A group of migrants in Germany became angry and smashed up their living quarters in an asylum center. The eight newly-arrived “refugees” — all of them from sub-Saharan Africa — were reportedly unhappy with the lack of a phone signal, and broke up their accommodation with iron bars in response.
In other news, French President François Hollande, a Socialist, declared that his “ultimate duty” is to ensure that Marine Le Pen of the Front National never becomes president.

The World’s Most Deceptive Chart
I received an email last week which I thought was worth discussing.
“I just found your site and began reading the backlog of posts on the importance of managing risk and avoiding draw downs. However, the following chart would seem to counter that argument. In the long-term, bear markets seem harmless (and relatively small) as this literature would indicate?”
This same chart has been floating around the “inter-web,” in a couple of different forms for the last couple of months. Of course, if you study it at “face value” it certainly would appear that staying invested all the time certainly seems to be the optimal strategy.
The problem is the entire chart is deceptive.
More importantly, for those saving and investing for their retirement, it’s dangerous.
Here is why.
The first problem is the most obvious, and a topic I have addressed many times in past missives, you must worry about corrections.
“The problem is you DIED long before ever achieving that 5% annualized long-term return.
Let’s look at this realistically.
The average American faces a real dilemma heading into retirement. Unfortunately, individuals only have a finite investing time horizon until they retire.
Therefore, as opposed to studies discussing “long term investing” without defining what the “long term” actually is — it is “TIME” that we should be focusing on.
Think about it for a moment. Most investors don’t start seriously saving for retirement until they are in their mid-40’s. This is because by the time they graduate college, land a job, get married, have kids and send them off to college, a real push toward saving for retirement is tough to do as incomes, while growing, haven’t reached their peak. This leaves most individuals with just 20 to 25 productive work years before retirement age to achieve investment goals.
This is where the problem is. There are periods in history, where returns over a 20-year period have been close to zero or even negative.”

Feds: Long Island Man Accused of Trying to Join ISIS and Threatened to Behead Mom
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A man accused of trying to join militant Islamic extremists in Syria was removed from his home on Long Island last week after he tried to cut off his own tattoos with a knife and threatened to behead his mother, prosecutors said Monday.
The allegation was included in documents prosecutors submitted to a federal judge Monday opposing bail for 26-year-old Elvis Redzepagic.

Government Spooks Can Use the Mic and Camera on Trump’s Phone Even When He Thinks it is Turned Off
After reading this article you might not ever view your electronic devices the same way again. Last year, Hollywood released a biographical political thriller based on the life of Edward Snowden that had one particularly creepy scene. Washington Post reporter James Hohmann was the media-elitist outlier, suggesting that the narrative of this race ought to be that the Democrats lurched too far to the left to be competitive. On Feb. 13, he wrote after a candidates’ forum: “It was striking during a two-hour forum here in Charm City that not one of the 10 candidates for chairman suggested the party should moderate in response to last year’s losses. Indeed, there was no substantive discussion about policy at all during the Saturday evening event. It was taken as a given that all the aspirants are committed liberals.”
Analysts noted that Perez was one of the most progressive members of Obama’s Cabinet, yet there were still obedient publicists like Jane Pauley on CBS announcing, “(Perez’s) election is seen as a win for the moderate wing of the party.” What moderate wing?
Just as the media don’t see their untrammeled advocacy against Trump as damaging to their brand, they don’t see lurching further to the left as a problem for Democrats.

