A Nice Culture-Enricher Gets Himself in Trouble

A Tunisian immigrant — an alumnus of the holding pen on Lampedusa — has gotten himself into a spot of bother in the French city of Nice. It seems the high-spirited “youth” forced his unwanted attentions upon a young English woman in the wee hours of last Wednesday morning.

One line in the following news story made me guffaw: “The individual was arrested while he was in the process of breaking the glass of a parked vehicle with a rock.”

How fortunate the French are to live in such a vibrant, diverse, colorful society!

Many thanks to Gary Fouse for translating this article from Le Figaro:

The individual, recently arrived from the Italian island of Lampedusa, was charged and placed in pre-trial custody.

A Tunisian, born in 1996, without fixed abode and with an illegal status, was charged with rape and placed in pre-trial custody on Friday, 13 May, Le Figaro learned from the prosecutor’s office in Nice. A judicial investigation has been opened.

The events, reported by Nice-Matin, occurred Wednesday, 11 May shortly after 5am in the Port neighborhood. A woman of English nationality, who was leaving Garibaldi Square, was followed by a man. The rape took place in an adjacent street.

According to our colleagues, The Center of Urban Supervision of the Nice municipal police, were able to retrace the steps of the victim and her attacker up to the point of the rape, captured by city cameras. Officers of the CSU found the presumed attacker an hour later in the same quarter. The individual was arrested while he was in the process of breaking the glass of a parked vehicle with a rock.

According to our information, the suspect had recently arrived from the Italian island of Lampedusa and was under the influence of drugs at the time of the rape of which he is accused.
