134-Year-Old American Furniture Chain Files for Bankruptcy, Closes All 553 Stores

Conn’s, a 134-year-old American furniture chain has filed for bankruptcy and is shuttering all of its 553 stores after experiencing a slowdown in recent years that affected both sales and liquidity.

According to a July 23 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filed in the Southern District of Texas, the company has started closing sales at several of its locations, and has asked the court to allow them to continue with the sales.

CEO Norman J. Miller said in another court filing that the company faced “significant headwinds” in recent years, which include “drastic shifts” in consumer behavior, as well as interest rate pressures, inflation, integration delays, and increased costs related to the store’s 2023-2024 merger.

Biden to Push for Constitutional Amendment Next Week to Reverse Trump Immunity Decision: Report

President Biden is set to propose several changes to the U.S. Constitution on Monday to make good on his promise to reform the Supreme Court, according to a report.

In a reversal from the president’s longstanding resistance to changes to the high court, Biden said on Wednesday that Supreme Court reform would be among his top priorities for the remainder of his term in office. Biden announced Sunday that he would not seek re-election after mounting pressure from Democratic Party officials who asked him to step aside after his widely panned debate performance in June.

The president is expected to propose setting term limits for justices on the Supreme Court, which would require a constitutional amendment, and establishing an enforceable code of ethics, which could be enacted by Congress, Politico reported.

Exclusive — Poll: Strong Majorities Blame Kamala Harris for Joe Biden’s Policies, Approval Crashing and Burning Already

Strong majorities of Americans blame Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democrat nominee for president in 2024, for outgoing President Joe Biden’s policies, polling that Breitbart News exclusively obtained shows.

The Senate Opportunity Fund asked 800 likely voters from July 22 to July 24 several questions about Democrats switching from Biden to Harris. Perhaps most interesting in the data is the little difference voters see between Harris and Biden regarding their actual policy records. The poll also delineates its sample down to “contested states,” with a sample size of 511 likely voters. Nationally, the margin of error is 3.5 percent, and, in contested states, it is 4.3 percent.

‘Firenado’ Hits California in Biggest Wildfire of the Year

A rare fire tornado has occurred in northern California amidst the state’s largest wildfire of the year—the Park Fire, which has consumed over 307,000 acres northeast of Chico since starting on Wednesday. As of Saturday morning, the fire was 0% contained, as reported by BBC.

Authorities arrested 42-year-old Ronnie Dean Stout, suspected of igniting the blaze by rolling a burning car into a gully near Alligator Hole in Butte County. Stout is currently held without bail as charges are determined.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Butte and Tehama counties, emphasizing the use of every resource to protect lives as the fire spreads, prompting mandatory evacuations, including the entire population of Cohasset.

Cal Fire reported the destruction of 134 structures, with 4,200 more at risk. Nearly 2,500 personnel, supported by helicopters and air tankers, are working to contain the blaze.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the northern Sacramento Valley due to high winds and low humidity, which may exacerbate the fire’s growth.

Meanwhile, Oregon’s Durkee Fire continues to burn at least 288,000 acres, and Canada faces severe wildfires affecting the historic town of Jasper in Alberta.

Fortune 500 Companies to Incur More Than $5 Billion in Losses From CrowdStrike Outage — and That’s Excluding Microsoft

The damage from the huge IT outage caused by CrowdStrike on machines running Microsoft software last week that brought air traffic to a standstill, left some hospitals unable to provide certain services, and rendered many businesses unable to operate is still being tallied, but the modeling and insurance services firm Parametrix has already come up with an estimated price tag — and it’s quite steep.

According to their calculations, the total direct financial loss that American Fortune 500 companies can expect to incur as a result of the fiasco is an incredible $5.4 billion — and that is not including Microsoft’s losses. They believe that cyber insurance will likely only cover somewhere from 10 to 20% of these losses, which would be between $540 million and $1.08 billion. They’re attributing this low coverage to the big risk retentions of many companies and the fact that a lot of them likely have low policy limits compared to the potential loss.

