Germany is Running Out of Money and Debt Levels Are Exploding, Warns Country’s Finance Minister
German Finance Minister Christian Lindner is warning his own government that state finances are quickly growing out of hand, and the government needs to change course and implement austerity measures. However, the dispute over spending is only expected to escalate, with budget shortfalls causing open clashes among the three-way left-liberal coalition running the country.
With negotiations kicking off for the 2025 budget, much is at stake. However, the picture has been complicated after the country’s top court ruled that the government could not shift €60 billion in money earmarked for the coronavirus crisis to other areas of the budget, with the court noting that the move was unconstitutional.

A Long Island man accused of slugging a New York City police officer in Times Square allegedly punched his parole officer in the face just three days after making bail.
The assault prompted Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Felicia Mennin to boost 24-year-old Michael Thomas’ bail to $75,000 during a court hearing on Thursday.
Thomas, of Great Neck, was previously bailed out by his mom, who ponied up his $10,000 bond at the time of his arraignment last month on a charge of second-degree assault on a police officer, prosecutors said.

Climate Protesters Interrupt an Enemy of the People Performance
Climate-change protesters from Extinction Rebellion interrupted the second act of Broadway’s An Enemy of the People at Thursday night’s show, shouting phrases like, “No theater on a dead planet.” Several members of the cast, like Michael Imperioli, who plays Peter Stockmann, helped get the protesters out of the theater while in character. He can be seen yelling “Liars!” to the protesters as ushers escort them out. It caused some audience members to think it was a part of the play, as the show had invited audience members onto the stage for the town-hall scene. The 1882 play, starring Jeremy Strong, Imperioli, and Victoria Pedretti follows Strong as Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a medical officer who threatens to expose harmful bacteria found in the town spa but ends up becoming the enemy of the townspeople. Strong stayed in character as well but seemingly did not interact with the protesters, as Dr. Thomas would most likely agree with the protesters anyway.

Austrian Supermarket Giant Spar Turns to EU Concerning Hungary’s ‘Unfair’ Taxes
Austrian supermarket chain Spar has accused the Hungarian government of breaking EU law to cut food prices and called on Brussels to mitigate the devastating impact of the government’s measures, the Financial Times reported.
The supermarket chain claims that the Hungarian government’s 2022 special tax is discriminatory and breaches a number of EU laws, including on the free movement of goods. In its complaint to the EU, Spar wrote that the special tax and other measures aimed at reducing food prices are clearly incompatible with EU law because they “violate the principle of free movement of goods, freedom of establishment and the Charter of Fundamental Rights.”
According to the complaint, the government’s interference has increased Spar’s costs by around €90 million (3.5 billion forints) and will cause a loss of nearly €50 million (1.9 billion forints) for its Hungarian business in 2023. Spar is the second-largest retail chain in Hungary by turnover.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Polish President Andrzej Duda met U.S. President Joe Biden in the White House on Tuesday on the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO. After the meeting, Tusk announced that on Friday he will be in Berlin to attend an emergency meeting of the Weimar Triangle, a regional format of France, Germany, and Poland created in 1991. At the summit, they will discuss the current conflict in Ukraine and what was discussed in the meeting with the U.S. president.
Tusk said that the current situation is “fraught with danger,” but that the confirmation of the U.S. commitment to NATO was important and must guide the actions of the nations in the Weimar Triangle.
According to the Polish prime minister, “the focus on this triangle — Paris, Berlin, and Warsaw — will increasingly grow.”

Israel Denies Palestinian Claim Its Forces Killed 20 Near Gaza Aid Distribution Center
The Palestinian Health Ministry accused Israeli forces of launching an attack near an aid distribution point in war-wracked northern Gaza, killing 20 people and wounding 155. The Israeli military said Friday that Palestinian gunmen opened fire in that attack and that none of its forces fired toward the waiting crowd or the aid convoy.
Some of those in the crowd near the Kuwaiti Roundabout, the aid distribution point, were run over by the trucks, the military said. The Israeli forces were securing a convoy of 31 aid trucks when the violence erupted late Thursday, it added.
Meanwhile, an aid ship loaded with some 200 tons of food was seen approaching Gaza’s shores on Friday morning in a mission to inaugurate a sea route from Cyprus to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the enclave, five months into the war.

Doha Hunts for Whistleblowers Who Revealed Qatar’s Funding of ISIS
Via The Cradle
Qatar National Bank (QNB) and Qatar Charity (QC) are attempting to uncover the identities of confidential sources that supplied documents to lawyers representing the family of murdered US journalist Steven Sotloff, which allege the financial institutions — acting at the behest of Qatar’s royal family — wired hundreds of thousands of dollars to the ISIS judge who ordered Sotloff’s execution.
QNB and QC filed an application on March 12 in the US to obtain “limited discovery” of the law firm representing Sotloff’s family, specifically regarding the names of those who provided the bank records linking Doha to the murder. In an email to Bloomberg, the general counsel for QNB confirmed the filing and said the bank “is the victim of an effort to tarnish its reputation” and plans to hold the individuals “to account to the fullest extent of the law.” Sotloff and another US journalist, James Foley, were beheaded in 2014 by ISIS in Syria. The terrorist group published videos of its executions online directed at US government officials.

Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine on Friday of aiming to disrupt Russia’s presidential election by shelling Russian territory and using 2,500 armed soldiers to try to pierce his country’s borders, and vowed to punish Kyiv for its actions.

Millions of Russians cast their ballots across the country’s 11 time zones at the start of the three-day election, which is almost certain to hand Putin six more years in the Kremlin.

NYC Reaches Deal on ‘Right to Shelter’ Mandate as Migrant Crisis Reaches Tipping Point
New York City will be allowed to continue limiting shelter stays under a settlement struck Friday in the legal fight over the “right to shelter” mandate — but will still be on the hook to house the thousands of migrants pouring into the Big Apple each week.
Under the deal reached by the Mayor Eric Adams administration and the Legal Aid Society, the city will essentially be allowed to limit whether a single adult migrant can reapply for shelter after their 30-day stay expires.
After their 30 days is up, anyone can reapply but only those who meet a “non-exhaustive” list of “extenuating circumstances” — such as having a medical condition or disability — will be approved on a case-by-case basis, according to the terms of the settlement.

Marriage Promotes ‘White Supremacy, ‘ According to White University Professor
“Marriage fundamentalism” promotes the ideas of “White supremacy,” according to a White George Mason University professor.
Professor Bethany Letiecq wrote in the Journal of Marriage and Family about her theory “that marriage fundamentalism, like structural racism, is a key structuring element of White heteropatriarchal supremacy.”
“Marriage fundamentalism can be understood as an ideological and cultural phenomenon, where adherents espouse the superiority of the two-parent married family,” she wrote. “But it is also a hidden or unacknowledged structural mechanism of White heteropatriarchal family supremacy that is essential to the reproduction and maintenance of family inequality in the United States.”
