Al-Azhar: No Takfir Against the Islamic State

The following pronouncement originated with Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Rulings by Al-Azhar are instructive, because there is no higher authority on Sunni Islamic doctrine. The institution is the closest equivalent to the Vatican that can be found in Islam.

Al-Azhar has now declined to pronounce takfir against the Islamic State, which would have placed the Caliph and his followers outside of Islam. This raises an important question: if Al-Azhar — whose scholars know more about Sunni Islam than anyone else in the world — will not anathematize ISIS, how can dilettantes such as Barack Obama and David Cameron declare so confidently that the Islamic State “has nothing to do with Islam”?

Al-Arabiya published an article about the ruling by Al-Azhar. Ritamalik has kindly translated it from the Arabic, and includes this introductory note:

Al-Azhar refused to pronounce takfir (Islamic anathema) on ISIS. However, their reasoning is really creative.

They basically say that nobody is outside of Islam unless he himself says he is. But the funny thing is, all these restrictions that they now suddenly feel in the business of anathematising ISIS because of have in the past always been completely absent whenever they rushed to pronounce takfir on anyone who wanted to somehow “reform” (water down) Islam or modernise the Quran or the Hadith. They just pronounced the takfir with no qualms about it, and the poor “reformer” fellow usually was put in prison or killed by vigilantes or went into hiding.

But now suddenly “moderate” middle-of-the-road Al Azhar cannot pronounce takfir on any ISIS member unless he renounces his shahada, the declaration that “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet”!

Below is the translation of the article. Ritamalik’s comments and explanatory remarks are in parentheses:

Al Azhar refused to pronounce takfir (anathema) on the group ISIS, and stressed the fact that a Muslim can not be denounced as kafir, regardless of his sins. Al Azhar announced on Thursday that during his speech in the assembly against violence and extremism at Noble Al Azhar, Sheikh Ibrahim Salih Al Husseini, the Mufti of Nigeria, didn’t agree to pronounce takfir on ISIS and groups like them, but explained their actions are not actions of the followers of Islam, but come forth from those who are not Muslims.

The statement pointed out that ISIS is neither explicitly nor implicitly anathematised by Sheikh Al Husseini’s phrase. All that he said was that: “Those (religious) innovators who act in a an extremist fashion are tainted with corruption, and the extremists and ISIS contrary to their claim to the Caliphate are nothing but muharibun (literally meaning ‘fighter’, but in Islamic lingo it means ‘fighters against Allah and his religion’) who spread corruption, indecency, and murder, and then they proceed to pronounce takfir on other people who try to check their thuggery and prostitution. And indeed their (religious) innovation is greater than those of the ‘Kharijites’ (a group among the first generation of Muslims who turned on and were put down by Ali Ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Caliph, and were famous for pronouncing takfir on other Muslims and killing them under that pretext), who fought Musilm/Kafirs, and killed Muslims, and pronounced them kafir because of their actions.”

A Moderate Muslim Speaks

Yesterday Rick Gibbons, an Ottawa talk show host on CFRA radio, featured an interview with Imam Mohamad Jebara, the Head Master and Resident Scholar at the Cordova Academy in Ottawa.

Imam Jebara is a calm, reasonable, well-spoken “moderate” Muslim, just the sort of Islamic guest that most media people are eager to interview. Mr. Gibbons was no exception, and he lavished a lot of uncritical gushing attention on his culturally enriching interlocutor. His guest reassured him once again that Islam is really A-OK, and that he and other kuffar have nothing to fear from it. The radio host seemed relieved to learn that all the horrors loosed on the world in the name of Allah actually have nothing to do with Islam.

Newsletter #157 — The Red and Black Fashion Statement of Jew Hatred

Students at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with the help of their faculty advisor Brian Barber established the first Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter in Tennessee. Their alumnus, Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou, was the keynote speaker at SJP’s 4th annual conference held this year at Tufts University.

Sekou at 2014 SJP conference

It’s fitting that an organization focused on the destruction of Israel would choose Sekou to speak. He and his wife Karlene Griffiths Sekou are both involved with the U.S. BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) against Israel, the end goal of which is to eliminate the Jewish homeland.

Speaking at the SJP conference, Sekou wore the red and white keffiyeh which is associated with Saudis, Palestinians and terrorists.

The red and white keffiyeh is popular with Somali al-Shabaab jihadists.