Kennedy Lawsuit Against Biden Administration’s Censorship Demands Heads to Lower Court

The Biden administration’s campaign to influence social media content censorship is being challenged in court, with a key lawsuit, Kennedy et al. v. Biden, temporarily paused by the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The appellate court has returned the matter to a lower court to determine the legal standing of the plaintiffs, including Children’s Health Defense (CHD) and its chairman, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This decision follows a recent Supreme Court ruling in a related case, Murthy v. Missouri, where it was concluded that the plaintiffs lacked the necessary standing.

In March 2023, Kennedy, CHD, and others initiated a class action lawsuit against President Joe Biden and various senior administration officials, accusing them of coercing major US social media platforms into silencing protected speech. This lawsuit parallels a separate case initiated in May 2022, Missouri v. Biden, which involves similar allegations by two states and five social media users against similar administration officials.

Man Warns About E-Cigarette Battery Risk After Pocket Explosion in Ogden Arcade

OGDEN — A man is warning Friday about the risk posed by e-cigarette batteries after a spare exploded in his pocket and shot across the room.

Christopher Kendall said it happened on Saturday while he was working as a security guard and greeting customers in the arcade area of Skinny Dogz.

“It was bad, it was really bad,” Kendall said. “I noticed my batteries on the floor, and I was like, ‘Wow, that actually happened.’“

It happened so fast that Kendall said he didn’t initially realize what had gone wrong.

“I heard a pop go off,” he said. “That’s when I looked down, and my pants (were) on fire.”

Surveillance cameras captured the apparent explosion of one of the spare e-cigarette batteries he was carrying in his pocket.

The video showed Kendall’s pants appear to spark, and then the battery shot like a flare across the room, striking a counter as a customer jumped away.

Muslim Family Slammed for Flying Taliban Flag Outside Their NYC Home: ‘Terrorist Supporters’

A Muslim family came under fire this week for brazenly hoisting a Taliban flag outside their Brooklyn home — only to remove the terror symbol after being called out by a local pol and grilled about it by The Post.

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn) posted an online video Tuesday showing herself outside a Brighton Beach home and ripping its occupants for displaying what has been the Afghanistan flag since the Taliban seized control of the country in 2021.

“We have terrorist supporters living amongst us,” says Vernikov in the video, which also shows a Palestinian flag flying below the black-and-white Taliban banner outside the Brighton 5th Street home.

Rutgers Professor Under Fire for Online Posts Lamenting Failed Trump Assassination

A Rutgers University professor who “hoped” the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump “inspired others” in since-deleted social media posts is now the subject of an internal review, The Post learned.

“Let’s hope today’s events inspire others,” the non-tenured Budd, whose LinkedIn indicates she first started working for her alma matter in 2001, wrote in a July 13 post.

Want a Starter Home? It’ll Cost You $1M in Over 200 US Cities

First-time homebuyers in the US are facing bleaker prospects as the number of cities with million-dollar starter homes has nearly tripled since 2019.

The typical “starter home” — those in the lowest third of home values in a given region — is worth at least $1 million in 237 cities, the highest number of cities ever. That compares to only 84 such cities in 2019, according to a new study from real estate marketplace Zillow.

California heads the list of most cities — 117, up from 53 in 2019 — in any state with a $1 million entry-level home price. New York is a distant second with 31, up from 13 in 2019.

Windfall: FBI Pays $2M to Strzok, Ex-Lover for Released Anti-Trump Texts

Authored by Luis Cornelio via Headline USA

The FBI will pay disgraced former FBI official Peter Strzok and his former lover Lisa Page millions in a settlement over the release of their anti-Trump text messages, CNN reported on Friday.

Strzok will receive $1.2 million, while Page will get $800,000 after the bureau released email exchanges that exposed their anti-Trump bias during the 2016 presidential campaign. Such bias ultimately ignited the now-defunct Russian collusion hoax probe.

The disturbing display of bias fueled concerns about political bias and discriminatory behavior against Trump, reaching a climax after FBI agents aggressively raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022.

The messages were first released by then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to counter selective leaks underminingpublic trust in the DOJ. Fast forward to 2024, the settlement stipulates that the release of the messages violated the Privacy Act.

Despite his own bias, Strzok claimed that the FBI released his text messages for political purposes.

“While I have been vindicated by this result, my fervent hope remains that our institutions of justice will never again play politics with the lives of their employees,” he claimed, ignoring the bias he exhibited during the Mueller investigation.

