In other news, a judge in Finland ruled that a tweet by former Interior Minister Paivi Räsänen did not constitute hate speech, and was protected as free speech. The state prosecutor will appeal the ruling to a higher court.

UK Shop Prices Surge at ‘Fastest Rate in Over a Decade’ as Household Brace for ‘Bumpy Road Ahead’

Shop prices surged at the fastest rate in more than a decade last month, forcing increasingly more households in the UK to feel the bite of the cost of living crisis, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed.

Retail prices shot up from 2.1 percent in March to 2.7 percent in April, according to a survey by the BRC-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index (SPI), published on Wednesday. This was the highest annual rate of inflation recorded by the SPI since September 2011.

The BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index is a monthly measure of UK shop price inflation.

Activist Organizations Sign Letter Advising Companies Advertising on Twitter to Reconsider Their Financial Support

Over two-dozen activist organizations and NGOs signed a letter advising companies who advertise on Twitter to reconsider their financial support of the company.

The 26 groups, led by activist organization Media Matters for America (MMFA), called on Twitter’s corporate advertisers to commit to a set of standards and practices currently in place by the platform to limit so-called “toxicity” by its users.

“Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter will further toxify our information ecosystem and be a direct threat to public safety, especially among those already most vulnerable and marginalized,” the letter began.

All US Internet Service Providers Are Ordered to Block Streaming Piracy Sites

In case you were wondering, website blocking at ISP level is alive and well in the US, although the practice is normally associated with authoritarian regimes who impose all manner of internet bans, often blanket in nature.

What is happening now regarding the attempt to remove three “pirate” sites from the internet is a blanket ISP-level blocking: a federal court has issued an order saying all 96 ISPs in the US must suppress three sites accused of streaming copyrighted material — Israel.tv, Israeli-tv.com, and Sdarot.tv.

Americans Are Beginning to Doubt Biden’s Mental Capacity

It turns out that the world has been making fun of President Biden for a reason. Judging by opinion polls, many American citizens believe that it is time for their geriatric leader to resign.

A majority of American voters think President Joe Biden is unfit to be president and doubt his mental capacity, a Harris poll showed.

Data from the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll (the survey was conducted April 21-22 this year) showed that 53 percent of those polled doubt that Joe Biden is mentally fit to serve as president. And 62 percent think Biden is too old to be leading the US. Somehow, Democrats did not notice his mental decline when they voted for him not long ago.

CDC Restates Public Transportation Mask Recommendation Despite Court Ruling

Despite a court ruling last month that struck down the national mask mandate on public transit, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is standing by its recommendations.

According to ABC News, the CDC restated their recommendations on Tuesday, urging Americans to wear masks on planes, trains, and buses.

Elon Musk Plans to Make Twitter Profitable

While known for his philanthropy, Elon Musk’s $44 billion investment into Twitter wasn’t an act of charity. Far from it, the world’s richest man and Twitter’s new owner intends to make the platform profitable.

In a couple of tweets on Tuesday night, Musk hinted at some of the plans he has for the social media platform’s operations, suggesting that government agencies and businesses might soon have to pay for the privilege of using the platform.

Since its inception over a decade ago, Twitter has been free to use for any individual, business entity, or government agency to use as a free platform to market on. That may no longer be the case once Musk officially takes over the company.

With dramatic rent price hikes in just about all major cities, people are looking for cheaper alternatives. Now, for about $800 per month, residents can opt to sleep in a pod. Brownstone, a recent Los Angeles-based startup is matching prospective renters to their new “pods.”

Brownstone’s concept involves buying single-family homes, usually with two or three bedrooms. They then build sleeping quarters which generally consist of a cubicle-style arrangement that can sleep over a dozen people.

Repair Shop Owner Sues CNN, Daily Beast, Politico Over ‘Russian Disinformation’ Claims Regarding Hunter Biden’s Laptop

The laptop repair store owner at the center of publicizing the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned hardware is now suing CNN, the Daily Beast, and POLITICO for defamatory damages that cost him his livelihood amid claims that the story was “Russian disinformation.”

