Islam is notable for its refusal of all things Western… all things Western except its instruments of war. This idiot, while not very useful, is handy for illustrating this particular point. And “idiot” is deliberate since only a fool would think you can extract the bits and pieces of a culture while remaining uncontaminated by the rest of it.

This character trait of Islam, its delusion/ignorance re the dangers of simple extraction rather than creativity and adaptation, is one of the reasons it will eventually wither. Either that or morph into something more compatible with the rest of the world.

Many muslims feel that they need to catch up with the West in Science and Technology. Commendable, but this is not for making life easier for themselves, or that the very process of an education would liberate and enlighten them. No. Science and technology, the products of free minds in a free society, are to be used as tools to wage a war of subjugation. They seem to have completely missed the purpose of a scientific and technical education.

No less a person then the PM of Malaysia, not exactly an “uneducated” man, displayed this attitude in his speech to the OIC in 2003.

We are enjoined by our religion to prepare for the defence of the ummah. Unfortunately we stress not defence but the weapons of the time of the Prophet. Those weapons and horses cannot help to defend us any more. We need guns and rockets, bombs and warplanes, tanks and warships for our defence. But because we discouraged the learning of science and mathematics etc as giving no merit for the akhirat, today we have no capacity to produce our own weapons for our defence. We have to buy our weapons from our detractors and enemies.

This completely perverted view of the sciences, is to me, quite dispicable. Consider, when Einstein discovered the relation between mass and energy, if his first thoughts were -“Eureka, I can now make an atomic bomb and make the world bow to Judaism”.

    DP111

  2. DP111 — the interesting thing is that from the point of view of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, that is exactly what Einstein succeeded in doing: making the world bow to Judaism. ‘

He believes that a few million Jews control Western civilization.

  3. Well, if their poplulation continues to grow exponentially in the Eurpean countries they are now very powerful minorities in, eventually the WILL win. Time is on the Muslims side here. The west better do something post haste if we wanna stem the tide. India has the same problem. If things continue as now, eventually they WILL be part of Pakistan because demographics will dictate. It has all the trappings of a great world wide anti-jihad at some point. The only problem is, at that point, they will also have western weapons and technology. Better to deal with it now, if we have the stomach for it.

  4. Bernard Lewis had interesting things to say about the Muslim attitude toward “infidel” knowledge; if it was considered useful they’d adopt what they could, but knowing about other people’s thoughts for its own sake was a waste of time.  Thus the Arabs translated Greek works of military history, medicine, astronomy and such, but ignored the plays and other works of literature which they did not understand.  This accounts for much of what was preserved from ancient Greece, and what was lost.

It’s the same thing with science.  Any society which concentrates on the military applications is always going to be behind the one which is looking at the fundamentals, because the applications don’t become apparent until later and the fundamentals are essential for developing those applications.  Thus, if the West stays ahead in basic science it will also remain ahead in the rest.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Republicans in Congress want the USA to go down the same blind alley that Islam went down a millennium ago; funding for basic research is going down, applied stuff is the only growth area.  If Islam catches up to us, it will be because we were stupid enough to stop moving forward.

  5. You’re talking about different levels of research. My contention is that the Muslim cosmology stifles curiosity, period. It is viscerally wrong to fool around with knowledge since everything is known.

The US government is declining to fund certain types of research. At no point is it saying that all research is impermissible, just that the gummint won’t fund it. Big difference. I wish it would pull back further so that private enterprise could really take off.

Wherever you have the heavy hand of government — including research on the instruments of war — you have a slower, more expensive project.

It also needs to get out of the R&D on rocket science, health care, etc. Big Pharma is expensive but think how expensive it would be if the government were running it. As it is, the heavy hand of regulation isn’t very helpful when it comes to protecting us from the vagaries of modern medicine.

  6. I can only hope it wasn’t some aspiring Jihadi-wannabe, but a reporter hoping to expose the dark underbelly of…

    Awww, who am I kidding.

  7. Now you will certainly go straight to the top of google search for this particular phrase. I see here the quiet hand of Phase 2 of Dymphna’s “flypaper strategy” of accumulating visitors.

  8. a4g–

Phase TWO??? What was my Phase One “Flypaper Strategy”? What a great idea…what do I do?

Over on Neighborhood I tell risque (sort of)jokes, but I can’t think of what would bring ’em in here besides the Baron’s pellucid prose.

Now you remind me: I need to post over there about using yellow paper to attract white flies away from basil plants.

    Never mind…

  9. > They seem to have completely missed the purpose of a scientific and technical education.

Strangely enough, this is true of liberals, too.

  10. > Unfortunately, it looks like the Republicans in Congress want the USA to go down the same blind alley that Islam went down a millennium ago; funding for basic research is going down, applied stuff is the only growth area. Nothing like a little right-bashing thrown in for good measure, right?

As though this was any different when the Dems were in charge? They kept stealing money for their pet pork and social services programs, you know.

Remember the “peace dividend”, when the collapse of the Soviet Union ended the need for a Cold War military investment? Where’d that money go, you think? Universities? R&D investments at LLL or Sandia? No, the vast majority of it was xferred to HEW and other similar organizations (Ghu forbid that they should have lowered taxes and given that money back to the people — that would be unthinkable!)

Notice that I’m not saying the GOP doesn’t do this, I’m just saying it’s all politicians unless they can fit it into a large slab of bacon they can bring home to the voters and slip out the back of Congress with it…

  11. > Over on Neighborhood I tell risque (sort of)jokes, but I can’t think of what would bring ’em in here besides the Baron’s pellucid prose.

SEX. DRUGS. METALLICA. NUDITY. PLAYBOY. PLAYMATES. FREE PORN.

That’ll get you started. Now all you need is a few nekkid babes as background on your front page along with a few offers of “Click here to see her performing oral sex!” and you’ll triple your hits overnight.

  12. “Islam is notable for its refusal of all things Western… all things Western except its instruments of war.”

By this you mean to tell us that islam is based on violence and terror? You are wrong, I am a muslim my self, and i can tell you that it is exactly as you said, “idiots” follow war and error, and it is only dumb people who choose terror, or kill people in the name of “Jihad”, “Jihad” just means Holy War, which you probably know, but is only to be used when necessary, and also our prophet has advices us to do verbal warfare, rather than spread death and terror. The people who commit terror in the name of “Jihad” are just idiots, who are basically making life harder for other muslims.

Also you said that islam refuses all other “western things” other than instruments of war, and that is rather wrong, since most of the muslim people like and depend on the “western” things, i.e. in islam it is haram (wrong/not allowed) to pay or request interest, yet most muslims still pay interest on loans and mortgages, this is because we are trying to adapt and survive in a new culture, and this means that we have to go by the rules of this society. Another example would be that in Islam women are supposed to be in house and covered in the presence of men at all times, except around children and husband, but yet again we are adapting, and women are allowed to work, in my neoghbourhood there is a very islamic family, the father is a very high and well educated man, who is also a very big part of the muslim community in my neighourhood, but yet his daughter is working in Tesco, this clearly shows that even the most strict muslims are able to flex and adapt into the western community. So it is not all the muslim people who are terrorists and anti-western. Even though I admit a fraction of people are, also you cannot judge everybody on the actions of a small fraction, because even in the western people there are some black sheeps, i.e. the people who made fun of our prophet, i.e. the incident in Denmark, this does not mean that all the danish people think in the same way, that all of them are against the muslims, no, i am my self from Denmark, even though i recently moved to UK, and i know the people of Denmark, and i know that it is only the samllest fraction which thinks in that way. So you cannot judge the millions on the actions of the thousands.