Members of the al-Farooq mosque in Nashville, also wear the red and white keffiyeh, while some opt for the black and white keffiyeh popularized by Yasir Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

Islamization: The Thousand-Year Crime Against Germany and the Peoples of Europe

How Socialists intend to destroy Europe with Islam’s help

Islamization: The Thousand-Year Crime Against Germany and the Peoples of Europe

A Reckoning With the Responsible Parties

Cicero on the betrayal of people and country:

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not as a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. Fear the murderer less. Fear the traitor. He is the true plague.”

Germany and Europe: In the Stranglehold of Socialism for over 100 Years

For 100 years now, a fight to the death has been raging in Germany and Europe. This battle is broken up into discrete, historical episodes by the responsible parties, so that it cannot be discerned as such. Yet these episodes are all closely interwoven, and have only one aim. That is, the destruction of Germany, the defeat of European nationality and the dissolution of the nucleus of all societies — the family. What is responsible for this life-and-death battle is an ideology which portrays itself to the outside world as an ideology of peace, of social well-being and of the end of exploitation of people by other people.

But everywhere where this ideology has come to power in its diverse experiments, it has spread nothing but misery, poverty, fear and horror. This ideology began its victorious march in Germany at the end of the 19th century, spread across half the world and has ruled Germany and half of the European continent almost uninterrupted, except for a few years, since 1918-1919. Its name is socialism.

Arch Traitor August Bebel: His Treason and the SPD (Social Democrats) led Germany into the First World War

August Bebel, chair of the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany) was already anticipating the defeat of Germany as a nation state. In his capacity as a Reichstag deputy and party head, he betrayed sensitive military secrets to England — at that time, the arch-rival of the German Empire. In 1911, he passed on the false (!) information that a German surprise attack was planned against the British fleet, which led to frantic political activity and a fleet-building program of unprecedented scope. Bebel hoped to force Germany into a conflict with the world power Great Britain, from which Germany, by his calculation, would emerge so weakened that it would be “ripe” for a socialist revolution.

Which indeed happened. With no good cause, the SPD signed the war credits authorization in 1911, and opened the way to the bloodiest war to date — the first World War in history. A war which would presumably never have happened — or at least not in the form it did — absent Bebel’s high treason and his party’s signature on the war credits authorization. And the leftist powers knew, as always, how to make the German Empire responsible for the outbreak of this war.

After the end of the war, Germany had to accept a humiliating peace treaty which imposed the loss of great portions of its territory, as well as a war indemnity the like of which — qualitatively and quantitatively — had never before been seen, and which a “re-united” Germany paid off just a few years ago. The Treaty of Versailles prepared the way for the next catastrophe of the century — the Second World War — and made the First and Second World Wars in hindsight the equivalent of a second Thirty-Years’ War in German history.

Already in the Weimar Republic, the Left Intended to Bolshevize Germany

Photo from Kiel municipal archives most likely depicts the funeral ceremony for those who fell in the revolution on November 10, 1918.

The left — consisting largely of adherents of the SPD and USPD (Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany) — went to work immediately after the end of WWI in 1918/19 (the “November Revolution”) to “bolshevize Germany in the image of the Soviet Union, establishing “workers’ and soldiers’ councils” in numerous Germany cities (the Bremen Council Republic, the Munich Council Republic, the Soldiers’ Council of Ludwigsburg, etc.), with the goal of making all of Germany into an autonomous soviet republic.

Al-Nusra Leader Swears Allegiance to Caliph Al-Baghdadi

Note: This video of Abu Ali al-Shishani was originally posted last night (or rather early this morning) on a different channel, and was subsequently taken down. The new version is hosted by another service. Let’s hope it stays up for a while this time.

The Al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State are the two most powerful jihad groups in Syria. Until recently they were rivals, and sometimes fought against each other.

On November the 13th 2014, the two groups declared themselves in operational alliance. They promised to stop fighting each other, and said they would coordinate their attacks in some areas of northern Syria, in alliance against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Their cooperation fell short of unifying the rival groups, and experts on the conflict in the Middle East expected that the alliance would in all likelihood soon fall apart.

However, the opposite seems to be the case. In the following video you’ll hear Abu Ali al-Shishani (“The Chechen”), a leader of the Al-Nusra Front, declare his allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Caliph of the Islamic State.

