A banned protest by thousands of anti-lockdown demonstrators in Berlin yesterday resulted in the arrest of more than 600 people. A 49-year-old man died while in police custody, but the cause of his death has not yet been released.

Fitch Ratings Reaffirms Hungary’s Stable Outlook
According to a statement from the ministry of finance, Fitch “explicitly praised Hungary’s stable economic performance and economic growth supported by investment, supportive fiscal policy, and an outstanding level of industrial production”.
The positive perception is further reinforced by the low unemployment rate, which fuels economic growth, as well as (future) family-friendly personal income tax refunds and vaccine abundance, Fitch said in its assessment of the Hungarian economy.
The ministry’s statement added that, in Fitch’s view, Hungary has adapted well to changed circumstances as a result of the coronavirus epidemic, and it is “stronger and more effective in protecting against the effects of the epidemic than in the EU”.

How Language in the Infrastructure Bill Could Roil the Crypto Markets
The cryptocurrency industry is lobbying hard this week against language in the Senate’s bipartisan infrastructure bill proposal that could choke a vast amount of the crypto ecosystem.
Language in the bill would require crypto brokers to report customer information to the Internal Revenue Service. More importantly, over the weekend it broadened the definition of what’s considered a “broker” to anyone “responsible for regularly providing any service effectuating transfers of digital assets on behalf of another person” which doesn’t exclude miners, software developers, stakers and other individuals in the crypto economy who don’t have customers.
“The language gives a lot of power to define what should be included in the reporting requirement,” Oppenheimer analyst Owen Lau. “It says any person who is responsible for regularly providing any service effectuating transfers of digital assets on behalf of another person — which can mean anything. If I transfer bitcoin for you, then it can mean I become a broker.”

Apple Bans ‘Tinder for Unvaxxed’ After Media Snitches on Company
Apple removed an app from its store that offered dating services for the unvaccinated after media outlet Bloomberg News snitched on the company.
After top dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble partnered with the White House to take the COVID-19 jab, a new app called Unjected was launched to cater for the vaccine hesitant.
Launched by two women in Hawaii, the service sought to appeal to “like-minded people that support medical autonomy and free speech.”

Banned Chinese Surveillance Tech is Being Used by US Authorities to Track Criminals in Realtime
In an eight-month pursuit of a young couple from Minnesota suspected of arson during the George Floyd riots last summer, law enforcement might have used blacklisted facial recognition technology, reported The New York Times.
According to federal authorities, Jose Felan, 34, set a fire at a Goodwill in Minneapolis and other fires at a school and gas station. His wife, Iraq-born Mena Yousif, 22, helped him avoid arrest by law enforcement authorities. The couple was on the run from mid-June 2020 to February this year, when they were arrested in Mexico.
According to the report, the eight-month hunt for the young couple “exposed an emerging global surveillance system that might one day find anyone, anywhere, the technology traveling easily over borders while civil liberties struggle to keep pace.”

Bay Area Imposes Mandatory Masking as Cuomo Demands Private Businesses Ban Unvaxxed
Update (1600ET): Reimposing mask mandates isn’t exclusively the domain of blue states like California. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (a Democratic governor in a red state) has reinstated Louisiana’s mandatory mask mandate for all people over the age of five — regardless of vaccination status — citing the rise in hospitalizations in the Bayou State.
The order comes as Louisiana sees the highest rate of new infections per capita of any state in the union. Face masks should be work at all times unless a person is at home according to the mandate, which will be in place until at least Sept. 1.
Update (1500ET): San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area have just imposed mandatory masking orders, regardless of vaccination status, that will likely outlast the CDC’s mandate.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors are refusing to comply with the Arizona Senate’s subpoena, attacking the audit as being “botched.”

Gov. Cuomo Grilled for 11 Hours by AG Probers Over Sex-Harass Claims
Gov. Andrew Cuomo was grilled for about 11 hours over the sexual-misconduct allegations against him as part of a probe by state Attorney General Letitia James, a report said Monday.
The governor was questioned last month by investigators working for James’ office — and lawyers involved in the probe also toured the Executive Mansion as well as Cuomo’s offices in Albany, where some of the alleged misconduct took place, the Wall Street Journal said.
Cuomo’s interview in a Midtown office building lasted about 11 hours, the New York Times added.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson was among more than 200 people arrested in Washington, D.C.,by Capitol Police on Monday while protesting in favor of Democratic legislation.

Kamala Harris is the Most Unpopular Vice President in Half a Century: Polls
Vice President Kamala Harris showed poorly in recent polls, which indicated that she is the most unpopular vice president in 50 years, since the 1970s or earlier.
The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that as of July 27, 45 percent of registered voters had a favorable opinion of Harris and 48 percent had an unfavorable opinion, a net rating of —3 percentage points.
In comparison, most other vice presidents have had a net rating at 0 or very close to it, including former Vice President Mike Pence, current President Joe Biden when he served under the Obama Administration, and Bush-era Dick Cheney.

