Bank of England Hikes by 50 Basis Points, Says UK May Already be in Recession
LONDON — The Bank of England voted to raise its base rate to 2.25% from 1.75% on Thursday, lower than the 0.75 percentage point increase that had been expected by many traders.
Inflation in the U.K. dipped slightly in August but at 9.9% year-on-year remained well above the bank’s 2% target. Energy and food have seen the biggest price rises, but core inflation, which strips out those components, is still at 6.3% on an annual basis.
The BOE now expects inflation to peak at just under 11% in October, down from a previous forecast of 13%.
The smaller-than-expected hike came as the bank said it believed the U.K. economy was already in a recession, as it forecast GDP would contract by 0.1% in the third quarter, down from a previous forecast of 0.4% growth. It would follow a 0.1% decline in the second quarter.

1000% Spike in Anti-Hindu Hate, Attacks Across World: US Research Report
Washington: There has been a 1,000 per cent rise in anti-Hindu hate and attacks on the members of the community across the world, including the US, a US-based scientific research organisation has said.
It has observed that there is dangerous hybridisation of hate against the Hindu community, citing the increasing attacks on them in the US country and other parts of the world.
“We’ve seen that there’s been a growth of over 1,000 per cent and anti-Hindu slurs are stoking fears of replacement mixing with anti-semitic memes, with other forms of narratives, and hatred shared by white supremacists, by Islamists, and others, and creating a toxic atmosphere of hostility,” said Joel Finkelstein, chief science officer and co-founder of the Network Contagion Research Institute.
Coalition of Hindus of North America
Finkelstein was speaking at Building Representation and Education on Hindu American Lived Experiences organised by the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) at the US Capitol.
“In recent months vandalisation against Hindu temples has increased in the US, and in Canada; it is going through the roof, Finkelstein said.
“And now we see what amounts to a low-grade pogrom occurring in England,” Finkelstein told members of the Hindu American community, referring to the ongoing violence against Hindus in the United Kingdom.

Apple Found to be Major Funder Behind Group Supposed to Represent Developers
The App Association, aka ACT, promotes itself as a lobby group for thousands of app developers. However, it receives more than half of its funding from Apple and its policy positions are suspiciously aligned with the tech giant’s stances, according to a new report about former employees of the association.
Apple is not a member of the association but the group did acknowledge it receives more than half of its funding from Apple. Although, it denied being beholden to the company.
According to critics, however, ACT’s lobbying agendas are closely aligned with Apple’s, even when developers are opposing Apple’s policies.

Carjackings Spike Higher Than 2020 Levels in Cities Across Country: ‘Perfect Storm’
Carjacking crimes erupted in cities across the country in 2020 as society was upended by coronavirus lockdowns and calls to defund the police echoed across the nation. Two years later, some cities are seeing even more drastic surges in the crimes.
“Police departments are absolutely decimated right now. They don’t have the resources or the manpower. And they’re essentially doing triage as it is with the increase in homicides and shootings. You can bind sort of all these things together and you have this really perfect storm,” Heritage Foundation legal fellow Amy Swearer told Fox News Digital, who noted progressive prosecutors in some cities are contributing to this “perfect storm.”
Carjackings in cities such as Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore have skyrocketed in recent years, with all the cities continuing to see an upward trend in the crimes this year.

