Banks Are Borrowing Billions to Maintain Liquidity Amid Banking Crisis, Fed Data Shows

U.S. banks are borrowing billions of dollars to maintain liquidity following the recent collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), data published by the Federal Reserve shows.

Banks have borrowed a combined total of $164.9 billion from the central bank in recent weeks amid the banking crisis, according to Fed statistics released Thursday.

During the week ending March 15, banks borrowed $152.85 billion from the central bank using the Fed’s traditional discount window.

Discount window lending provides loans for periods of up to 90 days.

That number is up from $4.58 billion the previous week.

Brits Face Biggest Tax Burden Since World War Two as Record Drop in Household Income Expected After Budget

British people are set to bear the biggest tax burden since the Second World War, with household incomes expected to plummet by record levels after the Budget announcement on Wednesday.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said that six million people would be hit by ‘stealth taxes’, like freezes for tax thresholds, over the next five years, boosting government coffers by £120 billion. The independent economic analysts said this would be the equivalent of a 4p increase in the base rate of tax.

The UK’s tax burden is on track to hit 37.7 per cent of GDP, the OBR added. Freezing income tax thresholds mean 3.2 million people will start paying in the next five years, 2.1 million will move up to the higher 40p rate, and 350,000 more will pay the 45p rate.

Meanwhile corporation tax will rise to 25% from 19%, although businesses will be able to write off investments in the UK against taxable profits under a new £9 billion-a-year scheme.

The OBR expects a record drop in household incomes of nearly 6% over a two-year period, driven by the tax hikes and inflation, which is still rising ahead of earnings, although it is set to come down markedly this year.

Credit Suisse: Populist People’s Party Refuses to Back State Guarantee for $53 Billion Bailout

Shares in Credit Suisse are tumbling after a forced merger with another Swiss bank were rejected. This comes as Switzerland’s largest political party signals it is against a state guarantee of the bailout for Credit Suisse after it received injection of liquidity from the Swiss National Bank (SNB) on Thursday with a loan of over 50 billion dollars.

Making the determination that Credit Suisse, the second-largest bank in the country and among the largest in the world, was vital to the stability of the Swiss financial system and economy, the SNB stepped in on Thursday to provide the bank with a loan worth 50 billion francs ($53.7/£44.3 billion). The move, they said, was in order to stabilise the lender amid concerns that it could be the second major bank to fail after the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank in the United States last week, the German-language Swiss paper Neue Zürcher Zeitung reported.

European Officials Accuse United States of ‘Utter Incompetence’ With Bank Bailout

European officials are reportedly outraged by U.S. government officials’ decision to take over Silicon Valley Bank that failed last week — accusing them of “incompetence.”

European financial officials say the United States violated its own rules, particularly the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. covering all deposits, despite guaranteeing individual deposits only up to $250,000, according to The Financial Times.

First Republic Bank Shares Crash to Record Low on Share-Sale Report

For a few brief hours yesterday, some market participants breathed a sigh of relief as the ‘big banks’ threw $30 billion of deposits to the ‘small banks’ (specifically First Republic Bank) and saved the world.

Today wrecked that dream as regional bank shares continued their recent and rapid demise with First Republic Bank — which had just been saved — leading the charge lower (after rallying yesterday afternoon).

Now, after the market has closed on a Friday evening (St.Patricks’ Day no less), NY Times reports that the bank — freshly stuffed with $30 billion of the big banks’ cash — is in talks to raise money from other banks or private equity firms by issuing new shares, in a desperate bid to bolster its finances.

We wish them luck in their efforts as Wedbush analyst David Chiaverini — who lowered First Republic to neutral today, warned that it’s difficult to “come up with a realistic scenario where there’s residual value for FRC common equity holders” in the event of a sale.

According to three people with knowledge of the process, the terms of the deal are unknown but a full sale of the bank is apparently possible.

First Republic Bank shares are extending losses in the after-market…

The after-hours action has pushed FRC to a record low, below its Oct 2011 lows…

Arguments Are Set to be Made in a Lawsuit That Threatens the Future of Digital Libraries

The Internet Archive, a US digital library that says it’s here to provide free universal access to knowledge while advocating a free and open internet, has been in legal trouble for years now for alleged copyright infringement.