Special Counsel John Durham, appointed in 2020 by then-Attorney General Bill Barr, revealed that Strzok opened the investigation into allegations of Russian collusion despite his “hostile feelings toward Trump.”

Moreover, Durham’s report highlighted that the investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane, was initiated without interviewing those who provided the initial information or assessing internal FBI intelligence.

“Had it done so,” Durman noted, the FBI would have learned there was no evidence to back the Steele Dossier’s allegations.

AltStore PAL Launches in EU With New iPhone Apps, Including Banned Torrent Clients

In the EU, Apple has been forced to allow third-party iOS app stores, and several months after the rule came into effect, one of them, AltStore PAL, released the first apps.

Other than weakening the grip Apple has on what its users are allowed to use on their phones, the AltStore’s move is notable for including only one app that is already in the giant’s store.

Even more notably, Apple users in the EU can now install torrenting apps — the type of software that is banned from the official store, because Apple has chosen to associate this otherwise legal protocol and clients with “often” being used to infringe on copyright.

Czechia: Big Hell in a Small Apartment: Prague Police Rescue 38 Cats and Neighbors

The Prague Municipal Police reported a disturbing incident caused by an unstable tenant, affecting dozens of cats and many people. A landlord rented an apartment to a seemingly pleasant woman in her forties, who paid the deposit and rent initially. However, after a few months, payments stopped, the tenant became unreachable except for some strange letters, and a foul odor began spreading, driving other tenants away, Vinegret reported.

Months later, with a court order, the landlord entered the apartment to find a horrific scene. The police’s animal capture unit found the place filled with an overwhelming stench and scattered excrement. They began rescuing 38 stressed, dirty, and resistant cats, with a dozen hiding under a bathtub that had to be broken to reach them.

Despite respirators, the smell intensified, but eventually, all the cats were caught and taken to an animal shelter. There, they received medical care, clean beds, and food. The police hope for a better future for these rescued animals.

Finland: Over 100 Retail Stores Close in Central Helsinki Amid Changing Shopping Habits

In less than five years, over a hundred retail outlets have closed in the center of Helsinki, reports IS. The city center has lost its former appeal. Finns prefer to shop in other areas of the city, and many are simply economizing. The decrease in tourist traffic has also played a role.

According to a survey commissioned by the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce, there were 20% fewer retail stores in the center of Finland’s capital in 2023 than in 2019. The survey was conducted by the organization Kaupunkitutkimus TA and is based on data from Statistics Finland. Markku Lahtinen, a representative of the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce, describes the retail situation in central Helsinki as challenging.

“Since 2019, 137 retail stores have disappeared from the city center. Along with them, companies have lost about 200 million in turnover,” Lahtinen says in a press release.

In the survey, the center of Helsinki refers to addresses within the postal code zone 00100. According to the report, retail turnover in central Helsinki had not recovered to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2023. On the other hand, retail turnover near the center of Helsinki increased despite the pandemic in the early 2020s.

Lahtinen believes that to be dynamic and attractive, Helsinki’s center needs a universal structure of services and industries. This is necessary to attract shoppers to the central areas.

“Developing the car accessibility of the center along with improving public transportation is one of the important ways to ensure customer flow,” Lahtinen asserts.

France: Paris Terror Police Examine Unexploded Devices Left on Rail Network

The French authorities are analysing unexploded incendiary devices to track down the perpetrators of a co-ordinated series of arson attacks that paralysed the rail network before the Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday.

Security forces have found several devices in the Yonne region, between Paris and Lyon, left behind by two men who were thwarted by rail workers.

Investigators are also inspecting four unexploded devices found on May 8, the day the Olympic flame arrived in Marseille, on the high-speed rail line connecting Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. So far, no link has been confirmed with Friday’s attack.

France: Copyright Strikes Silence Paris Olympics Critics

The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, characterized by constant rain and technical issues and concluding with the Olympic flag being hung upside down, has sparked controversy and garnered criticism from multiple quarters. German Federal Government Maintains Secrecy on Nord Stream Investigation

The bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline in the Baltic Sea is the largest act of sabotage in European post-war history. Nevertheless, Berlin continues to refuse to publish interim results of the investigations, Berliner Zeitung writes.

