Gates of Vienna News Feed 8/7/2015

EU officials strongly criticized member states for not doing enough to resolve the migration crisis in the Mediterranean, or to help prevent hundreds of additional migrant deaths at sea. Meanwhile, Greece says it is overwhelmed by migrants, and called on the EU for help. And Germany is devising strategies to deter more migration from the Balkans, such as cutting migrants’ allowances. Also, Italy arrested five suspected people-traffickers.

In other news, a rocket was fired from Gaza into the Eshkol region of southern Israel, causing no casualties. A local franchise of the Islamic State claimed responsibility.

Berlin Doubts Greek Bailout Deal Will be Reached on Time

Germany does not believe that a deal on a third bailout for Greece can reached on time for Athens to make its next repayment to the European Central Bank (ECB).

A report in the Bild newspaper on Thursday (6 August) refers to a senior government official as doubting whether an agreement can be reached, and then approved on time by parliaments, including the Greek and German ones, by 20 August.

Since 2007, 1.4 Million Manufacturing Jobs Lost; 1.4 Million Waiter/Bartender Jobs Gained

Who says America has a jobs problem? As the chart below shows, the “New Economy” may pay abysmally, but at least it promises a little to everyone (or to paraphrase a famous phrase “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”). Nowhere is that more obvious than in the chart showing the monthly change in waiter and bartender jobs.

Here is the bottom line: in the past 65 months, or nearly five and a half years starting with March 2010, or when the jobs “recovery” really kicked in, jobs for waiters and bartenders (aka food service and drinking places) have declined just once.

This is a statistically abnormal hit rate of nearly 99%, and one which we assume has everything to do with the BLS’ charge of not so much reporting reality as finding loopholes in the goalseeked model to report that the US keeps adding over 200,000 jobs every month or bust.

Putting this number in context, the US has allegedly added 376K bartenders in the past year, and 3 million since March 2010.

And here is another, even more disturbing way of showing the “New Economy” — since December 2014, the US has lost 1.4 million manufacturing workers. These have been replaced almost one to one, with new waiters and bartenders. Win, win for everyone, especially the welfare state and of course, China.

An ‘Unarmed’ White Teen Was Shot Dead by Police. His Family Asks: Where is the Outrage?

Zachary Hammond was on a first date when he was fatally shot by a police officer in his car during a drug bust in South Carolina, his family says.

At the time the 19-year-old was shot and killed, his date, Tori Morton, was eating an ice cream cone, according to the family’s attorney, Eric Bland.

Morton, 23, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana — all 10 grams of it — which, according to police, was the reason undercover agents set up the drug buy.

The official police report never mentioned the two gunshots that killed Hammond on July 26 in a Hardees parking lot. Seneca police say a second report — which has not been released to the public — details the officer’s account of the shooting.

Denver DA Charges Man With Jury Tampering for Handing Out Jury Nullification Flyers

Denver prosecutors have charged a man with seven counts of jury tampering after they say he tried to influence jurors by passing out literature on jury nullification on Monday.

Mark Iannicelli, 56, set up a small booth with a sign that said “Juror Info” in front of the city’s Lindsay-Flanigan Courthouse courthouse, prosecutors say.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office says Iannicelli provided jury nullification flyers to jury pool members.

Executive Order: “Obama and His Fellow Communists Can Seize Any Resource, Property, Or Person at Any Time for Any Reason”

article was originally published by Dave Hodges at The Common Sense Show

Editor’s Comment: This scenario surfaces again and again because there is a deep and uncomfortable truth to it. The federal government has carefully and painstakingly laid over decades of policy work and special rules establishing emergency powers to take complete and utter control in a declared emergency powers. This includes outright martial law and the suspension of civil rights, and it also includes seizing and directing the entire economy and infrastructure.

Would they really use it? Will it really happen here? The game is already rigged, and the people manipulated. If a good enough reason surfaces and persists, can you doubt that all means deemed necessary would be on the table? Conspiracy theory, or vigilance in the face of a subtle enemy?

