Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/24/2017

Islamic activists detonated a bomb inside a mosque in the Sinai during Friday prayers, and then gunned down people who managed to escape from the carnage inside. At least 235 people were killed, and an undetermined number of others were wounded. The attack was carried out by Sunni militants, targeting a congregation who were predominantly Sufi, and therefore mushrikun, according to strict Sunni doctrine. The Egyptian government responded by launching air strikes against the Palestinian city of Rafah.

In other news, former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as the new president of Zimbabwe, after the resignation of Robert Mugabe earlier this week.

Antifa Activists Target Professor Over Free Speech Event

A college professor has found himself a target of Antifa simply for trying to help host a free speech debate on his campus.

On Saturday, “Eugene Antifa” posted a tweet slamming Lane Community College (LCC) Professor Jeffrey Borrowdale. The Antifa chapter included a photo of him standing next to conservative personality Milo Yiannopoulis.

Conservatives Have a Breathtaking Plan for Trump to Pack the Courts

Conservatives have a new court-packing plan, and in the spirit of the holiday, it’s a turducken of a scheme: a regulatory rollback hidden inside a civil rights reversal stuffed into a Trumpification of the courts. If conservatives get their way, President Trump will add twice as many lifetime members to the federal judiciary in the next 12 months (650) as Barack Obama named in eight years (325). American law will never be the same.

The “outer turkey” in the plan is the ongoing Trumpification of the courts. In the final two years of Obama’s presidency, Senate Republicans engaged in tenacious obstruction to leave as many judicial vacancies unfilled as possible. The Garland— to-Gorsuch Supreme Court switch is the most visible example of this tactic but far from the only one: Due to GOP obstruction, “the number of [judicial] vacancies … on the table when [Trump] was sworn in was unprecedented,” White House Counsel Donald McGahn recently boasted to the conservative Federalist Society.

Trump is wasting no time in filling the 103 judicial vacancies he inherited. In the first nine months of Obama’s tenure, he nominated 20 judges to the federal trial and appellate courts; in Trump’s first nine months, he named 58. Senate Republicans are racing these nominees through confirmation; last week, breaking a 100-year-old tradition, they eliminated the “blue slip” rule that allowed home-state senators to object to particularly problematic nominees. The rush to Trumpify the judiciary includes nominees rated unqualified by the American Bar Association, nominees with outrageously conservative views and nominees significantly younger (and, therefore, likely to serve longer) than those of previous presidents. As a result, by sometime next year, 1 in 8 cases filed in federal court will be heard by a judge picked by Trump. Many of these judges will likely still be serving in 2050.

But even this plan — to fill approximately 150 judicial vacancies before the 2018 elections — is not enough for conservatives.

Enter the next element of the court-packing turducken: a new plan written by the crafty co-founder of the Federalist Society, Steven Calabresi. In a paper that deserves credit for its transparency (it features a section titled “Undoing President Barack Obama’s Judicial Legacy”), Calabresi proposesto pack the federal courts with a “minimum” of 260 — and possibly as many as 447 — newly created judicial positions. Under this plan, the 228-year-old federal judiciary would increase — in a single year — by 30 to 50 percent.

George Soros’ $18 Billion Tax Dodge Exposed

Congress is still scrambling to find ways to pay for its tax cut, so perhaps it should pay closer attention to last month’s news that George Soros had transferred $18 billion of his fortune to a private charity that he controls. There it will be sheltered from the Internal Revenue Service forever. This may be the single biggest tax dodge in U.S. history, yet no one on the right or left seems to have raised an eyebrow.

True tax reform is predicated on the principle that all income should be taxed at a low rate once, and only once. But much of the wealth that Mr. Soros spent years moving into his Open Society Foundations will never be taxed. A gift of billions of dollars of appreciated stock escapes any capital gains tax, and the estate tax as well. So Mr. Soros can donate appreciated stock that Open Society Foundations can liquidate without the government ever taking a cut.

There’s more. When a person donates untaxed, appreciated assets to a private foundation, he may also deduct up to 20% of its market value on his personal return, carrying forward this deduction for five years. This double write-off may be the sweetest deal in the tax code.

The donors also can retain control of the money within the private foundation for years or even decades before it is disbursed. Since the foundation can employ family members at six-figure salaries for life to “administer” it, the umbilical cord to the donor never has to be cut.

Ottawa Library Cancels Planned Screening of Controversial ‘Killing Europe’ Doc

The Ottawa Public Library has cancelled a planned screening of the documentary Killing Europe.

The Ottawa Public Library has cancelled this weekend’s screening of a controversial documentary, Killing Europe, after complaints the film was thinly disguised hate speech against Muslims and immigrants.

“I am letting you know that I have been working with the city solicitor about concerns brought forward by the Ottawa district labour council, unions, residents, board members and friends,” Coun. Tim Tierney, who is chairman of the library’s board of directors, said in an email. “I had asked the CEO to review and address the concerns expressed.”

“I can now report that the rental of the room will not take place.”

The documentary was to have been screened Saturday afternoon at the library’s main branch on Metcalfe Street. The screening was to have been hosted by the group ACT! for Canada, a group dedicated “to speaking out about the clear and present dangers emerging from those who do not embrace Canada’s values …”

Killing Europe, by Danish ex-patriate Michael Hansen, purports to warn of the dangers of the “Islamification” of Europe.

But even a “30-second Google search” by the library would have revealed it to be hate speech, says human rights lawyer Richard Warman, who was one of the people to complain to the library about the screening.

Screening the film is “in clear violation of the library’s own rental policy prohibiting the use of space for discriminatory purposes,” Warman wrote in an email to the library and its board members, Mayor Jim Watson, and others.

