Gates of Vienna News Feed 12/8/2023

A 72-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly used his pickup truck to run down and injure several people waiting for the start of the Christmas parade in Bakersfield, California. If he was committing truck jihad, it was very inefficient, because he reversed his vehicle into the crowd. The driver fought with police when they came to arrest him. Alcohol is said to have played a role in the incident.

In other news, a young woman named Laneisha Shantrice Henderson was arrested for using gasoline to try to burn down the birth home of Martin Luther King Jr in Atlanta, Georgia.

Germany Struggles to Fund Green Agenda

Germany’s three-party coalition government is struggling to agree on next year’s budget after a court ruling tossed the country into an economic crisis. The turmoil could hurt the economy and hinder Green agenda investments, but an audit court has warned that a recently approved supplementary budget could also be unconstitutional.

As the government seeks to fill the hole in the budget, Finance Minister Christian Lindner ruled out tax increases, and emphasised that his country’s debt brake “must be respected.”

As we previously reported, the constitutional court ruled on November 15th that a move to redirect €60 billion of unused loans meant to combat the effects of the pandemic to a climate fund was unconstitutional. In December 2021, the coalition of Social Democrats, Greens, and the liberal FDP agreed to transfer €60 billion of untapped credit to its so-called climate and transformation fund.

Poland: FDI Soared 25% in 2022

Foreign direct investment (FDI) into Poland in 2022 totaled 140 billion zlotys (€32.3 billion), up by 25 percent from 2021, according to the Polish Central Bank (NBP)

FDI is now double what it was in the pre-pandemic period, according to NBP. More than half of the 140 billion is composed of reinvested profits but also includes almost 30 billion zlotys of purchased shares. In 2022, FDI accounted for 4.6 percent of GDP.

U.S. Payrolls Rose 199,000 in November, Unemployment Rate Falls to 3.7%

Job creation showed little signs of a letup in November, as payrolls grew even faster than expected and the unemployment rate fell despite signs of a weakening economy.

Nonfarm payrolls rose by a seasonally adjusted 199,000 for the month, slightly better than the 190,000 Dow Jones estimate and ahead of the unrevised October gain of 150,000, the Labor Department reported Friday. The numbers were boosted by sizeable gains in government hiring as well as workers returning from strikes in the auto and entertainment industries.

The unemployment rate declined to 3.7%, compared with the forecast for 3.9%, as the labor force participation rate edged higher to 62.8%. A more encompassing unemployment rate that includes discouraged workers and those holding part-time positions for economic reasons fell to 7%, a decline of 0.2 percentage point.

2024 White House Hopefuls Shred DOJ, ‘Deep State’ Over Timing of Hunter Biden Indictment: ‘Slow-Walked’

Multiple candidates hoping to replace Joe Biden as president in next year’s presidential election pulled no punches Friday in response to the indictment of his son, Hunter, a day earlier.

The indictment, which was handed down Thursday by DOJ Special Counsel David Weiss in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, included nine charges alleging a “four-year scheme” when Hunter did not pay his federal income taxes from January 2017 to October 2020 while also filing false tax reports.

“The timing of the Hunter Biden tax indictment is one more sign that the deep state is planning to sideline Biden & pick a new puppet for 2024, all the while using this indictment as a perfect fig leaf to claim that the Trump prosecutions aren’t politically motivated. Kills two birds with one stone,” Republican entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy wrote in a post on X.

Alarms Are Raised Over California Law Enforcing “Media Literacy” in Schools

There’s gathering contention over a newly-introduced California law that appears to be timed with the kick-off of presidential campaigns. The law, Assembly Bill 873, is touted by its supporters as a tool to help students differentiate between accurate, impartial information and opinionated “misinformation.” However, critics see it as yet another ploy by the state to undermine and mute non-mainstream media channels in the minds of young children.

