An Australian Shi’ite named Mansor Almaribe, who was arrested last month while making the hajj in Saudi Arabia, has been sentenced to 500 lashes after being found guilty of blasphemy. It is not clear exactly what blasphemous action led to his conviction.
In other news, someone in the crowd in front of La Scala Opera House in Milan attempted to egg Italian prime minister Mario Monti, but succeeded only in hitting the premier’s car.