Obama Administration Looks to be in Very Serious Legal Trouble
There is a lot of breaking news this weekend as the nation learns that a sitting President (Obama) looks to have used the nation’s national security apparatus — which is empowered to protect this nation from foreign enemies and threats — for crass political gain (read “personal gain”). Steve Bannon in 2013: Joseph McCarthy Was Right in Crusade Against Communist Infiltration
(CNN) Donald Trump’s chief White House strategist Steve Bannon said in 2013 that Sen. Joseph McCarthy was right in his 1950s campaign claiming widespread Communist infiltration into the United States government.
The Wisconsin senator’s inquisitions of those he suspected of communist ties — which eventually led to his censure by the United States Senate — was a key moment in the Red Scare and led to the coining of the term “McCarthyism.”
Over the weekend, President Trump accused former President Obama of McCarthyism, making the unsubstantiated allegation the president wiretapped his phones in Trump Tower during the campaign.
Bannon made his comments in July 2013 while interviewing conservative pundit Diane West about her book “American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character.”
“Today in modern pop culture, you know they call Ted Cruz the Joe McCarthy — if you want to think of who devils are it’s Ronald Reagan and those who name-names at the House Un-American Activities, the Hollywood Ten are heroes right?” Bannon said. “Alger Hiss is a hero, right? Richard Nixon’s a villain? Joe McCarthy is a villain. Your book makes very plain that these guys were right. The place was infested with either traitors that were on the direct payroll of Soviet military intelligence or fellow-travelers who were kind of compliant in helping these guys get along. A bipartisan House working group on encryption has today come to the conclusion that encryption is vital to US national interests, even as it seeks to mitigate the problem the technology can pose for law enforcement.
Citing the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s effort earlier this year to force Apple to help the agency decrypt an iPhone used by one of the shooters in a 2015 terror attack in San Bernardino, California, the House Judiciary Committee & House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Encryption Working Group (EWG) report explores the tension between authorities’ desire for access to digital data and the increasingly necessary use of encryption to keep data secure.
Fred Upton (R-MI), Frank Pallone, Jr (D-NJ), Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), and John Conyers (D-MI) presented the dossier.
“The widespread adoption of encryption poses a real challenge to the law enforcement community and strong encryption is essential to both individual privacy and national security,” their report reads. “A narrative that sets government agencies against private industry, or security interests against individual privacy, does not accurately reflect the complexity of the issue.”
Amid its effort to find a way to secure data while also preserving access for authorities, the EWG at least argues that encryption should not be subverted for convenience.
“Congress should not weaken this vital technology because doing so works against the national interest,” the report states. “However, it should not ignore and must address the legitimate concerns of the law enforcement and intelligence communities.”
In other words, encryption should not be weakened, but there may be times when it should be weakened. So much for clarity of vision.

Claim: European Union Considers Plan to Take Over French, British Nuclear Weapons for EU Defense
Discussions are ongoing at high levels within the European Union (EU) to assume command of the nuclear weapons possessed by member states for the purpose of common European defence, according to claims published by The New York Times (NYT).
While even organising a combined European defence based on conventional forces — ships, troops, and aircraft — has proven more than the EU is politically capable of and has been a major contributing factor to the impending departure of the United Kingdom from the bloc, the claims are that a common nuclear defence system have at least been considered.

In 1990, the “Gayssot law” was passed, stipulating that “any discrimination based on ethnicity, nation, race or religion is prohibited”. Since then, it has been used to criminalize any criticism of Arab and African delinquency, any question on immigration from the Muslim world, any negative analysis of Islam. Many writers have been fined and most “politically incorrect” books on those topics have disappeared from bookshops.
The French government asked the media to obey the “Gayssot law.” It also asked that history textbooks be rewritten to include chapters on the crimes committed by the West against Muslims, and on the “essential contribution” of Islam to humanity. All history textbooks are “Islamically correct.”
In hospitals, Muslims are increasingly asking to be treated only by Muslim doctors, and refusing to let their wives be treated by male doctors.
February 2, 2017: A “no-go zone” in the eastern suburbs of Paris. Police on patrol hear screams. They decide to check. While there, a young man insults them. They decide to arrest him. He hits them. A fight starts. He accuses a policeman of having raped him with a police baton. A police investigation quickly establishes that the young man was not raped. But it is too late; a toxic process has begun.
Without waiting for any further evidence, the French Interior Minister says that the police officers have “behaved badly.” He adds that “police misconduct must be condemned”. French President François Hollande goes to the hospital to give his support to the young man. The president says he has conducted himself in a “dignified and responsible manner.” The next day, a demonstration against the police is cobbled together. The demonstration turns into a riot.
Riots continue for more than two weeks. They affect more than twenty cities throughout France. They spread to the heart of Paris. Dozens of cars are torched. Shops and restaurants are looted. Official buildings and police stations are attacked.
The police are ordered not to intervene. They do what they are told to do. Few arrests take place.

