Canada’s Household Debt Surpasses 100% of GDP, Third Highest Globally: Report

Canada has the third-highest household debt in the world, trailing only Switzerland and Australia and far exceeding any other G7 country, according to a Desjardins report.

Canada’s household debt as a percentage of GDP exceeded 100% by the end of 2023, with Australia near 110% and Switzerland around 125%. On the lower end of the spectrum, France had just under 65% of its GDP as household debt, with the United States at nearly 75%.

Household debt to GDP compares the total debt held by households to the country’s GDP. A high ratio means that a large portion of a country’s residents’ income is tied up in debt repayments, limiting consumer spending and economic growth.

Japan Sees Largest Wage Hike in 33 Years, 2024 Pay Deals Conclude With 5.1% Gain

Japan’s annual pay negotiations have concluded with the highest raises in more than three decades. According to the final tally by the country’s largest union group, Rengo, members achieved a 5.1% gain in wages for 2024.

This result, slightly down from the initial 5.28% increase reported in March, remains the largest hike since 1991. Rengo, representing around 7 million workers or roughly 10% of Japan’s workforce, confirmed this upward trend in wages aligns with the central bank’s objectives.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) aims to boost consumption and ensure stable price growth, with wage momentum playing a critical role. The central bank raised interest rates in March for the first time in 17 years, following Rengo’s initial wage increase report. The next BOJ policy meeting is scheduled for the end of this month, with a Bloomberg survey indicating one in three analysts expect another rate hike.

The final wage figures revealed a notable gap between large and small firms. Businesses with fewer than 300 employees secured a 4.45% salary increase, indicating a greater disparity compared to last year. These smaller businesses, which employ 70% of Japan’s workforce, remain a focus for both the BOJ and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Despite the strong wage negotiation outcomes, it remains uncertain when wage growth will lead to positive monthly real wages and whether increased disposable income will boost consumer spending amid ongoing inflation.

Back in May, House Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled legislation designed to ensure that only American citizens vote.

The unfortunate reality is that Joe Biden has let in millions of illegal immigrants, and the risk that these immigrants could influence our elections is extremely high. Legislation like this is absolutely necessary.

Johnson was pushing for the bill before the Independence Day recess with a thread explaining what the legislation does to ensure that only U.S. citizens vote.

Brutal Attack Caught on Video as Black Man Beats Up, Robs Elderly Asian Woman in Oakland

A black male suspect brutally assaulted and robbed an elderly Asian woman in a recent unprovoked attack in Oakland, California, according to video surveillance footage.

Comer Seeks Docs, Interview With White House Physician Who Obviously Lied

White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor — who for years has been giving President Biden a clean bill of health despite obvious signs of cognitive and physical decline — has some ‘splainin’ to do.

On Sunday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer demanded to interview O’Connor, and has suggested that the doctor’s involvement in a Biden family business dealing “may have” influenced his medical assessments of the president — who was found to be too cognitively impaired to prosecute for mishandling classified documents.

Specifically, O’Connor counseled James Biden in connection with alleged work he was performing for Americore Health, LLC — which paid James Biden $200,000 the same day James turned around and wrote Joe a check for $200,000 for an undocumented “loan repayment.”

Renowned Scientist Warns ‘99.9% Chance’ AI Will Destroy Humanity

A world-renowned computer scientist has raised the alarm over the growing threat that is emerging from the rise in artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

As companies around the world seek to cut costs by replacing their human workforce with AI-driven machines, part of the threat to society is already apparent to many.

However, experts are warning that the threat to human civilization goes beyond the loss of jobs.

In a landmark survey conducted earlier this year, more than half of the 2,778 researchers polled expressed concerns about the existential threat posed by superhuman AI.

The survey indicated a five percent chance that humanity could face extinction or other “extremely bad outcomes” due to the rise of super-intelligent AI systems.

One of the prominent voices raising the alarm is Roman Yampolskiy.

Yampolskiy is a respected figure in AI research and a distinguished computer science lecturer at the University of Louisville.

Revealed: Trudeau’s ‘Thought Crimes’ Bill Would Create $200 Million in New Bureaucracy — Poilievre Vows to Repeal it

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievere says he would repeal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act, after learning it would cost an additional $200 million for government employees to monitor alleged “hate crime offenses” according to the latest report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO).

