Elisabeth’s Voice is Growing

We’ve just concluded the fourth day of our appeal to help Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff fight a “hate-speech” charge in her native Austria. Elisabeth had the temerity to speak out about Islam, and the Austrian establishment has responded by filing a criminal charge against her.

Elisabeth's Voice (small)Today Elisabeth received a ringing endorsement from LTC (ret.) Allen West, who is now in the final phase of his campaign for Congress in Florida’s 22nd District:

Elisabeth, you saw what happened with Geert Wilders, just STAND and never ever back down from your principles and love of our western civilizational values.

Best regards, Allen

Since last night we have added seven more blogs to the list of participants in Elisabeth’s Voice: Yid With Lid, Citizen Warrior, Tasty Infidelicacies, Het Vrije Volk, summer patriot — winter soldier, Here’s The Right Side Of It, and Irate, Tireless Minority.

The complete list of participants:

Readers who wish to donate to Elisabeth’s defense fund should visit the Save Free Speech site. The defense fund is not under her control, and disbursements from it will be made solely to pay her legal fees.

The Dogmatic Denial of Reality

Our Norwegian correspondent Zylark returns with an essay about the persistent failure of postmodern intellectuals to perceive and understand the world as it is, rather than as they would prefer it to be.

Marat-Sade

The Dogmatic Denial of Reality
by Zylark

Why many intellectuals miss the point, and many who are not considered intellectuals do not.

Education is a double-edged sword, especially in the social sciences. It is no secret that most higher educational facilities are dominated by the more liberal professors and other like-minded faculty. It is the prevalent culture.

And that is quite fine, in principle. The campus is supposed to be a free zone, where ideas are to be tested on merit, not prejudice. Which requires tolerance, a mindset ready to admit fault, and not least the recognition that nothing is holy, beyond criticism.

It sounds nice, and in the more nature-oriented sciences, this is how it works for the most part. But in the social sciences it does not. Various social sciences have forgotten about reality, and instead got hung up in their own constructed ideal view of existence. They mistake how they want reality to be for how reality really is.

That is how you can find people calling themselves scientists who claim one’s sex is arbitrary to one’s development and identity. That one’s role and identity in society, not least with regards to one’s sex and sexuality is determined according to learned societal stereotypes, not the genes and sex itself and the inherent predispositions inherited with them.

In this view any girl can behave as a boy, and vice versa. Naturally, however, anyone more inclined to following actual evidence (as a proper scientist would) can tell you that there are some very significant differences in the inherent psychological makeup of boys and girls. It is not a coincidence that boys tend to play with cars, and girls with dolls, generally speaking.

This denial of realities is part of a dogma. It goes under the guise of a liberal intellectual mindset best described as postmodern relativism. That is: all ideas have equal validity. This dogma asserts that all basic understandings of reality, and as a continuation morality and ethics, are equal. Boy? Girl? Doesn’t matter.

This is, of course, true in the sense that both sexes have equal worth, and should enjoy equal opportunity. It is not true in the sense that both sexes possess the same interests, however. Obviously, this is not a clear cut dichotomy. It is more a soft-edged overlap. As are most things in nature.

But you do not need a higher degree to know that most girls like to play with dolls, and most boys like to play with cars. You do need a higher degree to say that sex has nothing to do with a choice of favorite toys.

A similar situation obtains with regards to the West and Islam. A basic denial of facts. Various intellectuals and politicians alike assume Islam is just another religion, like those practiced by, say, Buddhists, Hindus, or Christians. Strike one. Next they assume religion is by definition a force for good. Strike two. And finally, strike three, they assume Islam can be tamed. They are very aware of the more feral variations of Islam, but they think in some ideal world, when it encounters tolerance, Islam will be domesticated.

Indeed, some even think that when Islam meets the West here in Europe — and providing we Europeans give up a few hard-won freedoms, all will be nice and honky-dory. As the “peace researcher” Johan Galtung claims:

“If we resist, the Islamic future will be hard rather than soft. Immigration, the large movements of people in this time, will bring this along. No one can stop it. And remember, the foreigners in their time were asked to come here, and they came here for economic and historical reasons that no one can do anything to change.”

