Joran van der Sloot is Coming to the USA

Readers who have been around long enough will remember the case of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old American girl who disappeared in May of 2005 on the Caribbean island of Aruba after a days-long binge of drinking and drugging. Her remains have never been found.

Resorting to Wikipedia to refresh my memory on the case, I was reminded of the seedy role played by Joran van der Sloot, the young Dutchman who figured prominently in the events leading up to Ms. Holloway’s disappearance. I don’t know whether Mr. Van der Sloot had anything to do with the young lady’s fate, but he is definitely a piece of work — he defrauded her family by claiming the reward for information concerning her whereabouts, saying that he knew where the body was buried, when he in fact provided no information that would lead to her remains.

In an unrelated case in 2010 he was convicted of murdering a woman in Peru, and is currently serving a 28-year sentence in a Peruvian prison. Now the state of Alabama and Peru have come to an agreement that will allow Joran van der Sloot to be extradited to Alabama to stand trial for fraud and extortion of the Holloway family.

Many thanks to Gary Fouse for translating this article from De Dagelijkse Standaard:

Transfer of Joran van der Sloot to US delayed due to airline refusal

The much-discussed transfer of the notorious Dutch criminal Joran van der Sloot to the US has been delayed. The airline responsible for his transport has refused to take him on board. As a result of this, Van der Sloot now has to make the trip between Tacna and Lima in Peru in a police car, which means a ride of more than ten hours in a heavily-guarded convoy.

Eventually, he will be brought to the Piedras Gordas prison in Lima, where he will remain before he is flown to the American state of Alabama. In Alabama, he will stand trial for the extortion and defrauding of the parents of Natalee Holloway, who disappeared without a trace in 2005.

After days-long back-and-forth between Peru and the public prosecutor in Alabama, it has been agreed that Van der Sloot will be flown to the US in two to three days. The Peruvian judiciary wanted more guarantees that Van der Sloot, after his trial in the US, would be sent back to Peru to complete the remainder of his sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores and drug dealing. The US has promised to comply with this condition.

Van der Sloot still has to remain behind bars in Peru until 2045 before he could return to Alabama to serve his sentence for defrauding the Holloway family. In May 2010, van der Sloot claimed the reward the Holloway family had offered for tips relating to the disappearance of Natalee in 2005, which resulted in a fraud case. He claimed to know where the body lay buried and received an advance of 25,000 dollars. It later turned out that he had fabricated the location.

The relatives of Natalee Holloway have always insisted that Joran van der Sloot be tried in Alabama. Now with the transfer to the US taking place, they can finally expect justice.

  1. Perhaps it can be arranged for that filth to be shanked while in US custody.

Natalee Holloway seemed like a typical brainless blonde American female from a privileged rich family but spoiled rich kids from foreign families shouldn’t be killing them either. One shouldn’t allow foreigners to do this kind of thing regardless of how stupid the victim was. The arrogance of this worm is also beyond unbelievable. I find it shocking that the Chilean prisoners haven’t put an end to him yet for killing one of their women.

  2. First he should be forced to talk.

And then turn him over to the family so that they can have their pound of flesh.