The bill has passed first reading in the House of Commons but could potentially die on the order paper before the next federal election, slated for October 2025.

The Online Harms Act, while ostensibly seeking to “protect all people in Canada from hatred,” would create a definition of “hatred,” increase existing penalties for “hate propaganda offenses” and promulgate a unique Criminal Code entry for a “hate crime offense” while offering new “remedies” for violating online hate speech within the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Czech Finance Minister Proposes Abolishing Windfall Tax Amid Revenue Surplus

Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura (ODS) aims to discuss the potential abolition of the windfall tax with coalition partners, citing higher-than-expected state revenues from the tax on unexpected profits.

Stanjura noted that the revenue generated from banks and energy companies now surpasses the recent crisis-related expenditures, making the continued imposition of the tax unnecessary. However, three government parties remain cautious about this proposal.

Current budget results indicate that the state has already recouped what was spent last year on energy assistance for households and businesses through the windfall tax, though a detailed analysis is pending.

“In my opinion, the extraordinary revenues from the windfall tax and levies from excessive income of electricity producers should more or less balance with the state’s expenditures on helping households and businesses with high energy prices. If this is the case, there is no reason for the windfall tax to last the full three years,” Stanjura communicated to Czech Television via SMS.

The Ministry of Finance’s budget for this year anticipated revenues of 17.2 billion crowns from extraordinary taxes, aimed to cover the remaining extraordinary expenses from the previous year. By June, collections had already reached 18.2 billion crowns. Last year, the windfall tax and related levies generated 57.9 billion crowns. Revenue for 2025 was estimated at ten billion crowns. Consequently, Stanjura expects a political debate within the coalition on the next steps. Jan Jakob, chairman of the TOP 09 parliamentary club, remarked, “If we ignore those challenges and crisis parameters, then such a measure probably doesn’t make sense.”

The coalition initially passed the windfall tax for the 2023 to 2025 tax periods, with discussions about its potential early abolition emerging after just one year. Three coalition parties—STAN, Pirates, and KDU-CSL—expressed caution, concerned about the potential drop in revenues. Jakub Michalek, chairman of the Pirates’ parliamentary club, stated, “We agreed on a certain duration. If it were to change, it would only be with other proposals that we will discuss, including recommendations from NERV (National Economic Council).”

KDU-CSL Vice-Chairman Jan Bartosek echoed this sentiment, “At present, there is no coalition consensus, and I will wait for this discussion. We will see how it develops.”

The opposition underscores that the windfall tax has been crucial in reducing the state budget deficit, which stood at 178.6 billion crowns mid-year. Alena Schillerova, chairwoman of the ANO parliamentary club, commented, “When it was being discussed, I proposed: let’s do it for a year and then evaluate it, and if necessary, do it better. I think the windfall tax was set up very poorly.”

Despite the opposition movement’s lack of support for the tax during its initial discussions, Stanjura currently lacks the majority needed for its early abolition, even within the coalition.

Dutch Patriot Air Defence System Deployed to Lithuania for Military Exercise

A Dutch Patriot air defence system has been deployed to Lithuania as part of the annual international military exercise, Baltic Connection 24. This deployment aims to enhance the protection of Lithuania’s population and infrastructure against potential threats from aircraft, drones, and missiles.

Russia’s escalating aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities have underscored the need for more robust air defence systems. The Dutch air defence battery arrived at Klaipeda port on Saturday morning and is set to be relocated to the Siauliai air base, where it will operate for the next two weeks.

Lithuania shares a border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, where, according to the Polish government, Russia may have stored approximately 100 nuclear weapons.

Lithuanian officials view this deployment as the initial step towards implementing the rotational air defence model agreed upon during the NATO summit in Vilnius last year. “It’s important in a way that we will be able to test and prepare for this rotational model, which means we know what to do and how to do it. The only thing left is to test it out,” said Ovidijus Pilitauskas, Commander of Lithuania’s air defence battalion.

The Lithuanian military stated that the exercise would focus on improving readiness for force movements and integration, unified command and control, and execution of air defence operations.

Sweden and the Netherlands are among only seven NATO countries in Europe that field Patriot systems, alongside Germany, Greece, Poland, Romania, and Spain, according to data from the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

French Left Set to Beat Le Pen’s Far Right in Election Shock — Politico

PARIS — The left-wing alliance in France is on course to win the most seats in parliament in a dramatic election upset, dealing a surprise blow to the far-right party of Marine Le Pen.

