Gates of Vienna News Feed 3/1/2018

Last week’s explosion on a ferryboat in the Mexican town of Playa del Carmen was caused by an explosive device, and not by mechanical problems, as was originally thought. Investigators discovered two similar devices in other ferries. The U.S. embassy has now issued a warning to American citizens in Mexico.

In other news, Tommy Robinson’s Twitter account was suspended after he tweeted about the fact that almost 90% of defendants convicted of “grooming” offenses have turned out to be Muslims.

Jobless Claims Hit Lowest Level Since 1969

New claims for unemployment benefits fell to their lowest level since 1969 last week.

Economists had been expecting 226,000 new jobless claims, a rise over the previous week. Instead, claims unexpectedly fell by 10,000 to 210,000 in the week ending on February 24.

The more stable four week moving average of claims also declined, dropping by 5,000 to 220,500. That is also the lowest level in 49 years.

Man Who Sent White Powder to Donald Trump Jr. Is a Far-Left Gun Control Advocate

The Massachusetts man charged with sending a threatening letter filled with white powder to Donald Trump Jr. that sent his wife to the hospital is a far-left gun control advocate who has supported numerous anti-Trump political causes.

24-year-old Daniel Frisiello was arrested after a federal investigation traced the unsigned letters to him as a result of Frisiello also ordering a “glitter bomb” for one of the intended recipients using his own name.

Canadians’ Confidential Tax Info to be Shared With Police in Other Countries

Confidential information from Canadian taxpayers could be shared with police and authorities in dozens of countries around the world, under measures quietly included in Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s budget.

Confidential information from Canadian taxpayers could soon be shared with police and authorities in three dozen countries around the world, under measures included in Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s latest budget.

In an inconspicuous section tucked into a small 78-page annex to the budget, the government says it wants to give police and tax authorities new powers to fight tax evasion and advance international investigations into serious crimes, ranging from drug trafficking and money laundering to terrorism.

“The sharing of information internationally for the investigation, prosecution and suppression of serious criminal offences, both tax-related and non-tax-related, is vital to the global fight against serious crime and is consistent with the government’s commitments to address global tax evasion and improve the fairness of the tax system,” says the budget annex.

‘Buried’ in the budget

A civil liberties advocate accuses the government of using the budget to hide controversial changes.

“If you can get something buried in the budget that nobody knows about, sometimes you can get something passed without getting the kind of heat it deserves,” said Michael Bryant, executive director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and a former Ontario attorney general.

“Well, this deserves a lot of heat from the opposition and scrutiny from media…

Brexit Secretary Threatens Not to Pay ‘Divorce Bill’ Unless EU Backs Down on Northern Ireland

The UK will refuse to pay the agreed so-called Brexit ‘divorce bill’ unless the European Union (EU) backs down on its attempt to force Northern Ireland to stay inside the bloc’s Customs Union.

The EU’s demands on Northern Ireland have been described as an attempt to “annex” the province by critical MPs and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), who called it “constitutionally unacceptable” and potentially “catastrophic”.

‘Bury the Filthy Disbeliever’: UK Islamic Radio Fined for Hate Speech

A Muslim radio station that broadcast a chant glorifying their “warlike” prophet Muhammad, and encouraged the beheading of “lowlifes” and murder of “filthy” non-Muslims, has been fined £2,000 by the regulator for “hate speech”.

Radio Dawn is transmitted in foreign languages in the Nottingham area and broadcast the offending ‘Nasheed’ — an Islamic chant set to music — in December 2016.

The station is run by the Karimia Institute, which was founded by Musharraf Hussain who was awarded an OBE in 2009 for “services to community relations”.

French Far-Right Leader Marine Le Pen Charged Over ISIS Photos

PARIS (AP) — French prosecutors filed preliminary charges Thursday against Marine Le Pen for tweeting brutal images of Islamic State violence.

The prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre said the charges were issued for “distribution of violent images.” If the case eventually reaches trial and she’s convicted, Le Pen could face up to three years in prison and a 75,000-euro ($90,000) fine.

Le Pen’s December 2015 tweets showed executions by IS extremists, including the killing of American reporter James Foley. She posted them in the wake of the November 2015 IS attacks on Paris, accusing the government of not doing enough to protect France.

Le Pen told BFM television Thursday “it’s clearly aimed at silencing me. Yet I will not be silenced”. Le Pen said she would consider a potential conviction as a “medal of patriotism and defense of the French people.”

The preliminary charges were made possible after the French parliament lifted her immunity from prosecution in the case late last year.

Lawyer Rodolphe Bosselut, representing Le Pen in the case, confirmed the charges but wouldn’t comment.

It’s one of multiple legal cases targeting Le Pen or the National Front.