This emerges from a response by the Federal Government to a major inquiry from the AfD, now published on the Bundestag’s website. The AfD parliamentary group had posed a major inquiry to the government on April 12, just a few weeks after Sweden and Denmark halted their investigations, asking about the missing investigation results. The AfD directed 99 questions to the Federal Government, listing all the inconsistencies they had noticed in the sluggish handling of the case. In their inquiry’s justification, the AfD criticized the government’s “demonstrative and provocative disinterest” as well as the persistent silence of the Federal Public Prosecutor General (GBA) regarding the status of the investigations.

The Federal Government has now declared in its response that it does not intend to “publish or present preliminary results or an interim outcome of the investigations, as this would endanger the purpose of the investigation.”

In response to the question of why the authorities have not yet offered a reward for useful information leading to the apprehension of the perpetrators, the Federal Government simply replied: “Based on the current course of the investigation, there is no need for this from a tactical investigative perspective.” The AfD demands a €50 million reward for information on the Nord Stream investigation.

The 32-page document reveals that the Federal Government admits that German authorities had not “secured the Nord Stream pipelines in any special manner.” According to the government’s response, no version of events is currently excluded, including a possible Russian “false flag” operation. The GBA is investigating all criminally plausible backgrounds of the sabotage acts without bias. For this reason, neither the GBA nor the Federal Government sees any reason to exclude specific circumstances or motives before the investigations are concluded, the statement says.

Regarding the question of potential involvement by American intelligence services or Ukraine in the pipeline attacks, it states: “The Federal Government has come to the conclusion, after careful consideration, that answering the question cannot be done for reasons of state welfare.”

Prior to the AfD inquiry, BSW Bundestag member Jessica Tatti had already submitted two inquiries to the Federal Government in July. She wanted to know what information the government had about foreign intelligence activities concerning influence on Nord Stream and how the government views the Chinese proposal to establish an international investigative commission under the United Nations.

The Interior Ministry responded briefly: “The Federal Government has no knowledge in the sense of the inquiry.” The Justice Ministry also kept it short: “The Federal Government does not support the proposal for an international investigation under the auspices of the United Nations.”

Tatti, however, considers the Chinese demand to be “absolutely worthy of support,” as she told the Berliner Zeitung. The two most plausible theories so far are those of American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, suggesting that U.S. Navy divers blew up the pipelines, and the research by various media indicating that a Ukrainian commando destroyed them. “In both cases, the question arises as to why the Federal Government does not vigorously push for this terrorist attack against the Federal Republic of Germany to be fully clarified with two of its closest allies,” said the BSW member.

German Electric Car Manufacturers Are on the Verge of Collapse

Recently, the world’s third-largest electric vehicle manufacturer, German company ZF Friedrichshafen, announced plans to cut up to a quarter of all jobs in Germany, which amounts to approximately 14,000 employees.

In the first half of 2024, sales of electric vehicles in Germany dropped by 16.4%, while in France and the UK, they increased. The billions of euros invested in this sector of production have yet to yield returns.

A survey conducted by Horvath revealed that 59% of automotive industry representatives said they plan to reduce their workforce in Germany over the next five years. Among them, 14% expect significant layoffs. The problem lies in the fact that electric vehicles are selling much worse than anticipated.

Experience from the United States shows that electric vehicle manufacturers require subsidies.

“The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has proven to be a very successful initiative. The IRA has given a huge boost to battery production in the US. The ‘traffic light’ coalition should learn from the United States,” said Sebastian Dullien, director of the Institute for Macroeconomics and Business Cycle Research, in a conversation with BILD.

Currently, electricity at charging stations is too expensive, making electric vehicles unprofitable. Furthermore, there are still too few charging stations available.

Volkswagen plans to cut around a thousand jobs at its electric vehicle plant in Zwickau. The manufacturer Continental has also announced plans for job reductions. Bosch noted that they “will not be able to avoid cuts in certain areas.”

Hungary’s Orban Says Russia Stands to Gain as ‘Irrational’ West Loses Power

BUDAPEST (Reuters) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Saturday Russia’s leadership was “hyper rational” and that Ukraine would never be able to fulfil its hopes of becoming a member of the European Union or NATO.