Le Pen’s National Rally came top in the first round of voting a week ago and was aiming to secure the most seats in France’s legislature for the first time in the party’s history. But tactical voting and collaboration between Le Pen’s opponents in an effort to keep her party out of power appeared to have paid off, forecasts from pollsters suggested.

President Emmanuel Macron called a snap vote after a stunning defeat in last month’s European Parliament election, promising “a clarification” of the French political landscape. Instead, the country appeared on track towards greater uncertainty, with no single party holding a majority.

Macron’s own position as president was not at stake in the election: He is due to remain in office until 2027.

According to early estimates by polling institute IFOP — replicated by other pollsters — the left-wing alliance is on course to have between 180 and 215 MPs in France’s 577-seat National Assembly. That puts it ahead of Macron’s liberals on 150-180 seats, with the far-right National Rally and its allies forecast to have 120-150 MPs in the new legislature.

In the minutes after the first seat projections were announced, the far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon took to the stage in front of his jubilant supporters. “[We] wrested a result that everyone said was impossible in a wonderful leap of civic spirit … The people have avoided the worst,” he said.

The seat projections for the final, second round of the election are based on early estimates and a lot could could change as official results are announced from the vote-counting in the hours ahead.

The former President of the Republic, who served as the head of state prior to Emmanuel Macron from 2012 to 2017, joined the far-left New Popular Front alliance last month and has been sent back to the National Assembly as a socialist deputy (MP).

UPDATE 2040: Far-left Leader Mélenchon Issues Demands to Macron

After winning the most seats of any party in Sunday’s second round legislative elections, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the principal leader of the socialist-communist New Popular Front, has called on President Emmanuel Macron to either resign from office or to “appoint a prime minister from our ranks”. Mélenchon has previously argued for himself to be installed as PM, however, it is not clear if Macron would be willing to do so.

UPDATE 2030: Prime Minister Gabriel Attal Announces Resignation, Le Pen Vows to Fight On

Emmanuel Macron’s second in command, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced he would tender his resignation tomorrow morning to the head of state, saying: “This evening, the political group that I represented in this campaign does not have a majority, I will submit my resignation to the President of the Republic tomorrow morning.

With no party obtaining an absolute majority, it is possible for Attal to be reinstated as PM, however, it is more likely that President Macron will likely have to cede the position to a candidate from the far left if he wishes to form a parliamentary alliance with the New Popular Front to govern the country.

Following the disappointing results, the leader of the populist National Rally in the French parliament, Marine Le Pen said: “I have too much experience to be disappointed by a result where we double the number of our deputies… The tide continues to rise… our victory is only delayed”.

“If there were not this unnatural agreement between Macon and the far left, the National Rally would be in an absolute majority,” she claimed. “The situation is untenable. Will Jean-Luc Mélenchon become prime minister?”

The original story continues below…

According to the initial Ipsos exit poll, the New Popular Front, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon — often dubbed France’s Bernie Sanders — will win between 172 and 192 seats, the most of any parliamentary group. The far-left did not secure enough votes for an absolute majority of 289.

Meanwhile, President Macron’s coalition is projected to win between 150 and 170 seats, meaning that he will likely have to pair with the far left to continue governing the country.

In a disappointing result, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), which won the first round of voting last week, was relegated to third place, with between 132 to 152 seats. Finally, the centre-right Les Républicains are projected to have won between 57 to 67 seats, Le Figaro reports.

Meta Defends Charging Users for Privacy

Meta last fall came up with an idea of how to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) (not to be confused with the Digital Services Act (DSA) — considered by critics to be a “censorship law”).

Namely, Meta announced at the time that in order to adhere to DMA, and allow an ad-free “experience” in the EU (but also in the European Economic Area, EEA, and Switzerland) Facebook and Instagram would offer subscriptions to privacy-minded users.

The problem with what Meta calls “a free, inclusive, ad-supported” internet is not just that ads are annoying — it’s that people actually do pay what turns out to be a pretty hefty price, i.e., with their sensitive personal data monetized by the giant for “personalized,” aka, targeted advertising.

Spain: Thousands Protest Over-Tourism in Barcelona, Urging Economic Reforms

More than 150 organizations and social movements took to the streets of Barcelona, Spain’s most visited city, to protest against over-tourism. Around 3,000 people participated in the demonstrations on Saturday evening, symbolically sealing off hotels and restaurant terraces, according to local authorities.