Santa Clara University ed-tech professor, Pedro Hernandez-Ramos, voiced his views on the topic, saying, as reported by the Washington Times. “Legislation became necessary at the state level when the federal government didn’t take action.” He further accuses President Trump of manipulating information to serve his own interests and causing harm to others.

Biden Administration to Investigate 6 Additional Schools for Discrimination Amid Israel-Hamas War

The Department of Education announced this week that an additional six schools across the country are being investigated for discrimination amid the Israel-Hamas war.

Investigations into Montana State University, Tulane University, Union College, the University of Cincinnati, Santa Monica College, and Cobb County School District in Georgia, were opened over the past week by the DOE’s Office for Civil Rights. The investigations are focusing on cases of alleged discrimination that involve shared ancestry.

A DOE spokesperson declined to comment on the investigations, but pointed Fox News Digital to a November press release after opening investigations into several schools after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack by Hamas.

Florida Man Arrested After ‘Highly Volatile’ Homemade Explosive Found at Home During Drug Bust, Deputies Say

WINTER PARK, Fla. — What started out as a search warrant for drugs at a home in Winter Park on Thursday ended up with the evacuation of several homes in the area after a homemade explosive was found, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

Mark Severson was arrested and charged with possession of explosives and manufacture of explosives with intent to do bodily harm, plus other drug possession charges for methamphetamine, MDMA and marijuana, according to deputies. Records show that Severson is a system engineer for an unnamed intelligence analyst.

Deputies executed a search warrant on the 40-year-old man’s home on Thursday for drugs, according to an affidavit. When they arrived, they found “numerous chemical powders” that are “consistent with pyrotechnic manufacturing and the manufacture of homemade explosives,” deputies said. This discovery triggered a secondary search warrant to be obtained and executed, which was signed that day.

eputies continued their search and tested the powders for explosive materials. They found a white crystalline powder which appeared to have been synthesized in the home, deputies said. It tested positive for triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a “highly volatile homemade explosive mixture that cannot be moved and must be disposed of in place due to the high likelihood of unintended detonation,” the affidavit said.

Officials said they found half-a-pound of TATP.

Due to the powder’s volatility, detectives evacuated five homes in the immediate vicinity for a short time on Thursday and also conducted reverse 911 calls to neighboring homes in the Winter Park neighborhood on Alena Court.

Gun Rights Group Applauds After Federal Appeals Court Deals Blow to NY Concealed Carry Law

Gun rights activists cheered Friday after a federal appeals court struck down parts of New York’s expansive concealed carry law.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit blocked three provisions of New York’s “Concealed Carry Improvement Act” (CCIA), a law Democrats passed last year in response to a Supreme Court ruling that declared the state’s previous concealed carry permitting requirements unconstitutional. In doing so, the appeals court allowed other parts of the law to go into effect.

In a 261-page ruling, the three-judge panel struck down a requirement that gun owners disclose their social media accounts for review when applying for a concealed carry permit. The court also blocked restrictions on carrying firearms on private property that is accessible to the public, as well as a restriction on concealed carry in houses of worship.

The bill failed in a vote of 13-84 and received support from seven Democrats, five Republicans, and one Independent, Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT). The resolution was introduced by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who argued the US occupation of eastern Syria risks a major regional war.

“Nobody Will Defend Spain Better Than the Spaniards”: An Interview With Pablo Mariñoso

Pablo Mariñoso is a graduate in international relations, a reporter for La Gaceta, and a regular contributor to other media, such as Revista Centinela, La Iberia, and Libro sobre Libro. Mariñoso is the spokesman for the Romance de Ferraz, an initiative that arose in support of the protests against amnesty for Catalonian separatists.

Why do you go to Ferraz every night?

I am going to Ferraz, together with hundreds and thousands of young people, to save Spain. These are not just demonstrations against the amnesty; they are in favour of the unity of Spain and the freedom of Spaniards—freedom to pray the rosary, to demonstrate, to express opinions. Nor is it just a protest—it is a vindication: a vindication of faith, through the rosary; a vindication of Spanish literature, for example, with the reading of the romance; and even of Spanish traditions, such as the barbecue that was held in Ferraz. Many older people also attend, which shows that youth is an attitude of the soul.