Obama Is Re-Introducing Slavery to America

According to EO 13603, the President, or the head of any federal agency that he shall designate, can conscript “persons of outstanding experience and ability without compensation,” in both “peacetime and times of national emergency.” I can hear the Obama supporters now as they will write to me and say, “Obama would never do that, you are drinking from the Kool-Aid, and just go read Snopes, everything will be OK”. Well, here it is, you can read it for yourself.

Sec. 502. Consultants. The head of each agency otherwise delegated functions under this order is delegated the authority of the President under sections 710(b) and (c) of the Act, 50 U.S.C. App. 2160(b), (c), to employ persons of outstanding experience and ability without compensation and to employ experts, consultants, or organizations. The authority delegated by this section may not be redelegated.

This means that Obama, and his fellow communists, can seize any resource, property, or person at any time for any reason, including being able to force that person to perform assigned labor without being paid.

There is only ONE word for forced, “uncompensated employment”. That would is slavery. Congratulations President Obama, you have effectively repealed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

FBI Should Not be ‘Investigating Security’ of Clinton Server — It Should be Seizing Clinton Server

by Andrew C. McCarthy

Politico’s Josh Gerstein reports that the FBI is “investigating the security of classified emails formerly stored on Hillary Clinton’s private server,” which now are apparently also “maintained on a thumb drive by Clinton’s personal attorney, David Kendall.” The issue, however, is not whether Mrs. Clinton made good security arrangements for her private system, or whether the private thumb-drive Mr. Kendall is reportedly maintaining is secure. The issue is whether the Clinton server system or Kendall’s law firm are authorized government storage facilities for national defense information. Obviously, they are not; if the government had authorized them as storage facilities, there would be no reason for the FBI to be investigating their security precautions.

Georgetown’s Bridge Initiative Partners With Think Tank Linked to Al Qaeda, Islamic Jihad and Hamas

by Kyle Shideler

Georgetown University’s “Bridge Initiative” will soon be holding weekly classes to those interested in learning how to identify dreaded Islamophobes:

Students will learn about the history of the term “Islamophobia” and its earliest manifestations; its parallels with similar prejudices that have affected other groups through time; and creative ways to counter it. Classes will include a lecture that introduces basic concepts and expands on the recommended readings. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions, engage with one another in small group conversations, and participate in group discussions to not only learn about Islamophobia, but offer ways about how to respond to and counter it. Upon completing this course, students will have a foundational understanding of Islamophobia that extends beyond daily headlines, and should feel empowered to address issues of prejudice and discrimination in their own communities and beyond.

The course will be held weekly at “The Fairfax Institute” in Northern Virginia. Despite the rather innocuous sounding name, The Fairfax Institute is in fact a school operated by a well known Muslim Brotherhood front, The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).

If I Wanted to Destroy America, This is How I’d Do It

I was brainstorming recently, and I came up with a plan. It’s an absolutely brilliant plan. But it’s also absolutely wicked. It’s so brilliant and wicked, in fact, that I hesitate to even tell you all about it, because somebody might actually act on it, and do a huge amount of damage. One could even destroy a country—ours or someone else’s—if they were to fully implement this plan that I came up with. But you know what? I’m in a wicked mood right now, so I’m going to tell you all my plan, and the consequences be jiggered.

My plan is nothing less than a blueprint for destroying the United States of America. If followed, it would be guaranteed to turn America into just another third-world country, with no economy, no freedoms, and no morals. So you can see why I am so leery of telling anyone. It’s just so dangerous. Yet, as I said, I’m in an evil temper today, so here goes.

The first thing I would do, if I wanted to destroy America, would be to subvert and co-opt both political parties. In a system such as ours was set up to be, it’s only natural that there will be two major parties forming broad coalitions of voter interest groups, and that minor parties would find it extremely difficult to compete. So the best way to begin to lay my plans is to get the leadership of both parties into my corner. Get control of both of them. Maybe I could do it through bribery, of either the illegal, or even better, the “legal” sort. Perhaps for some it might take a little blackmail—some pictures of a politician or two in bed with a dead girl or a live boy. By hook or by crook, I’d get both these parties singing the same tune—my tune. Sure, I might allow them to give the superficial appearance of differences on some issues, mainly to keep their respective bases happy so that my “kept men” get re-elected more easily. However, when it comes down to substantive actions on any important issues, let’s say things like dealing with illegal immigration or defunding Planned Parenthood or repealing ObamaCare, the leaders in both parties will be marching in lockstep.