And this is a world-renowned “peace researcher”! What he is prescribing is that Western Civilization should roll over and die. To submit. We’ve brought this on ourselves, which is true, but we cannot resist, which is false.

Now, I’ve met Galtung on a number of occasions, and I understand his intellectual position. Indeed, many of his ideas and conflict-resolution models have merit. But only insofar as a few assumptions are met. In essence that there are some commonalities between two conflicting extremities that one can work with to create “a third way”. Not a compromise as such, but rather a new way of working together.

His favorite example is of the financier husband and Buddhist wife, who grow apart due to differing world views and interests. The compromise solution, is for each to do his or her own thing. Spelling divorce in the end. His third way is for the husband and wife to start a Buddhist bookshop. Merging the business interest of the husband and the Buddhist interest of the wife. All fine and good so far.

But I do not quite see how you can merge the “Kill the Jews and subjugate the infidels!” interest of Islam with “let’s all be nice to each other, and make a profit!” tolerance of the West…

Yes, pacifism and dialogue worked with Gandhi and the British empire, but in that case both parties were not that keen on actual violence, for various reasons. And neither party was hell-bent on forcing the other to submit to his ideology. Gandhi advocated the same pacifist approach towards the Japanese during WW2 as they came closer to India and looked like they might threaten the British dominion. How likely is it that if the Japanese had been victorious, India would today be a free country? And how long would Gandhi have lived pressuring Japan rather than the UK?

The fact is that civility works only as long as one’s opponent is civilized. In all other cases, only force will work. There are no negotiating with despotism.

Galtung’s hope lies in a benign version of Islam. Here in Europe we spent a few centuries taming Christianity. I don’t think we have the patience to tame Islam.

And most who live in the free world and see how Islam behaves more or less understand that on instinct. However, some with higher degrees in the social sciences still deny reality. They live in their own ideal world of the imagination.

Living in the real world, keeping one’s mind on it, brings a perspective that academia forgets at its own peril.

Jihad Without Borders

Al Qaeda: Bulgaria
(Headline: “Al Qaeda: Bulgaria”)

Our Bulgarian correspondent RR has translated a pair of articles from the Bulgarian media about the migration of Islamic terror from Lebanon and Turkey into Bulgaria, Greece, and points west — and this is before Turkish membership in the EU.

RR includes this introduction:

According to recent news articles, Bulgaria is a legitimate target by Islamic terrorists because it sent soldiers in support of the American occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan [see story #1]. Linked in “Related news” was the brief news about the captured Turkish terrorist [see story #2], which made me think how many of them travel across Europe without restrictions.

“Europe without borders” was an idyll featuring free, happy and friendly people, maybe flower-girdled and high on freedom (and pot), moving around and exchanging ideas, diversity, and sex, without any border checks from Lisbon to Umea or from Limerick to… to say Diarbekir in Asia Minor, why not? The liberal oligarchs are keen to admit the 75-million-strong Muslim Turkey into the EU.

Somehow, this hippie visionary dream of Europe without the nasty border cops became a reality.

But it seems that borders still matter.

From 24 Chasa:

Islamists from the refugee camp Ain al Helwe in South Lebanon have penetrated into Bulgaria and Greece on false passports. This was disclosed in an investigation by the Lebanese journalist Hassan Aliq published in the newspaper “Al Ahbar” and the site orientbg.info.

The camp Ain al Helwe is the base of the Asbat-al-Ansar jihadist formation, whose speaker announced recently in an interview for 24 Hours that Bulgaria is a legitimate target for al-Qaeda because of the presence of a Bulgarian military contingent in Afghanistan.

The member of the Central Committee of the Fattah Movement, Sultan Aynen, is cited as disclosing: “Over the last three months some persons persecuted by the Lebanese courts made the effort to escape from the refugee camp. To this date more than 20 men managed to leave the camp and have arrived in Europe. Some of them reached Greece and are staying in Athens. Others reside in Bulgaria. Some of those persons were arrested in those two countries, but freed from custody afterwards”.