Don’t Use Conditioner on Your Hair in Event of Nuclear War. Here’s Why
On normal days, shampoo and conditioners protect your hair. In the event of a nuclear explosion, one can be life-saving while the other is lethal. Here’s why you should avoid conditioners after a nuclear explosion.
[…]
The US issued dos and don’ts for citizens in case of a nuclear explosion, and it specifically mentions not using conditioner on that day. Bigger things might occupy your mind during such an apocalyptic nuclear event, but make sure it’s not a good hair day.
If a nuclear bomb explodes, throwing clouds of radioactive dust into the air, make sure you hop into a shower as soon as possible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has instructed people to seal off contaminated clothes and take a shower. Then comes the crucial part.
Use shampoo since it is designed to cling to oil and dirt in your hair and carry away any dirty particles when you rinse the shampoo out. Conditioners also contain surfactants (that attract water at one end and oil at the other), but theirs have different properties.
A shampoo can save your life, but a conditioner can be deadly. According to the advisory, avoid using conditioner on your hair to prevent significant radiation exposure. Conditioner can act like a glue between your hair and radioactive material.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proposed legislation Thursday prohibiting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from continuing its “nefarious” policy of land buyouts near U.S military bases in the state.
The measure limits companies affiliated with China and other countries of concern, including Russia, Iran and North Korea, from purchasing sensitive land around the 21 U.S. military bases in Florida. Chinese purchases of land at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota, reported by CNBC in July, and Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana triggered worries that the CCP would use the land to surveil goings-on at the bases, potentially giving the CCP a conflict advantage and provide insight to U.S. defense technology.

New York City Man and Alabama Woman Plead Guilty to Attempting to Provide Material Support to ISIS
Today in the Southern District of New York, Arwa Muthana, 30, of Hoover, Alabama, pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, aka ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization. On Friday, her husband James Bradley, aka Abdullah, 21, of the Bronx, entered a guilty plea to the same charge.
According to court documents, Bradley and Muthana are ISIS supporters who attempted to travel to the Middle East to join and fight for ISIS. Bradley expressed violent extremist views since at least 2019, including his desire to support ISIS by traveling overseas to join the group or committing a terrorist attack in the United States. In May 2020, Bradley stated to an undercover law enforcement officer (UC-1) that he believed that ISIS may be good for Muslims because ISIS was establishing a caliphate. Bradley further expressed his desire to conduct a terrorist attack in the United States and discussed potentially attacking the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. Bradley explained that if he could not leave the United States, he would do “something” in the United States instead, referring to carrying out an attack.
In June 2020, Bradley reaffirmed his interest to UC-1 in attacking a military base, and that doing so would be his contribution to the cause of jihad.

Plan to Let Media Form Cartels to Negotiate With Big Tech Clears Senate Committee
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday advanced a plan to let media outlets jointly negotiate with Big Tech companies, in spite of existing anti-trust laws.
The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) would create a temporary, four-year window during which news outlets may work with one another to secure better deals with social media giants and other content platforms, according to the Epoch Times.
The measure would allow groups of media outlets to “collectively withhold content from, or negotiate with, an online content distributor regarding the terms on which the news content of the news content creator may be distributed by the online content distributor.”
The JCPA specifically bars outlet coalitions from excluding organizations based on size or political leaning. However, many Republicans fear the plan would benefit legacy media groups to the detriment of smaller and anti-establishment outlets. The JCPA does allow these hypothetical media unions to exclude groups over hate speech, misinformation, extremism or misinformation, among an array of other nebulous exceptions with the potential for broad interpretation.

San Bernardino County Voting to Leave California; Establish 51st State
(CBM) — On November 8, San Bernardino County voters will be presented with a choice on their ballot — leave the state of California and create the 51st state or remain the largest county in the nation.

“We cannot continue to beg, and crawl … to get resources for our county… Let’s step out and be bold about it and let the people decide what they want to do.” Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren told the San Bernadino Board of Supervisors.

Wisconsin Agent Charged in Nonfatal Shooting of Unarmed Man
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A prosecutor charged a Wisconsin Department of Justice agent Thursday with reckless endangerment in the nonfatal shooting of an unarmed man during a traffic stop in February.
Dane County District Attorney Ishmael Ozanne charged DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Mark Wagner with second-degree reckless endangerment using a dangerous weapon, according to online court records.
Wagner would face up to 10-and-a-half years in prison if convicted. His attorney, listed in online court records as Michael Steinle, didn’t immediately reply to a phone message seeking comment that was left at his office.
The charge stems from the shooting of Quadren Wilson in Madison on Feb. 3.
Wilson, 38, was released on extended supervision in February 2020 after serving a little more than a year in prison for second-degree reckless endangerment. The state Department of Corrections issued a warrant for Wilson on the morning he was shot for violating the conditions of his release. He was wanted for allegedly dealing fentanyl to a man found dead in a restaurant bathroom in Blooming Grove in April 2021.
Wilson was driving on the outskirts of Madison when officers from multiple jurisdictions slammed their vehicles into his car and opened fire on him as he sat behind the wheel, according to the sheriff’s office and Wilson’s family.
Wilson’s brother, Mane Morris, said authorities shot his brother five times in the back as his brother was raising his hands and offering no resistance. Authorities contend that he was resisting arrest.
Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett, whose agency led the investigation into the shooting, said two weeks after the incident that investigators hadn’t found any evidence suggesting Wilson was armed…

