The stock market started 2020 with a bang as the Dow Jones Industrial Average knocked out a brand-new high with a 330-point gain. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 also made fresh highs.

The Nasdaq surged 1.3%, the Dow Jones industrials rallied 1.2%, and the S&P 500 advanced 0.8% in today’s trading. Small caps tracked by the Russell 2000 lagged, down 0.4% after paring sharp earlier losses. Preliminary data showed higher volume on both exchanges vs. Tuesday.

Andrew McCabe Said He Lied to FBI About Wall Street Journal Leak

Former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe apologized for lying to agents who spent weeks investigating the source of a leak to the Wall Street Journal that actually came from him, new documents reveal.

Shortly before the 2016 election, The Journal reported that an FBI investigation was underway involving then-candidate Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

McCabe in May 2017 denied that he was the source of the leak — but later fessed up, angering bureau investigators who had been spinning their wheels trying to identify the source of the leak.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Socialite ‘Madam’ Ghislaine Maxwell ‘Is Being Hidden From the FBI in a Series of Safe Houses Because of the Information She Has on Powerful People’

An explosive new report has asserted that deceased sex criminal Jeffery Epstein and his alleged ‘madame’ Ghislaine Maxwell were foreign intelligence ‘assets’, and that she is currently hiding in a safehouse in Israel.

‘Ghislaine is protected. She and Jeffrey were assets of sorts for multiple foreign governments. They would trade information about the powerful people caught in his net — caught at Epstein’s house,’ a unnamed source told Page Six.

Maxwell, 58, has been accused in lawsuits of procuring underage girls for Epstein to sexually traffick among his wealthy and powerful friends, and is reportedly the subject of an ongoing FBI probe.

She has always denied any wrongdoing. Her attorney did not immediately respond to an inquiry from DailyMail.com on Wednesday evening.

Marianne Williamson Lays Off Entire Campaign Staff

The day’s big election “news” is Julian Castro dropping out of the 2020 presidential race. Which is a helpful reminder that Julian Castro was running for president. Most Americans still get him confused with his twin brother Joaquin, who beat him to the punch by not running for president in the first place. (It would’ve been funny if they both ran and then switched places on the campaign trail, just to see if anybody noticed.) The Democratic field just got even less diverse. And the day isn’t even over yet.

This is Not 1979, And Donald Trump is Not Jimmy Carter

The whole world has now seen images of Shiite militants smashing their way into the U.S. embassy, vandalizing U.S. property, and setting a reception area on fire.

Trump cannot let that go without a response, because if he allows the Iranians and their proxies to get away with this, they will just be emboldened to conduct more attacks.

So Trump is going to hit Iran, and then the Iranians and their proxies will almost certainly retaliate. And unless one side decides to back down, a series of escalations could very easily lead us into a cataclysmic war that would not benefit anyone.

This is a very tough test for Trump.

If he does nothing, he will look weak, indecisive, and the comparisons to Jimmy Carter will begin.

But if he hits Iran too hard, we could literally find ourselves in the middle of World War 3.

2020 was shaping up to be a chaotic year anyway, but this crisis threatens to start it with a real bang.

France: Hundreds of Cars Torched and Police Attacked Over New Year’s

Hundreds of cars were set on fire across French cities on New Year’s Eve, with some cities seeing an even larger number of cars burned than the previous year.

Police arrested at least 400 people across France on New Year’s Eve, according to the French Interior Ministry. A total of 100,000 police were deployed, with one source claiming that the level of violence on the night was relatively calm compared to previous years, Le Parisien reports.

Although the general violence was allegedly less than previous years, a 27-year-old man in Haguenau was killed in an accident involving fireworks.

Car burnings have become common across France over New Year’s Eve in recent years, with at least 220 cars set on fire in the city of Strasbourg alone. The city also saw two incidents in which firefighters were ambushed and attacked.

New statistics yearbook shines light on the good side of Poland

Poland’s Central Statistical Office (Glówny Urzad Statystyczny) has released its Yearbook for 2019 and there is a lot to celebrate.