Aynen suggested that the illegals were supporters of the “ultra-extremist” fraction “Jund ash Sham” — fighters, who left the “moderate” Asbat-al-Ansar.

Middle East specialist Prof. V. Chukov commented on the news: “The original material from the Lebanese source is controversial on some points. What surfaces clearly is the fact that this country (Bulgaria) has arrested some mujahideen, who possibly took part in the bloody battles with Lebanese government forces two years ago and are now actively persecuted by the Lebanese state. Now that this has happened, it is quite logical that their militant faction voices threats against Bulgaria”…

As an introduction to the second article, RR notes:

This cross-border promenade seems never to stop in Eurabia. Below is a recent example from Greece and Bulgaria, a European backyard normally ignored when Paris or Rome are burning — at least in the suburbs for now. But the backyards may hide some really dangerous and alien creatures:12-foot Burmese pythons in Florida, say, or Palestinian “Jund-ash-Shams” Islamist fighters in Bulgaria and Greece.

From DNES:

Sofia, Bulgaria. — Early yesterday morning the Border Control Police in Vidin detained a dangerous terrorist wanted by Interpol, the Interior Ministry announced. The Turkish citizen has crossed uneventfully several Schengen area countries, although an international detaining order was issued against him two years ago.

M.E., 36 years of age, was detained upon his entry in Bulgaria on the ferryboat Kalafat-Vidin, coming from Germany via Hungary, Romania, and heading through Bulgaria to Turkey. He was using a travel permit issued by Germany on January 13, 2006, giving him the right of free movement within EU territory

He is wanted by the Turkish authorities on a detaining order from July 24, 2007, after an effective sentence in absentia by the Supreme Court in Ankara to seven years in prison for membership in and funding of the terrorist organization THKP/Dev Sol, and participation in terrorist activities.

RR adds:

THKP/Dev Sol is a small Marxist terrorist faction; I wonder if a Muslim terrorist supported by the Muslim Brotherhood would be so eagerly sought after by the Turkish authorities…

And just how many terrorists crisscross at any given point the already non-existent borders within this, our Europe of Dreams?

Raising Our Voices

** UPDATED **

Elisabeth’s Voice (small)After the third day of the Elisabeth’s Voice appeal, we’ve added twelve thirteen blogs or websites to the original list of participants.

The latest additions just came in a short while ago, from Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs and Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch, the two largest blogs in the Counterjihad.

Having this kind of power-hitting behind her will help give Elisabeth the extra push she needs, not just to raise funds, but to raise awareness in the United States about the risk to free speech in Europe. Many thanks to Pamela and Robert for stepping forward.

This is exactly what the founders of Elisabeth’s Voice were hoping for when we launched the original appeal on Friday. Now we have eighteen participants, and the list of big American blogs has dropped to ten. Not bad!

The list of participants as of Sunday night Monday morning:

In addition, ACT! For America will be backing her big-time, and today Citizen Warrior also volunteered to help.

The remaining ten of the original list of major American blogs:

If any of our readers have reason to believe that one or more of the remaining blogs in the list is likely to read your email, please drop them a note and ask them to be part of Elisabeth’s Voice.

Anyone who wishes to contribute to Elisabeth’s defense fund should visit the Save Free Speech site. A reminder: the defense fund is not under her control, and disbursements from it will be made solely to pay her legal fees.

The Lawfare Case Against Pamela Geller

I’ve been chained to my keyboard ever since Geert Wilders’ case returned to court on October 4. By the time the judges in the trial were dismissed — which is when I otherwise would have taken a brief rest — the court date for Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff had been set, and all my energies since then have remained focused on helping her.

Pamela GellerAs a result, I missed what happened to Pamela Geller. On October 13, Pamela found out that she was being sued for $10 million by a Muslim who didn’t like what she said about him. Many thanks to the reader who brought this to my attention.

As I said in my post the other day, Elisabeth isn’t the only one who will be targeted for what she says — all of us are at risk. Pamela Geller also needs and deserves our support.

