EU Bread Prices Soaring

Household food bills across the EU have been rising dramatically in recent months, as galloping inflation keeps fueling the prices for important staple foods, with bread now costing more than ever.

In August, the price of bread in the bloc was on average 18% higher compared to the same period a year ago, according to data released by the EU’s statistical office Eurostat on Monday.

“This is a huge increase compared with August 2021, when the price of bread was on average 3% higher than in August 2020,” Eurostat said.

Gap Slashes Hundreds of Jobs as Inflation Squeezes the Struggling Giant

Gap will eliminate nearly 500 corporate jobs, joining other struggling retailers as the industry sees a post-pandemic slump and battles high inflation, a Gap spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The layoffs will occur primarily at the retail giant’s corporate offices in New York, San Francisco and Asia, anonymous sources told The Wall Street Journal, who originally reported on the layoffs. Gap’s cuts follow a string of corporate layoffs across all sectors of the economy: in July, 7— Eleven cut 880 corporate employees and online retailer Shopify laid off around 1,000 employees, in August, Walmart let go 200 corporate employees and Ford announced plans to let go nearly 2000 white-collar workers, while Goldman Sachs is expected to fire around 500 employees this fall.

Majority of Hungarian Gas Stations to Run Dry Next Week

Hungarian gas and oil giant MOL will only be able to deliver a quarter of the needed fuel from 19 September, Hungarian media reported.

According to Daily News Hungary. Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu acquired a letter in which MOL informed its partners that they could only deliver 25% of the contracted fuel amount. The cited reason for shortfall is “to maintain the predictability of fuel orders and the supply in Hungary, MOL explaned. The oil and gas giant’s announcement concerns gasoline and diesel deliveries, too.”

Similar to other European countries, the Hungarian government decided to maintain price caps on fuel and essential foodstuffs until the end of this year. Regarding the possible fuel shortage, Gergely Gulyas, the prime minister’s chief of staff, said on yesterday’s government info that “there might be problems at the petrol stations.”

However, they trust in the sustainability of their decisions. Gulyas added that people could thank MOL that the government can maintain the fuel price cap scheme. As a result, gasoline and diesel prices will remain at HUF 480 per litre (EUR 1.19/l) in Hungary until 31 December. Of course, the trade off is that soon there will be no gasoline and diesel.

Truss: New British Govt Hints Real Tax Cuts Coming to Ease Cost of Living Crisis

Speaking from New York where she is attending the United Nations, new UK Prime Minister Liz Truss heavily hinted there would be tax cuts coming this week, and that these were being done to grow the economy, not please people with ideological opposition to tax cuts.

Tax cuts help generate economic growth, the Prime Minister said on Tuesday, as she makes her first official trip abroad as leader to the United Nations’ General Assembly in New York. Speaking about the government’s emergency budget being presented to the Commons on Friday, PM Liz Truss strongly implied that tax cuts would be coming and while some would disapprove of them, the government did not care for their opinion on economics.

9 Key Cases Supreme Court Will Hear in 2022-23 Session

It will be tough—if not impossible—for the Supreme Court to top the 2021-22 term when it comes to both drama and results that pleased the conservative legal community (not to mention conservatives in general).

As I wrote elsewhere in July at the end of the term, “[t]he three words that best describe the Supreme Court’s decisions this term are text, history, and tradition. If that’s one word too many, try this: Originalism Rules! And that’s a good thing.”

But for SCOTUS fans—and who isn’t one?—there will be plenty of excitement during the term that begins on Oct. 3.

On Sept. 27, my Heritage Foundation colleague Zack Smith will host our Supreme Court preview of the 2022-23 term with former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement and former acting U.S. Solicitor General Jeff Wall. You can register for the event here. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

Although the Supreme Court will no doubt agree to hear more cases following its “long conference” when it considers the certiorari petitions that were filed during the summer, there are already several big cases on its docket for what promises to be another blockbuster term. Here’s a brief description of a few of them.

Driver Admitted to Intentionally Killing Teen at North Dakota Street Dance After Political Dispute

Court papers say 41-year-old Shannon Brandt confessed to a 911 dispatcher and police that he killed 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson due to a political dispute.

McHENRY, N.D. — According to court papers, it was not an accident but apparently a politically motivated attack.