Meat Ads Banned in Dutch City to Fight ‘Climate Change’
The city of Haarlem in the Netherlands has taken the radical decision to become the first city in the world to ban meat advertising in public places from 2024, due to its “climate impact”, according to a decision drawn up by the environmental party GroenLinks.
Right-wing politicians are calling it a “quasi-dictatorial” ban. The idea is similar to those put forward by Bill Gates: he has recommended a transition to the consumption of synthetic meat to fight climate change.
The city of Haarlem near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, with a population of 160 000, wants to ban advertisements for meat from meat producers displayed in places controlled by the municipality, such as buses, bus shelters and advertising screens, but the legal framework for the measure remains to be defined, The Guardian reported.
The measure, put forward by the green party GroenLinks, was adopted by the Haarlem city council at the end of 2021. It has gone unnoticed until last week, after advertising firms were notified of the upcoming ban.

Meet the Politicians Vying to Lead Italy’s Next Government
Rome: The main candidates in Italy’s general election Sunday to elect a new Parliament and determine who next governs the country include some familiar names and some lesser-known ones. They range from from three-time Premier Silvio Berlusconi to far-right Opposition leader Giorgia Meloni, who is ahead in opinion polls and intent on becoming Italy’s first woman to hold the premiership.
Here are the main players in the 25 September election.

On Sunday, Italians will choose the new members of both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Being credited with almost 50 percent of the vote by the last opinion polls that could legally be published up to 15 days before the election, the right-wing bloc looks set to have an absolute majority in both houses of parliament and possibly even — thanks to an electoral reform pushed through by the left — a constitutional majority.
Such a result would amount to a political earthquake in the European Union.
The prospect of Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the right-wing, liberal-conservative Fratelli d’Italia party, becoming Italy’s next prime minister is raising alarm in the most left-leaning European capitals and across Western Europe’s mostly left-wing mainstream media. And with Italy now having a Hungarian-like mixed electoral system — with 37 percent of MPs elected by a majority vote in constituencies and the remaining MPs being elected by a proportional vote on party lists — the right-wing coalition could even enjoy a two-third constitutional majority just as Viktor Orban has for most of the last 12 years, much to the distress of the left-liberal establishment in Brussels.

Two Bombings in One Night? That’s Normal Now in Sweden.
My country just voted in a right-wing government. The almost 500 bombings since 2018 may have something to do with it.
Paulina Neuding
Yesterday morning, Swedes woke up to news of a kind that has become all-too familiar: During the night, powerful bombs exploded at apartment buildings in two different towns in southern Sweden.
One person was severely injured in Åstorp, where a witness told the press: “People screamed and cried. It felt so unreal.” A resident told Radio Sweden that his 7-year-old had come running into his bedroom screaming, as the blast made their apartment shake.
In Helsingborg, the explosion was so powerful that, according to the police, cars parked nearby were destroyed. It is still unclear if the bombings are connected to each other, or who is behind them.
Since 2018, there have been almost 500 bombings—yes, bombings—in what is known as one of the most stable societies in the world.
There’s not just a bombing problem. There are shootings, too.

UK Lifts Ban on Shale Gas Fracking in Response to Energy Crisis
Opponents of ‘fracking’ — high-pressure fracturing of bedrock to extract trapped oil and gas — fear it will release potentially harmful substances or even cause earth tremors. The government of former PM Boris Johnson imposed a moratorium on the practice in November 2019.
The British government has lifted a moratorium on ‘fracking’ for shale gas — as a solution to the self-inflicted energy crisis.Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg announced the long-expected move on Thursday morning.

