Burglars’ Lives Matter

Oliveto is a village in the south of Italy, near Reggio Calabria in the toe of the Italian boot. A butcher in Oliveto recently came home to find his house invaded by burglars. In the ensuing encounter, an altercation arose during which the householder grabbed a knife and stabbed one of the home invaders, who later succumbed to his wounds.

As you might imagine, times being what they are, the butcher is now in deep trouble, having been charged with murder.

Video transcript:

00:01   Do you know the butcher, the gentleman whose house was burglarized, yesterday morning?
00:06   Yes, of course. He’s a man who lives here, a very good person, and who also frequents our shop.
00:11   A beautiful, healthy family, with values, where everyone works.
00:15   Decent people; there’s nothing else to say.
00:23   Oliveto, a village of less than a thousand people in the outskirts of Reggio Calabria.
00:27   Yesterday morning, at around 9am, a gang of thieves,
00:31   coming from Catania, made up of four people, broke into this house.
00:37   The attempted burglary, however, ended in a tragedy because the owner of the house,
00:41   a 48-year-old butcher, a married man and the father of an 18-year-old son,
00:46   returned home at around 10am, heard some noises, and according to the investigation,
00:51   he took a kitchen knife, with which he stabbed two of the burglars who were inside.
00:56   The accomplices were waiting in a car. One of the burglars, Alfio Stancampiano, 30 years old,
01:00   received deep wounds in the abdomen.
01:03   The accomplices abandoned him in front of the Morelli Hospital of Reggio Calabria,
01:07   but he died on the spot. The three continued their escape.
01:10   They arrived in front of Villa San Giovanni boat station, left the car there and embarked.
01:16   One of them, a 46-year-old man, was unwell. He had no other choice
01:19   but to be treated at the Messina Hospital. Another accomplice was identified shortly afterwards.
01:24   The fourth man is missing, while the 48-year-old butcher from Reggio is in custody now.
01:28   He has been charged with murder and attempted murder.
01:32   We used to go to school together. Elementary school and middle school, too.
01:37   We even used to sit at the same desk. Clearly this will ruin his family
01:41   and his life, and we are very sorry for that.
01:46   From the outside, it’s easy to speak. We’re all good at condemning, at speaking.
01:49   But just put yourself in his shoes: you find two people inside your home,
01:53   who surely, when they saw him, I don’t think they said to him, “Well done, I clap my hands at you”.
01:57   Surely, they must have reacted too, and so he defended himself.
02:02   We must keep in mind, that these people entered his house.

  1. I recently saw a video on youtube where a lawyer was quoted (he defended a man who shot at both his cheating wife and the guy): Why did you let them live? Now they outnumber you two to one.

    Just sayin…

  2. Same thing happened to a man in Carlisle England at the end of the 1990’s. Three armed with knives home invaders attacked man in his home. He wrested a knife away from oand stabbed him’. The attacker died. Man was charged with murder. At his sentencing the Crown Court judge said, ‘We can’t be having people going around stabbing and killing other people’.