The project — which contains millions of digital copies of books, films, videos, programs, and is also behind the web page-archiving tool the Wayback Machine — was sued four years ago by major publishers — Hachette, HarperCollins, Wiley, and Penguin Random House — who oppose the Internet Archive’s project to digitize library books by scanning and lending them.

The case, in a federal court in the US, is seen by supporters of the Internet Archive as a threat to the future of digital libraries and is about to enter the phase of oral arguments, after the filing of reply briefs.

Bill Would Ban Sale of 90% of Firearms in Washington, Gun Group Warns

The Washington Senate Law & Justice Committee is scheduled to vote next week on House Bill 1240 creating a state definition of “assault weapon,” which the Gun Owners of America, or GOA, says would apply to most firearms.

One of the reasons is due to the definition of assault weapons in the bill. Although the bill specifically lists 62 rifles by name “regardless of which company produced and manufactured the firearm,” the ban also applies to any semi-automatic rifle with a barrel length less than 30 inches. The gun barrel is the section of a firearm between the action and the muzzle.

Because of this and other firearm restrictions in the bill, GOA Regional Director Monte Bowen told The Center Square that an estimated 90% of firearms would be illegal to sell and purchase. Due to the bill’s grandfather clause, it would also be eventually illegal to own them.

Man Arrested After Reportedly Shooting at Police Helicopter in the Rolando Community

Shortly before opening fire, the 49-year-old man had called 911 and threatened to start shooting people because his car and boat had been towed away

SAN DIEGO — A 49-year-old man suspected of firing a shotgun at a police helicopter in the Rolando community was arrested Thursday afternoon, police said Friday.

The shooting happened around 3:50 p.m. on Tarragona Drive south of Carling Way.

About 30 minutes earlier, the man had called 911 and threatened to start shooting people because his vehicle and his boat had been towed without warning, San Diego police homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said in a news release. A short time later, one of the man’s neighbors also called 911 after hearing gunshots.

A San Diego police helicopter flew to the area, and the crew inside spotted the man in his yard, Campbell said. As the helicopter circled, the man reportedly grabbed a shotgun and fired in the direction of the aircraft.

The helicopter, which contained a police pilot and two tactical flight officers, was not struck, police said. The man went back inside his house and later surrendered to officers who surrounded the place.

The man was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder of the flight crew, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at an occupied aircraft and negligent discharge of a firearm.

GroenLinks and BBB were neck-on-neck in the province, but BBB came out on top with 13.2 percent of the votes. GroenLinks is the second largest party there with 12.8 percent, followed by VVD with 11.9 percent, NOS and ANP report.

The turnout stood at 57.5 percent, higher than 2019’s already high 56 percent. According to the broadcaster, the turnout for this provincial election will likely be the highest since the late 1980s.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the BBB’s massive victory “a very clear cry to politicians” and a “very clear relevant signal” from the voter. Rutte told ANP he does not yet know how to interpret this cry. He needs more time to think about it. Sixteen hours after the first results is too early for a “full-fledged analysis,” he said.

Former Advisor to Zelensky Claims Poland is Ready to Forget Volhynia

Back in November, Oleksiy Arestovych, then a close advisor of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said Poland’s authorities were prepared to view the Volhynia massacre as a closed chapter of history for the sake of good relations between Poland and Ukraine. He claimed that such assurances had been given privately by Polish officials.

In an interview with him published on Monday, Do Rzeczy asked him again about these remarks and he doubled down on his revelations. He said that officials were recognizing that the present war was an ideal opportunity to stop reliving the past and to concentrate on the future as the potential benefits from the current alliance were more important than past wrongs.

Hungary Wants a European Democracy of Equal Nations, Not an Empire Whose Democracy is Outsourced to NGOs

European conservatives can make a splash in next year’s European parliamentary elections by supporting those who share Hungary’s vision of a democracy of equal nations, and who reject the current status quo of a European Commission feeding NGOs to which it outsources democracy, Hungary’s Justice Minister Judit Varga has claimed.

Speaking at a conference in Budapest on Thursday, Varga expressed her belief in the cooperative power of democratic, sovereign nations as opposed to the empire-building ambitions of the current European Union.

