Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/22/2016

The news feed is light tonight, possibly because of the distraction posed by the Munich terror attack.

Not counting Munich, the big news story of the day was that Hillary Clinton has chosen former Virginia governor Tim Kaine as her running mate in the presidential election.

In other news, three men from Palm Beach have been arrested and charged for attempting to travel to Syria and help the Islamic State.

California Governor Denies Parole for Manson Follower

California Gov. Jerry Brown denied parole Friday for Leslie Van Houten, the youngest follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson who is serving a life sentence for killing a wealthy grocer and his wife more than 40 years ago.

Brown overturned a parole board’s recommendation in April that she be freed, saying Van Houten failed to explain how she transformed from an upstanding teen to a killer.

“Both her role in these extraordinarily brutal crimes and her inability to explain her willing participation in such horrific violence cannot be overlooked and lead me to believe she remains an unacceptable risk to society of released,” Brown wrote.

Van Houten, 66, participated in the killings of Leno La Bianca and his wife, Rosemary, a day after other so-called “Manson family” members murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others in 1969. Van Houten did not participate in the Tate killings…

Clinton Names Virginia Sen. Kaine as Running Mate

Hillary Clinton on Friday announced Virginia Sen. Timothy Kaine as her running mate, going with an experienced politician seen as a strong centrist who could attract independents and possibly disenchanted Republicans — and most certainly the safe pick.

“I’m thrilled to announce my running mate, @TimKaine, a man who’s devoted his life to fighting for others,” Clinton tweeted ahead of the Democratic National Convention set to kick off Monday in Philadelphia…

Jon Stewart, Back on ‘Late Show, ‘ Lets Loose on Fox News and More

When Jon Stewart appeared Monday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” it was mostly to play comedic foil to that CBS host (and former Comedy Central colleague) in a sketch that featured Mr. Stewart soaking Mr. Colbert in spit-takes of water.

In a 10-minute segment delivered from Mr. Colbert’s “Late Show” desk at the Ed Sullivan Theater and that more closely resembled the format of “The Daily Show,” Mr. Stewart interwove his acidic straight-to-camera delivery with edited television clips, fiercely criticizing the Fox News host Sean Hannity and other TV personalities who he says have bent over backward to support the Republican presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump.

Taking aim at broadcasters and commentators who say they want their country back, Mr. Stewart said: “You feel that you’re this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that. This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was.”

Pat Caddell: Donald Trump Running as ‘Insurgent Candidate Against a System That Has Failed the American People’

“He was the first presidential candidate I can think of, in ever, to use the word ‘corruption’ in his acceptance speech,” Caddell noted. “That word, you will not hear in Philadelphia next week.”

He also said Trump’s speech was “much more inclusive than I think anyone expected,” which made some of the negative commentary seem wildly off-base to him.

“The political class is bound and determined to try to destroy him,” Caddell declared. “He doesn’t really threaten their power. The voters threaten their power. This was a powerful evocation of that.” …

Caddell derided the panels assembled by the media to perform instant commentary as including Republicans who were “Bush people who hate Donald Trump, and who, watching it in a bar, root for Hillary Clinton,” along with extreme leftists like Van Jones, whom Bannon described as going through a “meltdown” during Trump’s speech. …

“The thing about the political class is, not one of them has understood this country, and what’s happened this year,” Caddell declared. “I have been on your show many times talking about the paradigm change, the country rising up. They can’t see that. They keep arguing the conventional wisdom that is being destroyed this year, and being turned on its head, and they still can’t get it.” …

Caddell said his favorite line of the speech was when Trump said, “I’m going to tell you the facts that they edit out of their nightly broadcasts, and out of the coverage in their papers in the morning.”

The Washington Post’s View: Donald Trump is a Unique Threat to American Democracy

We have criticized the presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, in the past and will do so again when warranted. But we do not believe that she (or the Libertarian and Green party candidates, for that matter) represents a threat to the Constitution. Mr. Trump is a unique and present danger.

