Americans Are Increasingly Negative About China

Data by Gallup shows that Americans’ views of China have continued to worsen after 2018.

The deterioration started with the U.S.-China trade war under President Donald Trump, continued during the coronavirus pandemic that originated in China and has recently taken on yet another dimension among concerns about widespread Chinese tech and industrial espionage and subversion as well as continued human rights abuses and tension surrounding Taiwan.

As Statista’s Katharina Buchholz details below, among American adults in 2024, unfavorable views of China were voiced by 77 percent of respondents after having reached a high of 84 percent in early 2023. In 2005, that figure had stood at just 47 percent.

Annual Massachusetts Outmigration Hits 39,000, Up 1,100% Over the Last Decade: BU Study

BOSTON (April 24, 2024) — Annual net outmigration from Massachusetts has soared by a stunning 1,100 percent to 39,000 people since 2013, according to a new Boston University Questrom School of Business study. If the trend continues, the researchers found, the state’s net outmigration could reach 96,000 by 2030.

Outmigration cost Massachusetts $4.3 billion in adjusted gross income (AGI) and $213.7 million in tax revenue during the 2020-21 tax year. The majority of that money went to Florida ($1.77 billion), New Hampshire ($1.1 billion), and Maine ($393 million.) Those numbers could rise to $19.2 billion in AGI and $961 million in lost tax revenue by 2030.

College Protesters Seek Amnesty to Keep Arrests and Suspensions From Trailing Them

Maryam Alwan figured the worst was over after New York City police in riot gear arrested her and other protesters on the Columbia University campus, loaded them onto buses and held them in custody for hours.

But the next evening, the college junior received an email from the university.

Alwan and other students were being suspended after their arrests at the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” a tactic colleges across the country have deployed to calm growing campus protests against the Israel-Hamas war.

The students’ plight has become a central part of protests, with students and a growing number of faculty demanding their amnesty. At issue is whether universities and law enforcement will clear the charges and withhold other consequences, or whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives.

COVID Shutdowns, Isolation to Blame for Pro-Palestine Protests, Experts Say

Blame it on Covid.

The pro-Palestinian cause allows discontented youth to express “long-withheld rage,” said forensic psychiatrist Carole Lieberman. It gives them an “opportunity to identify with the ‘oppressed’ against ‘oppressors.’“

Fetterman Not Bothered by GOP Support as He Swipes at Anti-Israel Students and Their ‘Pup Tent for Hamas’ Protests

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman said Sunday he’s fine with the praise he’s gotten from conservatives — as he took another swipe at the “pup-tent for Hamas’’ protests of anti-Israel US college students.

The pro-Israel pol from Pennsylvania, who earned a reputation for hewing far to the left before landing in the Senate, has drawn some acclaim from the right for his staunch defense of the Jewish state and occasional pushback against progressives — all of which has helped him woo Republican donors.

Justice Kavanaugh Warns of Vicious Cycle of Malicious Prosecutions That Could End Presidency

Authored by Tom Ozimek via The Epoch Times

During Thursday’s deliberations at the U.S. Supreme Court on former President Donald Trump’s immunity claim, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh warned that a decision in the case has future implications for whether future presidents are shielded from vicious cycles of malicious prosecution that could effectively end the presidency as we know it.

In the course of two-and-a-half hours of oral arguments on April 25, justices on the Supreme Court appeared skeptical of a ruling by a federal appeals court that rejected President Trump’s claim that he has absolute immunity from criminal charges based on his official acts as president.

President Trump was indicted by special counsel Jack Smith in August 2023 on charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Pleading not guilty, the former president has argued that he should receive absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for acts that fell within the scope of his official duties. The exception to this immunity, he has argued, is if Congress impeaches and convicts him on charges.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Slams DEI Standards as ‘Fascist Totalitarianism’

David Mamet, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, did not hold back when expressing his disdain for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) standards that now restrict him and others in his profession.

Mamet’s blistering critique of DEI standards and the Academy’s inclusion criteria is part of the ongoing debate surrounding the role of diversity and representation in Hollywood, with his comments likely to spark further discussion and controversy within the industry.