Orban, a nationalist in power since 2010, made the comments during a speech in which he forecast a shift in global power away from the “irrational” West towards Asia and Russia.

“In the next long decades, maybe centuries, Asia will be the dominant centre of the world,” Orban said, mentioning China, India, Pakistan and Indonesia as the world’s future big powers.

“And we Westerners pushed the Russians into this bloc as well,” he said in the televised speech before ethnic Hungarians at a festival in the town of Baile Tusnad in neighbouring Romania.

Joint US-Poland Military Exercises With F-16 Fighters Begin in Poland

Polish and American F-16 fighter jets began joint exercises in Poland yesterday, which will last until August 7. This was reported by the press service of the Polish Ministry of Defense.

As noted by the Polish defense ministry, the Aviation Detachment Rotation exercises began on Thursday, involving F-16 fighters from the 32nd Tactical Air Base and the 138th Fighter Wing of the US Air Force.

Netherlands: Explosive Found at Café in the Hague, Busy Traffic Square Cordoned Off

In The Hague, a large section of the Soestdijkseplein near the Zuiderpark has been closed following a report of a “suspected explosive device,” police have announced. A spokesperson announced that the square, considered an important link in The Hague’s road network, is “more or less completely closed.” Bus traffic across the square is also blocked.

Footage shows that the suspected explosive is attached to a shutter of a building. According to local media, it looks like a hand grenade. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) service is on-site to investigate the incident, the police spokesman said. The building affected was a commercial building, which is currently closed. The same building, a café, was the scene of an arson attack last year.

The police have created a large barrier in the area as a precaution, a spokesperson informed. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service of the Ministry of Defence (EOD) has secured the explosive, which has been taped to the door of the café with duct tape, AD reported.

They closed off a large part of the Soestdijkseplein near the Zuiderpark because of a suspicious package reported around 10:15 a.m. According to the police, as soon as the investigation is completed, the square, which is considered an important link in The Hague’s road network, can be reopened.

Polish Journalist Suspended for Calling ‘Imagine’ a ‘Vision of Communism’ During Olympic Opening

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The Polish state broadcaster on Saturday suspended a television journalist who, during the Olympic Games opening ceremony, reacted to a performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine” by saying it was a “vision of communism.”

TVP, the broadcaster, issued a statement Saturday saying that the journalist and sports commentator, Przemyslaw Babiarz, would not be allowed to comment on air anymore during this summer’s Games.

Lennon’s song asks to imagine no heaven or hell, no countries, and no possessions.

“This is a vision of communism, unfortunately,” Babiarz said during the grand opening ceremony along the Seine River in Paris on Friday evening — comments that immediately triggered controversy for those watching in Poland.

The EU Has Added American Neo-Nazis to Its List of Terrorist Groups

On Friday, July 26, the Council of the European Union announced the addition of the American neo-Nazi group The Base to its terrorist list, according to a statement from the EU Council.

The Base is a far-right extremist group involved in terrorist acts, founded in 2018 by Rinaldo Nazzaro—a former contractor for the FBI and the Pentagon.

The group promotes the idea of white supremacy and advocates for the establishment of ethnically homogeneous white states through violence. In 2021, The Base was designated as a terrorist organization in the UK and Canada.

Following the decision of the EU Council, assets and other financial resources or economic resources of The Base in EU countries are subject to freezing, and entities in the EU are prohibited from providing funds and economic resources to this group.

The list of terrorist individuals and organizations in the EU now includes 15 individuals and 22 legal entities and organizations.

UK: Tommy Robinson London Demo Sees Tens of Thousands Rally Against Censorship and Mass Migration

Tens of thousands took to the streets of London on Saturday for Tommy Robinson’s “Unite the Kingdom” rally against political censorship and mass migration.

Robinson, who rallied tens of thousands last month in Parliament Square for a “patriotic” demonstration, once again drew large crowds, with aerial pictures of Trafalgar Square on Saturday showing a sea of people waving British, English, Israeli, and even Donald Trump flags.

The anti-grooming gang activist told the crowd: “To fight is in our DNA, its in every single one of you, its in your children. The British are known throughout history as fighters, the sooner we remember it, the sooner we realise every one of us have it, more and more of us need to stand up to them.”