[Comment: Read it all. You’ll quickly realize that such a plan is already happening.]

Impeachment Article III — Aiding and Abetting

On January 20, 2009, the most impeachable Oval Office occupant in U.S. history was sworn into office with the promise to “fundamentally transform America” into something it was never intended to be. Since that day, he has indeed transformed America into something it should never be… while congressional Republicans have done absolutely nothing to stop his destruction of our Constitutional Republic, and nothing to hold anyone accountable for the demise of our country.

Six years later, our nation is nearly $20 trillion in unsustainable debt — our country is in worse economic shape than during the Great Depression — our nation’s enemies have gained enormous power and influence in the world — our allies have been isolated and threatened into silent submission — known terrorists now sit in our national security agencies, military and national leadership — our military is being turned into a San Francisco bath house, hamstrung by Rules of Engagement intended to give our enemies a distinct battle field advantage — our courts are running wild, well beyond their constitutional authority — the states have no rights whatsoever, nor does any legal American citizen…. Although illegal aliens and Islamic jihad refugees do have “constitutional protections” and plenty of taxpayer funding.

In short, Barack Hussein Obama has indeed “transformed America” in short order, essentially unchallenged by anyone in power… as the American people continue Dancing on the Titanic, aware that our ship is sinking, but enjoying the party as the band plays on.

In September 2015, Agenda 21 Will be Transformed Into the 2030 Agenda

If you didn’t like “Agenda 21”, then you really are not going to like “The 2030 Agenda”. Next month, the United Nations is going to launch “The 2030 Agenda” at a major conference that will be held from September 25th to September 27th in New York City. The Pope is actually traveling to New York to deliver an address which will kick off this conference. Unlike Agenda 21, which primarily focused on the environment, the 2030 Agenda is truly a template for governing the entire planet. In addition to addressing climate change, it also sets ambitious goals for areas such as economics, health, energy, education, agriculture, gender equality and a whole host of other issues. As you will see below, this global initiative is being billed as a “new universal Agenda” for humanity. If you are anything like me, alarm bells are going off in your head right about now.

This new agenda is solidly rooted in a document known as “Agenda 21” that was originally adopted by the United Nations back in 1992…

The United Nations is now in the process of defining Sustainable Development Goals as part a new sustainable development agenda that must finish the job and leave no one behind. This agenda, to be launched at the Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, is currently being discussed at the UN General Assembly, where Member States and civil society are making contributions to the agenda.

Just a few days ago, the core document for the 2030 Agenda was finalized. When what is in this document starts getting out, it is going to create a huge stir among Americans that are concerned about the ambitions of the globalists. The following comes from the preamble of this document…

“This Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. We recognise that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.

“All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. We are resolved to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet. We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path. As we embark on this collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind.

“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets which we are announcing today demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda. They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what these did not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.”

As you can see, this is not just a plan to fight climate change.

This is literally a blueprint for transforming global society.

The core of the plan is a set of 17 specific goals…

[…]

As I discussed earlier this week, theglobalists want to use “sustainable development” as an excuse to micromanage the lives of every man, woman and child on the entire globe.

[Comment: Read it all. Global micromanagement at totalitarian levels. Agenda21 2.0.]

It’s Time to Call Out Black Racism

If we remain silent, the racist left wins.

by Daniel Greenfield

When Obama and Holder gave a pass on voter intimidation to the New Black Panther Party in Philadelphia, it was blatant racism. When Obama and Holder intervened in Ferguson to prosecute a racial agenda while trying to cover up the actual facts of the case, that too was racism.

Obama’s Crony Politics Leaves Your Health Data Vulnerable to Hacking

Democratic donors with a record of getting hacked win fat government software contracts.

It’s the most far-reaching scandal in Washington that no one wants to talk about: Tens of millions of federal employees had their personal information hacked as a result of Obama administration incompetence and political favoritism.