Hunter Biden first dropped off his laptop in April 2019, but forgot about it. Mac Isaac shared the laptop’s data with the FBI in December of that year, before then Rudy Giuliani obtained it and the New York Post broke the story in October 2020.

Washington Post tech reporter Taylor Lorenz has walked back claims that a Drudge Report editor had repeatedly harassed her after it was revealed that the person had no connections to the outlet.

According to a Reliable Sources newsletter section penned by Oliver Darcy, Lorenz claimed that the was repeatedly harassed after Matt Drudge contacted her himself. The editor in question reportedly told Lorenz that he would use the website to destroy her career.

Texas Student Fatally Stabbed in School Bathroom; Classmate Jailed

Jose Luis Ramirez Jr. was stabbed in a campus bathroom at Belton High School

BELTON, Texas — An 18-year-old student has died after he was stabbed during a fight at a Texas high school and another student was taken into custody, authorities said.

Jose Luis Ramirez Jr. died after he was stabbed Tuesday morning in a campus bathroom at Belton High School, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) north of Austin, police said.

Belton Police Chief Gary Ellis said an 18-year-old high school senior was jailed in connection with the attack and was awaiting formal charges. Authorities said that student ran out of the school after the stabbing and was taken into custody about 20 minutes later…

Former minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Catherine McKenna spent more than double on her chauffeur than her replacement, Jonathan Wilkinson during the same time frame. Her expenses were approximately $110,000, which included the salary of her driver.

Ford PCs Pull Ahead of Liberals, NDP as Ontario Election Nears: Poll

The Ontario Progressive Conservatives, led by Doug Ford, have “pulled away” from the second and third-place Liberals and NDPs as the province’s election is set to kick off, a poll by Ipsos has found.

The survey was conducted for the Global News, and found that if the election were to be held tomorrow, the PCs would win under Ford with 39 percent of the popular vote.

39 percent of the vote would mark a four-point increase since last month, but a two-point decrease of their vote share from 2018.

Pierre Poilievre Says He and His Cabinet Would Boycott World Economic Forum

Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre and his wife Ana answered some tough questions on the campaign trail this week about pharmaceutical companies and globalist organizations.

Flanked by Ana at a campaign stop in Ontario, Pierre promised that his government would boycott the World Economic Forum (WEF) after being approached by a handful of people asking him about any possible connections to the organization.

Finland’s “Hate Speech” Prosecutor Appeals Against Ruling That Lawmaker’s Bible Quote Tweets Are Free Speech

On Friday, Finland’s top prosecutor said she will appeal a decision by a court that ruled against her “hate speech” allegation against a politician for posting Bible verses on Twitter.

The Prosecutor General argued that Paivi Räsänen, a member of parliament, broke Finland’s hate speech laws by using Christian theology in a public debate on radio and in tweets.

In a tweet to the leaders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, Räsänen posted a passage from Romans (1:24-27) saying:

Italy: Gas Five Times Dearer Than January 2021 Says Cingolani

Italy: Worker Dies in Accident at Justice Minister’s Holiday Home

Shocked and pained by incident says Cartabia

(ANSA) — ROME, MAY 3 — A foreign worker aged around 40 died crushed by a girder on the building site of the second home of Justice Minister Marta Cartabia at Ollomont near Aosta on Tuesday, the latest in a long string of workplace accident deaths in Italy.

“I am shocked and pained by the accident at my mountain home,” said the minister, who has been among the minister at the forefront of the battle to stem the tide of deaths.

Four other workers died on the job last week including one at the foreign ministry in Rome.

The government has taken several steps to try to stem the tide of deaths but the spate, which grabbed public attention a year ago with the death of a 22-year-old mother of a five-year-old boy, Luana D’Orazio, in a textile mill accident near Prato on May 3, 2021, has continued unabated.

The recent fatalities were the latest in a shocking wave of workplace accident deaths in Italy that saw 1,221 perish last year and which has spurred government action.

Such deaths are a national tragedy, Cartabia said on October 22.

She said the government had intervened by increasing the number of inspectors and checks, but a new law on administrative responsibility would be even more useful in stopping the rash of fatalities.

