Gates of Vienna News Feed 2/14/2023

A gunman named Anthony McRae entered the campus of Michigan State University yesterday and opened fire in two different buildings, killing three people and seriously wounding five others. He then left campus and killed himself in a different location. Mr. McRae was known to police for previous firearms offenses. He was a black man, although that fact was left out of many media reports on the incident. President Biden said that the tragedy underscored the need for stricter federal gun control.

In other news, authorities in Arizona issued orders for evacuation and shelter-in-place after a tractor trailer overturned on a freeway in Tuscon, releasing deadly nitric acid.

Canadians Borrowing More to Keep Up With Day-to-Day Expenses

The number of Canadians struggling to keep up with day-to-day expenses and going into debt to sustain their families continues to increase since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a recently released federal government research report.

The report Consumer Vulnerability: Evidence from the Monthly COVID-19 Financial Well-being Survey found that four out of ten Canadians (38%) say they are having to borrow money in order to keep up with their expenses, a 32% increase from August 2020.

Also, more than three times more Canadians say they have sought a loan from a payday loan company or online lender to manage their daily expenses. Nearly five percent of Canadians have sought these services.

Inflation Rose 6.4% in January

The consumer price index (CPI) rose 6.4% in January on an annual basis, hotter than expected, but remained steady compared to last month.

The latest read presents more challenges for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell who has hinted that disinflation is underway.

Still, elevated costs for everyday staples remain stubbornly high.

Retirees Lost 10% of Their Savings in 2022, Survey Says

A year of high inflation and market volatility delivered a hit to retirees’ nest eggs, a new survey shows.

So far in 2023, average retirees have $21,000 less in savings than they did in the beginning of 2022, according to a survey by Clever Real Estate. The loss marked a 10% drop from an average savings of $191,659 to $170,726. The share of retirees with nothing saved increased from 30% to 37%, the survey said.

Many retirees (83%) say inflation has impacted their retirement savings. And overall economic conditions have left many retirees without the recommended amount in savings to live a comfortable retirement, according to experts.

Universal Income Programs Spreading Across US: ‘I Know What Our People Need’

Low-income people and families are receiving up to $1,000 per month from dozens of cities and counties under universal basic income (UBI) programs that are spreading across the country, thanks in part to the billions of dollars provided in the 2021 American Rescue Plan.

Chicago is in the midst of an effort to give 5,000 residents $500 a month, from a $31.5 million pot of money called the Resilient Communities Pilot program. Neighboring counties are offering another $500 a month to another 3,250 residents from a $42 million fund, the New York Times reported.

“Get the Hell Out of There” — Ohio’s Apocalyptic Chemical Disaster Rages On

Update (1300ET): During a press conference, the NTSB referenced a video from Salem, Ohio, about 20 miles from East Palestine which shows sparks and flames emitting from beneath the train. The apparent structural issue with the train was captured on a security camera when it was travelling through Salem. According to Michael Graham, board member on the NTSB, two videos they had obtained were indicative of mechanical issues attributed to the rail car axles which likely led to the derailment.

The second video obtained from when the train was passing through Salem was recorded by a processing plant nearby a hotbox detector which scans the temperature of the axles as trains pass by. According to Graham, the wayside defect detector reading resulted in an alarm alerting the crew of a mechanical issue shortly before the derailment in East Palestine. Consequently, that alert forced the train to execute an emergency brake application which may have been the cause of the derailment. Presently, the NTSB is reviewing the trains data and audio recordings in order to examine the cause of the derailment and which hotbox detector indicated a mechanical error preceding the accident. The NTSB is expected to issue a preliminary report on its findings within 30 days.

16-Year-Old Charged in the Fatal Stabbing of a Student at Harding High School

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) — A 16-year-old was charged with second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of another student at Harding High School on Friday.

According to charging documents, St. Paul police officers were dispatched to Harding High School on Friday for a report of an assault on a student. Upon arrival, school staff was performing life-saving measures on a 15-year-old student. The teen was transported to Regions Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Assistant Principal told investigators he saw two students arguing with another student when they began fighting, charges say. Staff tried to separate the students, but the 16-year-old lunged at the 15-year-old, stabbing him twice.

The charges say the 15-year-old went to the nurse’s office after realizing he had been stabbed while the 16-year-old walked away. A witness who was with the 15-year-old told police the student said he was “dizzy and collapsed.”

The 16-year-old was placed in handcuffs and searched by security staff. The charges say a knife was located on the teen and covered in blood which was turned over to police when they arrived.

Prosecutors filed a presumptive motion on Tuesday for the 16-year-old to be charged as an adult. The teen faces a charge of second-degree murder without intent while committing a felony.

“Obviously, there was some sort of Chinese spy balloon that was up in the air, allegedly. And there’s been a few other objects that have been shot down. I believe that this been going on for a long time.

“Interesting timing on everything; there’s a lot of other things going on in the world.

“There’s some wild sh*t going on right now, Aaron,” McAfee said.

Rodgers said:

“Did you hear about the Epstein client list about to be released, too?

