Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/21/2012

Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/21/2012The news feed is light tonight. Perhaps most of our tipsters were busy voting in the Republican primary in South Carolina (which Newt Gingrich won handily)…? Or maybe there are other reasons.

A third of the inmates in a jail for young offenders in London are Muslims, according to the latest statistics. There are also reports that many non-Muslims in the jail are converting to Islam, in order to get better food.

In other news, when a group of Salafist “morality police” invaded a beauty parlor in Egypt and demanded that the women there stop their immoral activities, the employees and customers of the establishment attacked the intruders with canes, beating them as they fled back into the street.

  1. “When Islamic morality police beat, rape, or brutally execute women, that is not news, but when women cane Islamic morality police, that is news.”

  2. Quote:
they found support on the streets as well as online, with one amused reader suggesting that women should be deputized to protect the revolution’s democratic values…
    end

Again, they confound democratic values with modern commercialism.
They have no understanding of democracy at all.
Not one thought of Socraties has crossed into their minds.
Not one scrap, piece or scintilla of the history of Rome!
    Not one!
And they fancy that they know what democracy is!

  3. Mr Gingrich got most of the votes in SC, but..

Gingrich is not on the ballot for 500 delegates worth of states (and neither is Santorum). He’s not on the ballot in Virginia and other states, or so I’m told. Besides that, he also has no grassroots support and almost zero to none ground game.

    So he’s not electable.

    Kind regs from Amsterdam,

  4. The more important barrier to Newt Gingrich’s electability is that his past record is absolutely radioactive. Ron Paul, with a long and highly consistent record of rejecting anything that does not comport with his understanding of the Constitution, faces at least some disadvantages because of the controversial positions he’s embraced. Mitt Romney, who ran for office as the governor of a very politically progressive state, has a record of positions that are sure to pose difficulties for conservative voters, and comes from a very small and disliked religious minority.

Gingrich, however, has publicly embraced almost every utterly wild idea that has come across the political transom during his time (and a few that he apparently invented on his own). If his personal life were as extravagant as his political life, he’d have dozens of ex-wives, mistresses, concubines, catamites, and a few sheep to explain. Whatever his actual qualifications, “unelectable” doesn’t even begin to cover the literal apocalypse (as in, a total and very disturbingly detailed revelation) that would follow his securing nomination.

To put it very mildly, he is not cautious about what he says…and he isn’t good at apologies either. Which might make for an entertaining Presidency…if God smites Obama with fire from heaven before all the republican voters have committed suicide in despair. Which would itself be rather a sight.

    Chiu Chun-Ling.
