Background Information on a Recent Protester Chant

In an interview on Fox News in late April 2024, a student from Columbia University complained about protesters chanting “rape is resistance”. She complained that the protesters “are screaming this”. On the other side of the country, one young lady who had been violently attacked at UCLA was wearing a T-shirt with the words “Rape is Not Resistance”. The word “Not” is only partially obscured. This raises the issue of why these concerns are being raised in the vicinity of the pro-Hamas protesters on both sides of the country? Here is the relevant portion of the interview transcript.

It would not be surprising that the relevant background to more fully comprehend this threat may have been avoided in classes on Middle Eastern history or religion taught in a politically correct fashion.

Firstly it should be mentioned that Muslims consider their Prophet Muhammad as the example of the perfect man. His behavior is the model of proper action. In their terms he is the “Seal of the Prophets” so innovations or changes in behavior are rejected.

There are three canonical foundations of Islamic law. These are the Koran, the Sunna and Hadith. The last consists of supposed quotes or activities of their Prophet as related by observers and quoted from one to another until written down not too long after the death of Muhammad.

An Islamic Law

We now have to consider relevant Islamic Law. While there are appropriate passages in the Koran, an Indian writer decided to highlight a Hadith in order to explain the incidence of rape as a political and religious tool by Muslims. From Ali Sina’s book Understanding Muhammad and Muslims:

p. 39 Rape

Muhammad allowed his men to rape the women captured in raids. However Muslims faced a dilemma. They wanted to have sex with their female captives, but also wanted to return them for ransom and therefore did not want to make them pregnant. Some of these women were already married whose husbands had escaped when taken by surprise and were still alive. The raiders considered the possibility of coitus interruptus (withdrawing from intercourse before ejaculation). Unsure of the best course of action, they sought the counsel of their Prophet. Bukhari reports:

Abu Saeed said “We went out with Allah’s Apostle for the Ghazwa of Banu Al-Mustaliq and we received captives from among the Arab captives and we desired women and celibacy became hard on us and we loved to do coitus interruptus. So when we intended to do coitus interruptus, we said “How can we do coitus interruptus before asking Allah’s Apostle who is present among us?” We asked (him) about it and he said “It is better for you not to do so, for if any soul (till the Day of Resurrection) is predestined to exist, it will exist.”

Muhammed did not forbid raping the captive women. Instead he made an asinine claim that when Allah intends to create someone, nothing can prevent it. He told his men that coitus interruptus is ill-advised because it would be an attempt to thwart the will of Allah. He did not say a word against the rape of the captives, and by discouraging coitus interruptus, he supported forced insemination.

He made even his god legitimize intercourse with women captured in wars, the so-called “right hand possessions,” even if they were married before their capture.

Unlike other nations and cultures which illegalize rape of women in war, no matter how imperfectly that law is applied, it is actually Islamic Law to rape captured women. Worse, since the sayings and examples of their Prophet are expressions of their view of a perfect man, it is strongly encouraged for Muslims to rape captive women. Islamic Law both prohibits what they consider the “bad”, and encourages that which they consider is “good”.

It is proper, normative and “good” for Muslims to commit rape in these circumstances.

It can reasonably be expected that all women under these circumstances will be raped.

Islamic Law in Practice

The Indians have had a long and unfortunate experience with Muslim imperialism. The first invasion of India was in 712-715 CE where the Muslims captured 60,000 women and children in one of the battles, and a total of about 100,000 women and children in one of the campaigns during this invasion. These people were enslaved, providing both labor and reproductive capacity to add to the Muslim population. They were taken back to Muslim lands and a new army bred from them (Khan p. 75-76).

This process was repeated throughout Indian history. A few of the examples are Sultan Mahmud’s invasion during 1001-1002 where 500,000 “mainly women and children” were captured and enslaved (Khan p.~76).

During an invasion of Gujarat in 1299 it is recorded that 20,000 “handsome and elegant maidens” were “[taken] captive” (Khan p.~213). In some cases both men and women were enslaved, the men being used as labor. In the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, 22,000 woman and children were enslaved by Ahmad Shah Abdali. In recent times and within living memory, forced enslavement by Muslims occurred on the Indian subcontinent.

