Al-Nusra Leader Swears Allegiance to Caliph Al-Baghdadi

The Al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State are the two most powerful jihad groups in Syria. Until recently they were rivals, and sometimes fought against each other.

On November the 13th 2014, the two groups declared themselves in operational alliance. They promised to stop fighting each other, and said they would coordinate their attacks in some areas of northern Syria, in alliance against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Their cooperation fell short of unifying the rival groups, and experts on the conflict in the Middle East expected that the alliance would in all likelihood soon fall apart.

However, the opposite seems to be the case. In the following video you’ll hear Abu Ali al-Shishani (“The Chechen”), a leader of the Al-Nusra Front, declare his allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Caliph of the Islamic State.

The context for the clip is that Mr. al-Shishani is threatening Lebanon and the Shiites for the arrest of his wife and children. In the original news stories about the arrest published early this month, the Muslima in question was said to be the wife of al-Baghdadi. But Abu Ali al-Shishani says that the woman being held in detention is in fact his wife.

02:01   I hold the Sunnis and the Sunnis religious authorities in Tripoli responsible if she is not released at once.
02:33   I hold responsible all Sunni Muslims in Lebanon for all the innocent people in prisons there.
02:48   You are responsible,
02:55   and may not the word of Allah, most high, apply to you which says:

03:16   Oh you Sunnis, Rise up under one man! Our men and women and children are in prisons in Lebanon.
03:21   My wife and kids were unjustly apprehended!
03:35   My kids were just going to school in Tripoli.
03:40   My wife is like all other women! She is innocent of any crime.
03:48   Why should she suffer because of her husband?
03:54   Woe unto you!
03:57   (Quoting Ibn Taimiyyah, a 13th century Muslim scholar and the go-to scholar for Salafists): “God will raise up a just government even if it is infidel, but will not raise up an unjust government even if it is Muslim.”
04:16   Woe unto you until all our women are released from the prisons!
04:22   Woe unto you and your army, you worshipers of [Ayatollah Ruhollah] Khomeini!
04:28   Woe unto you and your rulers who order you to be humiliated as spies!
04:40   Woe unto you who have become the minions of Ravafez! (pejorative word for Shiite Muslims)
04:44   Woe unto you, you minions of Iran! Woe unto you, worshipers of Khomeini!
04:47   They were just a woman and two kids!
04:53   The first kid’s age is no more than four and the second kid was only six months.
05:06   They are in prisons! The kids and a weak woman!
05:13   Shame unto you and your army!…
05:17   It is said in an Hadith that the prophet said: “All nations will come against you”
05:32   Because of our Jihad and because of Muhammad our prophet PBUH!
05:39   All the nations of Kuffar will unite against us because they want to destroy this banner!
05:52   May Allah be witness that we will raise this banner everywhere!
06:09   My second message is to the effeminate army of Ravafez, I don’t consider to be the army of Lebanon,
06:20   whose commander is Hizb al Shaytan (literally “The Party of Satan”, a pun on “Hizbollah”, “The Party of Allah”)
06:24   whose commanders consist of Ravafez and spies, this is my message to you:
06:32   If my wife is not released soon, do not dream! All the non-Rafezi (Shiite) soldiers will leave your army!
06:44   Don’t you dare to dream! All Muslims will rise up!
06:49   This affair has nothing to do with my brothers in the Islamic State and the Al Nusra front,
07:00   but it is his personal matter and is between me and those who have put my wife and kids in prison.
07:18   They are kids, oh Muslims! Just kids! And a weak woman who is taken away and put in the prison of Kuffar!
07:33   If my wife and children are not released at once (repeated three times)
08:00   I consider the wives and children of the Rafezi pigs (i.e. Shiites) and the wives and children of all Lebanese army personnel
08:08   to be legitimate targets and with Allah’s help we will capture the women and children of the “effeminate army”.
08:21   These soldiers are not men; they are unmanly, because otherwise they would not have messed with innocent women and children.
08:46   This is my message to the Lebanese, soon I and my army will be on the move
09:03   because Allah, most high, has said that “what ever they do to you, you retaliate to them in kind!”, and that is exactly what I intend to do!
09:19   If my wife and kids are not release I will capture the wives and kids of the Ravafez and Lebanese soldiers!
09:36   That I will not have mercy on their families until my own wife and kids and the women and children of the “believers” are all released from the prisons of the Kuffar.
10:05   But my third message: I say to my brothers in Al Nusra front and IS, Allah be your protector!
10:19   The news that said this woman was the wife of our commander Baghdadi is not true. I am her husband!
10:28   And I am your soldier! May Allah protect our commander Baghdadi!
10:34   May Allah give him happiness and bless his life and also to all the soldiers who came to raise the banner of “There is no god but Allah”!
10:47   I tell them: Enough with disunity!
10:54   My wife and kids are in prison!
10:59   and before them there were many women and kids of the Muslims imprisoned!
11:06   This is the fight that Hizb al Shaytan (Hizbollah) has invented!
11:27   This is a disgrace for Lebanon!
11:31   This is my call to my brothers in Al Nusra front and the Islamic State: I invite your attention to the problem of Lebanon!

    Steady now! He is not “painting a whole community with a broad brush for the actions of a few”, is he? That is most Islamophobic.

  3. His concern for the weak, elderly men, women, children, and the lesser ones is touching. I can’t upload the picture of the little girl who was beheaded. I suspect the death of that innocent wasn’t a big deal to him but, now that the innocents kidnapped are his own, what happens to innocent people is a very big deal indeed.

  4. Isn’t Al-Shishani actually a Georgian, providing some much-needed “cultural enrichment” to that Orthodox-filled country from the Pankisi Gorge?