Three Palm Beach Men Charged With Conspiring to Help Islamic State

FBI informant infiltrated ring, authorities say

A West Palm Beach man first talked with an FBI informant a year ago about his desire to travel to Syria to help the terrorist cause of America’s No. 1 foreign enemy, the Islamic State.

Gregory Hubbard, also known as “Jibreel,” told the informant that he had a local friend “in touch” with a Syrian national who was a member of ISIL, according to a criminal complaint. Hubbard introduced the informant, who was posing as an ISIL sympathizer bent on traveling to Syria, to the friend — as well as another colleague seeking to join the same violent jihad.

And so began the alleged terrorism plot of Hubbard, 52, Darren Arness Jackson, 50, of West Palm Beach, and Dayne Antani Christian, 31, of Lake Park, federal authorities said on Friday.

The three Palm Beach County men were charged with conspiring and attempting to support the Islamic State.

Hubbard was arrested at Miami International Airport on Thursday before boarding a flight to Germany, where he planned to take a train to Turkey and then travel to Syria to join ISIL, according to the FBI criminal complaint filed by the U.S. attorney’s office. Jackson was arrested at the airport on Thursday after dropping off Hubbard for his flight, and Christian was arrested at work.

Jackson, known as “Daoud,” and Christian, known as “Shakur,” gave Hubbard weapons and trained him to use them for his overseas mission, according to the complaint. Christian was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm…

France: Knifeman Stabbed Family After Father ‘Scratched Crotch in Front of His Wife’

A mother and her three daughters were stabbed while on holiday in the south of France

Mohamed Boufarkouch is accused of stabbing the woman and her children, aged eight, 12 and 14 in Laragne in Hautes-Alpes, southern France on Tuesday morning.

He shouted “Allahu Akbar” meaning God is great, three times while being questioned by police following the assault.

Boufarkouch was charged with attempted murder and appeared in court earlier this week.

Grenoble’s deputy prosecutor Oliver Nagabbo said: “The husband, and father, of the victims, confirms he crossed the suspect while he was leaving the premises after the attack.

“The suspect allegedly then told him: ‘You shouldn’t have done that in front of my wife’, then scratched the inside of his thigh over his shorts.”

The court heard the husband did not remember the gesture.

Mr Nagabbo added: “It is hard to comprehend that such a gesture could have sparked such a serious attack from a person in full mental health or devoid of any ideological intent.”

The Moroccan-born man had been staying next door to the French family in a holiday apartment.

He allegedly stormed into their rooms with a small knife attacking the mother, 45, and her three daughters as they ate breakfast.

The eight-year-old was flown to hospital in a critical condition…

Hunting for Mars-Like Life a Kilometre Below Earth’s Surface

I’ve come to Boulby mine, a working potash, polyhalite and salt mine on the north-east coast of England, one of the deepest mines in Europe and home to the Boulby Underground Laboratory.

“It is a unique environment to do science in,” says Sean Paling, head of the lab. “The kilometre of rock above the lab filters out cosmic rays, making it one of the few radioactively quiet places accessible to scientists in the world.”

“Some parts of Boulby mine are similar to environments we see on Mars, and so we’d like to use Boulby to work out where the best places are to look for signs of ancient life on Mars,” says Charles Cockell, an astrobiologist from Edinburgh University, who heads up the Mars Analogues for Space Exploration project.

Munich Shopping Mall Shooting: Major Police Operation Underway Amid Reports of Multiple Deaths

A shooting has taken place in a shopping centre in the Moosach district of Munich, Germany, with reports of multiple dead and injured.

Germany’s Muencher Abendzeitung reported that up to 15 people were killed in the incident at the Olympia Einkaufszentrum shopping centre, while police told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that there were multiple deaths.

“There is a major police operation under way in the shopping centre,” Munich police said on Twitter, without elaborating.

An employee inside the shopping centre told the Reuters news agency “many shots were fired”.

Video shows people fleeing from the scene, which has now been cordoned off, according to reports.