Hungarian Parliament Voted Best Tourist Destination in the World

The Hungarian Parliament on the left bank of the Danube River in Budapest has been voted the world’s top tourist destination by travel blog Stasher.

Analysts from the tourism blog have ranked 99 tourist attractions to find out what is worth visiting and what is not. They gathered the most recent city and national data available, including Google ratings and TikTok popularity, and took into account the quality of accommodation and distance to the nearest international airport, as well as the public safety of the host country.

According to these factors, the blog says that the Hungarian Parliament was voted the best tourist attraction in the world, scoring 7.34 on a scale of 10. The parliament boasts an outstanding Google score of 4.8. The quality of accommodation in Budapest is also outstanding, with an average rating of 8.6 on Booking.com.

Hungary as a country also boasts a good safety rating of 1.4 out of 5, where the lower the rating, the safer the location is. Other attractions such as Disneyland in Paris and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland also made it to the top of the list.

PM Orban: ‘Europe Suffers From War Psychosis’

The main issue facing Europe today is war, which puts Hungary in a difficult situation, as the effects of war are severe and immediate, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at a meeting of the Organization of Turkic States summit in Ankara.

The prime minister stressed that, unfortunately, Europe was suffering from a “war psychosis,” with the continent drifting further into war day by day. Orban thanked the leaders of the Turkish states for strengthening the voice of peace. Hungary — on account of its population’s Asian origins — is an honorary member of the Organization of Turkic States.

Orban thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who, he said, had so far been able to mediate successfully between the warring parties, and called on him to continue his efforts in the future.

Protests Erupt in France Over Macron’s Retirement Age Push

Leaders of the influential CGT union called on people to leave schools, factories, refineries and other work places.

There have been protests in Paris against French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to force a Bill raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 through parliament without a vote.

They have disrupted traffic, rubbish collection and university campuses as opponents of the change maintain their resolve to get the government to back down.

Striking sanitation workers blocked a waste collection plant that is home to Europe’s largest incinerator to underline their determination, and university students walked out of lecture halls.

Leaders of the influential CGT union called on people to leave schools, factories, refineries and other work places.

Crowds gathered throughout the day Friday, halting cars along a Paris ring road and blocking university campuses.

Several groups, including the yellow vest activists who had mounted formidable protests against Mr Macron’s economic policies during his first term, called on the president’s opponents to march on the parliament at 6pm (5pm GMT) on Friday.

US Tourists Jailed in Italy for Killing Police Officer to Get New Trial

Two American citizens who killed an Italian police officer during a botched sting operation will stand a new trial in Rome, the country’s highest court has decided.

Finnegan Lee Elder, 23, and Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth, 22, were convicted in 2021 for the death of Carabiniere Mario Cerciello Rega while the Americans visited Rome in July 2019. They were initially sentenced to life but the terms were reduced to 24 years for Elder and 22 years for Natale-Hjorth last year.

Cerciello Rega, 35, was stabbed 11 times by Elder with a knife he had brought with him from the US while Natale-Hjorth scuffled with a second police officer. They testified in court that they acted in self-defence because they believed Cerciello Rega and his partner — who were in plainclothes — were thugs.

Elder and Natale-Hjorth had earlier tried to buy $115 worth of cocaine from a drug dealer but were instead sold crushed aspirin, according to the Associated Press. They robbed the drug dealer of a backpack and arranged to meet with him to get their money back but instead, the officers showed up.

On Wednesday, the Court of Cassation ruled the Americans must stand a new trial. The court upheld Elder’s guilty murder verdict but ordered a new trial due to some allegations that were not sufficiently proved during the previous trial, NBC reported.

Caroline Glick: Gal Luft’s Distressing Predicament

On Feb. 16, Israel Defense Forces Lt. Col. (retired) Dr. Gal Luft was arrested at the airport in Cyprus as he was about to board a flight home. Three days later, Luft posted a stunning claim on his Twitter account. He wrote: “I’ve been arrested in Cyprus on a politically motivated extradition request by the U.S. The U.S, claiming I’m an arms dealer. It would be funny if it weren’t tragic. I’ve never been an arms dealer. DOJ [Department of Justice] is trying to bury me to protect Joe, Jim and Hunter Biden. Shall I name names?”