The protests in Barcelona follow similar actions in the Canary Islands and Mallorca, highlighting the growing concern over tourist overcrowding across Spain. Demonstrators chanted “tourists, go home” and called for measures to reduce tourism before the anticipated record-breaking summer season in Catalonia.

Marti Cusó, spokesperson for the Association of Neighbours of the Gothic Quarter, stated, “We want the city’s economic model to prioritize other much fairer economies. And for that, we consider that we have to decrease tourism.”

Barcelona, which attracts an average of 32 million visitors annually, many arriving on cruise ships, has been struggling with the impact of mass tourism. In response, the city council has voted to increase the tourist tax to €4 per person starting in October.

A local resident expressed concerns about the housing market, stating, “What worries me is what tourism and speculation entail, the speculation they are doing with the housing of the Spaniards. Spaniards have the right to decent housing.” The city council recently announced a plan to eliminate approximately 10,000 tourist flat licenses over the next five years, aiming to alleviate the national housing crisis, which is particularly severe in tourist-heavy cities like Barcelona.

This move reflects a broader trend of cities worldwide taking steps to mitigate the negative effects of mass tourism on local communities and infrastructure.

Starmer and his anti-Brexit government have claimed that it will not seek to reverse the will of the British people to withdraw from the European Union, however, seeking closer ties with the EU appears to be at the top of the agenda for the leftist government.

Despite the far-left New Popular Front winning the second round of elections, riots broke out in France after leftist radicals had gathered in anticipation of a potential victory of Marine Le Pen’s populist National Rally.

Ahead of the second round of voting on Saturday, the government mobilised 30,000 police officers, including 5,000 in Paris, in expectation of riots from the far-left if the populist right repeated its success in the first round of the snap elections called by French President Macron.

A Ukrainian Drone Triggers Warehouse Explosions in Russia as a War of Attrition Grinds on

KYIV, Ukraine — A village in a border region of western Russia was evacuated Sunday following a series of explosions after debris from a downed Ukrainian drone set fire to a nearby warehouse, local officials said.

Social media footage appeared to show rising clouds of black smoke in the Voronezh region while loud explosions could be heard in succession.

Gov. Aleksandr Gusev said that falling wreckage triggered the “detonation of explosive objects.” No casualties were reported, but residents of a nearby village in the Podgorensky district were evacuated, he said. Roads were also closed with emergency services, military and government officials working at the scene.

A Ukrainian security official told The Associated Press that a strike had been carried out on a warehouse storing ammunition in the village of Serhiivka in the Voronezh region.

Bombshell NYT Expose Details War Crimes by American-Led Volunteer Force in Ukraine

The last many weeks (or even months) of Ukraine coverage by mainstream media has seen a major shift. One might observe that Western reporters are actually starting to do their jobs for a change, and digging into to ‘inconvenient’ truths and stories which a year ago no outlet would have touched amid the general pro-Kyiv euphoria.

A military correspondent with The New York Times has issued the newest bombshell report this weekend which shines a spotlight on not just Ukrainian troops but American and foreign fighters who’ve volunteered with pro-Kyiv forces and have committed potential war crimes. The report, titled Killings of Surrendering Russians Divide an American-Led Unit, reveals how US troops are participating in units which conduct extra-judicial killings of Russians who have legitimately surrendered.

Much of the eyewitness accounts come from a German volunteer identified as Caspar Grosse, a medic in an all-foreign unit led by an American who says he witnessed clear war crimes and that his conscience has forced him to speak out.

Russia Vows to Respond After Ukrainian Drone Attack Sets on Fire Alleged Munitions Warehouse

(CNN) — Moscow has vowed to respond to Ukrainian attacks within its borders after a drone set on fire a warehouse allegedly storing munitions, prompting a state of emergency in Russia’s south-western Voronezh region.

The drone attack took place in a settlement in the Podgorensky district, Voronezh governor Aleksandr Gusev said Sunday. Ukrainian sources said the warehouse was targeted because it was being used to supply ammunition to Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.

“Several UAVs were detected and destroyed by on-duty air defense forces over the territory of the Voronezh region last night. A fire broke out at a warehouse due to the fall of their wreckage. Detonation of explosive items began in the Podgorensky district,” Gusev said.

