Fed Raises Interest Rate 0.25 Percentage Point, But Could be Ready to Pause
The Federal Reserve raised its key interest rate another quarter of a percentage point on Wednesday in its ongoing bid to crush inflation, but indicated it could pause the increases to assess the impact of monetary tightening on the U.S. economy.
The Fed’s rate-setting body said it would raise its benchmark rate to a range between 5% and 5.25%, the highest level since 2007. The increase is the 10th straight interest-rate hike since last March in what has been the most aggressive rate-hiking regime since the 1980s.
Higher interest rates act on inflation by making it more expensive for businesses and consumers to borrow money, slowing economic activity. Many economists have been calling on the Fed to pause its current rate-hiking regime to avoid pushing the economy into a recession and, more recently, raising pressure on the banking sector.

1 Killed After Explosion Rocks Chemical Plant in Newburyport, Massachusetts
NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — Rescue crews in Newburyport, Massachusetts, are trying to figure out a way to safely remove the body of a man killed in an explosion at a plant.
The explosion happened just before 1 a.m. Thursday at Seqens North America, a pharmaceutical ingredients manufacturing company.
Five people were inside at the time of the blast. Four were taken to the hospital and later released.
Family members identified the man killed as Jack O’Keefe, 61, of Methuen, Massachusetts.
The explosion caused structural damage to the building.
It took hours for crews to get inside to look for O’Keefe because the building was so badly damaged.

Antifa Member Sentenced to 60 Months Probation for May 2021 Portland Riot
On Tuesday, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that a Portland Antifa member has pleaded guilty in relation to a May 2021 riot in downtown, and has been sentenced to 60 months of probation.
Jarrid Bailey Huber, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of Arson in the Second Degree, one count of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, and one count of Riot. Despite the felony convictions, Huber was sentenced on April 26 to 60 months of probation and ordered to pay more than $20,000 in restitution to the organizations and businesses he damaged during the riot by Judge Benjamin Soude, according to the District Attorney’s office.

Atlanta Shooting Suspect’s Attorney, Mother Claim He Suffered From Mental Health Issues
The mother of the man suspected of killing one woman and injuring four other people in an Atlanta medical office claims her son suffered from mental health issues, according to multiple reports.
Minyone Patterson, the mother of 24-year-old Deion Patterson, reportedly told the local outlet WSB-TV in an interview that her son was upset that doctors wouldn’t give him the anti-anxiety drug Ativan.
She told the Associated Press that the Veterans Affairs health system wouldn’t give her son — who was a former Coast Guardsman — the drug because it would be “too addicting.” She added that he had “some mental instability going on.”
Police say the suspect opened fire in the waiting room of a medical practice in the city’s Midtown area, where his mother had accompanied him. He fled the scene and officers searched for him for a few hours before he was found and arrested later that day.
Patterson has been charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault — and waived his first court appearance on Thursday.
“He is a veteran and suffers from apparent mental health issues,” said Shawn Hoover, an attorney appointed to represent the suspect. “My team is investigating the details and circumstances of the charges to provide him with zealous, effective, and timely representation.”

Man Stabbed at Las Vegas-Area Bus Stop, Suspect Rides Bus to Police Station
Several high-profile crime incidents reported on buses
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KLAS) — A man turned himself into Las Vegas police after a stabbing at a bus stop — the incident happening within minutes of an unrelated shooting on a bus, the 8 News Now Investigators have confirmed.
William Smith, 55, faces charges of attempted murder and battery with the use of a deadly weapon, records showed.
Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, Smith allegedly stabbed the victim in the chest at a bus stop on North Las Vegas Boulevard and near Lake Mead Boulevard, documents said.
Smith allegedly stabbed the victim once in his chest with a kitchen knife, documents said. The victim then “tried to flag down cars to help him” and was brought to North Vista Hospital.
An RTC bus driver, contracted with MV Transportation, called police to say Smith got on the bus but then exit near Las Vegas Boulevard and Bell Drive, documents said.
Las Vegas Metro police later arrested Smith in front of its Downtown Area Command, police said. The knife fell from his hand at the time.
Smith told police he had never seen the victim before Wednesday, documents said.

