Palm Sunday, 2019

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Passion Week in the Catholic and Anglican denominations. Thus, Pange Lingua is often used as a processional hymn, with parishioners carrying palms around the church.

As does much of the Gregorian chant I learned in school, this one has stayed with me, running through my head whilst walking. Notice the cadence.

Each religion has its own language. Years ago, a friend of mine converted from her childhood Baptist faith to Catholicism. She found terms like “Passion Week” quite risqué. Never mind ideas such as “transubstantiation”…

Doing The Brexit Split

My title isn’t really what Dr. Turley says. He’s quite hopeful that Farage is going to come in and team up with UKIP, the party he left in a huff, and together they will sweep Brexit to the finish line.

I hope Britons aren’t taken in by their version of Joe Biden, OE –Opportunist Extraordinaire. Come to think of it, except for his accent, Mr. Farage would fit right in with all of DimBulb crazies here who are terrified of nationalists, populists, and assorted folk to the right. Ol’ Nigel wants to have his cake and eat Batten’s share, too.

The man is a disgrace.

Here’s part of a BBC report:

[…] Mr Farage told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “In terms of policy, there’s no difference (to UKIP), but in terms of personnel there is a vast difference.

“UKIP did struggle to get enough good people into it but unfortunately what it’s chosen to do is allow the far right to join it and take it over and I’m afraid the brand is now tarnished.”

He promised the Brexit Party would be “deeply intolerant of all intolerance” and would represent a cross-section of society.

Deeply intolerant of intolerance, eh? That makes you intolerant, dude, and so “tarnished” you’d need a gallon of Brasso to clean up tolerably. Hie thee to a Logic class forthwith, Mr. Almost-All-Things-To-A-Select Few.

I’ll bet Farage makes a hex sign when he sees an image of Tommy Robinson, who is twice the man this flibbertigibbet could ever be.

Assange at Long Last

This is one of those cases where the elites rule while Constitutional law and/or due process is ignored in favor of cheap tricks.

It remains to be seen what Trump’s Justice Department will do with a native-born Australian, now a citizen of Ecuador. To punish Assange is to single him out, especially after our long history of complicity with security leaks, the most egregious of which date back to Nixon’s time in office but none of those can be compared to the on-going attempt to bring down Trump.

Turley says we bribed Ecuador to stand down on and let us have him. Bagged and gagged by now.

Let’s see if the MSM wax double standards on the story…anything you find, please link in the comments.

I Once Was Blind…

A cautionary tale about centralized medicine:

Thousands of elderly people in Britain are left to go blind because of rationing of eye surgery in the National Health Service (NHS), a report revealed on Saturday (April 6).

The Times newspaper said a survey by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO) found tens of thousands of elderly people are left struggling to see because of an NHS cost-cutting drive that relies on them dying before they can qualify for cataract surgery.

The survey has found that the NHS has ignored instructions to end cataract treatment rationing in defiance of official guidance two years ago.

The RCO said its survey has found 62 percent of eye units retain policies that require people’s vision to have deteriorated below a certain point before surgery is funded.

With more than 400,000 cataract operations carried out each year, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) concluded that there was no justification for policies that denied patients cataract removal surgery until they could barely see.

The RCO said that refusal to fund surgery was insulting and called into question the entire system through which the NHS approves treatments.

Ms Helen Lee of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) said: “Cataracts can have a dramatic impact on someone’s ability to lead a full and independent life, potentially stopping them from driving and increasing their chance of serious injury by falling. The NICE guidelines make it clear cataract surgery is highly cost-effective and should not be rationed. It is nonsensical for clinical commissioning groups to deny patients this crucial treatment.”

Ms Julie Wood, CEO of NHS Clinical Commissioners, which represents local funding bodies, defended the restrictions.

She told the Times: “NICE guidance is not mandatory and clinical commissioners must have the freedom to make clinically led decisions that are in the best interests of both individual patients and their wider local populations. The NHS does not have unlimited resources.”