Mamet delivered the scathing critique of the current state of the entertainment industry while promoting his memoir “Everywhere an Oink, Oink,” at the University of Southern California’s Festival of Books, during an interview with Los Angeles Times deputy entertainment editor Matt Brennan.

“DEI is garbage. It’s fascist totalitarianism,” Mamet declared, mincing no words in his assessment. Watch: Arizona State Fraternity Students Tear Down Pro-Palestine Encampment and Boot Out Activists

After years of leftist activists disrupting the speech of groups and individuals they disagree with and threatening people with “cancellation” for having the “wrong” opinions, it’s hard to find sympathy for them when they finally get a taste of their own medicine. Woke protesters have recently sought to bring back the old Seattle CHAZ model of taking over public property and declaring it their own territory; in this case the territory is college campuses around the US.

The problem of western progressives hijacking causes in order to insert their own agendas has been noted by many in the independent media. While some people may be approaching the Gaza protests in good faith, there are many others who are not.

Apologists might argue that the goal of a protest is to “disrupt” but there are still laws in place that activists must follow. These include laws that make it illegal to obstruct other citizens from using public property, public roads and public buildings (the insane actions of anti-oil protesters come to mind). Regardless of how you might feel about the Israel/Hamas conflict, the reality is that it has nothing to do with students trying to go to classes at universities across the country, and stopping them from doing so violates their rights.

This is something that the Gaza protesters seem to have forgotten; their cause is not the only important matter at hand. If they are merely speaking their minds and engaging in fair discourse then they have every right. Once they start taking over colleges and acting as if they own the place, then there’s going to be a problem. It has also been reported that more than half of these activists are not even members of the colleges in question.

Government of Alberta to Table Report on COVID Data Next Month

The Government of Alberta is expected to table a review of pandemic-era health data next month after condemning “freedom-busting” mandates for nearly two years.

Led by Dr. Gary Davidson, a Red Deer physician who accused the province of exaggerating the impact of COVID-19 on hospitals, Alberta secretly organized a task force to offer recommendations on better managing future pandemics.

It was quietly established in late 2022, with few details released to the public since its inception.

The former chief of emergency medicine at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre claimed hospital admission numbers were overblown and further manipulated to justify public health restrictions during the fourth wave.

Alberta Health Services rejected those accusations as false.

Nevertheless, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith valued Davidson’s “contrarian perspective.”

Newspaper Chain Lobbying for Media Bailouts Reports $6 Million in Operating Losses Last Year

The architect behind the Liberal media slush fund lost more than $6 million in operating expenses last year, new records show.

FP Newspapers Inc., the publisher for the Winnipeg Free Press, Brandon Sun and other Manitoba publications, received $989,000 in payroll rebates in 2023, reported Blacklock’s Reporter.

“We will have to save ourselves,” then-publisher Bob Cox, chair of News Media Canada, testified at 2019 hearings of the Commons finance committee. “All of us are engaged in transforming our business models so we can continue to fulfill the key role that a free press must play in a healthy democracy.”

However, FP Newspapers reported a $6,258,000 operating loss last year as print advertising revenue plummeted 15% from $24,147,000 to $20,630,000. Circulation revenue fell 3%.

EU Policy. Can Social Media Swing the EU Election?

Compared to the 2019 election more EU platform rules are in place.

This June, some 365 million people will be eligible to vote in the EU Elections, including many young voters for whom social media is a vital resource for campaigning. Four countries — Belgium, Germany, Malta and Austria — will allow 16-year-olds to vote, in Greece the minimum age to vote is 17.

Five years ago, when the last EU vote was held, the regulatory landscape for online platforms was quite different: there were fewer rules on combating misinformation, and the AI Act did not yet exist. We take a look at how platform regulation in the EU has changed in 2024, compared to the last election in 2019, and its impact on social media companies.

How Skeptical Are Europeans About Vaccinations?

31 percent of people surveyed in Poland as part of Statista’s Consumer Insights survey say they have little confidence in the safety of vaccinations.

The low influenza vaccination rate among older individuals in Poland points to the potential practical consequences of such attitudes — although the data does not conclusively demonstrate a causal relationship.

As Statista’s Anna Fleck shows in the following chart, there is a lack of trust in the safety of immunizations across several countries in Europe.