NYC Subway Rider Who Placed Unhinged Man in Deadly Chokehold Released: Cops
The man who allegedly placed an unhinged straphanger in a deadly chokehold on a Lower Manhattan train has been released without charges, cops said Tuesday morning.
A 30-year-old man had been acting erratically and threatening passengers on board a northbound F train just before 2:30 p.m. Monday when another rider intervened to stop him, police said.

Jacob Ramos, 43, was arrested and hit with a slew of charges, including eleven counts of manufacturing firearms. His tagging partner, 26-year-old Shelaleh Rostami, was also charged, but only for the graffiti.

Vancouver Man Opens Illegal Store Selling ‘100% Fentanyl Free’ Hard Drugs in British Columbia
On Wednesday, a Vancouver man set up shop selling “tested” drugs in the city’s Downtown Eastside, which has long been an epicentre of overdoses.

A career criminal with over 50 theft convictions to his name spanning four decades has been sentenced to four months in a French prison after being found guilty of burgling the home of an elderly woman.
The convict, named Abdel Kader O. and whose nationality has not been reported, entered the home of his elderly victim known as Paulette on June 3, 2021, while she was in the hospital; he reportedly stole her jewelry collection including a brooch, two watches, and three pendants.
Kader O. was picked up on security cameras installed at the property and was already well known to police due to his 56 previous convictions between 1989 and 2023 for theft, aggravated theft, and attempted theft.

Dark Web Raid: Europol Arrests Nearly 300 Suspects, Seizes €51 Million in Illegal Funds
A global crackdown on illegal trade on the dark web has resulted in 288 arrests and the seizure of around €51 million in cash and virtual currency, Europol announced on Tuesday.
Authorities in nine countries have shut down the illegal “monopoly market” platform, as the suspects arrested were involved in buying or selling drugs through the portal. Most arrests were made in the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, and investigators are still working to identify other people behind the dark web accounts, which means more arrests may be on the horizon.
As law enforcement authorities gained access to the sellers’ extensive buyer lists, thousands of customers around the world now risk prosecution as well, Europol says. The European Commission on Tuesday permitted five member states to temporarily ban Ukrainian grain imports following complaints from domestic stakeholders that the cheaper product was flooding internal markets and undercutting local farmers.

After closing its last three nuclear plants, Germany continues to heavily rely on French power generated from nuclear plants.
In recent years, German system operators have very often instructed some large industrial consumers to reduce or completely stop their consumption during certain periods in order to guarantee system balance, nuclear energy expert Zsolt Harfas told Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet.
Such circumstances arise because the European electricity system is short of capacity and has limited capabilities to import electricity at certain times. Germany, however, accepts electricity imports from France, mainly from its nuclear power plants.

Hungary is Not ‘Pro-Russian, ‘ Says Hungarian Justice Minister
Justice Minister Judit Varga dismissed what she said was a “false narrative” from the mainstream global media that Hungary was pro-Russian. In an interview with news and opinion portal Mandiner, Varga said that these allegations are only meant to undermine the country’s conservative government.
“The Hungarian government has made it clear that as part of the NATO and EU alliance, it condemns Russian aggression against Ukraine, while at the same time we are providing Ukraine with more than the necessary assistance,” Varga said. “Not one of our actions is pro-Russian; this is just another false narrative to serve international interests that seek to overthrow the Hungarian government. I find it surreal to link a pro-peace stance with Putin-friendliness.”
“On the other hand, I would ask: When war is fed, weapons and combat equipment are sent to the front, how does that serve the cause of peace? The progressive forces also want to use the war to discredit the government’s position based on the common sense of the Hungarian people,” Varga added. “To me, this is a morally questionable attitude.”