The number of people registered as unemployed has halved since 2015. Four years ago 1.3 million Poles were registered as unemployed but that number has now fallen to 659,000. This drop in unemployment has coincided with a growth in the number of people employed across a variety of sectors. Since 2015 the number of people employed in manufacturing has risen by 200,000, in logistics, officially termed transport and storage, by 100,000, while “retail and wholesale”, “construction” and “professional, scientific and technical activities” sectors have all seen a rise of about 50,000 each.

North Stream 2 Pipeline Continues to Cause Geopolitical Upheaval

by Thomas O. Falk

After the United States prevented Congress from completing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and slapped sanctions on it in mid-December, Russia stepped in. Moscow has now vowed to unilaterally complete the project by 2020, utilizing a Russian pipe-laying ship. Ukraine, like most other Eastern European countries, has criticized the project and also warned Germany of Russia’s expansion of power and further dependence on Moscow.

US Sanctions Have Temporarily Derailed North Stream 2

Nonetheless, Russia’s energy minister Alexander Novak said last Friday that he expects the project to be completed in late 2020 despite the temporary halt to construction. Originally, Nord Stream 2 was scheduled for completion in early 2020, with commissioning expected to start a few months later. Around 80 percent of Nord Stream 2 has already been completed. So far, Russian leadership had only spoken of a delay of a few months.

US sanctions had stopped the project when they caused the contracted Swiss company Allseas to pull its ships out of the project. Allseas was unwilling to be punished by the US for its involvement. Unfortunately, particular and specially-designed ships are required to lay the tubes on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, which left the project in temporary shambles…

Putin and Erdogan Fight for Dominance in Libya

by Mutaher Khan

Ever since the forced demise of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 through NATO’s half-hearted operation, the country has been plunged into intense instability and chaos. Instead of introducing democracy to the North African country, the events of 2011 created a power vacuum which two alternative factions — backed by different global and regional players — are trying to fill.

Libya In A Nutshell: The GNA Versus The LNA

On the one hand, there is the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) with control over Tripoli and the surrounding areas while the oil-rich east is ruled by the rebel leader Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA), which earlier in April launched an offensive to take the capital.

The events since then have led to polarization not only within the country but also in the international arena as Libya’s conflict was quickly co-opted by other players—in the neighborhood and beyond—who are trying to secure their own interests. For example, the GNA government — given its Islamist inclinations — has its key allies in Turkey and Qatar, two countries that have previously thrown their weight behind the Muslim Brotherhood in other states too. Beyond that, the GNA also draws some verbal support from the US and other major powers such as Libya’s former colonizer Italy.

In contrast, Egypt—under Abdel Fateh al-Sisi, a ruthless opponent of the Brotherhood—and the United Arab Emirates are backing Haftar’s militia given its anti-Islamist (and dictatorial) ideology. Then there is Russia, which has an on-ground presence through its mercenary forces, the so-called Wagner Group, aiding Haftar’s rebel group…

WikiLeaks Exposes Phony Claims About Douma

by Nidal Kabalan

Systematic misleading information and doctoring of documents relating to what was supposed to be evidence of a chemical attack that never took place in Douma, east of the Syrian capital Damascus in 2018, have revealed a chain of scandalous practices and malpractice at the highest levels. The fact that this wrongdoing occurred at the head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)—the organization supposed to protect civilians not to have them killed over false claims, rigged documents and fabricated evidence—is all the more shocking and outrageous.

Leaked Documents Reveal OPCW Lies

Batches of leaked internal documents from the OPCW published by Wikileaks this past Friday further exposed the fraudulent nature of an official report on an alleged 2018 chemical weapons attack in Douma—then held by CIA-backed Islamist terrorist factions—revealing the report as having been altered and rigged in order to justify an attack by the United States, Britain and France against the Assad-led Syrian government.

Wikileaks latest round of documents included an email from the Chief of Cabinet at the OPCW, Sebastien Braha, sent on February 28, 2019, just ahead of the release of the final report on the investigation of the Douma incident, demanding deletion of dissenting engineering assessment on the attack. The e-mail also demands the removal of any trace of the report produced by veteran OPCW inspector and ballistics expert Ian Henderson from the organization’s internal registry because it dissents from the view that the Assad government was responsible for a chemical attack at Douma.