Germany Already at Odds With France and Italy Over Army Project
THE CREATION of an EU-wide army, combining forces from 27 member states, is already causing confrontation between those most keen to create it.
Germany has rubbished proposals by Italy to use bonds to shell out $5bn (£4.32bn) for an EU defence research fund.
The idea to finance any military project in such a way would be “unviable” according to Germany, Handelsblatt newspaper reported.
A government paper reportedly insisted the move would “violate the basic principles of good budget practices and therefore is not a viable option for financing European defence efforts”.
In the same document Germany reportedly argued it would be unacceptable to view national contributions to the fund as one-time measures to obtain exemptions from European stability and growth requirements.

Hungary to Introduce Legislation Targeting Soros
The Hungarian government is set to submit a law this week restricting the way NGOs are able to operate in the country, in what is seen as an attempt to curb the influence of radical leftist billionaire George Soros.
In December 2016, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that 2017 would be the year of “the extrusion of George Soros and the forces symbolized by him.” It looks as if Orban intends to fulfill that prophecy.

Italy: Tax Revenue Up 3.3% in 2016 to More Than 450 Bn
14.2 bn more than 2015, tks to economy and evasion fight
(ANSA) — Rome, March 6 — Italian tax revenues rose 3.3% (14.244 billion euros) to more than 450 billion in 2016 compared to 2015, the economy ministry said Monday, stressing that “the progress in the revenue reflects both an improvement in the economy and the effect of certain important measures to fight tax evasion adopted by the government in the course of the last few years”. Successive governments have been trying to get tax evasion down via a range of measures including amnesties and beefed-up controls.
Government revenue from gaming and gambling rose 22.3% or 2.654 billion euros in 2016, the internal revenue service said Monday. The fight against tax evasion notched a record 19 billion euros, it said.

Italy: Arcelor-Marcegaglia Ready to Invest 2.3 Bn in ILVA
Plan to produce 9.5 mn tonnes of steel
(ANSA) — Rome, March 6 — The Indian-Italian ArcelorMittal-Marcegaglia consortium on Monday unveiled their bid for ILVA’s steel works at Taranto, saying they would invest 2.3 billion euros in the plant and planned to produce 9.5 million tonnes of steel as well as setting up an R&D centre there. They also vowed to use new technologies for steel production with low emissions of carbon dioxide. Arcelor Mittal of India, the world’s largest steel group, and Marcegaglia of Italy are one of two consortia bidding for the loss-making and polluting plant in Puglia. The other is also Indian-Italian, led by Sajjan Jindal’s JSW Steel and also featuring Arved, CDP, and the Del Vecchio group.
Arvedi is an Italian steel group, CDP is a government bank, and the Del Vecchio group owns Luxottica, the world’s largest producer and seller of glasses and lenses.
The JSW-Arvedi-CDP-Del Vecchio consortium has yet to put in its bid, but it has been portrayed as the frontunner in the competition.
Extraordinary commissioners are managing ILVA as the firm goes through a massive environmental cleanup and financial turnaround.
The Taranto plant, the largest in Europe, was taken from the Riva family after a string of financial woes and after it was linked to high levels of cancer in Taranto, especially leukemia.

Security Services ‘Prevented 13 UK Terror Attacks Since 2013’
Security services have prevented 13 potential terror attacks since June 2013, the UK’s most senior counter-terrorism police officer has revealed.

UK: Google’s Artificial Intelligence Can Diagnose Cancer Faster Than Human Doctors
Making the decision on whether or not a patient has cancer usually involves trained professionals meticulously scanning tissue samples over weeks and months.
But Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer DeepMind may be able to do it much, much faster.
The search company has been working with the NHS since September last year to help speed up cancer detection. The software can now tell the difference between healthy and cancerous tissue, as well as discover if metastasis has occured.

UK: Youths From Ethnic Minorities Get Softer Sentences Html
Young offenders from black or ethnic minority backgrounds could be given lighter punishments under new sentencing guidelines. Judges will be told to consider the ‘discrimination and negative experiences of authority’ they may have suffered.

FBI is Investigating About 300 Refugees for Terrorism
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating approximately 300 refugees in the U.S. for terrorism, a Department of Homeland Security official told reporters Monday.
The official said this was “truly an alarming number,” and added that there are also approximately 1,000 investigations into potential domestic terrorists inspired or motivated by ISIS.
Two terrorist attacks by Somali refugees have injured more than 20 Americans in the past year. The DHS also pointed Monday to the case of another Somali refugee who was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2014 for trying to set off a bomb at a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland, Ore.

