

What’s next? Well, that is fairly obvious. Once this piece of legislation is kicked through both houses, they can do whatever they want. For example: an insurance company may want to contract with just one hospital. The cheapest in the country, of course. If you don’t want to travel across the country, for a fee you can be treated in your hometown. That hospital will no doubt have gigantic waiting lists. For a fee the insurance company can move you up the list.

I went into these details about this piece of legislature, as it is very important for what happens next to Geert Wilders.

The Mystery Flag Revealed!

In the comments on our recent post about PEGIDA (Patriotische Europäer Gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes, Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West), Mark Spahn asked about the flags being thrown in the trash by the stylized figure in PEGIDA’s logo.

The top and bottom ones were obvious — the Islamic State and the Nazi swastika, respectively — but Mr. Spahn was having trouble identifying the other two. The second from the top is the logo of the “anti-fascist” anarchists, but the third was not at all clear. It was evidently some sort of Communist icon, with the gold star and the red background. But what exactly was it?

After some diligent Internet sleuthing, I discovered a high-resolution PEGIDA image that solved the mystery. The identity of the third flag may surprise you:

The Political Risks

Based on the latest online poll from De Telegraaf, prosecuting Geert Wilders for his “discrimination” against Moroccans will not be without its political risks.

79% of respondents answered “no” to the question “Do you agree with the prosecution of Geert Wilders for his statement about ‘fewer Moroccans’?”, while 76% answered yes to the question “Wilders claims that he says what ‘millions of Dutchmen’ think. Does he also speak on your behalf?”

Geert Wilders to be Prosecuted

The public prosecutor’s office (Openbaar Ministerie, OM) has decided to bring a case against Geert Wilders, the leader of the Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV) in the Netherlands.

The PVV released the following statement this morning in reaction to the OM’s decision:

Wilders: Decision to prosecute me is incomprehensible

Wilders: “I have said what millions of people think and find. For the second time, one apparently wants to deal with someone who speaks the truth. It is a travesty that I have to defend myself in court for this. The Public Prosecutor would do better to devote his time to prosecuting jihadis instead of me. The Party for Freedom is the largest party in the polls. Apparently the elite does not like that.”

According to an article this morning in Fox News:

Firebrand Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders to be prosecuted for ‘fewer Moroccans’ chant

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Dutch authorities say they will prosecute lawmaker Geert Wilders for hate speech over a chant in which he asked his supporters whether they wanted more or fewer Moroccans in the Netherlands and they shouted back “Fewer! Fewer! Fewer!”

The announcement Thursday marks the second time Wilders has faced charges linked to his anti-immigrant and anti-Islam rhetoric. He was acquitted of similar charges in 2011 for comparing Islam with Nazism and calling for a ban on the Quran.

In a written statement, Wilders says he “said what millions of people think and believe.”

Prosecutors say they received more than 6,400 complaints about Wilders after his comments in March this year.

Wilders says authorities “should concentrate on prosecuting jihadis instead of me.”

The Weaponized Rhetoric of Jihad

A non-Muslim who studies Islamic law in any depth soon learns that certain words have different meanings in Islam than they do in ordinary usage. Terms used in Islamic law that have specialized definitions include justice, peace, freedom, innocent, human rights, terrorism, slander, and any number of other seemingly commonplace English words and phrases.

Spokesmen for Islamic organization — and particularly those for Muslim Brotherhood front groups — rely on our ignorance about these “terms of art”. One reason that they are winning their information war with the West is that we simply do not understand what they really mean when they use these deliberately misleading words.

The following video draws on the expertise of Major (ret.) Stephen Coughlin, Dr. Bill Warner, Robert Spencer, and Clare Lopez to explain the special meanings prescribed by sharia for various crucial terms.