“When I looked at the three-minute trailer, it was clear it was going to be an all-out assault on immigrants and the Muslim community,” Warman said Friday.

“The messages contained even in just the trailer is that ‘immigrants are coming to swamp and devastate Europe and that Muslims are engaged in perpetual massacres of the white populations.’ Obviously, it set off alarms.”

Warman received confirmation the screening had been cancelled in an email Friday morning from library deputy CEO Monique Désormeaux.

Coun. Catherine McKenney, another library board member, said Friday she “wholeheartedly” supported the library’s decision to cancel the screening and promised better discussion in the future about what the library chooses to allow.

But where to draw the line between suppressing free speech and stifling hate speech?

Warman said the screening clearly violated the library’s obligations, stated on its website, to not provide public space for individuals or groups that “are likely to promote discrimination, contempt or hatred to any person on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, marital status, family status, sexual preference, or disability, gratuitous sex and violence or denigration of the human condition.”

“As a human rights lawyer, I’m firmly in the camp of defending freedom of expression under Section 2B of the Charter,” Warman said. “The library board is absolutely right to defend freedom of expression, while at the same time complying with their parallel obligation under Ontario human rights law not to discriminate against people on the basis of race and religion.”

In the case of Killing Europe and ACT! for Canada’s own newsletter, which Warman said includes claims of gang rapes and “grotesque caricatures of pakis, blacks and illegals,” there is “no grey area.”

“This is hate propaganda that is clearly directed toward recent immigrants and members of the Muslim community,” he said.

“The main thing is that we ensure public venues aren’t used as amplifiers of the message of hate-mongers … Public, taxpayer-funded facilities cannot be used to engage in hate propaganda. The library board has the obligation, when we know that these groups will attempt to misuse public facilities, that they engage in a sort of rudimentary 30-second Google check: ‘Who are you again? And what’s the movie you want to show?’ The 30-second Google check would have come up with the answers and set off alarm bells.”

ACT! for Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

At Least 235 Killed in Blast, Shooting at Egypt Mosque

At least 235 people were killed and 130 more injured in an attack at a mosque during Friday prayers in northern Sinai in Egypt, according to Egyptian state news agency MENA.

The attack consisted of a bombing at the mosque after which gunmen shot at the crowd. A Sinai-based reporter told ABC News that the casualties included children and elders.

A local resident present at the Beir El-Abd hospital, which received victims in the aftermath, described the wounded arriving via ambulance and private car at a rate beyond the capacity of the hospital, which is between 25 to 30 miles away from the targeted mosque. The resident added that urgent cases are being sent to another hospital in Ismailia, almost 75 miles away.

U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the attack via Twitter Friday morning, writing that it was a “horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers…

Militants Kill 235 in Attack on Sufi Mosque in Egypt

CAIRO — In the deadliest attack on civilians in Egypt’s modern history, Islamist militants detonated a bomb inside a crowded mosque on Friday and then sprayed gunfire on panicked worshipers as they fled the building, killing at least 235 people and wounding at least 109 others.

The scale and ruthlessness of the assault, which occurred in a small town in the insurgency-racked Sinai Peninsula, sent shock waves across the nation, not just for the number of deaths but also for the choice of target. Attacks on mosques are rare in Egypt, where the Islamic State has targeted Coptic Christian churches and pilgrims but avoided Muslim places of worship.

The attack injected a new element into Egypt’s volatile stew because most of the victims were Sufi Muslims, who practice a mystical form of Islam that some extremists deem heretical. And it underscored the failure of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who has insisted he needs to crush political opposition to combat the threat of Islamist militancy, to deliver on his promises of security to ordinary Egyptians.

“We will respond to the terrorist attack in Al Rawda,” Mr. Sisi vowed in a televised speech. “The military and the police will take revenge.”…

Canada Grants Refugee Status in About 60% of Illegal Alien Invader Cases

Over half of the migrant asylum claims heard by Canadian refugee officials this year have been successful.

New figures released by the federal Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) show that of 1,572 claims heard so far, 941 have been granted.

The IRB has a backlog of 12,895 cases currently pending.

Canada has seen a spike recent months of migrants crossing illegally into the country via the US and making asylum claims.

The new figures look at claims received by the IRB from “irregular border crossers” between February and October of this year.

Those made by migrants from Syria, Eritrea, Yemen, Sudan, Djibouti and Turkey were the most likely to be accepted.

UK: Teachers Warned Not to Say ‘Boys’ or ‘Girls’ As it ‘Reminds Pupils of Gender’

“I don’t think it is useful to be constantly reminded of your gender all the time and all the stereotypes that go with it.”

Teachers should avoid calling female pupils “girls” or “ladies” because it means they are “constantly reminded of their gender”, a former government mental health tsar has said.

Natasha Devon, who was appointed MBE in 2015 for “services to young people”, said the move would help transgendered children as well as encourage female and male students to defy traditional notions of gender, which affect “well-being”.

She told the Girls’ School Association’s annual conference in Manchester that she would “never walk into a room in an all-girls’ school and say ‘girls’ or ‘ladies’“ because it is “patronising”.

Teachers should instead address youngsters as “pupils”, “students”, or even just “people”, she insisted, according to The Telegraph.

“I don’t think it is useful to be constantly reminded of your gender all the time and all the stereotypes that go with it.”

  1. On ISIS Latest: “…there are still unresolved issues in the region, such as sectarian conflict, economic hardship and religious rivalries…” – In the Middle East, these have been around since the time of the Pharaohs and will be there till the end of times.

  2. Why are they so preoccupied with gender, boys and girls? Maybe it’s their way of saying: ‘Hey, God, you screwed up when you created us male and female!’ I want to be an airplane!
