Port Canaveral: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Back during the Bush administration there was a controversy over a proposal to contract with a company in Dubai to manage American ports. That deal was eventually killed, but the idea didn’t die — it was kept alive by the President Barack Hussein Obama, who has an even greater fondness for doing business with firms in the Muslim Middle East than George W. Bush did.

In 2015 the Obama administration awarded a contract for the management of Port Canaveral to a company called Gulftainer in the UAE. The Center for Security Policy has published a paper with details on this unsavory deal. The nexus of businesses and public officials connected with Gulftainer deal even spans the Sunni-Shi’ite divide.

Below is a press release about the paper that was sent out today by CSP.

Center Occasional Paper Exposes Nightmare Scenario:
Ominous Ties Raise Alarms About Foreign Entity’s Lease At U.S. Port

(Washington, DC): A new Center for Security Policy Occasional Paper authored by two intrepid and indefatigable researchers, Alan Jones and Mary Fanning, has brought to light a shocking fact: The family of Iraqi nuclear physicist Dr. Jafar Dhia Jafar, considered to be “the father of Iraq’s nuclear weapons program,” has been awarded a 35-year lease for cargo container operations at Port Canaveral, Florida.

According to Mr. Jones and Ms. Fanning’s paper, entitled “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” Secret Deal Allows Company Tied to Saddam’s Nuclear Bombmaker, Iran and U.A.E. to Manage Key Florida Port Facilities, Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew unilaterally approved the lease for Gulftainer — a Middle Eastern ports company owned by the Emir of Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iraqi businessman Hamid Dhia Jafar — following two years of secret talks.

It is deeply concerning that Lew and the Obama administration decided to forego any national security threat analysis by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) which certainly seems in order given the nature and implications of this deal. After all, a similarly fraught arrangement — a contract for Dubai Ports World to manage a number of U.S. ports a decade ago — was submitted for CFIUS approval, and ultimately aborted.

In addition to being an important seaport in its own right, Port Canaveral is in close proximity to a number of key U.S. facilities — including the Navy’s East Coast ballistic missile submarine base, two U.S. Air Force Space Command bases and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

As the paper’s authors dug into the details surrounding this deal, they discovered — in addition to Gulftainer’s obvious and still potentially problematic ties to the UAE — a troubling array of connections linking it to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, and President Barack Obama, himself. For example, Obama’s former college roommates, one Indian and one Pakistani — who remain to this day his close friends — have personal and business relationships with the Jafar family.

Then, there are ominous connections to Iran, as well. Siamak Namazi is a former Iranian government official who, along with Trita Parsi, helped found the National Iranian American Council (NIAC). NIAC is considered to be the U.S. lobbying arm of the Tehran regime. Namazi, Parsi, and NIAC were all deeply involved in the negotiations that led to the “Obamabomb Deal”: the July 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran.

As the secret Gulftainer negotiations were underway from 2012-2014, Namazi served as the head of strategic planning for Crescent Petroleum. The company is another Jafar family business based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Crescent is closely involved in oil and gas projects with Teheran’s state-owned petroleum concern, the National Iranian Oil Company. Interestingly, Siamak Namazi was detained inside Iran around mid-October 2015 and remains in custody there as of December 2016. Among other things, that puts him conveniently beyond the reach of the FBI.

In unveiling the Center’s new Occasional Paper, its president, Frank J. Gaffney, observed:

It is shocking that management of one of the United States’ most strategically located ports has been turned over to foreign interests that include: Saddam Hussein’s nuclear bomb-maker; the rabidly anti-American jihadist mullahs of Iran; and a country, the UAE, that was stopped from taking over operational control of American ports ten years ago.

Worse yet, all this was engineered without the knowledge, much less the approval, of either Congress or the American people.

This transaction must be suspended, if not canceled outright, pending a thorough evaluation of its merits, a rigorous national security threat assessment by CFIUS and most importantly, an informed and thorough debate on Capitol Hill.

  1. I believe you will find that this kind of thing is occurring throughout the West. I know Port Botany in Sydney is run by an Arab consortium. A little like giving your house keys to an axe murderer and hoping that he goes elsewhere.

    • Nemesis,

Could you please provide more detail on this?

GoV readers are not likely to be aware that Port Botany is THE port facility of Australia’s largest city.

      • Go to: The Conversation – Are we Selling off the Family Silver by privatising Australia’s Ports?

That report is from 2013. I have nothing more recent you can go to.

The Consortium that runs Port Botany and Port Kembla are Australian Super Funds and an Arab government concern based in Abu Dhabi. While this report does not hint at how this consortium functions we can be assured of one thing, the Arabs will eventually be running it all, by hook or by crook.

One must also take into account that Customs only ever checks one in ten containers, the other non-searched containers being allowed through without inspection.

You could troll the Telegraph site which has an article about gun running the gauntlet at Port Botany, or similar title, although I fail to see how one inspection in ten can be termed any kind of gauntlet.

  2. Not sure that this is the exact news article that should elicit this response, but nonetheless:

The globalists have absolutely no concern for national sovereignty or identity. None. This globalist agenda started gaining momentum with GHWB. The following is a quote from GHWB’s speech before a joint session of Congress, September 11, 1990. The speech is officially known as the “Address on the Invasion of Kuwait”. It is also referred to as the “New World Order Speech”. Here is a quote from the last paragraph of that speech:

“Once again Americans have stepped forward to share a tearful goodbye with their families before leaving for a strange and distant shore. At this very moment they serve together with Arabs, Europeans, Asians and Africans in defense of principle and the dream of a new world order and that’s why they sweat and toil in the sand . . . . . .”