The fatal vehicle-pedestrian incident happened early Sunday morning, Sept. 18, in McHenry, North Dakota, about 120 miles northwest of Fargo and 54 miles north of Jamestown.

Prosecutors allege moments before he was killed, 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson called his mom to come rescue him because 41-year-old Shannon Brandt was chasing him in the city of McHenry, where the street dance had just wrapped up.

By the time she could get there, her son was dead.

Brandt was officially charged Monday with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

“He was the one who called 911 to report the crash,” said North Dakota Highway Patrol Capt. Bryan Niewind.

Court papers show Brandt called 911 around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and told the 911 dispatcher that he just hit Ellingson, claiming the teen was part of a Republican extremist group and was calling people to come get Brandt after a political argument.

Ellingson’s mom told police her son called her just before the crash, asking if she knew Brandt, which she does. She does not believe her son knew him.

It’s Crazy on Many Levels, But Cook County Has Launched Its ‘Free Money’ UBI Program

Authored by Mark Glennon, co-founder of Wirepoints.org

Teach a man to fish and he will still just eat the fish given away free.”

—Socrates

Socrates didn’t really say that. I just made it up.

I made it up because some wise man should have famously said it for the sake of those who seem oblivious to that fundamental aspect of human nature.

Among the oblivious are Cook County Board President Tony Preckwinkle and the rest of her board. Last week she announced the county’s version of what’s often called UBI — universal basic income. Under the program, the county will send monthly payments of $500 to $3,250 to its residents who successfully apply for two years. At $42 million, it’s “the largest publicly-funded guaranteed income initiative in American history,” Preckwinkle says.

UBI programs are sometimes called “free money” programs, as in this column describing 13 similar programs in certain cities around the nation. “Free money” is a fair label because that’s exactly the point — to make cash handouts with no strings attached: no work, disability or training enrollment requirements, no regard for how much the recipient is getting from other assistance program and no real questions other than household income.

Eligibility is open to anybody 18 or older with a household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level — or about $58,000 for a family of three. About 36% of all Cook County residents will therefore be eligible, Preckwinkle says.

Panel Splits Decision on Parole for Heath High School Shooter Michael Carneal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Kentucky man who killed three students and wounded five more in a school shooting 25 years ago will have to wait another week to learn his fate in a high-stakes hearing that could see him released or denied the chance to ever leave prison.

Michael Carneal was a 14-year-old freshman on Dec. 1, 1997, when he fired a stolen pistol at a before-school prayer group in the lobby of Heath High School, near Paducah, Kentucky. He opened fire on a prayer group killing three students and injuring five others.

Carneal was given the maximum sentence possible at the time for someone his age — life in prison but with the possibility of parole. Now at age 39, Carneal is trying to convince the parole board he deserves to be freed.

At a hearing on Tuesday, a two-person panel of the Kentucky Parole Board said they were referring his case to the full board, which meets on Monday, Sept. 26. Only the full board has the power to order Carneal to serve out his full sentence without another chance at parole.

During the hearing, Carneal pleaded his case for release. “I’ve had 25 years to prepare for today, and it still doesn’t seem like it’s happening.”

Carneal said he has been diagnosed with several mental health issues, and he admits he has long heard voices in his head — including the day of the shooting in 1997.

Pennsylvania County Sued Over Illegal Ballot Drop Box Usage Captured on Camera

Authored by Bill Pan via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours)

A conservative legal group is suing the board of elections in Pennsylvania’s Chester County, citing surveillance camera footage that captured the illegal use of ballot drop boxes.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday by America First Legal (AFL) on behalf of registered voters in Chester County. The group, founded by longtime Donald Trump adviser Stephen Miller, said this is meant to ensure that the board adheres to Pennsylvania’s election law regarding ballot drop boxes prior to this November’s election.

Under Pennsylvania’s election code, mailed and absentee ballots have to be returned either by mail or in person by the person to whom the ballot belongs, meaning one person cannot drop more than one ballot in a drop box.

Uncool: Biden Pushes Senate to Ratify Treaty That Would Raise Cost of Air Conditioning

After a hot summer with utility bills rising, reasonable people would think that President Joe Biden would want to keep air conditioning costs low for Americans.

But the Senate is poised to vote on a climate treaty that would raise those costs and put yet another notch in the belt of Biden’s whole-of-government, whole-of-the-economy climate agenda.