Many thanks to the Victor Laszlo Media Group for producing this video:

Note: Maj. Coughlin misspoke at 17:30 when he mentioned the publication date of Islam and Universal Peace by Sayyid Qutb. It was actually published in 1951.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 12/17/2014

The threat by hactivists to commit acts of terror at movie theaters has caused Sony to cancel the upcoming release of its comedy The Interview, which mocks North Korea. The U.S. government has determined that North Korea was behind the hack attack that has disabled the entertainment giant.

In other news, the second-highest court in the European Union has ordered that Hamas be removed from the EU’s list of terrorist groups. Meanwhile, the European Parliament is poised to vote “yes” on a resolution calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Eye Level

I had an appointment with the retinal specialist this afternoon for my two-month checkup. After being forced to read those horrible sets of progressively smaller letters, and then having my eyes dilated, both eyes were scanned to check the condition of my retinas (retinae?).

I’m happy to report that they both passed with flying colors, as it were. The doctor says the left eye seems to be stabilized, with no sign of further deterioration, despite its not having had an injection for several months. Its condition is so favorable that I can go three months before my next checkup.

The new scanning equipment they use is amazing. Not only is it faster and less irritating to the eyes than the earlier machines (which were amazing enough), but the digital data dumps directly into the office computer network as soon as the scan is complete. The system stores the entire history of scans, and then animates them frame-by-frame in any relevant cross-section the doctor asks for. That way he (and I) can clearly see the changes over time in the damaged part of my left eye. In this case, the successive images look all but identical, which is why the doctor has given the thumbs-up to a three-month gap before my next visit.

When I got home, my eyes were still too dilated to deal with this screen for more than a couple of minutes, and I didn’t get back up to speed until just now. There are some more posts in the pipeline, but they may be delayed until tomorrow.

Here’s looking at you, kid!

Peace Has Nothing To Do With Islam

Standing outside Salisbury Cathedral, home to the Magna Carta, Paul Weston has a few choice words to say to Prime Minister David Cameron about the “Religion of Peace”:

Paul Weston is a British-based writer who focuses on the damage done to Western Civilisation by the hard left’s ongoing cultural revolution, which seeks to destroy the Christian, capitalist and racial base of the West. He is the leader of Liberty GB, his website may be found here, and his political Facebook page here. For links to his previous essays, see the Paul Weston Archives.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 12/16/2014

Yesterday the Russian central bank increased its key interest rate in an attempt to stop the slide of the ruble, but its effect was short-lived. The ruble resumed its plunge against other currencies today, as the price of oil continued to drop. The decline of the ruble is having ripple effects beyond Russia, pulling down stock market prices in other emerging economies and causing serious damage to investment funds, even in some Western countries.

In other news, a bomb exploded on a road in Yemen, killing twenty-five people, at least fifteen of them children on a school bus.

Sweden Democrats Polling at 16%

Back in September Sweden held a general election, after which the Social Democrats assumed the leadership of a minority governing coalition under Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. After the government’s budget failed to gain approval in a parliamentary vote on December 3, Mr. Löfven announced that new elections would be held in March 2015.

The Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna, SD) are the only immigration-critical party represented in the Swedish parliament. They received almost 13% of the vote in September, and hold 49 of 349 parliamentary seats. The other seven major parties (sjuklövern, “the 7-clovers”, the seven-party system) have formed a cordon sanitaire around SD, vowing never to enter into any coalition or electoral alliance with the “racists”.

All of that may change come next March, however. According to the latest polls, the Sweden Democrats are now preferred by 16% of the voters. They constitute the third-largest party, and are gaining fast on the Moderates in second place. By the time the elections roll around, SD may hold too strong a position for the other parties to successfully ignore.