Can Europe Have a Nuclear Renaissance?

Despite the criticism of nuclear power in Europe, which has led to the termination of every German reactor and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s view that nuclear power is not “strategic” for decarbonisation, it is important not to overlook the positive steps being taken. These include the backing by MEPs of small-scale reactors and the Parliament’s decision to put nuclear on the list of technologies eligible for preferential treatment. Yet there is, as panellists at The European Conservative’s latest event made clear, much more to be done.

Highlighting the scale of the problem, Ladislav Ilcic, a Croatian MEP who serves as a member of the Bureau of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group, said that “we are losing on all possible levels.” He explained that most of the mainstream media coverage “is not based in common sense” and they will “always play the game against” those who support a pro-nuclear shift; just as there aren’t enough supporters on the political and academic levels to produce any meaningful change.

EU Leader in Tough Trade Talks With China

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, is visiting China for talks on Russia sanctions and the imbalance in EU-Chinese trade. The AFP reports:

On the economy, von der Leyen stressed that Europe was not trying to “de-couple” itself from the Chinese powerhouse, but to “de-risk” ties that had become too one-sided. “We have seen a growing trade imbalance. The trade imbalance has doubled in the last two years up to almost 400 billion euros by now,” she said.

According to Politico, the EU leadership is worried about the combination of a trade deficit and the recent slowdown in the Chinese economy.

Far-Left MEP Kicked Out of Group for Harassing Over a Dozen Assistants

A member of the European Parliament has been kicked out of the far-left France Insoumise group following allegations that she harassed at least 13 different parliamentary assistants since 2019, including behaving aggressively towards the employees.

MEP Anne-Sophie Pelletier was booted from France Insoumise (LFI) after the party announced her departure in a press release on Monday, December 4th. They stated that 13 parliamentary assistants had claimed “degraded working conditions and harassing, inappropriate, and aggressive behaviour towards them on the part of Anne-Sophie Pelletier,” Le Parisien reports.

The LFI group added that the behaviour of Pelletier was incompatible with the party’s values and that it would be taking measures to make sure the parliamentary assistants who made the accusations would be able to keep their positions.

France: 4 in 10 Muslim Students Refuse to Unequivocally Condemn Stabbing of Teacher in Islamist Terror Attack

Nearly 4 in 10 Muslim students in France opted against unequivocally condemning the stabbing of teacher Dominique Bernard by an Islamist extremist on Oct. 13 in recent polling.

The Ifop survey asked a weighted sample of 1,805 students in French state education between the ages of 15 and 17 the following: “A teacher, Dominique Bernard, was murdered by an Islamist of Ingush origin in a high school in Arras. When you think of the perpetrator of this assassination, what is your reaction?”

When accounting for all students, 91 percent expressed total condemnation of the murder, 3 percent said they condemned the attack but shared some of the motivations of the jihadist, 2 percent refused to condemn the attack, and 4 percent said they were indifferent regarding the issue.

However, when focusing purely on the demographic of students who are practicing Muslims, the figures changed considerably.

German Left Loses Parliamentary Status After Ten MPs Leave Party

Is the end in sight for the socialist Die Linke party after it was stripped of its parliamentary status in the German Bundestag? The grouping was placed into a state of financial liquidation, following the departure of Sahra Wagenknecht MP and her faction of nine other MPs, critical of the party’s embrace of woke culture and support for mass immigration.

Founded in 2007, Die Linke has been riven by intense faction-fighting over the party’s response to the Ukraine war and migration as the rise of the AfD cut into its traditional heartland in the former DDR.

Germany: Limited Political Support for Banning AfD

CDU MP Marco Wanderwitz, who for months has been working to amass support for draft legislation that seeks to ban the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, has refused to say how many MPs support his anti-democratic initiative, leaving some to believe he’s failed to collect the small number of signatures required to bring the motion before the Bundestag.