In his first week as president, Biden issued Executive Order 14008, “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad.” Among the many regulatory actions it initiated, Biden’s order also directed his administration to pursue the Senate’s ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the U.N. Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

US is Set to Audit Its Online Manipulation Campaigns

Last week, Colin Kahl, the undersecretary of defense for policy, ordered a report of the online influence operations by the military for a review by the White House by October, in what appears to be an effort by the Biden administration to stop or, at the very least, account for the extent of such operations — according to a report by The Washington Post.

Back in 2020, The Post reported that Twitter and Facebook employees warned the Pentagon of the existence of fake accounts suspected to be created by the US military. A Facebook executive contacted the Pentagon’s head of influence operations policy, Christopher Miller, about the accounts, noting that foreign adversaries are likely to know the origins of the accounts, given that Facebook employees were able to.

The two social media platforms removed about 150 fake profiles, some masquerading as media outlets, that they suspected were created by the military for psychological operations, aka psyops. The US has long accused Russia and China of such operations.

Video: Biden Proclaims “There’s a Through Line of Hate” In American History

He continued, “The terror of the clan, to anti-immigration violence against the Irish, Italians, Chinese, Mexicans. So many of those laced through our history.”

“There’s a through line of violence against religious groups anti semitic, anti Catholic, anti Mormon, anti Muslim, anti Hindu, anti Sikh,” Biden further asserted.

Biden vowed to expose “hate-fueled violence”, directly citing Trump supporters and conservatives in general.

German Domestic Intelligence is Running Hundreds of Fake Right-Wing Extremist Social Media Accounts

Hundreds of the radical Nazis and right-wing extremists online are actually German domestic intelligence agents, and many of them may even responsible for “inciting hatred” and even violence. These agents, who once needed to drink and directly socialize with members of the extreme right, are now running right-wing extremist accounts online in Germany.

Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) argues that these accounts are needed to gather information, but critics say that they may also be promoting and actively encouraging radicalism, according to a report from German newspaper Süddeutshce Zeitung.

Italy Elections: Far-Right Meloni Scents Power in a Divided Country

Elections may be around the corner, but at the Ballarò market in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, the passions are not political but culinary.

Calls ring out from traders slicing fresh calamari or tempting passers-by with the delicious local speciality: arancini, or fried balls of rice and meat.

But there is little appetite for politicians here. Wandering through the narrow stalls, most of those we asked said they would not vote in the election next Sunday: disappointment, disillusionment, and dishonesty were the words we heard repeatedly.

Piling up ripe oranges and pomegranates outside her cafe, Sonia Capizzi was a rare exception: she has boycotted elections until now, but this time is different.

“I can see things are changing and it’s down to Giorgia Meloni,” she says, referencing the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, who tops the opinion polls.

“She’s drawing me in because she’s a woman, a mum, and has grit and charisma.”

Social conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI) leader Giorgia Meloni has declared she is ready to govern as Italy’s first female prime minister, but accused the left-wing opposition of publishing “fake news” on an “unprecedented level.”

Just a week before next weekend’s Italian national election, Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni has stated she is ready to become the country’s first female prime minister ever, stating that her first priority as leader of the Italian government will be to tackle the energy crisis driving up costs for Italian consumers and businesses.

Poland and Hungary Agreed to Drop Their Veto Rights in 2020, And Now They Can’t Get Funds, Says Poland’s Right-Wing Confederation Leader

One of the leaders of the Polish right-wing party Confederation and former presidential candidate MP Krzysztof Bosak, blames both the Polish and Hungarian governments for having failed to veto the conditionality mechanism during the debate over the EU budget. This mechanism was activated on Sunday by the European Commission against Hungary. €7.5 billion, equalling 65 percent of the money that was supposed to be allocated to Hungary, will be blocked pending confirmation of the decision in a qualified majority vote in the European Council.

Commenting on the commission’s decision on Hungary, Bosak called it hypocritical but opined that the root of the problem was that Poland and Hungary had allowed the conditionality mechanism through, which basically makes EU funds conditional on following what Brussels wants, giving EU institutions tremendous leverage over conservative governments.