Ethnic community organizer-turned-Office of Personnel Management head Katherine Archuleta recklessly eschewed basic cybersecurity in favor of politically correct “diversity” initiatives during her disastrous crony tenure. This Beltway business as usual created an irresistible opportunity for hackers to reach out and grab massive amounts of sensitive data — compromising everyone from rank-and-file government employees to CIA spies.

Could it get worse? You betcha.

Will Obama’s Legacy be World War III?

Obama made, yet, another speech yesterday, but what made this one different from the rest? This one will go down in history as the United States’ surrender to terrorism. If we have not been destroyed by nuclear bombs, there is no doubt future generations will be studying this speech and drawing parallels to the Munich Agreement, which is regarded as a failed act of appeasement by Britain and France to Germany and Adolph Hitler, a mistake which led to the beginning of World War II.

Charter Challenge: Civil Liberties and the Erosion of Canadian Culture

Since the Charter’s inception thirty-three years ago, our nation has changed dramatically. Due to maintaining the highest per-capita immigration rates in the world, Canada has undergone dramatic demographic changes during the past several decades. As a result, Canadians of European heritage will assume minority status within our largest cities by the year 2031, according to Statistics Canada. Even at present, to label ethnic communities in our urban centres as “disadvantaged” is a misnomer—considering, for example, that homelessness most greatly affects “long-term” Canadians.

One would, however, never know this based on the behaviour of our multicultural leaders, religious minorities, and the human rights societies who support their agendas.

In fact, human rights has become big business since the Charter became the holy grail of Canada’s civil rights industry. Organizations such as the B.C. Civil Rights Association take great solace in defending the so-called “oppressed”— for example, a handful of Sri Lankan refugees who were convicted of human smuggling in the U.S., and thereby wished to gain entry into Canada. They were refused— that is, until the BCCRA decided the refugees human rights were being violated, citing the mighty Charter in their defence. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Arne Silverman agreed, finding it in violation of Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

What about the Muslim lady who wanted to hide her identity during her citizenship ceremony? The Prime Minister disagreed. His cabinet disagreed. According to public feedback, the majority of Canada disagreed. Nonetheless, our civil rights champions came to her rescue. Forget public opinion or the will of the majority—our human rights champions have no concern for minor details— rather, they sided with the tiniest sliver of the Canadian demographic- Islamic fundamentalists.

Islamic State Threatens “To Slaughter Each Infidel” In Germany and Austria

Polish Convert to Islam: “We Will Hold Mass Executions in St. Peter’s Square”

National radio RMF FM has recently publicized parts of interview with the Polish jihadi named Adrian Al N., in which he describes his journey to Syria and escaping the Polish service services before reaching his destination and adopting the new name Abu Bakr Al Sham. In the latest interview with the weekly ABC magazine, the convert confesses: “I will fight and become a martyr if necessary.” He also makes predictions of a “cruel judgement” and the transition of the war into European territory.

He also makes an appeal to the readers: “Convert while you still have the time and before we come to your homes to check your faithfulness to the Only God. If you fail to do so, you shall die like all infidels. Such is the law of Allah. We shall win and come over to Rome. We will hold mass executions in St. Peter’s Square.”

The interview carried out with the Polish jihadi is the first clear testimony of the participation of Polish nationals in the Islamic jihad led by ISIS. The man is one of up to 10 Polish converts who are now directly cooperating with the Islamic State or fighting within its ranks. Polish security services are aware of their existence.

UK: Lord Janner Told He Must Attend Court Hearing

Lord Janner must appear at court in person for a hearing over child sex abuse charges, Westminster Magistrates’ Court has ruled.

The former Labour peer, 87, who has dementia, denies allegations of abuse in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

He did not attend court on Friday, and his defence said he was “unfit” to appear.

The case is likely to be sent to a crown court, which will decide whether Lord Janner is fit to face a trial.

The case comes after a review overturned a Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decision not to bring charges because of his health.

In April, Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders decided it was not in the public interest for Lord Janner — who as Greville Janner was an MP for 27 years — to be tried on 22 allegations of historical sexual abuse against nine children, because of his severe form of dementia.

However, six of the alleged victims asked an independent QC to examine her ruling under the CPS’s Victims’ Right to Review scheme.