Large Crowd Protests Valley Health Employee Vaccine Mandate
WINCHESTER, Virginia (WHSV) — A large crowd came out to the Winchester Medical Center Monday to protest Valley Health’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement.
“I’m just for informed choice I think everybody before a medical procedure should be done, they should have the right to all valid information, pros and cons and then it’s up to the individual to make a choice,” said Darrell Volschke, a chiropractor and one of the protestors.
On July 19 Valley Health announced that it is now requiring employees to get a COVID-19 vaccine by November 1 or face suspension or termination. A number of Valley Health employees are protesting the decision.

Lawsuit Over St. Louis Mask Rules Sent Back to State Court
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal judge on Sunday ruled that state courts should handle a lawsuit to overturn St. Louis-area mask mandates.
Judge Stephen Clark of the Eastern Missouri U.S. District Court sent the case back to state court, saying that the mask-mandate challenge primarily deals with state laws.
Missouri’s Republican Attorney General Eric Schmitt last week filed the lawsuit in state court in hopes of blocking the new mask mandates in St. Louis city and county, which took effect last week.
Lawyers for the city and county later asked a federal judge to take up the case instead.
But Clark ruled that the the issue deals with state laws on local health orders almost exclusively. He said local judges should be the ones to decide the case.

Lemonade Stand Shut Down by Authorities While Nearby Homeless Encampment is Allowed to Thrive
A 7-year-old girl’s lemonade stand was shut down in Everett, Washington, while elected officials and local authorities continue to ignore a nearby homeless encampment.
Every summer, Elsa LaMaine sets up her lemonade stand at Everett’s Rucker Hill Park and sells drinks, treats and flowers, according to KING 5. Ironically, she donates the proceeds to a local organization that helps the homeless.
Elsa told the outlet “There was a wicked witch who called the ranger,” referring to a neighbor who complained to the city’s parks department which shut down the stand. According to Elsa and her grandmother Cherie LaMaine, a park ranger showed up last Saturday and told them to close the shop because the city doesn’t allow people to sell products on public property.
A naked man walked out of the woods and into the park in the middle of interview Elsa and Cherie’s interview with KING 5 about the closing of the lemonade stand. The man was later spotted at a homeless camp a few blocks away.

One of the aides for Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., serves on a diversity council that has promoted critical race theory (CRT) in education.
The Washington Free Beacon reported on Monday that the Livingston Diversity Council, where Slotkin aide Mona Shand is board member at large, defends the controversial concept on its website.

Multiple Stabbed by Holyoke Woman, Police Say
A Western Massachusetts woman was arrested after allegedly stabbing multiple people.
The incident took place on Sunday, August 1 around 12:30 a.m., in Hampden County when Holyoke Police responded to the area of Main and Appleton at the Racing Mart Convenience store.
According to Holyoke police, two officers entered the parking lot area of Racing Mart, activated their emergency lights, and announced their presence.
Officers spotted a woman, later identified as Katherine Vazquez, yelling, making threats, and walking with a knife in her hand, said ?Captain Matthew Moriarty.
Officers drew their weapons and ordered Vazquez to drop the knife.
Vazquez ignored the officer’s orders and walked away. Vazquez continued to yell and make threats towards people in the area, Moriarty said.
Vazquez directed her screaming and threats to a group of women. The two officers continued to verbally engage Vazquez and gave several more commands to drop the knife, these commands were also ignored by Vazquez.
Officers continued to verbally engage Vazquez until Vazquez finally complied and put the knife in her pocket. Vazquez was placed under arrest.
Once Vazquez was secured the group of women, she was threatening entered a vehicle and left the scene.
The vehicle was located, and a traffic stop was made. During the traffic stop, it was discovered there were multiple stabbing victims in the vehicle, Moriarty said…

Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Stabbing of 76-Year-Old Man in SF
A 76-year-old man was fatally stabbed Saturday in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood and a suspect has been arrested, police said.
The stabbing happened in the 1500 block of Folsom Street, according to police.
The suspect, a 30-year-old man, is believed to have used a knife to fatally wound his victim, police said.
Homicide investigators haven’t released any other details and for now are withholding the name of the man arrested.

Portland Police Struggles to Recruit Officers to Combat Rising Murder Rate
Recruitment for Portland police’s revived Gun Violence Reduction team is at a dismal level as violent crime continues to surge in the riot-torn city.
The revelation comes on the heels of the June 16 resignation of the Portland Police Bureau’s entire Rapid Response Team, known commonly as the “riot squad” responsible for policing riot-related violence, after an officer was indicted.
According to the Wall Street Journal, retirements and resignations are also rising at local police departments across the country. There was an 18 percent increase in resignations and a 45 percent increase in retirements from April 2020 through March 2021 compared with the same period one year ago, according to a June survey by DC-based think tank Police Executive Research Forum.