PEGIDA Takes Wing in Dresden

For the last couple of months the German Counterjihad has been staging the largest and most effective public demonstrations in Europe. The heart of the resistance is in what used to be East Germany, where people can still remember what it is like to live under a mendacious totalitarian regime, and are not at all willing to suffer a new one without protest. Last night’s march by PEGIDA (Patriotische Europäer Gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes, Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West) in Dresden drew a reported 15,000 participants.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has obviously been unnerved by these impertinent upstarts who refuse to accept her official Politically Correct Multicultural narrative. The situation has become so alarming that, before last night’s PEGIDA march took place, a sitting chancellor of the German Federal Republic took the unprecedented step of saying the following things about peaceful protesters who rallied in an orderly fashion to object to her government’s policies:

Chancellor Angela Merkel warned people against playing into the hands of xenophobes hours before an ‘anti-Islamization’ march in Dresden on Monday evening.

[…]

“Of course there’s freedom to demonstrate in Germany,” Merkel said in Berlin on Monday. “But it’s no place for agitation and mud-slinging against people who come to us from other countries.

“That’s why everyone should watch out that they aren’t being instrumentalized by the initiators of an event like this.”

The PEGIDA demonstrators have been dubbed “Nazis in pinstripes” by mainstream politicians and the press. It’s an egregious and false canard directed at ordinary people who have simply decided that they’ve had enough, and they aren’t going to take any more.

JLH has translated four articles from various German-language sources about PEGIDA and related “uprisings”. He includes this introduction:

Clipping the Flying Horse’s Wings

Already, during the early days of PEGIDA, some atavistic linguistic quirk made me equate the acronym with Pegasus, the fabulous, flying horse. The name took on a truly magical quality for me when I was reminded that this is twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which was impelled in no small measure by regular demonstrations in the “heart of darkness” — East Germany. Demonstrations that were slandered and mocked by the authorities, who had once bloodily suppressed the “workers’ revolt” but had by this time grown lazy and fearful, and could not stem the popular tide led by those who would no longer be denied.

And, as Michael Mannheimer reminded us, here they are again. The outraged citizens in the street. The arrogant, disapproving authorities. The visceral opponents invested in the status quo and protecting their own stake in a future totalitarianism. Who is going to blink?

One problem is that the old GDR had the disapproval of the world to consider, but the new Keepers of the West have only their approving peers, including our own government. Let us hope that the complex of uprisings Sarrazin mentions are strong enough.

So this is a rainbow of reactions to PEGIDA, beginning with the PI enthusiasm laced with anti-regime snarkiness, moving to the head of the AfD party’s approval as contrasted with the disapproval of “officials,” then the measured but deadly response of Thilo Sarrazin, and finally an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sample of how the establishmentarian press and some government circles reply to such impertinence.

The first translation is from Politically Incorrect:

The Establishment Panics — The Masses in Dresden Are Changing Germany

by Wolfgang Hübner, Frankfurt a/M

The Green-Left-Liberal zeitgeist of the “antifa-republic” is reacting with insults, adjurations and threats to the broad, gradually accelerating popular insurgency against Islamization, uncontrolled immigration, abuse of asylum, social deterioration and gender insanity. The aggressive but fruitless attempt to isolate and smother the protest in Dresden — as well as an increasing number of other German cities and regions — by means of the tried and true methods of marginalization and the “Nazi-club” is doomed to failure. The sober reality is the powerful alliance of all those who are now freeing themselves of their passivity and are no longer allowing themselves to be tutored by politicians, media, princes of the Church and the gigantic social industry. Everything is as it should be and all that is needed is a selfless, humble welcoming culture between Flensburg and Konstanz.

What initially became evident with the founding and first election successes of AfD (Alternative for Germany) is taking on the characteristics of a mass movement against the visible, tangible and calculable aberrations in Germany which are evident to every contemporary who is paying attention. In fact, it took a long time before the grumbling at the much maligned Stammtische [regular, informal meetings at the same pub] and in countless internet forums became an active protest in the streets and squares. It is no surprise that this protest had its first mass effect in a metropolis in the East, namely Dresden. In the former GDR, there still linger the memory and the consciousness of the power of the people to budge even totally ossified circumstances.