UK: PayPal Shuts Account of Group Who Fought to Keep Schools Open During Pandemic
UsForThem, a UK parents’ group that campaigned to keep schools open during the pandemic, has been banned from PayPal because of “the nature of its activities.” The group says that after the ban, it is unable to access thousands of pounds in donations.
“We were completely taken aback to learn that PayPal was discontinuing our services ‘due to the nature of [our] activities’. No prior warning or meaningful explanation was given, and despite them saying we could withdraw our remaining balance, we cannot,” said the group’s co-founder Molly Kingsley to The Telegraph.
“UsForThem has only ever been fully transparent about the organization’s aims, and our mission statement is on a prominent page of our website for all to read. That makes clear that our core focus is campaigning for children to be prioritized in public decision-making.

In recent years, those who made claims about American influence on Hungary’s domestic political scene were often smeared as “paranoid” or prone to falling for “disinformation.” However, such fears appear to be well-founded after it was revealed that the campaign organization of Péter Marki-Zay, the Hungarian left’s candidate in April’s parliamentary elections, said his campaign received 1.8 billion forints (€4.48 million) in mostly U.S. donations through an NGO with close ties to billionaire oligarch George Soros, officials connected with Hillary Clinton and a number of leading transatlantic organizations such as the Council on Foreign Relations.
The enormous sum of money, at least by the standards of Hungarian elections, reportedly came from the U.S.-based Action for Democracy NGO, which Marki-Zay said was given to his campaign organization MMM, according to an investigative article on news portal Index.

Dutch D66 Party Bashes Referendums in Ukrainian Regions on Joining Russia
In the liberated parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions, referendums will soon be held among residents on whether their region should join Russia. This will take place between 23 and 27 September, according to Russian media.
Calls for a referendum in the regions have been growing. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said on Tuesday that it is up to the regions themselves to decide whether they want to hold a referendum.
Russian former president Dmitry Medvedev called it “essential” to organise a referendum so that the regions are able to join Russia if they wish to do so.
More weapons
The Dutch leftwing D66 has reacted furiously to the plans. “Russia is going to hold referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine. The only answer to this can be to reject these referendums outright, strengthen sanctions and send more weapons to Ukraine,” MP Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (D66) angrily responded.

Ukraine War: Russians Flee to Border After Military Call-Up
Queues have sprung up along Russia’s border as men attempt to leave the country to avoid a military call-up for the war in Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin announced a partial military mobilisation on Wednesday, which could see 300,000 people summoned to serve in the war.
The Kremlin says reports of fighting-age men fleeing are exaggerated.
But on the border with Georgia, miles-long queues of vehicles have formed including men trying to escape the war.
One man, who did not want to be named, told the BBC’s Rayhan Demytrie he had grabbed his passport and headed to the border, without packing anything else, immediately after President’ Putin’s announcement — because he fell into the group that could potentially be sent to the war.

Ukraine War: Prisoner Swap, Kremlin Denies Russians Are Fleeing and Poland Hands Out Iodine Pills
1. Ukraine and Russia exchange almost 300 people in prisoners swap
More than 200 Ukrainian and foreign citizens captured by Russian troops have been released in a massive prison swap between Kyiv and Moscow, the biggest since the beginning of the war on 24 February.
The swap was brokered by Turkey and announced in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Among the 215 prisoners released by Russia, there were some of those who fought at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol and finally surrendered in May, together with Ukrainian border guards, police officers and other soldiers, according to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Among the foreign fighters released by Russia, there are five British citizens and two Americans.
“We have freed 215 of our people from captivity, of whom 124 are officers. Of those we have freed, 108 are Azov fighters”, said Andriy Yermak, Zelenskiy’s chief of staff.
In return, Ukraine released 55 Russian prisoners, including the former Ukrainian MP Viktor Medvedchuk, a close ally of Putin who stands accused of high treason in Ukraine.
Medvedchuk, who for years had played as a Kremlin’s agent of influence in Ukraine, had been arrested in April after escaping house arrest while awaiting trial for treason.
“I am not sad about swapping Medvedchuk for real warriors”, said Zelenskyy about the exchange. “He has gone through all investigative procedures according to the law and Ukraine has got everything from him it needs to determine the truth’