Vienna Police Trial Tasers Amid Consideration for Nationwide Adoption in Austria

Austria is considering adopting the Taser electro-shock weapon across its entire police force. Police officers are trialling the weapon system in three high-crime areas of the capital, Vienna, including the Praterstern subway station and the 10th district.

Initially, around 70 Taser units will be procured, as announced by the police on Thursday. “It’s not like I’m putting a Taser in my holster and now I can do whatever I want. Now I have a wonder weapon. Past operations have shown that it is not a wonder weapon,” said the head of division for police special forces, Ernst Albrecht. “It’s not a magic wand that allows you to freeze a situation. But it is a very difficult use case. Therefore, we want to make very, very sure that the training will be very intensive.”

A police spokesperson rejected claims that the potential adoption of the weapon was due to increased violence between migrant gangs in the country. Instead, he said the weapon system was part of a broader push to further modernise the equipment of the Austrian police, according to federal police chief Michael Takacs.

Austria has been hesitant in the past to roll out the Taser, which is popular with police forces across the world, due to reports of people dying after getting electro-shocked. Special units like WEGA and EKO have been using the weapon since 2012 with 700 units in use today. Now the plan is to equip every officer in the country.

Former commander of Austria’s special police unit WEGA, Ernst Albrecht, said the Taser could be useful in certain situations. “The Taser is very useful when it comes to people who want to hurt themselves. There are situations where we as the police are powerless because we know that when we take three steps towards that person he’s going to slit his throat. In such a case the Taser might be a possibility,” he explained.

If the Vienna trial is successful, Austria could purchase up to 34,000 Tasers for its police force.

Who Was Behind the Sabotage of France’s Railway Network? Here’s What We Know

France is still facing travel disruption a day after saboteurs targeted high-speed railway lines in an attack coinciding with the start of the Olympics. As operators try to get service back to normal, a key question remains — who was responsible?

Authorities are investigating what outgoing French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal called a “coordinated” effort. He said that intelligence services and internal security forces are involved in inquiries and urged caution over jumping to conclusions.

French police will know “quite quickly who is responsible” for the attacks, the country’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Saturday. They recovered an “amount of evidence” following the operation, Darmanin told CNN affiliate France 2.

No-one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but given their scale, timing and precision, it is clear they are more than just random acts of vandalism.

Netanyahu Hurries Home After Rocket Attack on Town in Israeli-Controlled Golan Heights Kills 10

TEL AVIV, Israel — A rocket strike Saturday at a soccer field killed at least 11 children and teens, Israeli authorities said, in the deadliest strike on an Israeli target along the country’s northern border since the fighting between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah began. It raised fears of a broader regional war.

Israel blamed Hezbollah for the strike in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, but Hezbollah rushed to deny any role. Israel’s military called it a “very serious” event and said it would act accordingly.

“Hezbollah fired a rocket at children playing soccer in northern Israel. It then lied and claimed they did not carry out the attack,” said the military’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari. He called it the deadliest attack on Israeli civilians since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that sparked the war in Gaza. He said 20 others were wounded.

“There is no doubt that Hezbollah has crossed all the red lines here, and the response will reflect that,” Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz told Israeli Channel 12. “We are nearing the moment in which we face an all-out war.”

Children Dead in Attack on Football Pitch in Israeli-Occupied Golan

Twelve children and young adults have been killed and dozens injured after a rocket hit a football pitch they were playing on in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Israeli authorities say.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said a rocket fired by the powerful Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fell on the Druze town of Majdal Shams — a claim denied by the group.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed retaliation against Hezbollah, saying the group would “pay a heavy price”.

The incident has the potential to trigger an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, whose forces have regularly exchanged fire since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war in October.

Ukraine Said to Claim Attack on Murmansk Airfield, Notes Russian Helicopter Losses

Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR) on July 27 claimed its drones attacked the Olenya airfield in Russia’s far northern Murmansk region, saying it struck a TU-22M3 strategic bomber, and said three Russian army helicopters had been destroyed in Russian territory over the previous week.

The claims appeared to be an apparent effort to demonstrate Russia’s ongoing losses in the 30th month of Moscow’s full-scale invasion without directly claiming responsibility in all cases.