Here are some excerpts from her post:

$10,000,000 Lawsuit Against Pamela Geller, Cites Free Speech

Lawfare Lawsuit Brought by Omar Tarazi — Litigation Jihad

In July of 2009, a young teenage girl ran away from her home in Ohio, after her father threatened to kill her upon discovering her conversion out of Islam. When she disappeared, many of her friends and those of us who had heard of her plight thought that she had met the worst of fates (as almost of these cases end the same horrible way). Imagine our joy when she emerged alive.

Who can forget? Rifqa Bary: “I want to be free”

What followed was a campaign of intimidation and persecution by Islamic supremacists, her parents and CAIR. Their objective was to shut her up and return her to the hellish home she fought so desperately to escape.

The Islamic supremacists lost. The lovers and defenders of freedom were victorious. But no good deed goes unpunished.

David Yerushalmi is representing me in the outrageous ten million dollar Islamic supremacist lawsuit brought by Omar Tarazi, lawyer for the parents of Rifqa Bary, whose father threatened to kill her after the Noor mosque ratted her out to her parents. Members of the Noor mosque had spied on her and found out that she had converted out of Islam. Scroll this link.

Tarazi has been a featured speaker at the Noor mosque that spied on Rifqa and publicly ridiculed her. The pressure on Rifqa Bary was intense, the fatwas calling for her death numerous.

The Barys had been working closely with Muslim Brotherhood front, Hamas-linked CAIR to return this poor tortured girl to her violent home. Atlas readers fought hard for Rifqa. We rallied, covered her trials to return her home, sent hundreds of Christmas cards in a holiday campaign (the lawyer Tarazi tried to have the cards seized and banned — unsuccessfully, I might add) and we contacted Florida and Ohio politicians and officials to keep Rifqa safe from her Islamic fundamentalist home and mosque.

Islamic supremacists sprung into action.

[…]

We won, but Islamic supremacists are not known for being terribly good sports. Here is the AP’s take on the lawsuit:

Blogger who backs runaway Christian convert cites First Amendment in defamation suit response via FOX 59 news

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A blogger championing the case of a Muslim-to-Christian convert from Ohio says allegedly defamatory comments she’s being sued over were protected free speech.

Atlas Shrugs blogger Pamela Geller also says many of the postings singled out in a federal lawsuit could fall into the realm of hyperbole and not defamation.

Geller says in a federal court filing Tuesday that she is a journalist writing about a matter of public interest and is protected by the First Amendment.

Update From London

Our same EDL correspondent just sent this email:

Just found a cyber cafe where I’m waiting for a train.

The rabbi gave a rousing speech just round the corner from the Israeli embassy. However, before he spoke a left-wing activist threw some water on the sound equipment, which stopped it working for a while. When he spoke there was a crackle from the speakers due to the damage done to the equipment.

The EDL people then dispersed, and around fifty accompanied the group across the London parks to Speakers’ Corner where Muslims seem to always have a predominant presence. When we arrived near the corner the police stopped the rabbi and the EDL from entering Speakers’ Corner, thereby preventing him from speaking there. It seems that Speakers’ Corner now belongs to the Ummah.

In the event, the police were in a difficult position, but the instinct to side with the Muslims, due to years of politically correct indoctrination, seems clear. In the end they let him speak across from Speakers’ Corner and there was a massive crowd of spectators.

There was a police cordon between the EDL and the Muslim denizens of Speakers’ Corner who came over to watch. Some of the EDL did engage some of the Muslims in debate in small groups, so it showed that the EDL are willing to enter into dialogue with individual Muslims. That was productive.

But the principle of Speakers’ Corner is that people are allowed to speak. That is a cornerstone of English culture, and a rabbi was prevented from doing so, presumably because the authorities could not guarantee his safety in an area that is increasingly used by Muslims. Things were peaceful, which of course is a good thing, but it seems that another pillar of freedom of speech in England has now fallen, thanks to the role of Multiculturalism.

Breaking News: Rabbi Unable to Speak at Speakers’ Corner

The American rabbi Nachum Shifren is visiting England to meet with members of the English Defence League and express his solidarity with the European resistance to Islamization. See this post at ICLA for a video of a BBC news report featuring Rabbi Shifren. The report describes (in that well-known snarky BBC tone) the growing transatlantic cooperation among groups opposing Islamization.