Angela Merkel’s “no-alternative” bourgeois era of politics is still not over, but it is no longer accepted without question. To be sure, the human face of these paralyzing epochs in German history can one more time ensure with actual socialist majorities the blessing of her party — now emptied of both intellect and personnel. But the Chancellor would be just as bereft of power or argument in the face of a genuine popular movement as are members of her cabinet and all the political and media establishment, who have been emitting commentaries on the events in Dresden which are as ignorant as they are dense. This proves only one thing: The power elite are prepared for almost anything — except the unexpected uprising of the sovereign folk. Seldom until now has it become so obvious that an aloof nomenklatura can form, one that will not accept itself and its conception of social order being questioned in a completely democratic fashion.

Et Tu, Pakistan?

Pakistan has just suffered its version of Beslan: at least 130 people, most of them children, were killed in a jihad attack on a school in Peshawar carried out by a branch of the Taliban.

In the wake of the hostage-taking in Sydney, this horrific event is a reminder that Islamic terror attacks are not mounted solely against non-Muslims, but also target Muslims who are not Islamic enough. Statistically, takfiri-denounced Muslims and/or innocent Islamic bystanders are far more likely than kuffar to be killed by mujahideen.

One reason for the widespread slaughter of Muslims by Muslims is that it is much easier for a jihad group to mount a successful attack in a pest-hole like Pakistan than in a civilized Western country. There is a larger population of potential jihad recruits, the security forces are less sophisticated in their ability to monitor and interdict a terrorist conspiracy, and the government, the army, and the police are more extensively infiltrated by terror-minded zealots who can help a plot succeed.

The incident in Peshawar was billed by the attackers as a retaliation for recent military operations against the Taliban. The fact that the location was an army-run school was considered sufficient justification under sharia to make it a lawful target. The attackers were ordered to “ordered to shoot the older students but not the children”. Evidently ten-year-olds are not considered “children” in northwestern Pakistan, because some of the victims were that young.

One interesting aspect of the story is this quote from a witness: “The attackers had long beards, wore shalwar kameez and spoke Arabic.” Shalwar kameez is the standard form of dress for both men and women in much of Pakistan and also (mostly for men) in parts of Afghanistan, a combination of trousers and long shirt. So were the invading mujahideen Arabs who had adopted the local costume as a disguise? Or have the Taliban taken up speaking Arabic?

Below are excerpts from the report in The Hindustan Times:

Pakistan’s ‘national tragedy’: Peshawar school siege kills 130; all 6 Taliban militants dead

At least 130 people, most of them children, were killed on Tuesday when about six Taliban gunmen stormed an army-run school in northwest Pakistan, in one of the bloodiest terror attacks in the country in years.

The bloody Taliban raid on the school in Peshawar ended after almost eight hours, police said, with all six attackers dead.

“The combat operation is over, the security personnel are carrying out clearance operation and hopefully they will clear the building in a while,” police official Abdullah Khan told AFP.

“Dead bodies of six terrorists have been found in the building.”

Senior police official Shafqat Malik confirmed the combat phase of the response had ended, while chief army spokesperson General Asim Bajwa said on Twitter that the operation was “closing up”.

Bajwa said explosive devices planted in school buildings by the militants were slowing clearance efforts. Special forces soldiers had rescued more than a dozen staff and students, he added.

The attack that also left more than 120 injured began around 11.30am (India time) after the group of militants entered the Army Public School when about 500 students and teachers were believed to be inside.

A student who managed to escape the carnage said, “An army doctor was teaching us about first aid when attackers came from behind our school and started firing.”

“Our teachers locked the door and we ducked on the floor, but they broke down the door. Initially they fired in the air and later started killing the students, but left the hall suddenly. The attackers had long beards, wore shalwar kameez and spoke Arabic.”

Another student who survived the attack said soldiers came to the rescue during a lull in the firing. “When we were coming out of the class we saw bodies of our friends lying in the corridors. They were bleeding. Some were shot three times, some four times.”