David Perry QC concluded that it was in the public interest to bring proceedings before a criminal court.

If a crown court judge decides the former Labour MP for Leicester is fit to plead, a full trial may take place.

Israeli Druze Intellectual: The Israel That the Arabs Call ‘A False Entity’ Is the Region’s Most Stable, Advanced Country

In an article in the London-based Saudi daily Al-Hayat, Israeli Druze poet, writer, essayist and translator Salman Masalha wrote that the Arab countries’ insistence not to refer to Israel by name, but rather as “the state of gangs,” “a false entity,” or “an artificial state,” shows their disregard for reality and for the fact that Israel, which has developed regional roots and has prospered, is leaving the Arab nations far behind. The article, written on the occasion of Israel’s 67th Independence Day, compared the instability in Arab countries in the region — Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine — to the stability of non-Arab countries — Iran, Turkey, and Israel — and wondered if the reason for the Arabs’ troubles lay in the Arabs themselves.

Rocket From Gaza Strikes Eshkol Region

Terrorists in Gaza fired a rocket into Israel on Friday afternoon, where it struck the Eshkol region.

According to Yediot Aharonot, sirens did not sound in nearby communities; the rocket struck an open field just north of Kisufim, and just inside Israel’s borders.

IDF forces are combing the area to find the strike site.

A statement from the army confirmed that no casualties had been reported.

“A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit southern Israel,” the statement said. “No injuries reported.”

At least one more rocket was also fired at Israel, but fell short and struck Gaza, early reports indicate. It is unclear whether what was fired was a Kassam rocket or a mortar shell, or whether two or three rockets were fired in total.

At least one rocket was fired from northern Gaza as a second was fired from southern Gaza simultaneously, Walla! News reports. A group identifying with the Islamic State (ISIS) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.[…]

Articles in Egypt: Turkey, Qatar Fund Terror, Are Responsible for Bloodshed in Arab World

Following the assassination of Egypt’s prosecutor-general, Hisham Barakat, on July 29, 2015, and ISIS’s terror attack in Sinai two days later, in which some 70 Egyptian soldiers were killed, the Egyptian press directed harsh criticism at Qatar and Turkey, accusing them of financing terror in Egypt and other Middle East countries. Articles stated that Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Qatar under Sheikh Tamim Aal Thani, support the extremist terrorist organizations in the region and fund them, and thus “sow destruction in the Middle East” and “turn Arab countries into hell for their citizens.” They called to expand the war on terror to include drying up its sources of funding, and to take legal measures against the leaders of Qatar and Turkey, who were described as responsible for the bloodshed in the Arab world and as dancing over the bodies of innocent victims.

Islamic State Abducts Dozens of Christians From Syrian Town: Monitor

Islamic State militants have captured dozens of Christian families after seizing a strategically located town in the central Syrian province of Homs, a monitor said on Friday.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 230 people were kidnapped or detained, including dozens of Christians, some of whom were taken from a church in Qaryatain, the town captured overnight after heavy fighting with the Syrian army.

Rami Abdulrahman, the head of the Observatory, said the Christians were “either kidnapped from checkpoints or raids or from churches.”

Among those seized were 45 women and 19 children, including 11 families, some of whom were on a militants’ wanted list, said the monitor that tracks the war’s violence through an extensive network of sources on the ground.

Obama’s Enemies List

by Caroline Glick

In President Barack Obama’s defense of his nuclear deal with Iran Wednesday, he said there are only two types of people who will oppose his deal — Republican partisans and Israel- firsters — that is, traitors.

At American University, Obama castigated Republican lawmakers as the moral equivalent of Iranian jihadists saying, “Those [Iranian] hard-liners chanting ‘Death to America’ who have been most opposed to the deal… are making common cause with the Republican Caucus.”

He then turned his attention to Israel.

Obama explained that whether or not you believe the deal endangers Israel boils down to whom you trust more — him or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And, he explained, he can be trusted to protect Israel better than Netanyahu can because “[I] have been a stalwart friend of Israel throughout my career.”

The truth is that it shouldn’t much matter to US lawmakers whether Obama or Netanyahu has it right about Israel. Israel isn’t a party to the deal and isn’t bound by it. If Israel decides it needs to act on its own, it will.