This afternoon Rabbi Shifren was scheduled to address the crowd at Speakers’ Corner in London. I’ve just received a phone call from an EDL member at the scene, who reports that the rabbi was prevented from speaking by a group of Muslims who effectively occupied Speakers’ Corner.

The rabbi moved to a location a short distance away to give his speech, but was unable to address supporters at Speakers’ Corner itself.

Speakers’ Corner is the epicenter of the tradition of free speech in England. Up until now it has stood as a sanctuary, a sacred place in the heart of English civil liberties.

If you can’t speak out at Speakers’ Corner, then free speech in England is dead.

A Disturbing Ignorance of Reality

German President Christian Wulff recently stated that “Islam belongs in Germany.”

Ralph Giordano is one of the most outspoken critics of Islamic doctrine in Germany. Below is his open letter to President Wulff, as posted at Politically Incorrect and translated by JLH:

Open letter from Ralph Giordano to Christian Wulff

Dear Mr. President:

“There is no doubt that Christianity belongs in Germany; there is no doubt that Judaism belongs in Germany. That is our Judaeo-Christian heritage. But in the meantime, Islam also belongs in Germany.” This sentence in your address of October 3, made on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the re-unification, reveals in its sweeping generality such a disturbing ignorance of reality and premature blending of basically different systems, that it bids fair to render a person speechless.

MuezzinI will not presume to offer you remedial instruction in history, but such a naïve equivalence of actual Islam with a wish-fulfillment, EU-conforming Islam is obvious here, that someone must object strenuously. Political and militant Islam is not capable of integration. Beyond that, Islam “in general” is problematic enough. As yet it has given no convincing answer to the question of whether it is compatible with freedom of expression, gender equality, pluralism, separation of church and state — in short, with democracy. A dark cloud hovering in the sky of the 21st century, which, by way of a completely failed immigration policy, directly touches the Federal Republic of Germany. In fact two entirely cultures, in two very different stages of development are in collision.

One is the Judaeo-Christian, where — after dark periods, followed by Renaissance, Enlightenment, bourgeois revolutions and their aftermath — the liberal pattern prevailed: a mighty leap forward. The other is the Islamic culture, which still today — after periods of cultural brilliance that could put the West to shame — with all its inner differentiations, displays a general patriarchal-archaic stagnation: obedience-oriented, inimical to secularism, fixated on inequality of the sexes, parental control and unquestioning deference to religious authorities. It is the collision of a culture which severely limits personal freedom and is guided by tradition and religion and another, which — after lengthy aberrations — has been formed as individualistic, primarily Christian and yet secular. Enormous obstacles rise up in this confrontation, and it is Muslims themselves who point them out.

The great Turkish writer Zafer Senocak, laying the scalpel on the sorest spot, says: “Hardly any Islamic ecclesiastic, let alone a devout lay person, is voluntarily in a position to see the central problem in the thinking process of the faith. They are not ready for a critical analysis of their own tradition, a merciless comparison of their faith with the realities of modern society.” Or the unflappable Abbas Baydoun, for many years the feature editor of the Lebanese daily newspaper “As-Safi,” who enters the similarly dangerous territory of unrestricted self-criticism: “Many among us seek excuses not to look in the mirror, in order to spare ourselves the sight of a fearful countenance, the countenance of another Islam, an Islam of isolation and indiscriminate violence, which bit by bit gains the upper hand and soon becomes our true face, as we steer for the high point of delusion.”

Mr. President, what are Salman Rushdie’s “Satanic Verses” to these solemn declarations? Here are Muslims putting an end to the practice of delegating responsibility for their own self-inflicted miseries and grievances to “Europe” or “the great Satan USA” or “the small Satan Israel.” Here, Muslims are pillorying the incapacity of the Islamic world for self reflection; here their own elite are named as the true originators of the crisis. And in the process, they express what no non-Muslim would dare to say: It is not immigration, but Islam that is the problem!

