The Dysfunctional European Commission

Samuel Johnson is reported to have said, “Sir, a woman’s preaching is like a dog’s walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.”

Something similar might be said about this TV editorial from German state TV — it’s a fairly run-of-the-mill critique of Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission, but what’s amazing is that it aired on ARD, of all places.

Video transcript:

00:00   If proof were needed of how far removed the European Commission
00:04   is now from the REAL problems of its citizens,
00:07   [EC President] Ursula von der Leyen provided it today.
00:10   Lots of pathos, little content, according to the motto,
00:14   “Everything will be fine; we just have to firmly believe in it.”
00:17   The state of the European economy cannot be glossed over
00:20   by simply painting the future in bright green colors.
00:24   To exacerbate the current problems of European industry
00:27   with even more stringent climate targets
00:30   will cost thousands of jobs, and those for many years.
00:33   Ursula von der Leyen could also have spoken out about that.
00:37   Even on the subject of uncontrolled immigration, there were only familiar sound bites.
00:41   Fight against human smugglers, rapid repatriation of rejected asylum seekers.
00:45   We have been talking about this for years, with no tangible result.
00:49   What good are renewed “moral” appeals to the member states
00:52   from Brussels and Berlin? Even if Angela Merkel clearly sees this as critical.
00:57   Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is right,
01:00   when he, on the current issue of taking in refugees,
01:03   refers to the efforts of his country,
01:06   and according to the will of its own people.
01:09   In this, he by no means stands alone in Europe.
01:12   Christian charity and moral integrity are important,
01:16   but they cannot replace a functional asylum law.
01:19   Europe must finally manage to build a clear asylum system
01:23   and fight abuse of it rigorously.
01:26   Ultimately, that means that Europe can NOT accommodate everyone
01:31   who wants to come for economic reasons.

    • A very miniscule percentage to be sure.

The german jews herded into the gas chambers and the german voter of today aren’t really all that different. Without meaning disrespect to the jews put to death by an evil regime, both groups remained/remain in denial until the moment the consequences of their refusal to see what they wished to ignore were already upon them and it was too late to do anything about it.