When asked by the daily newspaper Die Tageszeitung how many MPs he’s managed to persuade to sign on to the plan, Wanderwitz declined to provide details on specific individuals who have endorsed the plan or the total number of supporters he already has.

Wanderwitz, the former Eastern Commissioner under Merkel’s federal government, had previously expressed his desire to bring the draft legislation before the Bundestag—which requires the support of a mere 36 MPs (5%)—by the end of this year.

Now, quite possibly lacking the backing he needs, Wanderwitz has pushed the date back.

Germany’s Left Party Loses Parliamentary Faction as Rival Left-Wing Party Led by Wagenknecht Rises

Since midnight on Tuesday, the German Left party no longer has a parliamentary faction in the Bundestag. The left-wing party, which was founded in 2005 and still had nearly 12 percent of the vote in 2009, is losing hundreds of thousands of euros in funding.

The Left achieved only 4.9 percent in the 2021 parliamentary elections, which normally would have left the party unable to enter parliament, but three of its candidates also won direct seats, allowing it to form a parliamentary faction despite falling short of the 5-percent threshold,

After a year and a half, however, the party’s problems have only grown worse, according to Hungarian news outlet 444.hu. At the party congress in June 2023, its leadership openly distanced itself from the dissident Sahra Wagenknecht, who was also called on to resign her seat. She has since signaled she will form her own rival party, with polling showing it will spell the end of the Left party.

Tanaiste Micheal Martin expressed major concerns regarding the efficiency of social media platforms in rallying massive crowds in the wake of the disruption.

Meta, TikTok, and Google representatives took center stage before the Oireachtas media committee, addressing the international attention Dublin received. They discussed issues related to media literacy, misinformation, and their response to the riots.

However, the absence of representatives from X at the committee drew criticism from pro-censorship ministers.

Netherlands: “Many Christians Regard Wilders and His Party as a Conditional Ally”: An Interview With Bart-Jan Spruyt

In an interview with Mark Steyn for the Jewish Independent over a decade ago, I mentioned several ‘far-right’ figures and included the name of Geert Wilders, the Dutch MP who had emerged as one of Islam’s fiercest critics during the War on Terror years. “What are you talking about?” Steyn sputtered, “I’m far-right: pro-life, pro-traditional marriage. I like Wilders, but he’s to the far Left on every one of these issues! The civilization he wants to defend is Amsterdam’s vibrant gay scene!” This was coming from the man who wrote the foreword to Wilders’ 2012 memoir Marked for Death: Islam’s War against the West and Me, which describes Wilders’ ideology as well his life under police protection since a price was put on his head by angry Islamists.

Steyn was right. Wilders is not a conservative—at least, not in the sense that most Christians would understand the word. He is a staunch defender of the sexual revolution and the consensus of the last half-century—a man who believes that abortion should be legal but that madrassas should not. While he occasionally gives a nod to the Christian heritage of the West, he is more likely to cut it out. I remember watching a speech he gave in 2010 at a protest in New York City, where the construction of a mosque was being planned within spitting distance of Ground Zero. At one point in his speech, he quoted Abraham Lincoln. “Those who deny freedom to others,” he told the crowd, “deserve it not for themselves!”

I recognized the quote—it hung on my wall at home and was taken from a letter Lincoln wrote to H.L. Pierce on April 6, 1859—but Wilders had removed half of the sentence. The full quote reads: “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long retain it.” The omission sums up Wilders’ worldview quite succinctly—he treasures the freedom, but not the source.

Right-Wing Surge Projected in 2024 EU Elections

Leftist parties together with the center-right EPP dominated the European Parliament in the past five years, practically excluding the two conservative groups (ECR and ID) from Brussels’ decision-making process. However, it’s not going to be easy to do so after June 2024 if the latest predictions materialize.