Tennessee Releases Guidelines on Critical Race Theory Law
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) — The Tennessee Department of Education released a new set of guidelines Monday to help public schools navigate a new state law that bans the teaching of critical race theory (CRT).

A COVID-19 vaccination facility was set on fire in Poland’s southeastern city of Zamosc, the local police said on Monday.
“A sanitary-epidemiological station, [used as] a mobile vaccination centre, was set on fire in Zamosc. A special operational investigative group will be created to investigate,” the police said in a statement.

Liberal Slovak Government MPs Are Keen to Please Brussels
A group of five MPs from the liberal faction of the largest Slovak government party OLANO have submitted a proposal for the September session of parliament that would, according to the signatories, guarantee the protection of the LGBTQ community more effectively. During a press conference, the MPs argued that such a new legislation is needed in order to combat what they called are growing signs of aggression towards minority groups. Yet there are signs that they face an uphill battle against the Christian wing within their own party, which is against such changes in legislation.
The proposal is a clear signal from the liberal MPs that they want to present Slovakia as a progressive country when it comes to LGBTQ rights, in contrast with Hungary or Poland, whose governments have both been less than keen in adopting the gender ideology currently championed by the majority political establishment in Brussels. Among other things, the new proposal calls for authorities to monitor expressions of “intolerance” and “hate speech” on a number of forums, prompting fears of censorship and state surveillance against more tradition-minded citizens.

Moroccan Truck Driver Arrested After Fatal Road Rage Rampage in Spain
A truck driver from Morocco was arrested after a multi-crash rampage in which one person was killed and three more wounded in Catalonia, Spain, according to reports.
The deadly incident unfolded at around 6 p.m. on Sunday on a highway in La Jonquera.
Police say the 39-year-old suspect, who was drunk at the time, is believed to have run over another truck driver during an altercation, killing him.
As he tried to flee the scene, he drove the wrong way on a roundabout and collided with a car from France carrying three people.
All three occupants were seriously injured and transported to hospital by helicopter.

One Dead, 600 Arrested at Banned Anti-Lockdown Demo in Germany
A man died in police custody in Berlin as the German police force launched a hard crackdown of the anti-lockdown demonstration on Sunday, in which some 600 people were arrested.
It is not yet known what was the cause of death for the 49-year-old man who was in police custody in the capital of Germany, however, officers have reported that the man had complained of a tingling in his arm and chest. An investigation into the death has been launched.

Switzerland: Climate Activists Blockade UBS, Credit Suisse HQs
Climate activists briefly blocked the entrances to the UBS and Credit Suisse headquarters in Zurich on Monday in protest against fossil fuel funding by Switzerland’s two biggest banks.
Environmentalist organizations including Extinction Rebellion and Climate Strike staged the demonstration in which groups of around 30 to 40 people sat in front of the entrances.
Environmental activists have set up a week-long climate camp in Switzerland’s biggest city.
“The oceans are rising and so are we,” chanted the activists gathered under the banner Rise Up for Change.
At the UBS headquarters, activists also blocked access with bicycles.

Employers in the UK have been cautioned that forcing vaccine passports in the workplace may be a criminal offense, amid worries that “no jab, no job” practices are gaining ground.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, forcing vaccine passports in the workplace could be an “intrusion” on their body and may be considered discrimination.
Firms “cannot forcibly vaccinate employees or potential employees,” according to the organization, which represents human resources professionals.

UK: Extinction Rebellion Block Off Nottingham Road in Protest Against New Incinerator
Extinction Rebellion members built a wall of cardboard boxes in the middle of a Nottingham road to protest against plans for a new incinerator in Ratcliffe-on-Soar.
Members of the Nottinghamshire branch of the environmental activism group gathered by the entrance of Eastcroft incinerator in Nottingham at around 8am on Monday, August 2.
The group blocked vans from entering the site to voice their frustrations at £330m plans for a new waste incinerator in Ratcliffe-on-Soar, which were approved by Nottinghamshire County Council’s planning committee in June this year.

Maggie Oliver, a former detective who blew the whistle on the authorities’ refusal to tackle mostly-Muslim rapist “grooming gangs” in Manchester, England, has called for senior police officers and social workers to be prosecuted amid further abuse revelations.
Oliver, who now leads the Maggie Oliver Foundation supporting abuse survivors, spoke out in an article for The Telegraph following an independent review into child sexual exploitations (CSE) in multicultural Bradford which found, yet again, that police, social workers, and local government had failed victims — and that, more worryingly, some children “remain unprotected”.