Having just experienced cataract surgery myself, I was curious as to how common it was and what the waiting period entailed. While one is on the operating table, there is time for conversation. So I asked the surgeon how many of these procedures he’d done. He thought for a moment and said, “probably several thousand by now. I have two days of surgery in this suite, and one at another site. I like to keep busy so a good day is between six and twelve patients. And of course, I see my patients the next day in a follow-up visit.” The whole thing, including prep and post, takes a bit more than an hour, and I was given every single phone contact the doctor has; they don’t want complications. And, yes, it is relatively painless. [Keep in mind that I’m comparing it to chronic fibromyalgia so a bit of stinging when the B puts in the multitude of eye drops for two weeks – the sting recedes – is the most tedious part.] Now, ten hours post-op, I am using both eyes to tell you about it.

In my early years of motherhood, I had some experience of “socialized” medical care while my then-husband was in the military. The docs were grumpy – they had to serve six years back then because of the draft. I liked the corpsmen, though. Very nice fellows and responsive to the needs of a young family. The docs? Not so much. When one pediatrician found out I was breastfeeding he gestured toward my infant and harumphed, “So when he grows up to be neurotic, will you blame it on his toilet training?”

Many Indian tribes report the same dissatisfaction with their government medical care, as do our veterans. One of the first things tribes do with their casino-funded bank accounts is to procure private medical care for everyone. The veterans don’t have that luxury.

Maybe Britain could start a lottery for health care. Brits love to bet. Besides, it worked for the Irish for many years.

I found a free Kindle Margaret Thatcher autobiography on Amazon. Haven’t gotten to her views on medical care but she was a true Methodist believer in local planning so I have my suspicions where this is going.

By tne way, the British method of politics seems eminently sane, as least compared to ours…and compared to what Thailand does, per H. Numan’s delightful essays.

On Being Snookered by Penny-ante Political Obfuscations

Hey, Jordan Peterson! Your descriptions of what young men need if they are ever to mature in our Western world are spot on. But as a political philosopher, you lack the foundation to address the ugly divisions the Left has driven into the heart of civil discourse.

Which is unfortunate for us all. You are good at stating what you don’t know, but sometimes you enter into the realms of what you don’t know that you don’t know, i.e., what you have glossed over or failed to comprehend. Yes, you want your reach to transcend politics but it can’t since the Left has inextricably bound the political into every facet of life, a merging the right rejects categorically. You say the right can be seen by its identity politics but you don’t say the left does exactly the same thing. Try saying “All Lives Matter” in public and see where it gets you.

People are anxious to pigeonhole your ideas and you want to allay their fears that you might be -gasp! – right wing. You attempt to declare your political agnosticism while refusing to bow to an overweening leftist identitarianism. When you refuse the strictures of compelled speech from the rulers of Canada, you are speaking from the right. Compelled speech is a leftist/socialist trope; it is the Right which defends freedom of speech.

By the way, how many rightwingextremists have shown up to disrupt your talks, trash your ideas, or make you feel unsafe in public? And if you think Charlottesville was reality-based, you’ve been snookered, sir. We live near there; we watched it go down. From the beginning, the whole mess was a false flag set-up.

Read Tomas Sowell, sir. Across more than fifty years, his body of work, his opera of conservative political philosophy, has been consistently correct. In his eighties now, he’s still sharp. Here’s his Amazon Page It’s a wealth of information that never stale dates.

Meanwhile, listen to Dr. Turley explain why Nazism -National Socialism- is leftist. It did not come from the Right.

Now tell us why wanting to be a nation-state with one’s own peculiar culture, language and traditions is not a good thing. Ask Les Québécois why they won’t give up and join you Anglos. Do you think they should? If not, why not? Compare and contrast.

What Is Our President Up To?

Does anyone know?

Tucker Carlson has some ideas:

But even he never mentions the elephant in the room: THE BORDER WALL.

My vote for Trump began as an ABC – Anybody But Clinton. But he sold me on the wall. Lord knows the socialist Dems had long abandoned our sovereignty; does anyone recall back when they were for a wall?

So I figured forceful action would remedy that, but it turned out all we got was lots of words – logorrhea at times – but no action in our beleaguered southwest.

Oh, President Trump! Tais toi and start building. That was your strength in real life: building stuff in the most over-regulated city in the world. We believed you.

Maybe Tucker Carlson is right. Maybe the White House is not the place you want to spend your seventies. I’d suggest stepping aside for some other GOP candidate, but they’re little better than the Dims…

Happy Birthday, Emmylou Harris

Ms. Harris wrote this song for her father, Walter Harris, a Marine who served in both World War II and Korea as a fighter pilot, flying Corsairs. He was shot down in Korea and spent almost a year in a North Korean POW camp. Major Harris is buried in Arlington National Cemetery*, where lie many of our heroes.

