Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/1/2018

Italy finally has a new government: a coalition between the 5-Star Movement and the Lega Nord known as the “Government of Change”. The law professor Giuseppe Conte will serve as prime minister, Matteo Salvini of the Lega Nord is interior minister and deputy prime minister, and Luigi Di Maio of the 5-Star Movement is minister of economic development and deputy prime minister. Paolo Savona, whose appointment as economy minister derailed the first version of the government, has been replaced by Giovanni Tria in that position, but will still serve in the cabinet as minister of European affairs.

Newly-minted Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said that one of the new government’s first actions will be to send home a half a million migrants.

In other news, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy (a Christian Democrat) has resigned after a no-confidence vote, and Pedro Sanchez (a Socialist) has taken his place.

Unemployment Rate Falls to 3.8% as Employers Add 223,000 Jobs in May

U.S. hiring rebounded in May after two months of lackluster gains as employers added 223,00 jobs and the labor market continued to defy widespread worker shortages and global economic troubles.

The unemployment rate fell from 3.9% to 3.8%, an 18-year low, the Labor Department said Friday.

Russians for Hillary

by Diana West

Earlier this month, the Senate Judiciary Committee released a set of transcripts of interviews and exhibits related to its “Inquiry into Circumstances Surrounding Trump Tower Meeting.”

I am looking at the interviews from the “Russian” side of the table, the people who sat across from Don Trump Jr. as he waited expectantly to hear an incriminating story about Hillary Clinton that never came: Irakly “Ike” Kaveladze, Anatoli Samochornov, Rinat Akhmetshin, the Britisher Robert Goldstone. There is also the written testimony of Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Whether there is anyone who still believes this meeting was anything but a set-up from the get-go, it’s notable that these interviews show us there was not one Trump supporter among the Russians there to “help” Trump. You might even call this weird posse, “Russians for Hillary.”

Take Irakly “Ike” Kaveladze. He moved to the US in 1991 and became a US citizen in 2001, still retaining his Russian Federation passport. He is so pro-Hillary that until he learned that the meeting with Don Jr. would not feature information incriminating to Hillary, he didn’t even want to go…

Bulgaria Torn Between Russia and the West

Bulgaria is dependent on Russian gas, but it is also a member of NATO and the European Union. Straddling the gap between Moscow and Brussels has put the country in a foreign policy quagmire.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev’s and Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s recent visits to Russia have fueled speculation that Sofia may be turning its back on the West and aligning with Moscow. Bulgaria, which is a European Union member state, is dependent on Russian gas, and there has even been talk of reviving Bulgaria’s Belene nuclear power plant project using Russian technology. Economic ties aside, Bulgaria and Russia also have much in common historically, linguistically and culturally. This longstanding relationship has made Bulgaria reluctant to freeze out Moscow since joining NATO and the EU.

Parts of Bulgaria’s political establishment insist the country could act as a mediator between Russia and the West, or at least capitalize on its good ties with Moscow. It’s in this context that the name of Bulgaria’s World War II-era leader, Czar Boris III, often comes up. In 1942, he allegedly told Nazi Germany’s foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, that “[Bulgaria] will always be on Germany’s side and never against Russia.”…

Direct Rule on Catalonia Due to be Lifted as Separatist Govt Sworn in

Catalonia’s new separatist government will be sworn in Saturday, the regional presidency announced, which will spark the automatic end of Madrid’s direct rule over the region.

Before being toppled by a no-confidence vote in parliament on Friday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy gave the green light to a new executive in Catalonia that does not include jailed or exiled former ministers.

The new ministers will take up their posts on Saturday, the regional government announced.

This will automatically lift direct rule imposed by Madrid after Catalonia’s now-deposed leaders tried to break from Spain in October.

EU President Scorns Italians: ‘Work Harder, Be Less Corrupt’

ROME— The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker defended the European Union Thursday, saying that Italians need to work harder, be less corrupt, and stop blaming the EU for their problems.

“This means more work; less corruption; seriousness,” he said.

Italy’s Popular Populists

Despite Italy’s political turmoil, most people in the country want the election-winning populists to form a government and get to work. They’re eager to see the political establishment pack up and leave.