Lockdown sceptic Tory MP Sir Desmond Swayne had warned that vaccine passports for nightclubs predominantly geared towards young people would be the “Trojan Horse for an identity card system”.
Mr Swayne had said that the introduction of vaccine passports for nightclubs, in a move to coerce young people to be vaccinated, should be a matter that concerns everyone, as the requirements could quickly roll out to include entry to venues that others frequent.

The UN’s Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer has requested more information on an incident in which a female anti-lockdown protester in Berlin was grabbed by the throat and brutally thrown to the ground by riot police.

The Facebook account of a Filipino legislator was suspended for repeated “community standards violations.” The account’s lock came shortly after the lawmaker promoted the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as effective against COVID-19.

Millions Locked Down as China Battles Worst COVID Outbreak Since Wuhan
We noted last week that the delta variant has finally arrived in China, causing one of the country’s worst outbreaks since the original wave of COVID that spread from Wuhan across China (and world). Well, despite authorities’ best efforts, the outbreak appears to have worsened over the weekend, and now officials are reimposing COVID-related restrictions in Beijing for the first time in months as questions about the efficacy of Chinese COVID vaccines multiply.
According to Bloomberg, the outbreak is now the broadest since the original outbreak in late 2019 as cases are being found in 14 of 32 provinces. The fact that delta has spread so widely across China — even if the case numbers, which are likely under-reporting (perhaps dramatically) the true levels of delta penetration, are still relatively low — is alarming government officials.

‘Go Home’: 15 Arrested After Early Morning Protest Blitz in Brisbane
Police have arrested 15 people and handed out 21 public infringement notices after quashing several attempts to protest Queensland’s lockdown orders this morning in Brisbane.
A strong police presence was seen in Brisbane’s CBD just before 9am, with authorities over the weekend warning potential protesters against a repeat of scenes seen in Sydney.
Of those arrested, 13 people were charged with contravening a direction and obstructing police.
Other offences included breach of bail and drug possession.

The RNLI is having to delay other rescue work because of the number of migrants it is now picking up in the Channel, it was claimed today.

German Greens Demand Gender Neutral Writing in Schools
The Green Minister for Education in the German state of Baden-Württemberg is pushing for the use of gender-neutral language in schools. According to her, the schools should agree with the students on the way of writing generic masculines, for example, expressions such as “teachers” or “pupils”, which can refer to both males and females.
However, the co-ruling Christian Democrats (CDU) criticize the plan for violating the coalition agreement. A wave of resentment has also come from philologists who speak of “language rape.”

PayPal co-founder David Sacks warns that the financial giant is creating a de facto ‘no buy list’ by banning people for their opinions, a move that will actually increase extremism in the long term.
In an article posted on Bari Weiss’ Substack newsletter, the investor explains how PayPal’s role has been completely reversed from its initial objective of helping ordinary people not be dependent on large financial institutions to start a business.
“But now PayPal is turning its back on its original mission. It is now leading the charge to restrict participation by those it deems unworthy,” writes Sacks.

The Gender “Equality” Ideology is Barging Into Polish Universities
Polish universities are preparing to introduce so-called “gender equality plans”, which are being enforced by Brussels bureaucrats. The University of Warsaw was the first to introduce such a plan, and the Kraków University of Technology is finalizing the plan’s acceptance.
The declared aim of the plans in universities is the assurance of “gender balance in decision-making processes and institutions, supporting equality in academic careers and the introduction of the biological and social dimensions of gender to research.”
Catholic daily “Nasz Dziennik” reports that within three years of accepting these plans, lectures and workshops on equality will be organized for the majority of the members of academic societies. Moreover, an anti-discrimination procedure will be introduced.

Transgender Olympian Weightlifter Knocked Out of Competition Early
New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard, the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics, has been eliminated from the women’s super heavyweight weightlifting competition.
Hubbard failed to complete any of her three lifts during the event.
Hubbard failed on her first attempt to get 120-kg above her head, bailing out early. On her second attempt at 125kg, she was able to get the weight up and pumped her fist after in satisfaction, however, judges ruled it a “no lift.”
She returned quickly for another attempt at 125kg only to fail to be able to stand up with the weight above her head. Hubbard was the only one of the 13 finalists to not complete at least one lift. —Yahoo Sports

Another transgenderism-based row has hit the UK, once again over concerns that children may not be psychologically and emotionally equipped to make decisions about changing their sex.
James Esses, a former barrister who volunteered with a charity as a counselor, expressed concerns along these lines, and did it on social media — an unfortunate choice, since chances were high his stance would attract the kind of attention that leads to canceling.
That is exactly what happened to Esses, who has not only been “fired” by the charity, Childline, but also had to leave a degree course he was attending at the Metanoia Institute in London.