France: Violence at Refugee Camp After Mass Brawl Erupted in Dunkirk
A SECURITY guard and four migrants were shot and stabbed after a mass brawl erupted in a refugee camp in the port town of Dunkirk.
The violence between undocumented migrants took place in the Grande-Synthe refugee camp, which is home to more than 1,500 paperless migrants, including Iraqi Kurds, Syrians and Persians, on Friday night.
Police didn’t know why the attack took place but hinted an argument between “rival migrant gangs” could have “sparked” the fight.

Norway: Immigration Minister Slammed for Wearing Crucifix in ‘Vile Attack’
Norway’s immigration minister Sylvi Listhaug has slammed the “agenda”-driven “liberal media” after being accused of wearing a crucifix necklace merely as a “prop” to promote “xenophobic” views.

Riot Breaks Out at Germany Refugee Site Over ‘Lack of Phone Signal’
A RIOT broke out at a refugee centre in Germany after a group of migrants smashed up their accommodation with iron bars over the lack of phone signal.
Two men from Togo and six from Ghana reportedly went berserk at their asylum home in Rees-Haldern, near the Dutch border, just a DAY after moving in.
The eight men were returning from a food shopping trip when they began to complain they were “unhappy” with their new quarters.
The gang claimed phone signal was not available anywhere in the building and complained the camp was too hard to find as it was so secluded.

USA Suspends Fast Processing of H-1B Skilled Worker Visas
Makes India grate again as 15 day sign-off option binned to clear application backlog.
The United States has suspended “premium” processing of H-1B visas, the skilled worker visa often used by technology companies to bring workers to the nation.
The H-1B is very useful for tech companies, because the first 20,000 applications each year by those with the equivalent of a US Masters degree are exempt from the 65,000-visa annual cap. Such candidates may choose to pay the US$1,225 fee to have their claims processed in 15 calendar days. Processing without the premium option can take several months.
Which is why US Citizenship & Immigration Services says it’s suspended the premium offer because “By temporarily suspending premium processing, we will be able to:
Process long-pending petitions, which we have currently been unable to process due to the high volume of incoming petitions and the significant surge in premium processing requests over the past few years; and Prioritize adjudication of H-1B extension of status cases that are nearing the 240 day mark.”
“This suspension may last up to six months,” the agency says.
Technology companies are big users of H-1B visas, arguing that workers using the visa help it to find the skilled people needed to keep technology industries humming. GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving, for example, recently said the USA is rife with “technical illiteracy” in a call for the H-1B to be preserved.
Critics, including president Donald Trump, contend that technology companies bring in workers on H-1Bs and then pay those workers less than they would pay US citizens. Trump made a review of skilled migration a key election promise.

Ambitious Gay Rights Drama Flops
Some thought the show, created by award-winning gay activist Dustin Lance Black and aired on four nights this week, goes out of its way to portray middle America as intolerant homophobes. When We Rise received saturation ad coverage during the Oscars ahead of its premiere this week, to the extent that one Twitter commentator joked that if he drunk alcohol every time he saw an advert for the show, he’d be dead by the end of the Academy Awards broadcast.
But part one of When We Rise flopped on Monday. As a result, ABC rescheduled Modern Family to run just before the second installment to boost ratings. However, viewership of the second part fell almost 1 million viewers from its premiere, netting an audience of only 2.05 million on Wednesday, which is pathetic for prime-time slot on a commercial TV network. As part of a push to promote gender equality, ten female silhouettes will be installed at various pedestrian walking signals across Melbourne’s CBD today. This is not a new concept. In March 2000, I attended a public meeting in Enfield, North London called to discuss the police tactic of “Stop and Search,” which was perceived to be directed at ethnic minority youths. This is hardly surprising as, even then, most recorded violent street crime was committed by black and Minority ethnic youths and “Stop and Search” was seen as a common sense approach to confronting this.
A police officer informed the meeting that the police had received an instruction from the Home Office to “Go easy on ethnic minority offenders.”
When the written record of the meeting was published, this statement had been deleted.
And thus every German will treat black people with more suspicion, if criminals are quite likely to be set free. This will not help integration or any decent black immigrants who have committed no crimes.