Trionfale market in Rome’s Prati district is not a tourist attraction. This is where locals go to stock up on top quality produce — cheese and meat, including fresh buffalo mozzarella, artichokes and zucchini flowers. The market offers everything a true Italian food enthusiast could want. But times are changing, with more and more young Italians buying groceries in budget supermarkets and eating fast food.

Italy’s working people are struggling

“The market used to be bustling, everyone was busy working,” recalls 52-year-old Enrico, who runs a sausage and cheese stall. For 26 years now, the market has been his workplace. “Now look around you. There’s nobody apart from a few elderly people. I have two daughters who don’t work and go to university, I have loans to repay, and I often don’t know how I’ll make it to the end of the month.” He adds that 54 million other Italians have problems just like him…

Juncker: Italians Need to Work Harder and be Less Corrupt

European commission president says Italy’s problems can’t all be blamed on the EU

Jean-Claude Juncker has said Italians need to work harder, be less corrupt and stop looking to the EU to rescue the country’s poor regions, in comments unlikely to ease the fraught political battle over Italy’s future relationship with Brussels.

Days after the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, defended Italy’s place in the eurozone against the country’s populist leaders, the president of the European commission said he was in “deep love” with “bella Italia”, but could not accept that all the country’s problems should be blamed on the EU or the commission.

“Italians have to take care of the poor regions of Italy. That means more work; less corruption; seriousness,” Juncker said. “We will help them as we always did. Slovenia: Election on Sunday, Conservative Leading in Polls

Leader Sds Jansa backed by Orban. Many still undecided

(ANSA) — LJUBLJANA, JUN 1- In Slovenia the electoral campaign ends today in view of Sunday’s early elections. In mid-March, prime minister Miro Cerar resigned after a decision by the Supreme Court has invalidated the referendum on the project to build the second track of the Divaca-Koper railway line, an infrastructure project that he strongly supported. The referendum was then repeated in mid-May, and for the second time it did not reach the quorum and was therefore rejected.

The main topics of the electoral campaign were the privatization of state companies, immigration, public health reform and the raising of pensions. The SDS, the largest opposition party led by former prime minister Janez Jansa is leading in the polls with about 25% of the vote, and is very close to Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, who through has financed the electoral campaign through his entourage. The Civic List led by Marian Sarec comes in second place in the polls, with about 13%. Third, the Social Democratic Party (SD), with 12%.

According to different opinion polls, more than a fifth of the voters said they were still undecided. Among the political forces that should enter the parliament, in addition to SDS, SD, SMC and LMS, are New Slovenia (NSi), with 8%, the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS), the United Left (Levica), with 7 %, and the movement led by Alenka Bratusek who should be able to exceed the 4% threshold to enter parliament.

Polling stations will be open on Sunday from 7am to 7pm, and the first official results will be known as early as 9pm.

Putin, the Manager

On May 30, Russia Today (not to be confused with the RT television network) published an article by Srdja Trifkovic in Russian, “Putin is a manager rather than a far-seeing statesman who follows a long-term plan.” We bring you this piece in Dr. Trifkovic’s translation, a sequel to his article Putin’s Collapsing Credibility posted here a month ago.

It has been perfectly clear to me, since early spring of 2014 and Putin’s hesitating response to the crisis in Ukraine, that Russia does not have a serious strategy. An adequate response would have entailed prompt despatch of Russian forces to protect the Russian-speaking population, from Kharkov in the northeast to Nikolaev in the center and Odessa in the southwest, in accordance with the R2P doctrine. Instead, there was a consolation prize [Crimea], rather meager for the loss of 500 miles of strategic depth inhabited by a pro-Russian majority.