Premier Mario Draghi said on October 17 that workplace safety norms recently approved by the government sent the “unequivocal signal that you cannot save (money) at the expense of workers’ lives” after the spate continued with four more deaths in one day.

“As the government, we committed ourselves to doing everything possible to prevent these episodes happening again,” Draghi said.

“The norms are the realisation of this promise. We are increasing the numbers of workplace inspectors, we are stiffening sanctions, we are boosting computerization to improve checks.” Despite this, as the deaths continued, Italy’s big three trade-union confederations, CGIL, CISL and UIL, held a major demonstration in Rome in mid-December to demand further urgent action on health and safety to stem the tide of fatalities.

Turin held a day of mourning on December 21 for three workers who died when a large crane collapsed in the northern city the previous weekend.

Re-elected President Sergio Mattarella said in his inaugural address in February that such deaths must stop, while Pope Francis has also joined the chorus against the phenomenon.

The safety and dignity of workers boost the quality of work done, Francis tweeted ahead of the May 1 Labour Day holiday last Thursday.

“Working safely allows everyone to express the best of themselves while earning their daily bread. The more we take care of the dignity of work, the more certain we are that the quality and beauty of the work carried out will increase,” Francis tweeted at @Pontifex.

The number of workplace accident deaths in Italy rose 2.2% in the first quarter of 2022, accident insurance agency INAIL said last Thursday.

Algeria: Anti-Semitism Masquerades as National Interest

by Despite the undoubted success of the Abraham Accords, Anti-Semitism still flourishes across much of the Middle East and North Africa, e.g. Algeria. Indeed, the growth of Algerian Anti-Semitism is, at least in part attributable to the success of those accords because they now regional politics these accords furnish the pretext for rising Anti-Semitism that masquerades as a defense of Algerian interests against Morocco. In fact, this Anti-Semitism builds upon a long tradition in Algeria and the Arab world that predates the formation of the state of Israel but that greatly expanded due to the century-long conflict between Arabs and Jews over the destiny of the land of Israel.

The examples of the Algerian government’s hysteria on this subject abound. In 2020 the government denounced members of the European Parliament as “Zionists,” because they protested Algeria’s violations of human rights. More recently, in 2021 Algerian soccer players cas was suspended for refusing to face an Israeli opponent. However, obviously this Anti-Semitism occurs in more serious venues as well. Thus, when the African Union granted Israel observer status in 2021, Algeria, among other members, protested so loudly that this decision contradicted the Union’s previous pro-Palestinian resolutions that the union eventually had to suspend debate on the issue, thereby nullifying its previous decision. Naturally, Algeria celebrated this decisionas a great victory.

As noted above, the roots of this Anti-Semitism represent the commingling of historic Arab Anti-Semitism, itself, in no small measure a product of Western Anti-Semitism transplanted into a new colonial and imperial project in Algeria with state rivalries once that colonjalism ended. In Algeria’s case the protracted rivalry with Morocco over the Western Sahara has come to drive much of its foreign policy, including its rapprchement with Russia, and this Anti-Semitism. Whereas Morocco apparently now believes it is gaining international support for its position that the Western Sahara belongs to it; Algeria evidently again has become increasingly embittered about Morocco’s ties with the West, including Israel, and has become increasingly pro-Russian an anti-Western. As a result, it has taken up Russia’s cause in Mali against France, and has again manifested its support for Hamasagainst Israel. In similar fashion, Algerian authorities therefore claim that Israel is helping to plot separatist attacks from the minority Kabylie (MAK) population there in concert with Morocco. They likewise, claim that Israeli and Moroccan-backed groups are responsible for setting wildfires in Algeria.

Finally it also seems apparent now that Algeria will gravitate towards Iran whose relationship with Morocco has always been rocky, not least because of Iran’s support for the Polisario Front, the independence movement in the Western Sahara. The Israeli-Moroccan rapprochement that also evidently includes potential arms sales from Israel also evidently figures in this Iran-Algeria partnership because there are reports of an impending joint Israeli-Moroccan base near Melila in Morocco.