A huge portion of humanity, ripe for revolution — the “umma,” the entire Muslim community, as internally diverse as it is — is threatening to suffocate on its own culturally and religiously determined backwardness and immovability. An equally ominous exclamation can be added to that: the spooky, tinsel-town world of the oil billionaires, the grease spot in the chasm of a cynicism awash in money and gold — as Orham Pamuk says: “That cannot work out well.”

But in Germany, too, Mr. President, there are Muslim voices that respond with skepticism to your inclusion of the Islamic culture in the Judaeo-Christian. The Iranian theologian Hamideh Mohaghegni warns “that the internal Islamic clearances along the way to a Euro-Islam will take twenty or thirty years, and it would still be questionable whether it would prevail here or be overcome by traditional Islam.”

Another voice which urges that attention be paid to the opinion of the people and critically confronts Muslim societies and functionaries of the mosque organizations is the voice of Dr. Ezhar Cezairli, member of the German-Islam conference: “I find it understandable if people who are no part of the rightist scene are afraid of Islamization.” And further: “It is dangerous to the future of Germany that some politicians — through their ignorance of Islamic organizations — are in the process of surrendering the foundations of our enlightened society.”

This can go into the family albums of all those universal huggers, xenophilic one-eyes, social romantics, bleeding hearts on duty, and apostles of conciliation, whose pedagogy of coddling still takes the same line after Thilo Sarrazin, as if it were about a multicultural idyll that could be patched up with a some social-therapeutic actions.

Let there be no misunderstandings, Mr. President: It remains in the interest of our national honor to shield every immigrant, stranger, or foreigner from the plague of racism and its accomplices. At the same time, it is our civic duty to protect ourselves against tendencies, customs, habits, and traditions in the Turkish-Arab minority which, beyond lip service, are negative or even hostile toward the successes of freedom in the democratic republic and its constitutional government.

The decisive obstacles to integration come from the Muslim minority itself, even if you go on the assumption that most of them are peace-loving. It is still disturbing how quickly enormous protests can be organized in the Islamic world the minute Muslims feel insulted or under attack. How quiet it is in the local organizations and mosque groups, however, when, for example, three co-workers in a bible-printer’s in the Turkish town Malatya are massacred, nuns in Somalia are shot to death, and Christians in Pakistan, because of breaking a “blasphemy law,” await their execution in death cells. Icy silence…

The integration/immigration problem demands a fearless as well as a critical language.

Just where are we, that we are afraid of being labeled hostile to strangers or foreigners if we confess our own values? Just where are we, that we have to avoid calling a paternalistic culture — in which the individual is nothing while family and religious community is everything — hostile to integration? What is wrong with saying that in innumerable immigration cases the attraction is not work, but German federal welfare?

“But in the meantime, Islam also belongs in Germany” — really?

Please take note that it is not without danger to express doubts about that — I know what I am talking about. Islam does not know the critical method. Therefore criticism is equated with insult. Which does not mean that there are no critical Muslims.

I carry my contribution by their side, with brave women like Necla Kelek, Seyran Ates, Mina Ahadi, Ayaan Hirsi Ali — and all the other peaceful Muslims in the world.

A postscript to my motive: as a Holocaust survivor I know the difference between Hitler’s Germany and the Federal Republic. Its democracy is sacred to me, because only in it do I feel secure.

Therefore: Whoever lays hand on it is at my throat, whether Muslim, Christian or atheist.

Yours truly,

Ralph Giordano

Unstitching the Republic

The banlieues

Below is an essay from the Le Figaro blog, as translated by Bear via Vlad Tepes. Readers who understand a bit of French may want to take a look at some of the comments on the original post — more than three hundred of them.

What the intifada revealed to the French

by Ivan Rioufol Oct 20th 2010

Not all high-schoolers are troublemakers. But the troublemakers in the last few days, and even now this Wednesday morning in the center of Lyon, are indeed high-schoolers. The majority of them come from city ghettos. They are hooded, and do not march to defend retirement at 60, nor even the system for social protection that could have attracted their parents or grandparents.

They are there to unstitch the republic, its culture and symbols. The most visible being the police and schools. This is why a college was set on fire. The scenes of urban guerrillas that are being reproduced much resemble the images of intifadas of young Palestinians fighting Israeli forces.