Hungary’s Attitude is Incompatible With Its NATO Membership, Claims Zelensky
Hungary’s behavior and its relations with Russia are not in line with its status as a NATO ally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Finnish, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian journalists in an interview over the weekend.
“It is a very strange situation: Can a NATO country be on the side of Russia and against NATO?” Ukrainian news portal Yevropeyskaya Pravda quoted Zelensky as saying.
According to the Ukrainian president, a NATO ally cannot be on the side of Russia, which sees NATO as an enemy.

Over 400 French Police Injured as France May Day Protests Descend Into Chaos
More than 400 police officers were injured, and at least 540 arrests were made in France on Monday as nationwide May Day protests descended into chaos across the country.
The French interior ministry estimated the number of protesters who took to the streets at 782,000, while the Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT) union claimed the figure was nearer 2.3 million. An estimated 550,000 people attended the mass protest in Paris alone.
Footage of the protests showed riot police being set alight with Molotov cocktails, while a 28-year-old protester in Nantes needed treatment after his hand was reportedly blown off by a stun grenade.
French authorities confirmed on Monday that 108 police officers had been injured in the violent demonstrations, as well as dozens of protesters; however, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told BFMTV on Tuesday morning this figure was wildly inaccurate, confirming at least 406 officers had been injured, including 259 in Paris.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has gone from being part of the solution to part of the problem after insisting that the European Union must adhere to its contractual commitment to purchase a further 70 million Covid-19 vaccines, despite there no longer being a demand for the product, Poland’s Health Minister Adam Niedzielski warned on Tuesday.
In an open letter to Pfizer shareholders published on his Twitter account, Niedzielski claimed that the further delivery of vaccines would be “utterly pointless from a public health point of view,” as it is no longer required en masse across the bloc, and the doses would not even be able to be donated to support other non-EU countries due to limited demand.

Polish Paratroopers Are ‘Invading’ Swedish Island Gotland for Aurora 23 Military Exercises
Polish paratroopers will participate in Aurora 23 military exercise in Sweden. Aurora 23 is part of Exercise Trifecta, a joint training program for NATO’s eastern flank. In the operation, 120 Polish paratroopers will conduct a mock airborne assault with British soldiers onto Swedish Gotland Island.

Power in Europe is Shifting Toward Poland, Argues French Academic
The military and strategic center of gravity in Europe is shifting toward Central and Eastern Europe, with Poland at its center, says French essayist Guy Milliere. He sees Poland as the main European pillar of NATO and the Atlantic Alliance.
“The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is currently almost a complete failure for Putin, but it shows that there is an aggressive, destructive, dictatorial, dangerous power in Europe,” says Milliere in an interview published on Wszystkoconajwazniejsze.pl opinion portal.
Milliere, a professor of cultural history at the Paris 8 University and the author of numerous books, notes that illusions about a world without war have been dispelled in Europe, and military spending is increasing.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is warning Poland that there will be a very strong reaction against the action taken by Warsaw city authorities to seize the building in which the Russian Embassy had its Russian language school.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of the Russian ministry, warned the response would be “very tough” but did not suggest that Russia was about to break off diplomatic relations with Poland.
According to Zakharova, Polish actions constitute a violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention. She accused Poland of breaching international law and constantly indulging in provocations toward Russia.

Over 1,000 people are initiated into criminal gangs across Sweden every year, and the rate of recruitment shows no sign of slowing, warned National Police Chief Anders Thornberg on Tuesday.

Police continue to search for three youths who beat a dog to death in the French city of Montpellier and assaulted Jérôme, the man responsible for the dog while his office colleague remained in the hospital.
Days after the attack, Jérôme spoke to the press, explaining that on the night of April 27, three individuals approached him in the park and beat Zoé, an 8-year-old Jack Russell terrier, to death while trying to rob Jérôme (his first name has been changed). Jérôme expressed shock over the incident, saying, “She was a very nice dog, very calm, who never barked, and who had been abused at birth.”
Jérôme was responsible for the dog for six months while an office colleague of his remained in the hospital, according to French news outlet CNews. He had already helped the dog lose weight by taking it on a daily walk near a sports stadium in the area and had never had a problem before the attack.
One of the three men, the only one whom the victim was able to describe to the police, was wearing a hood and a thin black down jacket. Jérôme described him as a “North African type” in his twenties with a slight accent common with urban youth.