From the above, ‘. . . they serve together with (other militaries from foreign nations) in defense of principle and the DREAM OF A NEW WORLD ORDER . . .”

Not quite accurate GHWB. And, you knew it then and you know it now. I know from being a part of the military at that time, that no one in the military who deployed for (or supported) DS/DS had in their heart and minds any thought for a NWO. We, quite simply saw the act of Saddam Hussein as one that need to be addressed. That is all.

But from there, the cancer has spread – through Billy Bob Clinton, to that oh so erudite GWB, and now the Indonesian in Residence.

How can any nation screw itself any more thoroughly or royally?

    • Nukes have been miniaturized since the days of Fat Man and Little Boy. On the other hand, one could smuggle in many, many colonists through a port which one controls.

      • And even a so called dirty bomb would be dangerous enough.

It`s just absurd, to let this people gain a foothold in the US or else were in the West or the Nonmuslim world.

  3. Ports are a nation’s strategic asset, the lifeline of an export/import economy. A wise nation would never allow a foreign owner to control such an asset. And then there is the security risk. All those shipping containers are a tempting alternative to air transportation, which as been the Terrorist’s mainstay to date.

    • Given the way you opened your comment, I need to know what the acronym “YT” stands for (not YouTube in this instance) before I approve it.

  4. A tiny part of a much bigger picture. I remember that we covered this disturbing subject in the past but I don’t remember the details…does anyone recall SmartPort? On this large continent, you don’t need to be near the ocean to be in this lucrative business…

We’ll be looking to Donald Trump to do something here… here, there, and everywhere. IIRC, China owns both ends of the Panama Canal, and much of the west coast port facilities. Plus lots of infrastructure in Mexico…

This is a subject that needs a great deal of research. Just a few minutes on NOT-Google and a number of countries popped up. China and Mexico are BFF. Like most relationships, It’s Complicated:

    http://americanfreepress.net/html/massive_port_grab.html

American Free Press has confirmed that the huge Chinese shipping conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. has a significant presence at the Lazaro Cardenas seaport in Mexico, as well as other Mexican ports. The company has had effective control of both ends of the Panama Canal for the last seven years.

The Mexican ports link to the budding Trans Texas Corridor (TTC) toll road network by way of railroad cargo lines that head from the ports across Mexico to the United States border, providing a conduit to bypass U.S. West Coast seaports and haul ever-more massive quantities of imports into the United States.

According to Hutchison Whampoa’s own web site, this shipping conglomerate has a single-berth terminal situated in the highly industrial, deep-water Lazaro Cardenas port and plans a second phase there, which “includes the development of an 85-hectare deep-water, green field site with 1,350 meters of berth.”

Hutchison Whampoa, which controls 12% of all container port capacity in the world and employs 200,000 people, has long been alleged to be either an arm of the Chinese military or beholden to the communist regime—which considers the United States an adversary. This situation has troubled prominent Americans, such as the now deceased Adm. Thomas H Moorer, a former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman who pointed out some years ago that Hutchison Whampoa already controls the Atlantic and Pacific seaports of the Panama Canal—that century-old American-made commercial waterway connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific that has a military function and is arguably one of the most strategic chokepoints on the globe.

So who owns what in France, the Netherlands, or Britain? Well, that last is indubitably Dubai or some other M.E. dictatorship, but what about the others? And China is bizzy bizzy in No Africa, in the sub-Sahara, etc.

With the bureaucrats in D.C. since at least the 1970s, we’re being sold off piecemeal. And so is Europe. Teach your children Chinese.

  5. You will remember the UAE tried to take six U.S. ports in the Dubai Ports World Deal…Bill Clinton was their advisor on that deal. The DPW deal did receive CIFIUS review. In this case the Gulftainer deal received no such review.

Of interest is that the Jafars through GEMS raised $70 BILLION in promissory donations. They also paid Bill Clinton millions for a speech and millions more for being the honorary chair to their foundation.

That one of the Jafars was Saddam Hussein’s rogue nuclear mastermind is an outrage. That Dr. Jafar wanted to build the Arab Bomb sounds like a threat.

That Obama’s college roommates were involved stinks to high cronyism or is that high espionage. That they were the same guys that disappeared on that “mysterious” trip to Pakistan that Obama kept hidden is beyond suspicious.

That Hillary was moving government grant money to one of the college roommates who was connected to the Jafars reeks.

That the Jafars tried to become silent partners at Kings Bay Port Javksonville for a $250 million dollar payoff is illegal and should have barred these people from ever having any US lease at all!!!

That they lied about the Emir of the UAE owning part of GULFTAINER, thus foreign government ownership, would have precluded them having any lease next to “critical infrastructure.”

Pull back this lease now. You cannot LIE and submit fraudulent documents to end run the laws in the US…particularly when you do so to keep ownership and review of your other businesses SECRET!!!

Gov SCOTT…SEND IN THE NATIONAL GUARD NOW!!!!! Too damn much is at stake.

  6. Thank God the Clintons aren’t in the WH, pay to play was nothing according to the left, ha….we are all fools…