Edward Snowden: UFO Hysteria an ‘Engineered’ Distraction From Nord Stream Pipeline Bombshell

According to Snowden, however, the hysteria surrounding the UFOs was “engineered” as a distraction from the recent bombshell report from renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersh on the destruction of Nord Stream pipelines last fall.

According to Hersh’s bombshell report, the Biden admin orders the U.S. Navy to destroy the pipelines with underwater explosives.

GOP Lawmakers Probe Timing of FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried’s Arrest

Republican lawmakers from the House Financial Services Committee have requested that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) turn over records related to the timing of the Dept. of Justice (DOJ) charges being filed against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and his arrest on the eve of his scheduled testimony before the panel.

Bankman-Fried had agreed to testify before the full House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, following the collapse of his cryptocurrency empire amid allegations he had defrauded investors out of billions of dollars in the implosion. Following the descent of FTX and affiliated firms like Alameda Research into bankruptcy in November, Bankman-Fried had been making the rounds doing interviews in several venues, from the New York Times’ Dealbook summit to appearing in Twitter Spaces.

House lawmakers hoped to question him under oath — particularly after he declined to appear before the Senate Banking Committee, prompting its bipartisan leaders to call it “an unprecedented abdication of accountability.” However, before Bankman-Fried could testify on Dec. 13 he was arrested in the Bahamas on the night of Dec. 12 at the behest of the DOJ, which announced eight charges against him the following day. He was held at a jail in the Bahamas until his extradition and didn’t testify before the committee.

Indiana Republicans Inch Closer to State-Funded Firearms Training for Teachers

Indiana House Republicans approved a bill Tuesday that would begin a state-funded handgun training program for teachers that critics argue would wrongly encourage more guns in classrooms across the state.

The Republican-backed bill passed in a 71-24 vote predominantly on party lines, with supporters saying the training would give teachers opportunities to defend themselves and students if needed. State law currently allows school districts to permit teachers to be armed, but no training is mandated.

“Sadly, it’s something that’s necessary for the tragic world we live in today,” said bill sponsor Republican Rep. Jim Lucas, of Seymour.

New York Times: First Amendment Lawsuit Could be a “Barrier” To Combating “Disinformation”

The federal lawsuit filed by the attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana alleges that federal officials violate the First Amendment when they ask social media companies to take down content or suspend certain accounts. However, according to the New York Times reporter Steven Lee Myers, the lawsuit “could disrupt the Biden administration’s already struggling efforts to combat disinformation.”

Myers further argued that the results of the lawsuit will decide whether, “the First Amendment has become, for better or worse, a barrier to virtually any government efforts to stifle a problem that, in the case of a pandemic, threatens public health and, in the case of the integrity of elections, even democracy itself.”

Put shortly, according to Myers, the First Amendment is a threat to “public health” and “democracy itself.”

Not a Single Student Can Do Math at Grade Level in 53 Illinois Schools…

Authored by Ted Dabrowski and John Klingner via Wirepoints.org

Spry Community Links High School, in the Heart of Little Village in Chicago, says its vision is to “provide a challenging and supportive environment…to enable our students to succeed in the 21st century.”

Number one on the school’s focus list?

But a look at state data that tracks reading and math scores for each Illinois school reveals two frightening facts about Spry. Not a single one of its 88 kids at the school can read at grade level. It’s the same for math. Zero kids are proficient.

Spry is one of 30 schools in Illinois where not a single student can read at grade level. Twenty-two of those schools are part of the Chicago Public Schools and the other eight are outside Chicago.

Ohio Train Derailment Unleashing ‘Chemical Catastrophe’: Dr. Nicole Saphier

Board certified radiologist and Fox News contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier outlines potential health concerns following the Ohio train derailment Tuesday on “America Reports.”

DR. NICOLE SAPHIER: Any time you have a train derailing, there’s a potential for disaster and usually it is confined to the local wreckage. But what we’re seeing going on in Ohio right now is a chemical catastrophe that has the potential to not only affect those who are immediately around the wreckage, those in the local community, but those miles and miles away. They’ve already announced that there has been some finding of the chemicals in the Ohio River. The Ohio River provides drinking water for over 5 million residents.

Now, on February 10… the EPA wrote a letter to Norfolk Southern, which is the train company, saying they did see substances in the water in the ground, also going into the storm drains…and then two days later, you have the EPA saying, however, they didn’t detect any of the chemicals at a significant level. Now, I can tell you, listen, they have decided to do a controlled burn of this vinyl chloride.

There was 20 of the cars that were labeled hazardous materials. They had a lot of dangerous chemicals, a lot of them industrial solvents. Five of those train cars had what’s called vinyl chloride. That’s used for PVC piping and other hard plastics. Now, that is a very, very dangerous substance and one thing that they noted is it is extremely flammable, and it can explode and with that explosion could cause shrapnel to go for miles and miles and also be in the air.