The US, on the other side, will be bound by the deal if Congress fails to kill it next month.

So the real question lawmakers need to ask is whether the deal is good for America…

Saudi Arabia May Go Broke Before the US Oil Industry Buckles

It is too late for OPEC to stop the shale revolution. The cartel faces the prospect of surging US output whenever oil prices rise

The Saudis took a huge gamble last November when they stopped supporting prices and opted instead to flood the market and drive out rivals, boosting their own output to 10.6m barrels a day (b/d) into the teeth of the downturn.

Bank of America says OPEC is now “effectively dissolved”. The cartel might as well shut down its offices in Vienna to save money.

If the aim was to choke the US shale industry, the Saudis have misjudged badly, just as they misjudged the growing shale threat at every stage for eight years. “It is becoming apparent that non-OPEC producers are not as responsive to low oil prices as had been thought, at least in the short-run,” said the Saudi central bank in its latest stability report.

Turkey and Its Kurds: At War Again

by Burak Bekdil

Even President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s critics praised him when, after 40,000 lives lost in a bloody conflict, he bravely launched a difficult process that would finally bring peace to a country that suffered much from ethnic strife. His government would negotiate peace with the Kurds and grant them broad cultural and political rights, which his predecessors did not. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the Kurds’ armed group, would finally say farewell to arms. Erdogan (and the Kurdish leaders) would then be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

But now Turkey is in flames again; the country smells of death. Dozens of members of the security forces, as well as civilians, have been killed in clashes in just the two weeks after an Islamic State suicide bomber murdered 32 pro-Kurdish activists in a small Turkish town on the Syrian border on July 20. Several hundred people were injured and more than a thousand were detained by the police.

Turkish cities have once again become a battleground in an almost century-old Turkish-Kurdish dispute: Kurdish militants attack security forces on a daily basis, while the Turkish military buries its fallen soldiers and strikes Kurdish guerrilla camps in northern Iraq.

US Moving F-16s to Turkey

The U.S. military is planning to move fighter jets to Turkey as part of the mission to target the Islamic State in Syria, Fox News has learned.

The U.S. Air Force is planning to send six F-16s from an undisclosed location in Europe to Turkey after the Turks agreed to allow manned flights from Incirlik Air Base and others last week. This would put U.S. jets only a 30-minute flight from ISIS targets in Syria.

Niloy Neel, also known as Niloy Chowdhury, was murdered in his apartment in Bangladesh’s capital on Friday.

“They entered his room in the fifth floor and shoved his friend aside and then hacked him (Neel) to death. He was a listed target of the Islamist militants,” Imran H. Sarker, head of Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network told journalists. Sarker also tweeted the news.

The 40-year-old Neel lived in the apartment with his family. His assailants had entered the building posing as potential tenants, Sarker added.

Police confirmed the activist’s death, but did not have any more details at the moment.

Thai Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Insulting Monarchy on Facebook

A 48-year-old Thai citizen has been sentenced to three decades in prison for acting disrespectfully against the monarchy on Facebook. Thailand’s royalty is protected by one of the world’s strictest anti-defamation laws.

A Bangkok military court on Friday found Pongsak Sriboonpeng guilty of posting six messages and pictures that insulted the country’s monarchy on Facebook.

He was sentenced to jail for 10 years on each count and the punishment was halved to 30 years after he pleaded guilty, his lawyer Sasinan Thamnithinan said.

Pongsak’s sentence “broke the record,” his lawyer explained, adding that her client was arrested when the country was still under martial law and did not have a right to appeal against the punishment passed by the military court. Military courts are used to prosecute defamation cases against the monarchy because the military government under Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha considers the matter to be one of national security.

“It is the longest sentence handed out for such a case,” Poonsuk Poonsukcharoen of group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights told dpa news agency.

Ecuador Demands Sweden Grant Assange Refugee Status

Sweden’s government would be forced to break the law if it were to meet the conditions Ecuador has set for Swedish prosecutors to question Julian Assange.

