“Follow the money!” Think U.S. appropriations to both the Defense Department and all the Intelligence Agencies. Consider how the Democrats hate to give either of these entities money and how they must prove their reasons for existence over and over and over to those that would prefer to pour $$$ into more social “dependency” programs.
Timeline it to Clinton’s big problems with Lewinsky but also with campaign contributions in 1996. Clinton who ignored the first WTC bombing and Reno and Gorlick making sure that the info that was being used in prosecuting could not be shared. But then he needed a diversion and perhaps all the Republicans that were screaming about “wagging the dog” were onto fact that Clinton and his minions including Tenet were rather hyping the intelligence.
Holbrooke at the UN almost became Kerry’s Sec of State. Now does it not strike any of you as strange that while the French, German, Russian and so on Intelligence Services were passing information proving how dangerous Saddam is, their diplomats were leaning towards lifting the sanctions. This set up Holbrooke/Clinton to take strong stance defending America. This set up France, Germany and Russia as Saddam’s bosom buddies. So because the Americans are being so unreasonable we’ll work with you on the side. The beauty for the OFF suppliers was that they as the system was so corrupt, they could ship expired medicines, contaminated foodstuffs and who would care or complain. There could charge non competitive prices. Profits rake-offs and kickbacks went into individuals’ pockets vs normal above the board trade where Corporations make the profits.
You might say that the French, Germans and Russians wanted the sanctions lifted to develop the Iraqi oil fields. Well, check the timeline of oil prices during this period and them consider that Russia needed lots of capital to develop their own oil reserves. Why would they be any hurry to help Iraq – so much closer to Europe and bringing all the estimated Iraqi oil to market would just suppress the value of Russia’s oil reserves?
Shame that LeCarre seems to be in early dementia, could really use Smiley to show us all the double games.
Tenet knew exactly how Clinton felt about the CIA – his treatment of Woosley was well documented. Tenet needed to prove his value to Clinton.
The DOD and the patrolling of Iraq’s no fly zones gave the DOD access to more funds, gave excellent real training to our pilots, provided needs that could be filled by Defense Dept contractors and DOD R&D. Think all improvements in weapons and communications since the 1991 Gulf War and all the contributions made by the patrolling of the No Fly Zones.
All was fine and everyone involved would have continued to play the game but SCOTUS in 2000 interfered a bit and then “horrors” 911 and hell broke loose with the NEO CON COWBOY in charge.
Richard Clarke pretends great surprise that GW could even ask him to look into possibility of Saddam/911 connection. Rockefeller runs off to the ME including a stop in Syria in Jan of 2002 to warn that Bush means it — hide everything — including any OFF biz trackbacks?.
This needs more talent than I possess to write up a footnoted analysis with timeline. I pray some of you will give this serious thought.

A funny thing happened on the way to democracy in Iraq. Democrats who voted against our entry into the first Gulf War, voted for the war resolution this time around. Why? They were certain that WMDs would be uncovered and President Bush would be hailed for making the world safer, removing a brutal dictator from power, and establishing a democracy in a vital part of the world. They couldn’t allow Bush to get all the credit! After all, they are the ones who made the case for war during the Clinton administration.
In truth, they made the case dishonestly and only to remove Monicagate from the news! These doves at all costs turned into hawks in a magician’s trick of deflection and deception. Don’t look at Clinton’s foibles, look at this evil guy in Iraq!
Phoenix morning talker, Bruce Jacobs (KFYI 960 AM), has started a campaign this week of “Dems lied to get us into war” and he is outraged. By quoting the Dems in their own words, it’s hard to argue that we were indeed “mislead into war.” Here are a few choice samples that Jacobs’ has compiled to lend credence to his thesis:
“Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.”Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998
