The Would-Be Shopping Mall Mujahid

A one-man jihad attack has been averted in Rockford, Illinois:

CHICAGO — A man was arrested Friday by federal agents on charges of planning to set off hand grenades in garbage cans at a shopping mall.

Derrick Shareef, 22, of Rockford, was arrested when he met with an undercover agent in a parking lot to trade a set of stereo speakers for four hand grenades and a handgun.

Federal officials said he planned to set off four hand grenades in garbage cans at the CherryVale shopping mall in Rockford, about 90 miles northwest of Chicago.

He was charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Officials say he was acting alone.

If convicted, each charge in the complaint carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Federal officials said that in September, Shareef became acquainted with a witness who was cooperating with the FBI and confided to him that he wanted to commit acts of “violent jihad,” as well as other crimes, to obtain funds to further his goals.

The story never uses the I-word, but it does use the J-word. So there’s no doubt that this man isn’t a Buddhist or a Mormon.

This incident, like the OU bomber and other similar cases, makes one wonder: how many more guys like this are there?
– – – – – – – – – –
This fellow got caught because he confided his plans to an FBI snitch. But how about the ones who are lucky or savvy enough not to make that mistake?

Young men of a certain religious proclivity, angry loners listening to jihad cassettes late at night in the privacy of the their apartments… Scouring the internet for bomb-making formulas and instructions for cellphone-contolled detonation devices… Cheering the deaths of American and Israeli soldiers on the nightly news…

How many of them are there who aren’t being caught?

Coming soon to a shopping mall near you…

  1. Precisely. That’s why we need to flood the mosques with spies to keep us informed. Electronic nano-bugs could be liberally placed for audio and video surveillance. And I’m not talking about the government.

  2. He was a ‘convert’ too. These converts seem to combine two horrible attributes. Islam and loserdom.

Now the other day some Muslim convert got $2million dollars in a settlement with the US government because his fingerprints were, erroneously it turns out, found at the scene of the Madrid train bombings.

Now, keeping in mind that hapless security guard at the Atlanta Olympics who ‘found’ a bomb no one wants to see innocent people railroaded. At the same time when you have a problem, be it the KKK in Mississippi in 1964, Neo Nazi’s
in Oklahoma City ( if you believe the government account) in 1995 or the incredible litany of Islamic terrorism from Sirhan Sirhan to the
D.C. sniper, John Muhammed you have to give the police a little latitude.

If you can’t profile based on ‘race’, which is immutable, religous conversion can be a real danger signal. Anyone remember the People’s Temple, Aum Shin Ryko? The Branch Davidians, Islam?

Surely we have to be rational here
and reasonable and it can be a fine
line I admit but in today’s world when a nominal Christian joins a mosque look out! It’s the equivalent of a Marxist heading off to Guyana with Jim Jones!

  3. Scott,

Far be it from me to defend either Sirhan Sirhan or Islamism, but S.S. is a Palestinian Christian, not a Muslim.

    See the wiki on him:

“Sirhan was born to Palestinian parents in Jerusalem and was raised a Maronite Christian. However, in his adult years he frequently changed his religious thoughts, to Baptist, Seventh-day Adventist, and Rosicrucianism.”

    Strange bird, that one.

  4. Sirhan was apparently a Christian by heritage but very indoctrinated into the ‘Palestinian’ propaganda, as this FrontPage Magazine article points out:
    http://tinyurl.com/ybpn2q
Lest anyone think that his acts were in any way motivated by Christianity.
Apparently in Arab countries, many Christians may be susceptible to Moslem propaganda, especially where the ‘Palestinian’ cause is involved. Think of people like Hanan Ashrawi, the ‘Palestinian’ spokeswoman who is Christian, at least nominally.

  5. Baron,

There were historically a lot of active Palestinian Christians in the terrorist movement – the most notorious being George Habash of the PFLP.

And modern Arab/Palestinian Christianity combines the historical replacement theology and old-fashioned medieval Jew-hatred of the Church with the modern Nazi/Islamonazi Jewhatred. The modern Arab churches are truly the worst of both worlds.

  6. Baron,

To their [continuing] credit, Fox News identifies Shareef as a convert in the first sentence of their article (below).

Gratifying to see a local Imam condeming this creep’s actions. On the other hand, he’s sure quick to declare “No one in the community has any clue as to who this person is — he’s completely anonymous.” (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,235688,00.html)