The founder of WikiLeaks has been holed up in the Latin American nation’s embassy in London since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on allegations of rape and sexual assault. Assange denies all charges.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño Aroca recently said that it will be Sweden’s fault if Assange is not questioned before the statute of limitations on the sexual assault charges expires this month. However, Cecilia Riddselius, at Sweden’s Ministry of Justice, argues that Ecuador’s demands are completely against Swedish law.

EU Blasts Lack of Action After Latest Migrant Disaster

(BRUSSELS) — The EU attacked member states Thursday for not doing enough to halt the flow of migrants to its southern shores, saying regret at the latest deaths was no substitute for action.

“Migration is not a popular or pretty topic. It is easy to cry in front of your TV set when witnessing these tragedies. It is harder to stand up and take responsibility,” top EU officials said in a statement.

“What we need now is the collective courage to follow through with concrete action on words that will otherwise ring empty,” said the statement issued by First Vice-President Frans Timmermans, EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini and Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avrampoulos.

Four Ways to Help Refugees in Austria

The European Union is struggling to cope with a huge influx of refugees, many risking their lives to flee violence in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. If you want to help refugees arriving in Austria, here’s how.

Austria had over 20,000 asylum applications in the first five months of 2015 alone — and officials expect the total to reach 80,000 this year.

Reception centres are packed, and some hostels for asylum seekers have been accused of inadequate care. The situation is pretty desperate.

Germany Tries to Deter Balkan Asylum Seekers

Germany, overwhelmed by people fleeing war and poverty, is trying to stem the tide of asylum seekers from the Balkans, a region now considered safe at least from armed conflict.

Ideas range from cutting refugees’ allowances, to channelling them into separate holding camps, to campaigns in their home countries to discourage them from travelling to Europe’s biggest economy.

About half of Germany’s 300,000 asylum applications since January have come from the southeast European region that includes Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

In the first five months of 2015, more than 32,000 Kosovars arrived, for example — more than came from war-torn Syria.

Greece: Migrant Crisis Overwhelms Syriza Government

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is due to chair an emergency government meeting on Friday to address the refugee crisis facing Greece, which has been compounded by serious funding problems in Athens. The meeting, as Kathimerini online reprts, was called in the wake of European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos informing Tsipras that Greece was missing out on more than 500 million euros in European Union funding because it has failed to set up a service to absorb and allocate this money for immigration and asylum projects. Kathimerini understands that Avramopoulos has told the prime minister Greece will be given as a down payment 4% of the total funding due over a six-year period. This will be followed by another 3% to cover actions this year.

Many Refugee Children Go Missing in Sweden

Almost 1,400 unaccompanied child refugees have disappeared in Sweden over the last five years, according to the Migration Agency.

Some of them are currently over 18 years of age, but 865 minors are still missing, Swedish Radio News reports.

The children could have gone missing either right after their arrival in Sweden before applying for refugee status, or during the application process. Swedish Radio News has asked the Migration Agency when in the process the minors disappear, but the institution says they lack data on the issue.

Swedish police keep statistics on missing refugees, but their reports do not specify how many of them are children.

“Figures are high, but there are also many children arriving in Sweden. We don’t know exactly why they disappear and we don’t analyze this closely either. That is the municipalities’ responsibility,” says Sverker Spaak at the Migration Agency.

U.N. Urges Greece to End ‘Total Chaos’ on Islands Where Migrants Land

GENEVA (Reuters) — The United Nations refugee agency called on Greece on Friday to take control of the “total chaos” on Mediterranean islands where thousands of migrants have landed.

European Union member states must also do more to share the burden of Greece, where 50,000 people arrived in July alone, said Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR director for Europe, after visiting the Greek islands of Lesbos, Kos and Chios.

“In terms of water, in terms of sanitation, in terms of food assistance, it’s totally inadequate. On most of the islands, there is no reception capacity, people are not sleeping under any form of roof,” he told a news briefing.

“So it’s total chaos on the islands. After a couple of days they are transferred to Athens, there is nothing waiting for them in Athens.”

California Green Party Promotes “Free Slaps” For ‘Straight White Men’

The California Green Party is attracting controversy after posting an image on its official Instagram page which promotes “free slaps” to be metered out to ‘straight white men’.