“[e]ven during the upheaval of the Partition of India (1946-47), some 100,000 Hindu and Sikh women were enslaved, carried away and married off to Muslims (Chapter VI)” (Khan, p. 75).

Captive women have served various purposes under Islamic rule. Here is a quote from the section on Sex Slavery and Concubinage.

The female slaves worked as domestic maids and in the backyards, while the young and pretty ones also had to provide sex to their masters. Thus, they not only provided menial services and pleasure to masters, but also helped swell the Muslim populace through procreation. Sex-slavery is not a negligible institution in Islam; Allah has shown utmost seriousness about its practice by repeatedly reminding Muslims about it in the Quran (Khan p. 235).

Muslims have practiced enslavement by war in many parts of the world dating from the beginning of their theocracy. An early case occurred with the conquest of Tripoli in the year 643. Cases in the Mediterranean world to Africa and Europe are discussed in Khan (p. 217-219).

On the Frustration of Some Muslims

It may be necessary to try to explain the astonishing brutality of recent attacks by Muslims in the modern world. For example, Skeptic Infidel writes:

Islam’s scriptural authorities require faithful Muslim’s to “humiliate” non-believers, and to bring them to an understanding of their state of degradation. The humiliation and degradation of women has become, despite Islam’s denials, an extension of this spiritual directive, with sexuality being the tool for the expression of Islamic dominance, as well as a weapon with which to punish the disobedient and the unbelieving…

It is within this cultural dynamic that is to be found the source of the gross overkill and sexual torture that has become the common and consistently characteristic signature of Muslim violence toward their non-Muslim and apostate captives…

In each instance, immediately upon seizing a target and establishing a defensible perimeter, some portion or room of the seized building, was established, solely for the purpose of pursuing a large scale assembly line process of rape, sodomy, sexual torture and mutilation, and seemingly as an after act, the ritual beheading of captives…

On and on, hour after hour, while terrorists engaged in the artifice of negotiation, each in their turn took their merciless pleasure with their chosen victim captives, much of which was recorded on video film for the later amusement and sexual pleasure of those involved and for the pleasure and amusement of their associates.

There exists in fact within the Islamic world, a tremendous demand for such videos, and they are often to be found in the possession of apprehended terrorists, often along with an appreciable collection of kiddie porn.

To its shame and discredit western media and academia remain virtually silent on the prevalence of such forms of Islamic spiritual expression.

The consequences of this brutality are also depicted in other writings. The work of Raymond Ibrahim provides some perspective:

The subhuman treatment of non-Muslim women by jihadi organizations such as the Islamic State or Nigeria’s Boko Haram, where “infidel” women are bought, sold, gang-raped, mutilated, dismembered and burned alive — is relatively well known (thanks to ISIS itself, for disseminating images and videos). Lesser known is that “infidel” women are treated in similar ways all across the Muslim world, as explained by a 2016 report:…

Love Jihad and Istibra

The Love Jihad that takes place in India should also be mentioned. This is where young women of non-Muslim extraction are held captive, raped, forcibly converted to Islam and married to a “suitor”. It is a problem that crops up all too often in recent times.

Moving over to the Levant, one of the released hostages mentioned that her captor was asking frequently about her period and if she had stopped bleeding (Hugh Fitzgerald):

The Hamas terrorist in charge of guarding her, whom she named Muhammad… would constantly ask about her period, inquiring if she was bleeding, if she had washed herself since, and when it would end, she added.

It appears that the reason for this is a Hadith on Istibra.

Istibra is one menstrual period of sexual abstinence for a female slave when she is captured or changes ownership. This is to ensure that there is no confusion on paternity.

Call for Action

When chants of “Rape is Resistance” are made on American university campuses, these should be considered threats of crimes that are part of a longstanding Islamic tradition. This tradition goes back to the very beginning of Islamic history and represent a fundamental part of their relations with non-Muslim populations. They are in the tradition of actual Islamic genocides that were committed against many peoples and nations over the centuries. There should be legal and political consequences for demonstrators and protesters making these threats. Also there should be concern that university administrators, especially those familiar with Islamic history, are tolerating such perverted threats.