Luft’s description of the charges was accurate. He is also accused of lying to the FBI and violating the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA). If convicted of the charges on his arrest warrant, he would face up to 96 years in prison.

Obviously, the crimes he is accused of committing are serious and require investigation. If he is guilty, he should be punished in accordance with U.S. law.

But before Luft is extradited, his allegation needs to be investigated as well.

Luft was in the IDF for 15 years and left active duty after serving as an artillery battalion commander. He moved to Washington to study at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies. He received a Ph.D. in international security under Professor Eliot Cohen.

After completing his studies, in the early 2000s, Luft formed a think tank called the Institute for Analysis of Global Security (IAGS). It focused on developing and advocating to replace oil and other fossil fuels with renewable and clean fuels. It served as a rare meeting ground for environmentalists on the left concerned with climate change and security hawks on the right concerned with U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil producers. Jim Woolsey, a former director of the CIA under Bill Clinton, and Robert McFarlane, a former national security advisor under Ronald Reagan, led the IAGS board of directors. Luft’s work with IAGS wasn’t limited to the United States. He worked in many countries.

In 2014, the China Energy Fund Committee-USA was registered as a 501(c)(3) organization in Virginia. It was the nonprofit arm of the Chinese energy conglomerate CEFC China. As a New York Times profile of CEFC China from 2018 explained, CEFC’s founder chairman, Ye Jianming made gaining “access to the corridors of power in Washington” a key goal.

CEFC-USA apparently worked as the nonprofit lobbying arm to bring senior U.S. officials into the company’s orbit. According to the write-up in the Times, it gave as much as $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation and “at least $500,000 to a Columbia University research center.” It also gave $350,000 to IAGS. According to Luft’s associates, during those years, the U.S. Department of Energy contracted CEFC-USA to carry out a project on clean coal technologies…

Scientists Create Mice Using Cells From Two Males for First Time

Very few mouse embryos developed into live mouse pups and no one knows whether it would work for humans, say experts.

Scientists have created baby mice from two males for the first time, raising the possibility of using the same technique for people.

Experts cautioned that very few mouse embryos developed into live mouse pups and no one knows whether it would work for humans.

Scientists described their work in a study published in the journal Nature.

Then, through a process that involved growing them and treating them with a drug, they converted male mouse stem cells into female cells and produced functional egg cells.

Finally, they fertilised those eggs and implanted the embryos into female mice. About 1% of the embryos — seven out of 630 — grew into live mouse pups.

The pups appeared to grow normally and were able to become parents themselves in the usual way, research leader Katsuhiko Hayashi of Kyushu University and Osaka University in Japan told fellow scientists at the Third International Summit on Human Genome Editing.

Jacinda Ardern is Tipped for Top Internet Censorship Role

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern may have recently stepped down from that office, but her “internet censorship” days don’t seem to be over at all — in fact, she is likely to “move” her experience relevant to this activity to an international role.

Having most recently made a name for herself outside her own country as one of the most ardent supporters of extremely strict Covid restrictions, Ardern was previously known as the co-sponsor of the so-called Christchurch initiative (along with another politician of a similar and particular ideological background, Emmanuel Macron.)

The initiative (“Christchurch Call”), which critics say is too heavy-handed in censoring social media, with the Christchurch shooting of 2019 taken as its justification, should now apparently be implemented worldwide, and with Macron still serving as France’s president — who better than Ardern to do it.

The former New Zealand PM has the support for this from the new head of New Zealand’s government, Chris Hipkins. The Christchurch initiative managed to get some 120 countries and Big Tech to agree on how to best deal with, and get rid of what is perceived as online misinformation, disinformation, and extremism.

Ireland’s Gay St. Patrick’s Day: A State’s Quest for Transgenderism

For Ireland’s progressive government, transgenderism and other “LGBTQ+” talking points have become central elements within modern St Patrick’s day celebrations.

“Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone. It’s with O’Leary in the grave.” So says, William Butler Yeats, one of the greatest artistic minds my country has ever produced. The line comes from a poem titled “September 1913”, a work that mourns the degradation of Ireland as the island slowly but surely became wealthier. At a time when many living on the island were finally starting to see some sense of financial prosperity, Yeats felt that they were becoming less and less like the heroic souls who came before them, and perhaps more and more like their then-fellow subjects living in Britain.