The Ukrainians’ assertions have not been confirmed by Russian officials or independent sources.

Ukraiskaya Pravda quoted an unnamed source claiming the alleged “hit” on the Olenya airfield where the bomber was located.

Mastering ‘The Art of Brainwashing,’ China Intensifies AI Censorship

China has once again extended its policy of censorship and surveillance as it looks to keep artificial intelligence (AI) models in check even as it races to advance the ever-expanding technology.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has introduced more regulative measures to make sure its home-based tech companies adhere to the party’s ideological rules.

All AI firms are required to participate in a government review which analyzes the companies’ large language models (LLMs) to ensure they “embody core socialist values,” as first reported by the Financial Times last week.

Venezuela Opposition Seeks to End 25 Years of Socialist Power in Sunday Vote

CARACAS/SAN CRISTOBAL (Reuters) —Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and her coalition’s candidate Edmundo Gonzalez have commanded enthusiastic crowds during their campaign to unseat President Nicolas Maduro and end 25 years of ruling party dominance.

But uncertainty remains about how Sunday’s election will play out, with Maduro — whose 2018 reelection is considered fraudulent by the United States, among others — sounding a confident note and opposition figures and analysts warning of possible underhandedness.

Gonzalez has attracted significant support, even from former supporters of the ruling party, but the opposition and some observers have questioned whether the vote will be fair, saying decisions by electoral authorities and the arrests of some opposition campaign staff are meant to create obstacles.

Polish Bill Allowing Border Guards to Use Firearms Sparks Human Rights Concerns

Polish lawmakers were set to vote on Friday on a bill making it easier for security services to use weapons against migrants on the Belarus border, legislation that has public support but that critics say infringes human rights.

The debate pits Donald Tusk’s pro-European Union government against activists who had hoped he would shun the previous administration’s approach to the crisis on the bloc’s eastern frontier.

Poland has been dealing with what it says is a form of hybrid warfare on the border since 2021, when large numbers of migrants started trying to cross illegally.

Both Warsaw and the EU say Belarus and its ally Russia have been orchestrating the crisis by flying in migrants from the Middle East and Africa, something Minsk and Moscow deny.

The situation took a tragic turn in June when a 21-year-old Polish soldier died after being stabbed through the border fence, provoking a wave of grief and anger. Many Poles were also irate when it was reported that soldiers who had fired warning shots on the border were arrested and led away in handcuffs, an incident that cost a prosecutor his job.

The bill would explicitly allow security services to use force including firearms on the frontier in certain emergency situations. Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said it would send “a clear signal of support to people in uniform fighting aggression at the border.” An IBRiS survey for the Rzeczpospolita daily indicated that 85.7% of Poles thought soldiers should be able to use weapons to repel migrants who use force.

However, activists are dismayed. “I believe the government … stepped into the shoes of its predecessors because it was convenient,” said Marcin Wolny, a lawyer from the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

Human rights advocates say the bill may prevent proper scrutiny of incidents.

The government rejects such arguments, and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has said the migrants are not refugees seeking asylum but “hordes of bandits who … try to attack or attack Polish soldiers.”

France Committed National ‘Suicide’ With Woke Olympic Opening Ceremonies, Says Ex-Cabinet Minister

The opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics, which featured a transgender parody of the Last Supper while highlighting a controversial Muslim performer, have been branded as a national “suicide” by a former French government cabinet member.

While the Olympics were supposedly set to mark a political truce in France, which remains in limbo following President Emmanuel Macron’s snap elections that left the country without an actual government, the deeply divided country saw rage and elation — depending on political affiliation — over the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Saturday evening.

Dubbed the “gayest ever” games, the opening ceremony sparked condemnation for promoting paganism and openly mocking Christianity with a trans interpolation of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ.

Former French Culture Secretary Philippe de Villiers said that the opening ceremonies were a “shame,” adding: “We are committing the suicide of our country in front of the whole world.”

Judge Permanently Blocks Part of Florida’s ‘Stop WOKE Act’ as Unconstitutional on First Amendment Grounds

A federal judge on Friday permanently blocked part of Florida’s “Stop Woke Act” that was pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and other GOP lawmakers to ban critical race theory training in the workplace and in education.

Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker granted a permanent injunction against the part of the law that prohibited race-related training in private workplaces, ruling that the 2022 law violated the First Amendment.

The “Stop Wrongs To Our Kids and Employees Act,” otherwise known as the “Stop WOKE Act,” sought to ban teachings or business practices that tell individuals that members of one ethnic group are inherently racist and should feel guilty of past actions committed by people of that ethnic group.

It also prohibits pushing the idea that a person was either privileged or oppressed based on their race or gender. The law further bars the notion that discrimination is acceptable to achieve diversity.

Meet the French Theater Director Behind the Olympics’ Drag Queens, Same-Sex Foreplay, Queer Last Supper Opening Ceremony

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris kicked off Friday with an opening ceremony that left many stunned and repulsed — drag queens cavorting in the streets, raunchy same-sex foreplay, and a gender-queer re-enactment of The Last Supper.

There was even a bearded “woman” crawling around on all fours in a provocative blue bustier.

Who was responsible for the unfolding artistic atrocity? Meet Thomas Jolly, a theater and opera director who was little-known outside of France before Friday’s broadcast — which was viewed by more than a billion people worldwide — turned him into a global curiosity.

In interviews prior to Friday’s broadcast, the openly gay Thomas Jolly gave no indication that he would be turning the Opening Ceremony into a Pride parade. But he did emphasize the importance of inclusion and representation.

Nebraska Supreme Court Upholds Law Restricting Care for Transgender Youth and Abortion

The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a law combining abortion restrictions with measures limiting gender-affirming health care for minors does not violate the state’s single-subject constitutional amendment, as reported by AP.

While the court recognized that abortion and gender-affirming care are distinct medical types, it concluded that both fall under the broader category of medical care, thus complying with the state’s rule.

The ruling followed a lawsuit by the ACLU representing Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, which challenged the controversial hybrid law passed last year. Initially, Republican lawmakers proposed separate bills for a six-week abortion ban and restrictions on transgender care. After the six-week ban faced a filibuster, a 12-week abortion ban was added to the transgender care bill.

The combined legislation sparked significant debate and led to an extensive filibuster in the legislature. The ACLU had argued that the separate introduction of the bills indicated they should be treated independently, but the state maintained they both pertained to health care.

As of now, at least 25 states have enacted laws limiting gender-affirming care for transgender minors, facing various legal challenges. Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, many Republican-governed states have moved to enforce new abortion restrictions, while Democratic states aim to safeguard access.

The Polish Sejm Has Reintroduced a Bill on the Decriminalization of Abortions

On Friday, July 26, a proposal to amend the Penal Code, which provides for partial decriminalization of abortions, was submitted to the Polish Sejm for the second time after a previous vote failed by a narrow margin, as reported by RMF FM.

The bill on partial decriminalization of abortions was submitted by deputies from “The Left,” “Civic Platform,” “Poland 2050,” and one deputy from the Polish People’s Party. This is the same bill that the Sejm rejected during a vote on July 12. At that time, the decision was defeated with 218 votes “against,” while 215 deputies supported it and two abstained.

The document proposes to repeal two provisions of the Penal Code related to abortions performed with the woman’s consent. As a result, there would be no criminal liability for terminating a pregnancy within 12 weeks, as well as in cases of “high probability of severe and irreversible fetal defects or incurable diseases threatening its life.”

The date for the re-vote on the document in the Sejm is still unknown.

Polls indicate that the majority of Poles support allowing abortions in cases of serious threat to the life or health of the mother, as well as in cases of fetal defects.

  1. Marion Marechal is wrong. It does speak for France. The inmates have taken over the asylum on worldwide television. Kinda like Biden going demented at the debates… for the whole world to see…

  2. I once read that the catholic church had its own ahem problem solvers, like Ninjas, SEALs etc. No, not the Inquisition. They got rid of them a long time ago.
    I bet they regret that.

  3. Tommy Robinson is arrested again after the demonstration. Possibly on terrorism charges or powers given their government under counter terrorism powers. What the actual charges are, are not clear.

  4. The Olympic opening ceremony performances showcased the very best that Paris has to offer. Book you next family vacation now! Leather-clad, mouthball-gagged operators are standing buy.