These examples of Moroccan-Israeli partnership clearly affect Algerian foreign policy. And politics, Algeria’s readiness to translate political tensions with Israel into a more pervasive Anti-Semitism underscores a rather darker and pervasive global issue. Algerian policy exemplifies the broader and more general process by which competing political interests become ethnicized and racialized to the point of demonology. Algeria’s Anti-Semitic policy ensures that the competition for influence in North Africa is now laced with animosities for Morocco and Israel that cast them as devils with whom no understanding is possible. It therefore seems as if for Algeria every issue in African politics, including its quarrels with France over Mali and its rapprochement with Russia is somehow connected with the West’s failure to recognize the rightness of Algiers’ cause in the Western Sahara. These twin processes of demonizing political rivals and of commingling all its outstanding grievances together with a heightened and ethnicized emotionalism will make it extraordinarily difficult for Algeria to make any satisfactory process on those issues that actually seriously affect its vital national interests.

Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, captured an Iranian agent last week who was ordered to kill an Israeli diplomat, a journalist, and a US general, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The Mossad had been operating in Iran at the time when they captured and interrogated Mansour Rasouli, who admitted during an interrogation that he had been ordered to assassinate a US general in Berlin, a journalist in France, and a worker at the Israeli consulate in Istanbul.

In Many Places in Maharashtra ‘Azaan’ Restrained Under Hindutva Pressure

Sujata More | HENB | Mumbai | May 4, 2022:: Under Hindutva pressure and ongoing row over loudspeaker and ultimatum issued by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, the first prayer call (Azaan of Fajr) from Mosques on Wednesday morning was performed in without using loudspeakers in many places across Maharashtra including Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Amaravati and Aurangabad.

Large number of security personnel have been deployed outside the mosques since morning to avoid any untoward incidents. In the city too, mosques avoided using loudspeakers during the first azaan in the morning.

On Tuesday, Thackeray had given a final ultimatum demanding to remove loudspeakers from atop mosques. He had also urged his supporters to play Hanuman Chalisa near mosques if loudspeakers are not removed.

Meanwhile, as a preventive measure, Mumbai police also arrested several MNS workers in Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and some other places late at night.

On Tuesday night, MNS Chief Raj Thackery issued a two pages press note where Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray urged people to play the Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers wherever they hear loudspeakers ‘blaring azaan (Islamic prayer call)’. Meanwhile, the Mumbai police served him a notice under a CrPC section related to prevention of cognizable offences.

On Wednesday, MNS chief Raj Thackeray posted a video of Bal Thackeray’s speech in his twitter handle+ to justify his demand.

Beside noise pollution and disturbance to patients, students and elderly people; the phrase used in the Azaan five times, “There is no god but Allah” so announced loudly is highly offensive to beliefs of plurality in Hinduism.

The Supreme Court of India and many other High Courts reiterated that ‘no use of loudspeakers is permitted between 10 pm to 6 am’; there are severe violations of loudspeakers used in religious places in many places.

On Tuesday, Meta published a compliance report that revealed it had censored 24.6 million posts from Facebook and 2.7 million posts on Instagram by Indian users in the month of March alone.

Pak Airstrikes in Khost and Kunar Demonstrate End of Islamabad-Rawalpindi Honeymoon

by In an unprecedented provocation, Pakistan conducted airstrikes on April 16 in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost and Kunar provinces to target alleged hideouts of the terrorist group, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The air raids resulted in the killing of 47 innocent civilians, including children and women, and more than 20 injuries. The incident has significantly increased tensions between the acting Taliban government in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As a result, there is a likelihood of more violent clashes in the border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In its official statement on the incident, Taliban warned of “dire consequences” if Pakistan conducts similar attacks in the future. Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s Deputy Minister of Information and Culture and Chief Spokesperson, issued a stern warning that “Pakistan should not test the Afghan people’s patience,” otherwise it will face “bad consequences.” Pakistan, on the other hand, did not acknowledge the airstrikes and blamed the recent spike in cross-border attacks allegedly emanating from Afghanistan and the Taliban government’s failure to stop TTP’s activities for tensions between the two neighboring countries.