8 Dead in Drive-by Shooting in Serbia Town a Day After 9 Killed at a School
Mass shootings have been extremely rare in Serbia. Wednesday’s shooting was the first school shooting in the country’s modern history.
BELGRADE, Serbia — A shooter killed at least eight people and wounded 13 in a drive-by shooting in a town close to Belgrade late Thursday, the second such mass killing in Serbia in two days, state television reported.
The attacker used an automatic weapon to shoot randomly at people near the town of Mladenovac, some 30 miles south of the capital, the RTS report said early Friday. Police were looking for the 21-year-old suspect, who fled after the attack, the report said.
Serbian Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic called the shooting “a terrorist act,” the report said.
Special police and helicopter units have been sent to the region as well as ambulances, it added.
No other details were immediately available, and police had not issued any statements.

As Remix News reported, a 14-year-old boy was arrested for a shooting at a school in the Serbian capital of Belgrade on Wednesday morning that left at least nine dead and several more seriously injured. Police were dispatched to the Vladislav Ribnikar general school in central Belgrade shortly after 8:40 a.m. amid reports of a mass shooting by a student.
The boy will turn 14 at the end of July, and under Serbian law, only those over 14 can be punished for the most serious crimes.

Russia Claims Ukraine Tried to Assasinate Putin in Drone Attack on the Kremlin
Russia claimed Wednesday that Ukraine tried to assassinate President Vladimir Putin in an overnight drone attack on the Kremlin, news that drew denials from Kyiv and furious demands for retaliation from nationalists in Moscow.
The accusation, which the Kremlin made without providing evidence, was the latest in a string of reported incidents far from the war’s front lines. Kyiv said it had nothing to do with the alleged incident and suggested it could be used as a pretext for a new Russian attack in Ukraine.

‘Thick’ Russian Troops Struck Down With Radiation Sickness After Occupying Chernobyl
A number of Russian soldiers who dug trenches in the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl power plant in the abandoned Ukrainian city of Pripyat have reported radiation sickness, Russian authorities have confirmed.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February of last year, Russian troops crossed from Belarus and dug trenches in the Red Forest, setting up camp just six miles from the plant’s No. 4 reactor, which exploded and melted back in 1986, causing long-term and widespread radiation.
Well within the 30-mile exclusion zone, troops dug up the radioactive soil and even hunted contaminated animals in the woods and fished in the reactor’s cooling chamber.
The Russians are understood to have spent around five weeks at the location before Ukrainian counteroffensives caused the occupiers to withdraw on April 1.
However, a number of those deployed to the area are now understood to have suffered radiation poisoning, and local Ukrainians have shown little sympathy.

Ukraine is running a controversial anti-Russian poster campaign in the Transcarpathia region, which lies in western Ukraine and is home to 150,000 ethnic Hungarians; however, the painting has been photoshopped and uses some dubious historical references.
What does the poster say?
The posters, which have gone up around the Transcarpathia region, claim that “Russia killed Petofi,” referring to the Hungarian poet Sandor Petofi, one of the iconic figures of the 1848-1849 Hungarian revolt against the Austrian Empire, which was eventually stifled with the help of Russia. The action earned the then Russian Tsar Nicholas I the nickname “Europe’s gendarme.”
Petofi is a revered figure by Hungarians, but the circumstances of his death remain a mystery. All that is certain is that he disappeared after one of the revolution’s last battles against the Russian army.

