Need for ‘Boots on the Ground’ Sends Mass. Firefighters to Canada to Combat Wildfires

Battling forest fires isn’t unusual for Robin Armstrong, but the sheer size of the blaze he faced in Canada was eye-opening.

Armstrong, of Conway, a firefighter with the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, recently returned from a 14-day trip to Quebec to help fight wildfires that have burned at least 19.5 million acres since early June.

Armstrong and 11 others were the first Massachusetts-based group to head to Canada under the Northeast Forest Fire Protection Compact. That agreement, created in 1949, joins firefighters from all six New England states and New York with five provinces in eastern Canada to control and extinguish wildfires, said Dave Celino, chief fire warden for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.

“We share resources and what they really need is boots on the ground,” Celino said. “You can have all the technology, but in the end you need a firefighter with hand tools cutting fire lines to keep fires from spreading.”

Last month, Armstrong deployed with a crew of 10 other firefighters from the DCR. They were joined by one more firefighter from Vermont.

That group returned after two weeks battling blazes. Now, a second crew of 21 firefighters that left July 5 is in Canada assisting with the fires.

Russian Official Rejects Ukrainian Claims on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

‘You have to be a complete idiot to plan an explosion at station,’ says Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev

The head of the Rosatom nuclear power company on Thursday rejected Ukraine’s claims that Russia intended to damage the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

“You have to be a complete idiot to plan an explosion at the station when you have 3,500 people directly working there every day,” Alexey Likhachev said in an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin.

Likhachev further said many personnel from Russia are at the plant in order to help with technological and safety issues, as well as to work in the development of the city of Enerhodar, which has been under Russian control since March 2022.

He also said that four experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the power plant were shown around and they made “an absolutely accurate conclusion that the station does not bear signs of mining.”

He went on to claim that there are signs that an attack on the plant was prepared by Ukraine, based on “both the intelligence of our Armed Forces and testimonies, including those of captured saboteurs.”

Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the claim, and independent verification of claims by both Russia and Ukraine is difficult due to the ongoing war.

On July 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an evening address that Ukrainian intelligence has information on objects allegedly resembling explosives being placed on the roof of several power units of the plant “perhaps to simulate an attack.”