Caroline Glick: Turkey and NATO — the End of the Line

Wednesday NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg insisted that the purge of thousands in the Turkish military — including a third of the serving generals — did not weaken the military.

Stoltenberg told Reuters, “Turkey has a large armed force, professional armed forces and…I am certain they will continue as a committed and strong NATO ally.”

It would be interesting to know whether the 1,500 US soldiers who have been locked down at Incirlik air base along with several hundred soldiers from other NATO countries since the failed coup Friday night would agree with him.

Following the failed coup, the Erdogan regime cut off the base’s external electricity supply and temporarily suspended all flights from the base.

The base commander General Bekir Ercan Van and eleven other service members from the base and a police officer, were placed under arrest….

‘Kids Would Rather Steal Than Work’: Police Tackle Underage Offenders Amid a Violent Crime Wave Linked to the Notorious Apex Gang

Troubled teens involved with violent gangs would rather steal than work, according to police.

As Victoria (Australia) is gripped with a surge in underage crime, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton hosted a summit to tackle youth offending.

The move comes amid a wave of violent crimes linked to the notorious Apex gang, who are made up predominantly of young Sudanese and Somali men.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said ‘it’s easier to steal than to work’ for young Victorian criminals

Speaking with many young offenders, Mr Ashton says they struggle resisting the urge to re-offend.

‘We are finding that we are arresting the same young people again and again and again…We’re hearing it’s easier for them to deal drugs than to deal with the bureaucracy of Centrelink,’

[In other words, it’s our fault because recently arrived cultural enrichers find signing on for the dole harder than being violent criminals smashing their way into homes and threatening people with machetes to get them to hand over their car keys.]

McDonald’s Has Stopped Selling Big Macs in Venezuela

McDonald’s has stopped selling Big Macs in Venezuela, according to an Agence France-Presse report earlier thisweek .

The fast-food giant reportedly is no longer able to source the slice of bread that goes between the two meat patties, AFPreports, citing Venezuelan media.

“McDonald’s Venezuela is working to resolve this temporary situation,” Daniel Schleiniger, a spokesman for Arcos Dorados, which operates McDonald’s restaurants throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, wrote in an emailed statement to BusinessInsider.

“Together with our supplier, we are evaluating the best options that will allow us to continue serving high quality food to ourcustomers. For the moment, we offer other menu options such asthe Quarter Pounder, CBO and McNífica, among others,” he said…

Italy: Over 1,000 Refugees Disembark in Palermo

Twenty-two bodies found in rubber dinghy

(ANSA) — Palermo, July 21 — A total of 1,146 African and Asian asylum seekers arrived in the port of Palermo on Thursday, authorities said.

The arrivals included 684 men, 354 women, 23 of whom are pregnant, and 108 minors. Social services from Palermo city council were present during the disembarking operations, and Catholic charity Caritas and some private associations are helping to find temporary lodging.

“The situation is becoming more critical day by day due to the total absence of the central state and the regional government,” said City Councillor Agnese Ciulla, adding that the issue of unaccompanied minors was a particularly urgent problem.

In a separate rescue mission in the Mediterranean, the Aquarius ship run by medical-aid association Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) discovered the dead bodies of 21 women and one man lying in fuel in a rubber dinghy carrying other asylum seekers which was near the Libyan coast.

As well, 366 migrants rescued by the Phoenix ship are due to arrive in the port of Reggio Calabria on Friday. The migrants rescued on this boat come from countries including Mali, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Sudan, Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

Italy Fears ‘Calais-Style’ Migrant Camps

Italy is scrambling to find extra places for incoming migrants amid fears the failure of a European relocation plan may result in mass encampments.

Rome bowed to pressure from the EU at the end of last year and implemented a rigorous system to identify all arrivals on its shores in exchange for a deal which should have seen thousands of refugees relocated across Europe.

But with many countries dragging their feet, Italy has found itself with growing numbers of migrants registered and blocked.

Some 135,000 people who have requested asylum are still waiting in Italian reception facilities to learn whether they will be allowed to stay and given the papers to travel, or will be earmarked for expulsion.