Pakistan’s attack on the Afghan soil is a likely violation of Article 2(1) of the United Nations’ Charter, which clearly states that “use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.” The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in a statement that it was “deeply concerned” by civilian deaths caused by air strikes, and the mission was verifying the extent of casualties. Additionally, an Afghan representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund confirmed that, “In Khost, 12 girls and three boys were killed; in Kunar, three girls and two boys were killed.”

About 60 tenants have been driven out of their homes by illegal Nigerian migrants who have squatted buildings in the area and exhibited violent behavior, according to local reports.

French police took three illegal migrants into custody late Monday afternoon after they violently assaulted several police officers at Porte de Clignancourt, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris.

In a video shared widely on social media, one of the illegal migrants can be seen coming up behind the female police officer as she attempts to aid her partner involved in another arrest. Canada: Canceled Teacher Files $1.7 Million Suit Against Waterloo School Board

A former Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) teacher has filed a $1.7-million defamation suit against the board and its chairman Scott Piatkowski for making widespread claims she was “transphobic” and had engaged in “hate speech” in a January presentation to the board.

Carolyn Burjoski, a teacher of 20 years with the WRDSB, alleges in her claim to the Ontario Superior Court on May 4 that Piatkowski made false and defamatory statements to the media following the meeting. These include Piatkowski saying that her presentation was “disrespectful” to trans people and that it would cause them to “be attacked.”

On Jan. 17, Burjoski was just four minutes into her deputation objecting to the appropriateness of certain highly sexualized books in elementary school libraries — for kids from kindergarten to grade six — when Piatkowski abruptly stopped her.

Google now has a new tool allowing anyone to request the removal of their personal data from search results, including contact information.

“The availability of personal contact information online can be jarring,” said Google’s head of global policy in search Michelle Chang. She added that personal data could lead to “unwanted direct contact or even physical harm.”

Google already allowed the removal of personal or financial information from search results if a user could prove it was real danger or a potential threat. Now you can request the removal of your information even if there is no risk.

Gender Quotas: EU Parliament Votes to Make Women 50 Percent of All Candidates in European Elections

The European Parliament has approved a proposal to reform the European elections, which includes a radical gender quota requiring that 50 percent of candidates are women.

Rioters Attack Cops, Smash Windows During Roe v Wade Protest in LA

    The fact that the US and the UK do not dare to offer war guarantees has its explanation. Abroad, many expect that Sweden will end up at war with Russia if the government submits an application for NATO membership shortly after the provocation with armoured rockets, writes the Financial Times.

    – Joining Nato would be a huge provocation, a diplomat for another, unnamed, European government tells the Financial Times.

    Finns and Swedes have been told they could be subjected to “hybrid and cyber attacks”, the paper writes, but notes that few have probably thought a military confrontation likely.

    Either way, Swedes’ ambitions for foreign support have taken a major hit in the two months since Russia entered Ukraine.

    “Now there is no longer talk of security guarantees, but of following up the request with encouragement and verbal statements from the US, Britain and NATO,” the paper writes.

    Unlike in Sweden, where provocation and a desire to show that they will not give in to Russia have dominated the public stance of Swedish politicians, those in power in the US are openly worried about what will happen if their country goes to war with Russia.

    One American analyst, Atlantic Council researcher Robert Nurick, tells the Financial Times that security guarantees for Sweden and Finland have occupied much thought among US lawmakers recently.

    He says there is a distinction to be made between what Sweden and Finland would really need and what they need to calm their domestic debate, saying it is a “balancing act” that must be weighed against the threats Russia has made to the US and other states.

    – One question will be: do we want to make this worse? he says.

    One way that Finnish and Swedish leaders could use to reassure domestic opinion could be to claim that they have been given “secret” security guarantees and cite a desire to keep them secret from Russia, in effect avoiding telling Swedish and Finnish voters the extent of them.

    But the risk is that both Russia and the voters will understand that such guarantees are not real guarantees, and in Finland they do not seem ready to agree to a solution based on ambiguity.

    – On the one hand, we need to send a message to Russia that they can read and understand. On the other hand, we are not served by unnecessary provocations. In this case, clarity is probably a better solution than creating ambiguity,” Henri Vanhanen, foreign policy spokesman for the Coalition Party, told the Financial Times.