In comparison there is no reason, but in these ethnic insurrections from a youth culture, often Muslim, the state is being rejected and is viewed as an oppressor and a colonizer. The savages, each time more daring and organized, remind us of the failure of their integration.

This destruction counteracts the nursery rhymes assuring us that France is the master of its immigrant population. “Integration works,” we are assured. For example, the ancient writings of Jean Pierre Raffarin in Matignon, and Hakim Al-Karoui (Le Monde Oct 10 and 11.) There are of course, many successes that should be more celebrated. But, even if it displeases the bien-pensants, France is the only country in Europe that knows such a fracture of identity, that from now on separates its youth and careens more and more towards civil confrontations. Germany, which has recently acknowledged the failure of its multicultural approach, is not faced with these explosions of hate, which in fact are anti-French racism. It is urgent to open our eyes to this reality, which many want to deny the more it becomes visible. What is observed in these truants is a refusal to integrate within a society that they culturally reject. It is this challenge that the republic must deal with.

Elisabeth’s Voice: A Follow-Up

** UPDATED (4) **

Elisabeth's Voice (small)Yesterday I joined a consortium of four European and one Canadian blogs to form Elisabeth’s Voice, a group of sites working together to help publicize the “hate speech” prosecution against Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff in Austria.

We aim to raise public awareness of what is being done to Elisabeth for the “crime” of speaking out about Islam. Our efforts will help her raise money for her legal defense fund while spreading awareness of the erosion of civil liberties that is underway throughout the West.

Since Friday, five six eight nine ten more sites have signed on. Elisabeth’s Voice now has the following participants:

Also, ACT! For America — for which Elisabeth is Austrian chapter head — has let her know that they will put their formidable organization squarely behind her.

I may have left out some blogs off the list, so if you know anyone who should be on it and isn’t, drop us an email or leave a comment with a link.

When the Europeans asked for my help spreading the word to American sites, I suggested a dozen blogs that are prominent enough to draw significant attention to Elisabeth’s case on this side of the Atlantic. We invited the following sites to help with Elisabeth’s Voice:

As of this afternoon, unfortunately, none of the above had taken up the challenge.

It can be very difficult for a small blog like ours to get the attention of a major site. Prominent bloggers get a lot of email and a lot of appeals to help out, so that any single request tends to get lost in the shuffle. Our efforts are worthwhile, however, because even a single blog of those twelve could increase the profile of Elisabeth’s case by an order of magnitude.

If any of our readers have reason to believe that one or more of the above blogs is likely to read your email, please drop them a note and ask them to be part of Elisabeth’s Voice.

Austria is a small country, and American support for Elisabeth’s case will make a big difference.

Contributors to Elisabeth’s defense fund should visit the Save Free Speech site. A reminder: the defense fund is not under her control, and disbursements from it will be made solely to pay her legal fees.

Next Time: A Better Pretense

Our Dutch correspondent H. Numan offers his thoughts about today’s (actually, yesterday’s) remarkable events in the Geert Wilders trial:

When I wrote to you earlier, because my time is different I only knew about the challenge request. Not that it was granted. This is really unique. It rarely happens a challenge request is granted.

I don’t think more challenge requests have been granted during the last century than people serving life in prison have been pardoned by the queen. It is that rare. In the Netherlands, a life sentence really means ‘until death do us part’ or the queen grants a pardon. This happened about ten times during the last hundred years.

I’m not so sure if this is a victory. Yes, it is a mark of incompetence on the record of those judges. But look at the trial: a bunch of buffoons and clowns trying desperately to make a vigilante trial look prestigious.

The prosecution had already asked for a dismissal of all charges. The lawyers of the accusing parties look like zombies and behave that way.

It was almost a certainty that the court could not do anything else besides dismiss Wilders from prosecution.

It is not Wilders who gets a second chance here, but the court itself. I assume the chief kangaroo Moors would love nothing better than to sentence Wilders personally. But he will be perfectly happy (together with the left-wing opposition) if another kangaroo does it.

A re-trial means, in my opinion, learning from what has happened and making a better pretense that he gets a fair trial.