Occupied Ukrainian Regions Push Votes to Join Russia in Wake of Counteroffensives

Kremlin-controlled areas of southern and eastern Ukraine announced Tuesday they would stage votes this week on formally joining Russia, moves that were cheered in Moscow and dismissed by Kyiv and its allies as a desperate attempt to stem the tide of a successful counteroffensive by Ukrainian troops.

President Vladimir Putin meanwhile urged defense industry chiefs to boost military production and Russia’s parliament approved a bill to toughen punishments for a host of crimes, including desertion, if they are committed during periods of mobilization or martial law.

The sudden flurry of activity signaled that the Kremlin could be preparing to dramatically intensify its efforts in a conflict that has dragged on for nearly seven months and recently tilted away from its forces. Its public backers delighted in the prospect of an “all-out war” and a new confrontation with the West, which warned holding “sham” votes in those areas would represent an illegal escalation.

Ukraine War: Occupied Areas Call Urgent Vote to Join Russia

Four areas of Ukraine under Moscow’s control have announced plans for urgent so-called referendums on joining Russia, which would pave the way for Russian annexation.

Russia’s invasion has stalled in recent months and Ukraine has recaptured swathes of territory in the north-east.

Now Russian-backed officials in the east and south say they want votes on joining Russia starting this week.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, after a vote drew international condemnation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had been expected to give an address to the nation on Tuesday evening but sources close to the Kremlin indicated later that it had been postponed, with no reason given.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to exchange 200 prisoners.

Erdogan told PBS that the deal was a “significant” step forward but did not provide any further details about the agreement.

Erdogan, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin last week in Uzbekistan, has said the Kremlin “wants to end the war as soon as possible”.

The Turkish president has managed to maintain ties with Moscow and Kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.

Ankara has regularly offered to mediate in the conflict “to find a deal that satisfies everyone” and returns Crimea and occupied territories to Ukraine.

Erdogan is due to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Extinction Rebellion is Planning to Disrupt a Major Adelaide Event

“This is serious”

A showdown looms as environmental group Extinction Rebellion prepares to blockade an important industry event, reports David Penberthy.

“October 17-19 the Adelaide Convention Centre is playing host to the Asia-Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition. In the eyes of the rebels as they call themselves… this is a red rag to a bull.

“This is serious because these are major industries and as far as Extinction Rebellion is concerned they should cease to exist forthwith. It’s potentially going to be quite the showdown…”

First Martha’s Vineyard, Now Joe’s Backyard! Delaware Readies for Surprise Influx of Migrants After Plane Used by DeSantis to Drop Venezuelans in Martha’s Vineyard Prepares to Touch Down

Delaware’s Governor has said they are ‘preparing’ for any migrants that may be sent to Biden’s home state by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — as the plane which was flown into Martha’s Vineyard heads towards Georgetown airport.

He sent 50 migrants to affluent Martha’s Vineyard, and now appears that he is sending the Ultimate Air Shuttle to Georgetown, close to President Biden’s Rehoboth home.

The 11,110 Afghan Migrants Born on Jan 1

by Daniel Greenfield

The Biden administration brought tens of thousands of Afghans into our communities who were never properly vetted and who may not have had proper documentation to show who they are.

Last September, Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas claimed that “the federal government has been focused on the screening and vetting of individuals evacuated from Afghanistan” and that the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, the Department of Defense and the FBI had “established a robust screening and vetting architecture” for the masses of Afghan migrants that Biden had brought to this country.

But the latest report from the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security reveals that the vetting of the migrants was so lacking in even basic information that 36,400 Afghans carried an unidentified document and at least 11,110 had fake birthdays.

659 of the Afghans were either missing a first or a last name. Worse still, even many of the Afghan migrants with recorded names may not be accurate. The report reveals that customs officials “had to rely on translators or interpreters to identify evacuees’ names”. Despite the claims of a robust vetting system, the process was as crude and low tech as it gets with officials using “photographs of handwritten flight manifests” as the basis for entering the names.

It would be hard to imagine a more inaccurate way to obtain any reliable information.

15-Year-Old Intruder Continues Stabbing Woman as She Flees Her Home, Utah Cops Say

A Taylorsville couple woke just before 4 a.m. to find a 15-year-old intruder in their home, Utah police told news outlets.

The teen began stabbing the couple before the woman escaped to a neighbor’s house and called 911 on Tuesday, Sept. 20, police told KTVX.