Geo Barents Rescues 350 Migrants in Central Med
(ANSA) — ROME, MAY 2 — The civil rescue ship Geo Barents on Tuesday rescued 36 migrants and refugees from a small fibreglass boat in distress in the central Mediterranean, taking to around 350 the number of rescued people on board.
On Sunday evening the vessel operated by non-governmental organization Doctors without Borders (Msf) rescued around 300 migrants and refugees including women and children from an overcrowded wooden boat in the Maltese search and rescue area.
The boat had departed from Libya.
Following the rescues, the Geo Barents was instructed to disembark in the Ligurian port city of La Spezia in northern Italy, around three days’ sailing away.
Also on Tuesday, the Ocean Viking operated by Sos Mediterranee carrying 168 rescued migrants and refugees from Syria and Egypt docked in the Lazio port of Civitavecchia after over 940 km of navigation.
“The assignment of a distant port is an additional burden on the already fragile condition of the shipwrecked people and leaves the Mediterranean devoid of rescue capacity,” said Sos Mediterranee. (ANSA).

Although Germany is also the EU’s largest state in terms of population, the number of asylum seekers is still disproportionately high, with Germany issuing 41 percent of all positive asylum decisions last year, according to data from the statistics office Eurostat reported on Thursday.
In fact, no other country even comes close. In second place is France, which approved 13 percent of all asylum applications. Italy was in third with 10 percent, and Spain took in 9 percent. Overall, asylum was granted to 384,245 individuals, representing a 40 percent increase over 2021, when the EU only granted asylum in 275,040 cases.

Germany Plans to Spend €36 Billion on Migrants in 2023
For those politicians, demographers and media outlets advocating mass immigration as a solution to the financial problems facing pension systems in Western Europe, the harsh reality is that immigration is burning giant holes in national budgets, with Germany the latest case in point.
In 2020, long before the influx of Ukrainian refugees totaling over a million, and continuous flows of illegal migrants totaling into the hundreds of thousands, Germany disclosed that it would spend €64.5 billion over the next four years on migrants, which only included federal spending. That sum amounted to €15 billion a year, but the latest data shows that number was widely off the mark.

The German federal government should stop talking about upper limits to its immigration policy, as such discussions send the “wrong signals,” a leading Green state politician has claimed.
Aminata Touré, who is the integration commissioner for the state of Schleswig-Holstein, recently told Germany’s Die Welt newspaper in an interview that the federal government must spend significantly larger sums of taxpayer cash on its migration policy; she also said they should not implement any quotas on skilled workers or asylum seekers.

(ANSA) — ROME, MAY 4 — Italy’s Lower House on Thursday gave definitive approval to a package of measures to combat irregular migration introduced by the government after the February 26 shipwreck off Steccato di Cutro in Calabria that left 94 refugees and migrants confirmed dead.
The provisions, initially set out in a decree law pending conversion by parliament into law with amendments, were approved with 179 votes in favour, 11 against and 3 abstentions.

Ron DeSantis now has at his disposal $12 million to fly migrants to Democratic enclaves after the Florida legislature passed on Tuesday a new measure that helps fund the controversial program.

Tajikistani National Arrested After Decapitating Historic Virgin Mary Statue in Warsaw
In mid-April, a Tajikstani migrant cut off the head of a historic figurine of the Virgin Mary located in a chapel behind the church on Czerniakowska Street in Warsaw.
The suspect removed the figurine from its pedestal and chopped off its head in an intentional act of vandalism. The value of the incurred losses was estimated at around 2,000 zloty (€435).
Officers from the Warsaw Mokotów police station identified a 38-year-old Tajikistani national as their prime suspect, according to news portal Imokotow.pl.

A family of 10 Afghan asylum seekers in the Netherlands has refused to leave their hotel accommodation and move into a large family home located by the authorities because the location isn’t right for them.
The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) found the Shinwari couple, who have eight children aged between 2 and 12, a large house in the Zeeland village of Sint-Annaland.
It was reportedly large enough for the couple to relocate from their current accommodation at a hotel in Rotterdam.
The couple, however, refused the housing offer because they believed it to be too far for them to travel from Sint-Annaland to Rotterdam where one of the children is currently receiving semi-regular treatment for a cleft lip.