“Please get this document out of DRA (Documents Registry Archive). And please remove all traces, if any, of its delivery/storage/whatever in DRA,” the internal e-mail from Braha reads…

The police should be trained to be kinder to immigrants

The police in the Järva area in Stockholm, will undergo a new training to learn how to be more human in how they view the residents of the districts.

The aim is to increase trust between the police and those living in the immigrant-tight neighborhoods.

  2. “Indian Restaurant Hands Out Free Curry and Rice Dishes to Hundreds of Bushfire Victims — Saying ‘It’s Our Duty to Serve Them’” It’s important to note they are sikhs.

  3. “Swedish political science professor Tommy Möller has warned that the unprecedented mass migration into Sweden in the last decade could unravel the country’s “democratic welfare society.” Oh no, who would’ve thought!

  4. “No, Greenland’s ICE Sheet Isn’t Nearing a Melting ‘Tipping Point’” It’s called Greenland for a reason…

The Medieval times and even the Bronze Age were significantly warmer than today and somehow humanity didn’t perish, bees didn’t perish, … If anything, humanity flourished in those periods!

And whoever is worried about CO2 levels should read up on soil fertility. Long story short: raising cattle provides manure -> manure prodives food for soil microbes -> soil microbes bind CO2 into the soil (that’s where that rich black soil comes from) -> carbon rich soil binds water really well and so hence enough moisture and nutrients for plants to grow -> plants feed cattle -> cattle provides more manure. It’s a cycle, literally a self-sufficient cycle. Dropping cattle production because they produce CO2 destroys the land, causing it to be less productive and to dry out.
Single trees draw clouds to themselves and small ponds on the field help retain moisture. They also feed the small water cycle, causing soft local rains (as opposed to thunderstorms from the big water cycle).
The only solution to avoid extremes in the environment is to farm in the same way our ancestors did a century ago.

I don’t think anybody is against the use of better filtration systems in factories to avoid polution. That doesn’t mean production has to go down to meet emisions or whatever.

It’s saddening that the actual solutions don’t require climate change conferences and don’t cost millions of dollars, yet people packing their pockets full dare to claim otherwise (and that includes Greta)!

    • Wow! AK, you brought back great memories of being the “hand” on my great dad’s little retirement farm, 7 decades ago, at the end of my first decade. We used fresh or bagged manure, production was incredible, all those lessons you quoted were learned, observed, practiced for a few years, as well as a hard working little guy could, (spading, plowing, tilling, etc.). Canning, all kinds of fresh vegetarian foods, fruits, plus full learning on a small commercial chicken operation, even candling the eggs. I did it all, guided, taught, watched over by my dad. Spring seeds in flats, or ground, potting, setting out from the greenhouse, etc. Plowing, cultivating (tilling), waiting for right soil moisture, doing what nature permitted us in due course, on and on.

Had forgotten all this, more, your remarks are spot on, and everyone would benefit from this knowledge, in detail. Factory farms have many dangers, microbially, and many more ways. but cheap!

  5. General Soleimani has American, Syrian, Iraqi, Yemeni, Kurdish, Israeli, and Iranian blood on his hands.

Well done US Armed Forces and President Trump.

    • Iran promises retaliation.
I think they will be in the Russian style: when, in response to sanctions and losses in international courts, the authorities raise taxes and lower the standard of living of ordinary Russians.

Iran will hit first by Iranian supporters of secularization.

    • Yes, good job. I sincerely mean it. President Trump and his men demonstrated some spine after several decades.

I believe what President Trump tweeted a few hours ago is more accurate than APN reporter assumption about the popularity of Soleimani among locals:
      https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-tweets-after-u-s-strike-iran-never-won-war-n1109906

I wonder what will happen to the billions of US dollar notes Soleimani stockpiled in the basement of his house. Who will get them?

      • Pretty sure you know he cheers up for US president to that number. So I presume you are beating him to frighten me. That’s very clever of you but it’s unfair. I’m not a mole. haha.

  6. Sweden never paid for siding with Hitler and deserves what it’s getting in spades, and seem to accept this just punishment.

    • they sided with the allies just as much (No swedish intelligence no Bismarck getting sunk)
