A year ago Ali Al Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber, was released from prison on compassionate grounds after being given no more than three months to live by doctors who examined him. Now doctors (possibly not the same ones) say that Mr. Megrahi could live until 2017. Needless to say, some of the families of the victims are outraged by this latest information.
In other news, an English Defence League march in Bradford planned for August 28 has been banned by the government under the urging of police chiefs. The EDL says it will hold a static demonstration instead, which cannot by law be banned.
In possibly unrelated news, the BBC has launched competition to find new multicultural writers. Its senior executives say the Beeb’s current sitcoms are “too middle class”.