The projections published by EU Matrix, a leading Brussels-based analytical research agency, on December 5th, predicts left-wing parties losing seats across Europe to the sovereigntist Right, finally making a right-wing majority in the EU Parliament a possibility.

Swedish MEP Staffer Among Victims in Brussels Shooting

Four people were injured Wednesday night in Brussels after a shooting in the heart of the Belgian capital near the European Parliament with a female member of the Swedish European People’s Party (EPP) delegation among the wounded.

The shooting happened in the Porte de Namur shopping district outside a local Apple shop at around 7:30 p.m., according to official statements. One of those shot suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The gunman swiftly left the scene as onlookers took refuge in an adjacent retail store.

Police were quick to cordon off the district and ruled out terrorism as a motivation for the attack. An EPP spokesmanperson confirmed to Politico that their employee was recovering from their wounds.

The name or the professional background of the thirty-year-old Swede has so far not been given though she is believed to be affiliated with the centrist Moderate Party. An official police statement ruled out the possibility of more than one attacker.

UK: Elderly Woman Dies After Foreign Carers Fail to Grasp Basic English

Barbara Rymell, who suffered from dementia, was 91 when she fell down some stairs and became trapped under a stairlift after being left unattended at her Somerset care home. Her two carers, who were Romanian and Indian, were unable to explain to emergency services what had happened, failing to understand the difference between the resident being “alive” and “alert,” or “breathing” and “bleeding.”

An inquest has heard that their poor grasp of English meant it was “virtually impossible” for the call handler to make a “meaningful” assessment of Mrs. Rymell’s condition, which was classified as “serious” rather than requiring an “immediate” response. By the time paramedics did arrive at the home, Mrs. Rymell had died.

UK: Sunak Pushes Ahead With Smoking Ban

The British government is not messing about with its plan to phase out smoking. And unlike measures to stop illegal migration, it looks as though this actually will be carried through, even if (or when) the Tories lose the next election, since it has the backing of Labour.

Ministers will make it an offence for anyone born after 1 January, 2009 to be sold tobacco in England. It is not yet clear how officials will police the purchasing of tobacco on behalf of someone born after this time by another born just slightly before it during the likely jolty, “two-tiered” phase-out period.

A consultation on these plans ended on Wednesday. This received around 25,000 responses—far more than the piddly 567 picked up by the government’s call for evidence on AI in education.

Vatican Threatens German Episcopate With Excommunication Over Liberal Reforms

Pope Francis’ first-in-command has threatened the German episcopate with excommunication due to increasingly liberal policies.

Hungarian newspaper Mandiner reported on a letter sent by Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to the German episcopate indicating that if “the German daughter church wanted to accept homosexual relationships or attempt to ordain women as priests,” it would be disowned by the Catholic Church.

This is the result of a “synodal journey” by the German particular church over several years. While a Synod of Bishops on Synodality was held in the Vatican in October under the leadership of Pope Francis, the German Church, led by the secular Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), has been on a very different reform path since 2019. This has led to the initiation of fundamental doctrinal changes in the church and has brought it close to schism.

New Pledges of Military and Finanical Support to Ukraine Down 90 Per Cent in a Year: Report

A German research body that tracks donations to Ukraine says the value of pledges fell almost 90 per cent between Autumn 2022 and 2023, with levels dwindling since this Summer, around the time of Kyiv’s ‘Spring Offensive’.

Pledges of military and financial aid to Ukraine are now lower than they were before the renewed Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Keil Institute says of its latest tranche of data published through its Ukraine Support Tracker programme. Noting donors have become “more hesitant in recent months”, Christoph Trebesch, a director at the Institute claimed “a further delay” to large aid programmes planned by the European Union and the United States of America would “significantly strengthen Putin’s position”.

Illustrating the degree to which aid was drying up for Ukraine, the report stated “Newly pledged aid hit a low between August and October 2023” and had fallen a remarkable 87 per cent compared to the same period in 2022. The value of promises to Ukraine is now the lowest since January 2022, the month before Russia renewed its invasion.

