The CNN report below describes the growing incidence of self-immolation among women in Afghanistan. The brutality of their marriages drives these women to set themselves on fire. Those who survive describe what happened as an accident, since to admit the truth would invite “honor violence” from their husbands or other male family members.

Makes my stomach churn with revulsion at what these women must suffer both before, and after.
Clearly conditions for females in
Afghanistan and Pakistan are awful.
It only goes to show how destructive Islam is, not only to non-Moslems
but perhaps even more to Moslems. It
is about time the UN thought about
banning this evil cult.
Unfortunately, simply banning the nominal expression of Islam would be insufficient to protect the rights of women in societies with such traditions.
What is needed are alternatives other than self-immolation which would allow these women to actually escape their situation and provide for prosecution of those engaging in this kind of abuse. Of course, any such would be resisted by Allah’s faithful just as vigorously (perhaps a good bit more so) as would an outright ban on Islam.
Is this feasible to accomplish in Afghanistan? I have my doubts. The situation of women in China is often just as tragic (though culturally there is more acceptance of genuine love between men and women, so extremely abusive situations are not the norm, there are still no real protections for women who do end up subjected to such things, and it is quite widespread if not actually pervasive). Does that mean that the U.N. can do anything about it? Given that Beijing controls China’s permanent seat and veto on the Security Council, I’d say the answer is no (even leaving aside their ability to financially blackmail the rest of the world).
What perhaps can be done is to recognize that there is a high probability of such abuse being regarded as normal by persons with traditionally Islamic background, even if they are currently living outside of these countries. They should be carefully watched for signs that they are engaged in such abusive behavior, and prosecuted energetically if caught. That this happens in Afghanistan and other Islamic nations is sad. But let those defending the integrity of European laws first ensure that it does not happen in their own nations.

Islam means ‘submission’, and Muslims are willing to submit to a stronger culture. I believe that the genuine Western Civilization, founded on the Rule of Law and individual freedom, is such a culture.
Will Muslims take advantage of perceived weakness in other cultures? Yes. Very few cultures do not value their own claims over the claims of other cultures. Are you going to propose a war of extermination against every culture that puts its own cultural values foremost?
Then you might find yourself fighting a lonely and losing battle.