Austria’s Record Influx of Illegal Immigrants Could Swing Presidential Election to the Right
Austria’s government is under pressure to tackle its border crisis after 3,000 illegal immigrants entered the country this week, a new record that already surpassed a fresh record reached in the first week of September this year. The new migrant crisis, which is dominating headlines in Austria, is now posing a challenge to the pro-refugee president, Alexander van der Bellen, who is running for reelection on Oct. 9.
Austria has faced a massive influx of refugees this year, registering 47,000 people crossing into the country, which is up from 19,000 in 2021. Most of these illegal immigrants are from the Middle East and Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. With polling consistently showing that Austrians are opposed to mass immigration, and with the memory of horrific gang rapes and terrorist attacks committed by foreigners still fresh in the country’s mind, the population may second-guess awarding van der Bellen with the presidency once again.

Exclusive: Most Americans Believe Migrants Should be Sent to Sanctuary Cities
The majority of Americans believe illegal immigrants should be sent to sanctuary cities, a new poll from Scott Rasmussen and RMG Research Inc found.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent 50 migrants last week to Martha’s Vineyard, which advertises itself as a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants, last week, sparking widespread backlash. The new poll suggests that ordinary Americans are actually supportive of the decision despite the media’s negative response.
Among registered voters, 51% supported sending migrants to sanctuary cities, 29% did not and 21% were unsure, the poll found. Another 48% strongly or somewhat approve of border state governors sending some illegal immigrants to places like New York, Chicago and Martha’s Vineyard specifically, beating out the 38% who strongly or somewhat disapproved.

Kushner Critiques DeSantis Migrant Flights: ‘These Are Human Beings’
Former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, criticized Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis sending migrants on planes to Martha’s Vineyard in protest of the Biden administration’s lax enforcement of immigration law.
Earlier this month, DeSantis sent two planes full of migrants to the upper crust left-wing stronghold, prompting outrage from Democratic politicians. They were promptly ferried to a nearby military base. Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey have also transported migrants to Democratic cities, a ploy which has seen even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell line up in support.
Speaking to Fox News, however, Kushner took a more critical view.

Faltering Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams this week advanced a bizarre conspiracy theory that fetal heartbeats—the detection of early cardiac rhythms in unborn human beings—are “manufactured” sounds meant to help bring about control over women’s bodies.
Abrams, who has been trailing behind her opponent the incumbent Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, made the claim during an event at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Poland distributes iodine tablets against radioactive exposure
23 September, 2022 Main News, Social media, International
Poland has distributed iodine tablets to protect people from radioactive exposure. The country’s government confirmed this, Reuters reports.
Authorities in Poland have started distributing iodine tablets to regional fire brigades to be handed out in case of radioactive releases.
The country’s deputy interior minister Blazej Pobozy makes the announcement on Radio Zet.
This as a protective measure following the fighting at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine, which is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
Iodine is thought to protect against thyroid cancer.
“If you already have iodine in your body, your thyroid gland will not absorb the radioactive iodine from a release,” reads the Swedish krisinformation.se.
– I want to assure all citizens that these are routine, preventive measures to protect us in the event of a situation that I hope will not occur,” the Polish minister said during the radio interview, according to Reuters.
At the same time, there is a nuclear threat in the war in neighbouring Ukraine, which is not diminishing.
This threat prompted people in former Soviet states to stock up on iodine at home even earlier during the war, Reuters writes.
Yesterday, Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev made it clear that Russia is not ruling out the use of strategic nuclear weapons because of the conflict in Ukraine.
“Referendums will be held and the Donbass republics and other territories will be accepted into Russia. The defense of all territories that joined will be significantly strengthened by the Russian Defense Forces. Russia has announced that not only mobilization capabilities, but also that all Russian weapons, including strategic nuclear weapons and weapons based on new principles, can be used for such protection,” Medvedev writes on Telegram.