He did not identify the settlement where the attack took place, but said a state of emergency had been declared there. No one was injured in the attack, but two elderly women were taken to hospital for checks, he said.

Rise in Stolen Singaporean ID Data Shows the Dangers of Digital ID

A recent advisory published by the Resecurity cybersecurity vendor exposes a trend now developing on the dark web — more and more stolen biometrics-based data is ending up in this corner of the internet.

These revelations, describing the increase in activity of this type as “significant,” highlight the case of Singapore, including its SingPass scheme.

At the same time, they confirm that the fears of the digital ID and age verification push sooner or later turning into a privacy nightmare.

In Singapore, every citizen and resident has a SingPass (Singapore Personal Access) digital ID account, which is touted by the authorities in the city-state as their “trusted digital identity” — not to mention a “convenient” one.

Hundreds in Canary Islands Protest Against Influx of Migrants

Hundreds protested on Saturday in the Canary Islands against an influx of migrants to the Spanish archipelago, which has welcomed more than 19,000 migrants since the beginning of 2024.

Located off the coast of north-west Africa, the Canary Islands have become an increasingly popular destination for people braving the perilous Atlantic crossing in the hope of finding a better life in Europe.

Carrying “Defend our neighbourhoods” and “Stop illegal immigration” placards, the demonstrators took to the streets of towns including Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with local media putting their numbers at several hundreds.

“This situation in the Canaries is unbearable,” Juan Manuel Garcia, who took part in the demonstration in Tenerife, told AFPTV. “The Canaries don’t have the means to support those who arrive,” the 70-year-old added.

Rudy Ruyman, who helped organise the demonstration, said the situation had become “a traffic in human lives”, warning that “the mafia is profiting from all the deaths at sea”.

Maxime Bernier Says New Female Head of Canadian Armed Forces is ‘Woke’ Choice Obsessed With ‘Gender Identity Nonsense’

Peoples Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier says the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieut.-Gen. Jenny Carignan, is a poor choice to lead the Canadian Armed Forces given her record of “promoting gender identity nonsense.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named Carignan as the first female CDS this week. She will be promoted to full general rank when she assumes her new role.

“The new boss of the Canadian Armed Forces appointed by Trudeau yesterday is the woke apparatchik who brought DEI rules and diversity hiring quotas, turned the CAF into an organization promoting gender identity nonsense, and introduced an ‘inclusive’ dress code so ridiculous it just had to be made more restrictive again,” Bernier posted.

Radical Betrayal: How Liberals & Neoconservatives Are Wrecking American Exceptionalism

    Paperback – December 1, 2023
    by Anders W. Edwardsson (Author)

For many, the election of Donald Trump in 2016 was a dream come true. Millions saw him as a redeemer destined to make America great again. For others, his election came as a shock and established forces and institutions immediately began to conspire to wreck his presidency. Now, years after leaving the White House, the frenzy to lock Trump up is turning the U.S. into a banana republic.

How can a single event provoke such strong reactions and dangerous outcomes? This book goes beyond the banalities of Trump haters, media bias, and academic prejudice to explain this phenomenon and answer underlying questions. It shows that to understand modern America, we must recall what the Founding Fathers wanted the country to become and compare it with what it has become.

In detail, this book identifies the origin of American Exceptionalism and tracks its role in the nation’s rise from a handful of breakaway colonies to a superpower surpassing the Roman Empire in wealth and influence. It also shows how America’s greatness is crumbling as the Founders’ vision has been corrupted by forces on both the left and the right.

Radical Betrayal is a must-read for everyone who wishes to understand the crisis happening in today’s America.

  4. I checked the article about the guy spending $444 for a week and a half food. Firstly, Trader Joes is a kind of luxury grocer, expensive. Secondly every item was a ready meal of some sort, not one ingredient to made a dish from scratch. This is a particularly spoiled member of society who needs to learn to cook.

    • Trader Joes is NOT a luxury grocer and it is not expensive. I have small income and TJ’s Is the place where I can find gourmet food at a low price. The have inported food from many countries. It does not have GMO food.

It is delicious and I can afford their prices.

Furthermore, Cassie, it is not YOUR business to demand anything from people who are just going about their day to shop for their food. They don’t need to learn to cook at all. YOU just have a bad attitude toward others.