Twitter Has Made Milo Into Western Civilization’s Greatest Gay Hero Since Alexander. He’ll Hate That…

by James Delingpole

[…] If everyone on our side of the argument understood this we would have won this conflict long ago. Not only are we wittier, cleverer, better informed and more honest, unhypocritical and fundamentally likeable than the opposition — but we also have all the ammunition to win every battle we fight because reality has a conservative bias. …

More than anyone out there save perhaps Donald Trump, Milo understands that if the right is truly to win the political wars it must first win the culture wars. And in order to that it has to throw out of the window every last piece of conventional wisdom on how to win the conservative argument.

Conventional wisdom, ie old wisdom, has it that conservative politicians should not give straight answers for fear of offending someone; that their arguments should be nuanced and respectful of opposing points of view; that anything that smacks of radicalism, or — heaven forfend — extremism should be shunned; that right wing politics have to be defended and expounded much more sensitively than left wing politics in order to persuade swing voters that they’re not buying anything too nasty…

Milo, Trump, Cernovich, Vox Day, Lauren Southern, @pizzapartyben, Steven Crowder and all the other alt-right crusaders just don’t give a shit about any of that stuff.

They want to offend because the enemy deserves offending — and because it’s funny and fun. They like telling it like it is because it avoids the tedium of having to second guess their every utterance — and anyway their audience prefers it straight. They don’t bother with nuance because people associate it with compromise and equivocation and wanky articles by people like Brendan O’Neill essentially arguing that actually Good is just as bad as Evil because, well it just is, obviously it is, because to argue otherwise wouldn’t be balanced and fair.

    • They are all ‘good boys’ until they go bad. The media spin is sickening.

  1. The Munich perp was apparently German-Iranian teen loser, german born with dual Iranian citizenship, some sources name him Ali David Sonboli. There is very little detail released on family background or past activities, but there is already a suspiciously lightning quick authorities/MSM spin of this tragedy. They are already authoritatively denying he had any link to IS (how did they prove a negative so quickly?) and are trying link him to Breivik, mental illness, his sorta-German identity or anything else *except* his muslim roots.

    A few examples :

  2. Motorcycle hero of Nice is alive.
Why is his story not front page news around the world?
We (men) of the west are the only thing that can stop these idiots.
Man, I want to bye that guy a drink.

  3. The source is so-so yet reports that Pope Francis, moments before he descends upon Krakow for World Youth Day, is going to make the the migration crisis an issue before his assembled one million Catholic youth. To what ends? To muster them into an Army of Mercy for Islam?

Security is awfully tight in the city for the event. A terror attack against the million assembled is not my expectation. My concern is the multifold reverberating damage Pope Francis’ affection for all things Islam will have as the weeks and m9nmths roll by. Confusion (and misplaced sentimental mercy) will be sown. It’s the man’s way and style. Maybe purpose as one contemplate his paling around with Jeffrey Sacks!

By going to Krakow Poland Pope Francis will (by his signaling and manner) overlay and override all the good John Paul did – on this topic and much more. The simple appearance of it – his very presence in Poland – will be the deed of it.

Krakow Poland will be known as ground zero of the Catholic Church’s submission to Islam.

Why has Warsaw been weak-kneed and yellow-liver about how Pope Francis’ very presence in Krakow, Poland, in itself will become his greatest (and most damaging) off-the-cuff remark?

Radical (that is classical, orthodox, historic) Islam will – through Francis’ signaling – raid and win the day.

In the coming weeks, look for more lost souls and mangled bodies.

I can’t figure out what they have to gain either…

I looked at the wiki for World Youth Day. It’s quite comprehensive…There’s a quote from Benedict XVI – he criticized the tendency to view WYD as a kind of rock festival; he stressed that the event should not be considered a “variant of modern youth culture” but as the fruition of a “long exterior and interior path”.

That’s a comprehensive wiki. Interesting that the North American WYDs have a relatively lower attendance.