Russia experienced something similar with the regime-change operation in Tbilisi in 2003, when Shevardnadze was replaced by the unstable Mikhel Saakashvili. The Russians “protected” South Ossetia and Abkhasia, one-fifth of the country, but Georgia was lost to the pro-NATO regime. In Central Asia the Russians are losing ground to the Chinese. Their north-south geopolitical vector in the direction of Iran has been cut by the Chinese one, which extends from Xinjiang to the Caspian Sea. The Chinese are gaining ground with greater investment and soft power, which is also projected by Turkey throughout the region. This is aptly illustrated by the fact that Kazakhstan is replacing Cyrillic with Latin as its national language script…

Migrants: Austria and Germany, More Controls at the Brenner

Joint activities, focusing on freight trains

(ANSA) — BOLZANO — At the Brenner pass trilateral patrols, consisting of Italian, Austrian and German agents, have long been operating to cope with illegal migration. Germany and Austria have just announced their intention to strengthen their controls, not only at the Brenner but also at the border between Austria and Germany. In Bavaria, the local police will also take part in the border controls in addition to the Austrian and German federal agents.

Thomas Borowik, spokesman for the German Federal Police in Munich, said that the controls will focus on freight trains to prevent migrants from attempting “this dangerous path of illegal immigration” to Germany.

However, the numbers are decreasing. In 2017, 14,600 migrants were intercepted along the border between Austria and Germany, whereas they were only 3,800 in the first four months of 2018.

SOS Mediterranee Rescues 158 Migrants Off Libya

‘Only NGO in the area and could have stayed longer’

(ANSA) — Catania, June 1 — The Aquarius ship of the NGO SOS Mediterranee rescued 158 people on an overcrowded dinghy some 158 miles north of the Libyan town of al-Khoms on Friday.

Among the 158 passengers were 26 women and 5 children. The migrants were from West Africa, Bangladesh, Sudan and Morocco.

Most of them, the NGO said, told volunteers onboard the ship that they had suffered violence, abuse, arbitrary detention and extortion in Libya.

The Acquarius will land in Pozzallo on Saturday after authorization from the Italian authorities. SOS Mediterranee’s rescue coordinator for the Acquarius, Loic Glavany, noted that “the ship can carry over 500 passengers for 2-4 days and is at the moment the only NGO rescue ship in the area. We left deeply worried since if other boats were to find themselves in danger they will most likely not be discovered and rescued in time. And this will likely result in tragedies that we cannot even know about.”

  1. “The face is your passport. When you refuse me to see you, I am a victim.” — Jacques Myard, a former conservative MP who supported the ban in France.

A very cleverly crafted political statement. The veiled face oppresses me.

  2. God bless Italy! Let’s hope this starts to turn things around for them. Maybe if other countries see Italy’s dire situation improve, the tide might start turning.

  3. Danny Ortega back to being a murdering Marxist again, in Nicaragua. The Marxist Democrats protected him in the 1980’s, led by Tip O”Neill, so he could still murder after all these decades.

  4. At the 2018 world Cup stadiums will limit the sale of pork dishes

At the 2018 world Cup stadiums will limit the sale of pork dishes due to the fact that the beginning of the Mundial coincides with Ramadan.

So, in the menu in the VIP-boxes there are no hot dishes of pork meat, people will be able to order only a meat plate, which will include Parma ham.

A similar situation in the food courts at the stadiums – all burgers, sausages and hot dogs will be made from beef and chicken.

    https://www.soccer.ru/news/1051956.shtml

    • Turns out it’s still more fun!

With a request to limit the sale of pork in Russian cities during the 2018 FIFA world Cup, The German football Union appealed to the organizers of the tournament. Their wishes the Germans are motivated by the fact that most of the players of the national team of Germany it is impossible to use the meat as food for religious reasons.

      https://panorama.pub/3619-nemtsy_svininu_ne_zhrut.html

      • To be honest, this is the least of my worries. When I was young, we had two pigs a week, but I don’t like pork anyway. It is not good meat as far as I’m concerned.

And if they don’t want to eat Viener Schnitzel or something, it is a matter of courtesy not to give them food they don’t want to eat.

        http://mvslim.com/10-muslim-players-ruling-uefa-euro-2016/

        • It’s not about your personal taste. The absence of pork in the championship opened another “Window of Overton”.
This is a very, very bad sign of Russia’s submission to Islam.

    • Think on the bright side – ramadan only just overlaps the world cup, there might have been a lot of hungry fans otherwise

      • Also in Russia beef is much (1,5 – 2 times) more expensive than pork. Someone wants to make money.

    • Bleak time ahead for European pig farmers I predict. Soon the meat will be unsaleable in shops and restaurants.