West No Longer Sees Ukraine as Something Special, Expert Says

According to the expert, Moscow’s “strategic decision to try to hold on longer than the West is working”

LONDON, December 9. /TASS/. Western countries no longer see the Ukraine conflict as their own security issue, Jacob Kirkegaard, senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), told the Financial Times.

“Ukraine is no longer special. It is no longer regarded as this issue of national security, of paramount importance for the EU, NATO, or the United States. Because if that was the case, people wouldn’t be playing politics with it,” he said, as cited by the newspaper.

“It is a devaluation of the Ukrainian war effort. There is no other way to put it, in my opinion. And that, for Ukraine, is a terrible situation,” Kirkegaard added, commenting on the situation surrounding additional US and EU aid for Ukraine. France: National Assembly Rejects Bid to Change Franco-Algerian Immigration Deal

The question of renegotiating an agreement signed in 1968 between France and Algeria is being raised as part of the immigration bill to be examined on Monday, December 11th, by the French National Assembly. The agreement grants major privileges to Algerians in France in terms of employment, movement, and residence. The Right is in favour of renegotiating the agreement, but the government is hesitating.

In 1968, six years after Algeria’s independence, France, under General de Gaulle, signed an agreement with the Algerian government granting numerous privileges to Algerian nationals wishing to travel to France, work there, or settle there.

In practice, the 1968 agreement, governed by international law, exempts Algerians from ordinary French immigration law and allows them to benefit from special privileges. The agreement makes it easier for Algerians to enter France. They benefit from legal entry conditions and therefore do not need long-stay visas. It enables them to obtain a residence permit, valid for 10 years, more quickly than nationals of other countries. Their conditions of access to family reunification are also more favourable: family members admitted to reside in France receive a residence permit for the same duration as the person they are joining. Algerian nationals can also apply for a 10-year residence certificate after just 3 years of residence, compared to 5 years under ordinary law.

Germany: CDU Fears Islamist Bloc as Millions of Turkish Migrants to be Granted Voting Rights

New German citizenship laws that expand voting rights to up to 2.5 million recent migrants are unnerving even the usually complacent CDU, with one conservative lawmaker airing fears that the new arrangement could enable a potential Islamist bloc to attain parliamentary representation in the Bundestag.

The migrant voters are expected to be added to the electoral registry under plans by Berlin’s ruling traffic light coalition to fast-track naturalisation among Germany’s foreign-born population, which would reduce the residency time needed to attain citizenship to as little as three years.

This rapid and politically calculated expansion of suffrage has lent itself to fears of a Turkish-led Islamist takeover, with CDU MP Alexander Throm stating that the proposed legislation could fuel the “demographic potential” for an AKP-controlled spinoff party in Germany.

  1. ‘Great replacement theory’
Ramaswamy also boosted the “great replacement theory,” the white nationalist belief that immigration policies are designed specifically to dilute the political power of white Americans by making them a smaller share of the population.

I asked (under a fake account) a migrant human rights activist who was deported from the Russian Federation and now lives in Illinois what she thought about Vivek Ramaswamy.

“There are also idiots and scoundrels among the migrants. The Indian community is STRONGLY AGAINST Ramaswamy, he is a migrantphobe.” – she answered.

    • How about a “great replacement fact”? Look at London. No mere “belief” somebody has.

Vivek is the Ross Perot of this election. He’ll blurt anything. 🙂

How does your Russian contact know what the Indian community is strongly against, Elena? Maybe I am misunderstanding and she is Indian?

      • No, not Indian. She is a citizen of Uzbekistan, but claims to be Ukrainian. Although she has a Russian mother. She has been working on replacement migration issues in Russia for 15 years. All this time she received foreign grants from IOM, Caritas, etc.
In 2021, the FSB deported from the Russian Federation.
If you are interested, she is quite famous, her name is Valentina Chupik.