In one high-profile investigation, she and the party have to respond to charges over the misuse of European funds. She denies wrongdoing.

Le Pen, who was a distant runner-up to Emmanuel Macron in last year’s presidential run-off, plans to propose a new name for the National Front at a congress later this month, in an apparent effort to distance it from past problems and stigma. The party could also end the honorary presidency of Le Pen’s father and National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, as part of a protracted family feud.

Marine Le Pen’s French-first, Islam-skeptic nationalism resonated widely in the wake of Donald Trump’s election and Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

Alhaw’s motives are not yet clear to the investigators. According to Hamburg’s Interior Senator Andy Grote, Islamist motives and ‘mental liability’ might have been at play.

Netherlands: Beheaded Doll at Amsterdam Mosque: Arrest Made in Hoofddorp

The police arrested a 35-year-old man from Hoofddorp on Wednesday in connection with a bloody, decapitated doll left at Emir Sultan Mosque in Amsterdam Noord in January.

Passersby found the doll in front of the mosque early on Thursday, January 18th and reported it to the police. The police immediately launched an investigation, which led them to the Hoofddorp man. “The suspect is known to be driven by ideological motives”, the police said. He has no previous violent crime incidents on his record, the police added.

The incident with the doll prompted interim Amsterdam mayor Jozias van Aartsen to raise concerns about minorities increasingly being targeted in Amsterdam.

He met with members of the Muslim community after the doll was found. “I can imagine the fear very well. They experience this as an attack. It was seen by mothers and especially children from the school in front of the mosque. It had a huge impact on their lives, it hit them emotionally. A mosque should be a safe home”, the mayor said in a city council debate on the incident.

People Disgusted by Body Odour More Likely to be Right Wing

A study has found that the more a person is revolted by the smell of body odour and urine the more likely they are to be right wing and want to secure national borders.

Research conducted by the University of Stockholm, Sweden, also found that left-wingers were less revolted by bad personal hygiene, reports MailOnline.

Psychologists believe that it represents a deep-rooted “defence mechanism” against contagious diseases.

Indeed, a Royal Society paper proposed in 2011 that disgust “evolved to motivate infectious disease avoidance”.

In his latest interview for the Iranian English-language TV network, live from their studio in Beirut, Srdja Trifkovic discusses the developments surrounding the Korean peninsula. [Watch interview here.]

Q: Foreign affairs editor of Chronicles magazine Srdja Trifkovic joins us via satellite from the Lebanese capital Beirut . . . First of all, what are your impressions of the comments by the South Korean president Moon Jae-in, with regards to lowering the threshold of talks with North Korea.

ST: It is interesting that he called both on the United States and North Korea to “lower the threshold.” In a way, the U.S. ally South Korea was acting as if it were keeping a somewhat equidistant position between Washington and Pyongyang. Of course in substance this is not the case, but the South Koreans have every reason to be extremely worried. Let me draw your attention to a remarkable statement by the Republican Senator James Risch of Idaho, at the Munich Security Conference the week before last. He said that if North Korea does not give up its nuclear program, President Trump has the option to wage a brief war of biblical proportions. He even said that it would be one of the most catastrophic events in the history of our civilization. There would be mass casualties, the like of which the world has never seen…

Italian Voters Set to Shake European Union to Its Core as Anti Mass Migration and Euroscepticism Dominate Election

Italians are set to elect a new government on Sunday with anti-mass migration and Eurosceptic parties dominating the polls in an election that could shake the European Union to its foundations.

The Italian national election has the potential to send a wave through Europe not seen since the Brexit vote in 2016. The migration crisis, which has flooded Italy with hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants, along with EU rules preventing bank bailouts and soaring migrant crime and unemployment, has fueled the growth of populism and the collapse of the political establishment.

  1. A bit of Russian routine.

In Adygea, the stepfather-migrant raped his 12-year-old stepdaughter. The crime was revealed when the girl was seven months pregnant. The girl’s mother brought her to the hospital with complaints of pain in her stomach. However, the ultrasound revealed that the sixth grader is pregnant and the term is already quite long and the abortion is too late. Then the girl told that she was raped by her stepfather from Tajikistan. And then the man forced the schoolgirl to keep silent about what had happened, threatening to punish her mother. The man was able to prove guilt after the birth of the child. The DNA test proved that the girl gave birth to a daughter from her stepfather

    • Raif Badawi was flogged in front of the al-Jafali mosque in Jeddah after Friday prayers on January 9, 2015. That mosque was no safe home for him or any of the other prisoners who have been subjected to the sting of Saudi justice there in front of braying crowds. Is it possible that that mosque forgets to preach the message of a merciful Allah on flogging Fridays? Perhaps Amsterdam’s mayor could issue the imams there a reminder.