Caroline Glick: Now is the Time for Choosing

On Wednesday, hikers around the southern Israeli city of Arad discovered the remains of an Iranian ballistic missile from the April 13 overnight assault. Israel’s Channel 11 identified it as a Khader-1 missile. The Khader-1, like the Imad missiles, which Iran also used in its strike, are nuclear capable.

The fact that Iran used two ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads should sound every alarm bell. In an interview with Deutsche Welle on Tuesday, International Atomic Energy Agency chairman Rafael Grossi said that Iran is “weeks rather than months” away from having enough enriched uranium to develop a nuclear bomb.

Israel’s war is not a war of choice. It isn’t a conflict that Israel can shrug its shoulders and walk away from, or opt for a limited goal of blocking incoming strikes. This is a war for national survival. Hamas made clear the genocide it aims to achieve on Oct. 7. Its appalling cruelty to the hostages it has held captive for more than six months demonstrates still further that there is no way to fight to a draw with this jihadist terror regime. There is no “deal” to be had with Hamas leaders. The same is true of Hezbollah-controlled Lebanon. And, of course, the same is true of Iran.

Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and their terror partners have used all the resources at their disposal to expand their capacity to annihilate Israel. They have not done this to jockey for stronger negotiating positions. They are putting everything they have into building these capacities because they really want to destroy Israel and kill the Jews. The calls for Israel’s destruction are not mere slogans. They are solid commitments.

The good news is that Israel has the military and economic power to defeat its enemies completely. The bad news is that in their efforts, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and their other partners are not fighting alone. While the United States and other Western nations are willing to speak out against Hamas and Iran from time to time, they completely oppose Israel’s effort to defeat its enemies. Israel is permitted to defend against incoming attacks. But it is prohibited from taking decisive offensive action…

Hamas Delegation Due in Cairo on Monday for Gaza Ceasefire Talks

CAIRO, April 28 (Reuters) — A Hamas delegation will visit Cairo on Monday for talks aimed at securing a ceasefire, a Hamas official told Reuters on Sunday, as mediators stepped up efforts to reach a deal ahead of an expected Israeli assault on the southern city of Rafah.

The official, who asked not to be named, said the delegation will discuss a ceasefire proposal handed by Hamas to mediators from Qatar and Egypt, as well as Israel’s response.

He did not disclose details of the latest proposals.

Another senior Hamas official told Reuters the delegation will fly to Cairo from Qatari capital Doha, adding it will be led by Khalil Al-Hayya, deputy to Hamas’ Gaza chief.

The talks will take place between the Hamas delegation and the Qatari and the Egyptian mediators to discuss remarks the group has made over the Israeli response to its recent proposal.

Hamas Has ‘No Major Issue’ With Israel’s Gaza Truce Counter-Proposal

A senior Hamas official told AFP on Sunday that the Palestinian militant group had “no major issues” with the latest proposal from Israel and Egypt for a Gaza ceasefire.

“The atmosphere is positive unless there are new Israeli obstacles. There are no major issues in the observations and inquiries submitted by Hamas regarding the contents” of the proposal, said a Hamas official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Hamas delegation led by the movement’s senior leader, Khalil al-Hayya, would deliver the group’s response to the truce proposal during a meeting with Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo on Monday, the official said.

Hamas has previously insisted on a permanent ceasefire — a condition that Israel has rejected.

However the Axios news website, citing two Israeli officials, reported that Israel’s latest proposal includes a willingness to discuss the “restoration of sustainable calm” in Gaza after hostages are released.

Russian Drone Strikes Set Hotel Ablaze in Ukrainian Black Sea City

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian drones early Sunday struck the Black Sea city of Mykolaiv, setting a hotel ablaze and damaging energy infrastructure, the local Ukrainian governor reported, while ammunition shortages continued to hobble Kyiv’s troops in the more than 2-year-old war.

Vitaliy Kim, the governor of Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv province, said that Russian drones “seriously damaged” a hotel in its namesake capital, sparking a fire that was later extinguished. Kim also reported that the strike damaged heat-generating infrastructure in the city, but gave no details. He added that there were no casualties.

Russian state agency RIA carried claims that the strike on Mykolaiv targeted a shipyard where naval drones are assembled, as well as a hotel housing “English-speaking mercenaries” who have fought for Kyiv. The RIA report cited Sergei Lebedev, described as a coordinator of local pro-Moscow guerrillas. His claim could not be independently verified.