Outrage as James Clapper, Other Hunter Biden Laptop Skeptics Suddenly Speak Out Against Media: ‘What a Fraud’

It’s now an infamous headline among conservatives and a sore spot for Politico. But at the time, the Oct. 19, 2020, story by Natasha Bertrand had its intended bombshell effect with this headline: “Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, dozens of former intel officials say.”

Now former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper says Politico “deliberately distorted” the letter he and more than 50 others — many of them open Joe Biden supporters — signed. Critics are wondering why the players in the story are speaking out more than two years later — just as House Republicans are investigating the matter — and why they didn’t cry foul at their own words being twisted at the time.

“If James Clapper knew Politico and Natasha Bertrand were lying about what their letter said, why didn’t he say so then?” journalist Glenn Greenwald asked on Monday. “Reality: the CIA/IC people lying wanted the media to spread this. Only now that someone has to take the hit is Clapper saying Politico lied.”

The IRS Came After Pro-Israel Groups, But Protected Hamas

by Daniel Greenfield

David Boim was only 17 years old when he was shot and killed while waiting at a bus stop north of Jerusalem. The American teenager’s parents, Stanley and Joyce, have spent a quarter of a century since trying to bring Hamas, the Islamic terror group behind the attack, and its funders in the United States to justice. Their lawsuits have targeted, among others, the Holy Land Foundation which was found in federal court to have provided “material aid to Hamas” in what became the largest terrorism financing prosecution case in the United States.

The Justice Department stated that, “from its inception, HLF existed to support Hamas. Before HLF was designated as a Specially Designated Terrorist by the Treasury Department and shut down in December 2001, it was the largest U.S. Muslim charity.”

It was also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The IRS had allowed money used to fund Islamic terrorists to be funneled through a tax-deductible organization. And that was not the first time or the last.

The Boims are still fighting in court over what they allege are new non-profits that are really ‘alter egos’ that were set up after the Hamas fundraisers lost criminal and civil lawsuits…

White House: UFO Debris May Never be Found

After days of hysteria and speculation over the “unidentified objects” that were recently shot down by the U.S. military, White House officials are now stating that the debris from the UFOs may never be found.

A few days after the Chinese spy balloon was recently down by the U.S. Air Force over the Atlantic, three more “unidentified objects” were shot down over North America.

One UFO was shot down over Alaska on Friday, another over Canada on Saturday, and a third over Lake Huron on Sunday.

However, the Pentagon confirmed that the last three UFOs were not balloons and refused to rule out aliens, causing speculation over what the objects were to run wild.

The U.S. and Canada announced there would be retrieval operations so investigators could better understand, and hopefully identify, these objects.

The person refused treatment, and two other MAID assessors agreed that they had met the criteria for eligibility. The person had a “grievous irremediable condition,” which she says was only irremediable because the person refused the treatments available.

Appeals Court to Reconsider Case Against Allowing Transgender Athletes in Female Sports

Authored by Naveen Athrappully via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours)

A federal appeals court has agreed to reconsider a lawsuit that challenged Connecticut’s policy of allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ athletic events, which followed an earlier court decision that had ruled against the lawsuit.

The case, brought by legal group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), was filed on behalf of four female athletes who claimed that they were consistently deprived of honors and opportunities to compete at elite levels after the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) adopted a policy of allowing males, who identify as females, to compete in female sporting events. In December 2022, a three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit ruled against the lawsuit, which led to the appeal. On Feb. 13, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit announced that the full court will reconsider the case.

The legislation also lays out penalties in the event that a professional or occupational licensing board determines that someone has run afoul of the prohibition.

If they face no jail time or very little and or released with no bail before court hearings what deterrent is there to not go out and do their thug thing to good law abiding people. The MSM gave almost no coverage that this was a criminal on probation or coverage that it was a black man in his forties. Now they all run with the gun ,the gun agenda. If it was a white guy in his twenties . MSM would be blaming right wing media like the daily wire, or fox news, or K. Carson for the shooters action. Or those evil super mega people “Mumbles” Biden shout at clouds about .

  3. The McRae rampage is what happens when felony charges are “negotiated down” to misdemeanors. Judges clear their dockets and pat themselves on the back while innocent people get injured or murdered.

The amount of money involved has not been made public, but these kinds of contracts tend to be gold-edged by far.

The foreign minister in Stefan Löfven’s government, Ann Linde, is now rewarded with a “job” as a so-called advisor to Apple, writes Altinget.

The fact that large American companies, not least on the left, choose to reward former Swedish prime ministers has become a bit of a trend in Sweden in recent years.

Often it is about big money.

Former prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, for example, has pulled in between 10 and 15 million a year on various symbolic jobs, including as an “advisor” to Bank of America and Merril Lynch.

Since it is impossible to know what politicians are rewarded for, the Swedish regulatory framework for politicians who go straight from politics to pseudo-jobs with multi-million dollar salaries has undergone some cosmetic changes.

Ann Linde is therefore notified of certain symbolic restrictions under the Quarantine Act.

“The restriction means a prohibition on using and/or communicating information on individual cases, processes and factual issues that Ann Linde has assimilated as a minister and that are not available to a broader circle,” writes the Karensnämnden in its decision on the former minister.
