Matteo Salvini on Richard Gere and the Latest Migrant-Ferry Vessel

As promised yesterday, here’s a video in which Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini talks about the latest migrant-ferry vessel that is trying to run the blockade at the island of Lampedusa. The celebrity Richard Gere happens to be aboard that boat.

In other remarks not recorded in this video, Mr. Salvini said, “[Richard Gere] can take back to Hollywood, on his private plane, all the people aboard and support them in his villas.”

Many thanks to FouseSquawk for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Video transcript:

00:00   Speaking of immigrants — have you seen that Richard Gere is on board… —I saw what?
00:04   Richard Gere is on board Open Arms. —No, I missed it. Let’s hope he gets a tan,
00:08   that he is fine. All in all, I don’t think he lacks for anything…so Bon Voyage.
00:14   No, but… we have advised the Spanish government, since it is a Spanish NGO
00:18   that flies the Spanish flag, there are so many Spanish mayors ready to receive a Spanish NGO [vessel],
00:22   to set course to a Spanish port because they have been stopped for eight days
00:26   30 (nautical) miles from Lampedusa. In eight days, they could have gone
00:30   back and forth to Ibiza or Formentera three times.
00:34   Therefore I maintain that these 120 immigrants
00:38   all have the right to disembark at Ibiza or Formentera.
00:41   What do you think of the restitution… Mattarella… [Unintelligible] (the) fine?
00:47   I will read it. The president maintains that a million-euro fine may be too much,
00:51   even though I look at some of the budgets of these NGOs, who have millions and millions of euros
00:55   in their accounts. And then it is a fine for those who break the law, but I will read it carefully.

  1. This is something that I have never understood about the do-gooders: why don’t they support these people through legal channels. Gere has enough money to sponsor people; why doesn’t he? He could also get his fellow perverts who have too much money on their hands to chip in. Why does he want to these people to partake in a kind of amazing race across oceans and deserts?

    • I always found Mr Gere’s gerbil troubles to be amusing if a little unfair, and cut him a lot of slack over what he endured by the innuendos to his reputation. I enjoyed Officer and a Gentleman, and such a movie could never be made today due to it’s many subversive messages.

It is therefore disappointing to see that he is every bit as much a moron as the rest of his fellow actors, and I can only suppose that either he truly is a moron and believes what he says, or he is a virtue signaler who has no trouble with the human misery that would be caused should the cause he agitates for be achieved in large numbers. It is always easy to be generous with other people’s money and consequences to their lives, especially if one can do so from within the safety of their gated, secured compound.

  2. “I have never understood about the do-gooders: why don’t they support these people through legal channels”

Think of Tom Sawyer and his conniving his friends to do work (=suffer the consequences of having wall-to-wall Muslims) and getting them to pay to do the work to boot (=taxation).