Ukraine’s Army Chief Reports Tactical Retreat in the East, and Warns of Front-Line Pressure

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s troops have been forced to make a tactical retreat from three villages in the embattled east, the country’s army chief said Sunday, warning of a worsening battlefield situation as Ukrainian forces wait for much-needed arms from a huge U.S. aid package to reach combat zones.

Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Russian forces continue to attack “along the entire front line” of more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), with pitched battles raging west of Avdiivka, the eastern city they took in February after a grueling, monthslong fight.

“The most difficult situation is in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions, where fierce battles continue,” Syrskyi’s said in an update posted to the Telegram messaging app, referencing two Ukrainian-held cities in the war-torn Donetsk region, once a hub of industry.

“The enemy has engaged up to four brigades in these directions, is trying to develop an offensive west of Avdiivka and Marinka, making its way to Pokrovsk and Kurakhove,” Syrskyi added. “Units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, preserving the lives and health of our defenders, moved to new frontiers west of Berdychi, Semenivka and Novomykhailivka.”

Two of these front-line villages lie less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Pokrovsk, while the third is located just over 30 kilometers (19 miles) by road from Kurakhove.

‘You Have a Beautiful Daughter…’: The Persecution of Christians, March 2024

Russia: On March 22, Muslim terrorists armed with automatic weapons launched an attack on Crocus City Hall near Moscow, massacring at least 139 people and wounding more. Boasting of “killing Christians,” ISIS quickly claimed the attack in a statement that said the assault was intentionally designed to target “thousands of Christians.” Two months earlier, ISIS issued a communique to the “Lions of Islam” — presumably Muslim “avengers” around the world — to terrorize and slaughter Christians and Jews, including by targeting churches and synagogues. An excerpt follows:

“Chase your preys whether Jewish, Christian or their allies, on the streets and roads of America, Europe, and the world. Break into their homes, kill them and steal their peace of mind by any means you can lay hands on… [S]hoot them with bullets, cut their throats with sharp knives, and run them over with vehicles. A sincere person will not lack the means to draw blood from the hearts of the Jews, the Christians, and their allies, and thus ease the suffering in the hearts of the believers. Come at them from every door, kill them by the worst of means, turn their gatherings and celebrations into bloody massacres, do not distinguish between a civilian kaffir, and a military one, for they are all kuffar and the ruling against them is one… Intentionally seek easy targets before hard ones, civilian targets before military one, religious targets like synagogues and churches before others, for this will satisfy the soul.”

Victimhood is an Oppressive System of Relative Rights

We are two years and spare change away from the American semiquincentennial which will celebrate 250 years since some brave men ratified the foundational document of our nation.

The Declaration of Independence’s bold assertion that the people were “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights” is all the more relevant in the age of relativism where fewer people believe in a ‘Creator’ or in unalienable rights. That radical document is why America remains the only place on the planet where freedom of speech is absolute.

Other nations have their constitutions and human rights charters which run longer than an old-fashioned telephone directory, but their rights are granted by the government and then taken away by the government. Under the guise of buzzwords like ‘stakeholders’ and ‘evolving social contracts’ your rights are constantly reevaluated by committees according to leftist doctrine.

Unlike the absolute rights of the Bill of Rights, the reevaluation of rights follows a Marxist paradigm in which the existing state of rights is an imperfect system imposed by the privileged on the underprivileged, and must be constantly shaken up to liberate the new oppressed.

Your rights are not absolute, they are relative to how oppressed the committee thinks you are. And if you’re only as free as your oppression, then you have to be oppressed to have rights.

These rights are not a gift from the Creator, but from systemic racism, that you have rights is not something to be proud of or grateful for, but a mark of shame that indicts you for having benefited from whiteness, being adjacent to whiteness, the patriarchy, heteropatriarchy or cisheteropatriarchy, and the only way to atone is to cede your rights to the next group.

The clash between traditional feminism and the transgender movement clearly shows the difference between absolute and relative rights. In the absolute rights model, equality for women would have been a permanent victory, but in the relative rights model, by winning equal rights, women stopped being the oppressed and instead became the oppressors of transgender men.