As she fled, the 15-year-old chased her and continued stabbing her, KSL reported. The man also called 911 from inside the home. Police later arrested the 15-year-old nearby.

“At this point, we believe it’s just a completely random act,” Sgt. Jake Hill of Taylorsville police told The Salt Lake Tribune. The teen has no connection to the couple or their home.

The man and woman, in their 30s or 40s, were taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, KSL reported.

Ad-Blocker Adguard Struggles With Google’s Extension Rules

It was clear even when it was first announced in a paper in 2018 that Google’s Manifest V3, a new extension API for Chrome, would present a big problem for developers of extensions designed to block ads, but also trackers and certain types of malware — and for users who want improved privacy and control over their browsing experience.

Manifest V3 was first incorporated into Chrome 88 and released in January 2021. Since early 2022, new extensions using Manifest V2 are no longer accepted in the Chrome Web Store, and the last part of the phasing out of this API, which will break all extensions based on it, is expected to take place by January 2023.

5 thoughts on “Gates of Vienna News Feed 9/20/2022

  1. Biden’s lateness. Anyone who has been a parent knows how your child having a poo in their nappy/diaper just as you are about to leave the house causes a lot of chaos. Biden may have pooed his diaper?.

  2. Oh what a tangled web we weave….

Concerning the Martha’s Vineyard kerfuffle – One gets the impression, though I haven’t seen it stated explicitly, that these economic sojourners had previous contact with ICE and ergo are lawful residents until adjudication of their “asylum/refugee” claims. That being the case, by what lawful authority were they removed from Martha’s (a white cis-hetero-normative colonizer oppressor) Vineyard? Were they told they were under arrest and “Mirandized”? Was it made clear to them that they 1) did not legally have to leave the Vineyard and 2) they are free to leave the NG facilities they now occupy when ever they want? But not to return to MV.

I understand the ambulance chasers are looking to make bank by suing DeSantis et.al. but it would appear MV and the state of Mass. also have accrued considerable exposer vis-à-vis civil rights violations, something other misery profiteers will hopefully soon sniff out. Do we not have a Civil Rights Division within the DoJ? Where is Saul Alinsky when you need him? hint – out back shootin’ dialectic craps with Karl and Friedrich.

Also, one MV official offered up the excuse that there was no housing or employment for them. The first is laughable, a cursory scan of the internet turns up dozens of rooms available, and their immediate deportation under color of law renders the latter moot in that they were excluded by city/state government from participating in the labor market (is that legal in the U.S.?). As an educated guess I would say at least half would have found employment, by underbidding the locals by $5 to $10 an hour, had they been allowed to compete in the labor market. But, then again, now they’ll be degrading the labor market among deplorables “over there” and so it’s all good.

In Book II, Chp VII of Dickens’ “Tale of Two Cities” we find the most superb description of our rulers and their courtiers, their moral foundation – “The earth and the fulness thereof are mine, saith Monseigneur.”, and our place in their world scheme related in Chp VIII, “As to the men and women, their choice on earth was stated in the prospect–Life on the lowest terms that could sustain it, down in the little village under the mill; or captivity and Death in the dominant prison on the crag.” Our betters would forego the “that could sustain it” part, and dehumanize “men and women” to mere “deplorables”; that’s what makes MV virtue more progressive than that of Monsieur the Marquis. The more things change the more they stay the same.

  3. In re the politically motivated assaination by motor vehicle, the driver admitted to police that he had deliberately targeted the 18 y.o. victim for a murderous assault because of his politics. This should be grounds for a charge of intentional (1st degree / capital) murder.
The killer has only been charged with vehicular homicide, which is usually charged in drunk driving cases where death results, and is the equavalent of reckless homicide (a third degree crime in most states, with a 5 to 10 year penalty, less time off), and is already free on bond, having paid $5.000 on a $50.000 bond.
It has become clear that justice for crimes against the right will no longer be had through the law. At some point, justice will be had regardless.

    • I agree. It seems deeply unfair that he is being charged with an accidental death arising from poor judgement due to alcohol abuse rather than an iteration of premeditated murder. If the victim recognizes the intent to kill well enough in advance to make a phone call for rescue then the perpetrator certainly was aware of his own intentions.

    • It may just happen that the leftist who killed that conservative boy might get the frontier justice after all, it is North Dakota and they don’t take kindly to someone killing their kid.
