Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/12/2011With the landslide victory of the AKP, Turkey may have just experienced its last free election. If the fundamentalist Islamic party gains a two-thirds majority in parliament, it can institute constitutional changes that will keep it in power indefinitely.

In other news, Moammar Qaddafi’s daughter Aisha has filed a complaint with the European Court in Brussels, accusing NATO of war crimes. Her charge concerns the bombing attack on Tripoli which allegedly killed her brother Seif al-Arab and three of his children.

  1. The western world is promoting democracy in muslim world.this is good. But when you are supporting secular military dictatorship it does not make any sense.
    islam

  2. Just for the record:the article in the newsfeed about a demo in Melbournistan held by the ADL is a rehash of a previous article.

My post about that rally is here.

  3. I’m just seeing more and more “unity in diversity” every single day!
    Disabled fearing to travel.
    Muslims b**ching about hate crime.
    Britons policing thought crime.
Vehicular homicide and porno violence in America.

  4. Islamic democracy = tyranny of the majority.
Only in the West does the majority face scrutiny. In the rest of the world, where the individual usually means nothing, the aims of the majority are never questioned.

  5. With the landslide victory of the AKP, Turkey may have just experienced its last free election.

Its kinda debatable whether Turkey every really had free elections to begin with.

I’d be willing to say, “the most free-like elections within Muslim influenced societies”.

The point, though, is that this may be the last spark of free political expression they experience for a very long time. Same goes for Egypt.

From my perspective this is a very sad thing.

  6. Turkey has ALWAYS persecuted people of other faiths. Moderate persecution is STILL persecution.

For crissakes the Turks sponsored a mass pogrom in the 50’s in ISTANBUL, in which the targets were Greeks and any man who wasn’t circumcised. They burnt a Christian priest to death and the Turkish authorities did NOTHING (and in fact, have been thought to have been complicit).