*[Arlington belonged to the family of Robert E. Lee’s wife, a Custis by birth. The Union took over the house and began burying their dead on the property well before the Civil War ended. Lee never lived there again, moving to Richmond after the War.]

Hey, Macron, Tais-Toi! Consider Louis XVI…

The Baron and I were discussing this latest unfortunate incident in the Yellow(ed) Vest demonstrations. [They’re getting yellowed with age on those French streets, y’all. That poor woman was a “jolie jeune fille” when these marches started so long ago. Now she’s a discard being lectured by Macron.]

Macron! Of all people!

Rumors are he has a helicopter on standby… when the going gets tough, he evidently plans to get going.

Well, those Yellow Vests used a forklift to open some gates, remember? Emmanuel had better hope one of them doesn’t have an anti-aircraft gun in his sac à dos.

Here’s the late Alan Sherman, a favorite of Americans of a certain age, warning Louis XVI what was gonna happen. Macron should pay careful attention.

Mr. Sherman’s lyrics are below the fold.

Pigs and Monkeys and Mossad, Oh My!

David Wood has done us all a favor by shining his ray of sunlight on this dark, demented “thinking”:

And, as he usually does, David lets the Koran hoist itself with its own petard. The shouting imam in New Zealand, blaming Mossad and Zionists for this latest mass killer, is the usual predictable Koranic Kutie. I’ll bet most of us can sing along with him by now.

Meanwhile, The Apostate Prophet tells us what it’s like to grow up in Germany learning his ABCs of hatred against the kuffar. Just so you know its origins.

Are we recycling the 1930s all over again? A place where anti-Semitism is cool, and the anti-Semites are free again to shout the same filth all over again? But only certain haters are given a free pass on foaming at the mouth. Others are so muzzled by political correctness that they live in hiding or under guard — Salman Rushdie and Geert Wilders come to mind.

What is so mind-boggling about that New Zealand imam’s rant is not his “anti-Zionist” tirade, but that New Zealand is so accepting of it. There don’t seem to be (m)any MSM reports on this phenomenon. I’ve been hanging around all day, looking for items. They’re few and far between.

Is there any antidote to this moral rot? We are seeing it ever more openly now, even in the U.K. Parliament and the U.S. Congress. Anti-Semitism is becoming cool among the socialists…

The nutjob who massacred those Muslims in New Zealand is being compared to Breivik. As I said at the time of ABB’s massacres, first in Oslo and later on Utøya island, people in a position of power who sincerely wanted to know the deeper reality behind his Manifesto needed to have a forensic analysis done on his work. Of course, they didn’t want the truth; they wanted the circus they created, so the real authors got away with murder. More murder than they’d planned on perpetrating, perhaps. Their monster had a mind of his own; he got away and then went off-script. They didn’t know ABB didn’t care if he got caught. ABB had plans for his incarceration. Besides, I think they sold him a bill of goods about being the leader of a neo-Nazi movement which would rise up and free him from that court.

Later on, in prison, after Breivik sent out a formal retraction of “his” ideas to the major news media, admitting he’d been a neo-Nazi the whole time, the MSM ignored this plot twist. They liked him stuck in the hardened concrete they’d poured into his place in history so there he would stay, anti-Islamic to the end.

This new nutjob, at the other end of the earth, is even now having the cement poured around him before it’s been determined if he’s sane. Or if he had help with composing his “manifesto”. Nope, they’re setting him in stone, and will carve the narrative to fit their own nefarious needs, Truth be damned. You can bet the annual OIC report on “Islamophobic attacks” will feature this one big time. Usually, all they have to write about is endless accounts of bacon left on the threshold of a mosque or some (easily removed) graffiti. Now they have a story with teeth, and we will hear them growling over it far longer than we heard about 9/11 or 7/7. Don’t you wonder what PR term will come to designate this NZ massacre?

A mass killer is, ipso facto, crazy. It doesn’t matter if he’s legally ‘sane’, he’s still a whackjob. But then, so are those who claim his weapons belong to Mossad also insane. They are not only whackjobs, they’re selling their souls for anti-Semitic ABCs they took in with their mother’s milk.