The photo shows two women sat behind a table which is covered with a banner that reads “Finally! Free Slaps For Cisgendered Straight-identified White Men.” The image is supposedly designed to draw attention to ‘rape culture’, a perennial obsession for feminists and liberals that has been vehemently debunked. The word “cisgendered” means someone who identifies as the sex they were born and has become a pejorative term used by social justice warriors to denounce those with “cis privilege.”

The post attracted numerous irate comments, including from one woman who remarked, “Why is it just cis white straight males??? How is that NOT offensive. Are they the only ones (raping). I’m a rape survivor and I hate this.”

“My rapist(s) weren’t just white straight cis males,” she added. “The person who molested me as a child was a woman, the guy who raped me when I was 19 was black.”

“I thought this only existed on tumblr?” commented another individual.”I fully support the Green Party but someone needs to bitch slap these people.”

“This would be a human rights violation if any other group mentioned,” added another respondent.

6 thoughts on “Gates of Vienna News Feed 8/7/2015

  1. The authority delegated under E.O. 13603 is the authority to “employ” consultants not to conscript them. It should be read in context.

5 U.S.C. Sect. 3109 authorizes the employment of experts and consultants and an implementing O.P.M. regulation permits employment of same without compensation provided the person consents:

    “§304.104 Determining rate of pay.”

    (a) The rate of basic pay for experts and consultants is set by administrative action. The head of an agency, or his or her designee, must determine the appropriate rate of basic pay on an hourly or daily basis, subject to the limitations described in section 304.105.”

    * * * *

    (c) An expert or consultant appointed under 5 U.S.C. 3109 may be employed without pay, provided the individual agrees in advance in writing to waive any claim for compensation for those services.”

Doubtless the president’s authority established in Title 50 is consistent with this approach. I’ll eat my keyboard if it isn’t.

The E.O. has nothing to do with communism or slavery but probably is merely to authorize the employment of the “dollar-a-year men” of WWII fame.

That our present government, universities, and media are riven with communists and Muslim subversives is, however, a general proposition that cannot be challenged.

  2. Africa is a huge continent with enourmous natural recources.

So, what are African states doing for these migrants? First of all, let African states be responsible for African migrants, and let them do that in Africa. Europeans are not responsible for the African continent.

Europe already has its own problems to solve.

Besides, why not stay with people of the same color, and avoid the whole “race” problem that occur once colored people find themselves among people they identify as “White”?

    • People in Africa don’t think of themselves as just “all of the same color”. That’s a naive western notion that’s also been bought into by African descendants in the west.

You’d think that could just go to Saudi Arabia but the dirty little secret is that the Saudis don’t want a bunch of new ‘abeed’ in their country, especially if they’re not owned by anyone, regardless of whether they’re Muslim or not.

    • Quelle surprise! I am shocked, utterly shocked that anyone could think a man named Barry Barack Hussein Obama Soetero could conceive of anything so treasonous. Oh wait. This is all about that famous “leading from his behind” foreign policy.

I’ll see you and raise you with this bit of news:

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3190314/The-secret-ISIS-s-success-100-former-Saddam-Hussein-era-officers-run-jihadi-group-s-military-intelligence-operations-Iraq-Syria.html

      • I was already familiar with that issue, though I don’t remember the source.

“The running of battles by the veterans of the Saddam military came as a shock,’ a brigadier general in military intelligence told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive topic.”

I hope this guy is lying about being shocked because if he isn’t then it suggests a significant degree of incompetence. Unfortunately he wasn’t lying and they were all shocked.

I had just assumed this would happen if there was any sort of Sunni revolt. I mean, if all of these Sunni guys are kicked out of their jobs by the Shia government then what do you expect them to go do? Open falafel sandwich shops? I guess that’s what they were hoping for?

But it shouldn’t be surprising that anyone would think so since the whole occupation seemed to be handled as though they also expected the Iraqis to demand a U.S. style constitution with everyone cheering for the 1st amendment.

And now the U.S. seems to be fighting with itself as they try to remove Assad with a proxy army while trying to fund Iran who will also “fund” Russia and Assad. This isn’t leading from behind, it’s leading with multiple personality disorder.