Evil and unutterably sad.

Oh, I just remembered Trevor Loudon’s website, New Zeal. Find it here. For whatever glitchy reason, my browser doesn’t want to open it. I can say if you scroll down a bit, he’ll have more accurate information than you’re likely to get elsewhere. Please report back — don’t know when I’ll be able to open it.

Sweden Democrats Are Losing Their Leper Status

Gates of Vienna has been in the SD’s corner for many years. It is heartening indeed to see them rise, both at home and in the EU Parliament. These people have paid in blood and tears for their slow but sure progress.

Maybe they ought to replace their flower with the image of a tortoise…I’ll see if the Baron has one to hand.

You Thought Occasional Cortex Was an Accident?

Nope. There’s a guy behind the curtain that shields her from reality. AOC was groomed by rich capitalists. Think of those talent shows that find performers who look good and sound good reading a script. Then polish them up till they’re good enough for prime time. Simon Cowell comes to mind…but he’s in real show business, not politics.

In this case, it’s not Simon C. doing the grooming but an entity (a PAC, Political Action Committee) called Justice Democrats.

What a group of motley capitalists behind that curtain. Like, man, these people are part of the American nomenklatura, fer sure. And just like all totalitarian groups, they expel anyone who ever had a wrong thought, no matter how long ago they expressed those ideas. So Cenk Uygur has been airbrushed.

OC – or AOC, if you insist – is our latest actress in Washington. And she’s having more fun than a blond would. So take that, white guys!

UPDATE: My eyes still aren’t back to normal from cataract surgery. Accidentally posted the wrong video. Corrected now.

The EU’s Smoky Back Room

Or, for a more universal analogy, how about “Watch your sausages made here”?

This is what we Americans would call “insider baseball” – i.e., of great interest to the players involved and their fervent fans, but for others, not so much.

However, there are always exceptions and this is one. It was educational for me,

Because this video concerns Viktor Orban’s party’s outlook in the coming EU elections, the comments by this speaker will be of interest to many of our readers. It certainly held my attention, enough so that I’ll be watching the outcome of the May elections with great interest.

So which path, of the four he mentions, do you think Orban’s party will follow?

[NB: I had my first cataract surgery today so my moderation of comments will be rare. But just you watch: the B is much harder than I am on offenders. He’s already caught a few I missed and let in without seeing their infelicities, leading to my decision to let him do them all. So if your deathless prose never appears, don’t blame me.]

St Patrick’s Day – When the Irish Invaded Canada

Who knew?

This fine fellow researched the whole tilting-at-windmills brouhaha — including all the internecine fighting that kept that Hunger Generation from succeeding.

It’s here:

When the Irish Invaded Canada: The Incredible True Story of the Civil War Veterans Who Fought for Ireland’s Freedom

The thing is, those fighting Irish didn’t actually want Canada; they simply thought they could use it as a hostage to gain freedom for Ireland and they worked hard to make it happen.

The new Irish immigrants flooded to America in order to work for something to eat. Thus, they fought on both sides of the U.S. Civil War and then kinda, sorta joined forces afterward to secure Canada. The rationale was that if they held Canada hostage then the English would have to let much-poorer Ireland go in exchange.

Several things came out of the attempt. First, the British moved the capital further in from its border with America in order to make it more secure. Secondly, the overdue idea of founding a confederation of Canada’s territories became a reality much sooner than might have been the case otherwise.

‘Tis a fascinating book if you’ve the necessary DNA component which allows one to read gobs of stories about in-fighting and betrayal. Though he mentions it, what the writer doesn’t cover sufficiently, me thinks, is the reality of America’s desire for grabbing Canada its ownself. We had taken Texas from Mexico by then and bought Alaska from Russia. Bringing in Canada had great appeal for many Americans. For Canadians, not so much. They are too peaceable; being part of the rowdy U.S. would cause a profound unease. They weren’t called Loyalists for nothing.

Back during the Irish shenanigans, some of America’s politicians bloviated about the desirability of owning the whole hog, but those who did have an eye on the North wanted someone else to do the dirty work. There was little dirty work the Irish weren’t willing to do to get the English out of the Emerald Isle.

A recent video of the author’s talk in Lawrence Massachusetts about this bit of history is below the fold.