The context for the clip is that Mr. al-Shishani is threatening Lebanon and the Shiites for the arrest of his wife and children. In the original news stories about the arrest published early this month, the Muslima in question was said to be the wife of al-Baghdadi. But Abu Ali al-Shishani says that the woman being held in detention is in fact his wife.

Vienna Protests the Persecution of Christians

This time last year we reported on the march for solidarity with persecuted Christians, organized by Christian Solidarity International in Vienna. This year’s reprise of the march occurred yesterday, December 10. Henrik Ræder Clausen was on hand, and sends the following report.

A subtitled video will be available later.

Vienna protests the persecution of Christians
By Henrik Ræder Clausen

On December 10th, the United Nations Human Rights Day, more than twenty Christian organisations in Austria took to the street protesting the sharply increasing persecution of Christians throughout the world. In the morning, a press conference about the situation was organized, and at nightfall there was a torch- and banner-bearing march through the heart of Vienna. The march went from the famous Opera House to the equally famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which hosted a prayer mass for the persecuted Christians.

A mixed bag press conference

The key organizer Christian Solidarity International (CSI) was the host of the press conference in the morning. Here Dr. Elmar Kuhn (CSI), Kurt Igler (Open Doors), Johann Marte (Pro Oriente), Herbert Rechberger (Kirche in Note) and Martin Kugler (OIDAC) explained the plight of Christians in various countries. For obvious reasons the newly Islamic State and its systematic cleansing of Christians from the Middle East was in focus, but the panelists also discussed the situation in North Korea, as well as other challenging trends for Christians these days.

After the interventions about the sufferings of the Christians, CSI expressed their great joy in having a Muslim on the panel, specifically Dr. Ednan Aslan, a well known professor of Turkish origin. Dr. Aslan spoke in great detail about various Islamic topics, and stressed that what Islamic State does in Syria and Iraq is a perfect match with the teachings given by Saudi-sponsored imams and mosques. There is no significant ideological difference between IS and the Saudi interpretation of Islam.

He went on to reject the idea of the Koran as being literally a perfect, divine scripture, and said that the complicated origins of the book in Arabia mean that it contains omissions and mistakes, and that while it is inspired by Allah, it remains the creation of humans. It is precisely this, according to Dr. Aslan, that provides a source of hope: By investing sufficient resources in new Islamic organisations, it is possible that the Koran and the other Islamic scripture (the Bukhari hadith collection was mentioned as an example) can be reinterpreted to fit into modern, liberal societies. But when questioned by the CSI about it, he could give no actual suggestions on how to reinterpret words such as ‘decapitate’, not to mention how to give any such new interpretations of clear and literal words real authority. He was also not able to explain why scripture with such obvious contents should be permitted in religious organisations.

A march with clear messages

Fjordman: Is a Country Merely Empty Space?

Fjordman’s latest essay has been published at FrontPage Mag. Some excerpts are below:

Fredrik Reinfeldt was Prime Minister of Sweden from 2006 to 2014. His center-right coalition government suffered a defeat in the general elections of September 2014. Allegedly conservative Prime Minister Reinfeldt stated that the native Swedish culture was merely barbarism; everything good was imported from abroad. He said this in 2006 following a visit to the town of Södertälje, near Stockholm.

In September 2005 a police station in Södertälje was hit by shots from an automatic weapon, following a confrontation between aggressive immigrant youths and the local police. The trouble started after a Swedish girl was called a “whore” and reacted negatively to the epithet.

If a leading politician had said that African, Asian or Islamic culture was “merely barbarism,” there would have been a huge public outcry and calls for his immediate resignation due to “racism.” His career might have been over. Yet disrespecting and mocking the traditions of Europeans is apparently no problem.

Addressing Unacceptable Hate Speech Against Muslims in Quebec

The Quebec franchise of the infamous Human Rights Commission in Canada has decided that Quebec’s “hate speech” provisions don’t go far enough, and want to broaden them. They want the laws to cover “incitement”, “discrimination”, and “harassment” against a group, even when there is no identifiable individual victim or victims. The aim is to codify something similar to the European norm, as represented by the Swedish hets mot folkgrupp (incitement against a group), the “racially aggravated” Section 5 public order offenses in the UK, or “denigration of religious beliefs of a legally recognized religion” in Austria.

Needless to say, Muslims are the only cited example of a potentially offended group.

When Are We Going To Wake Up?

In the following Fox News video segment, Sean Hannity talks to Richard Miniter, a prominent author and expert on terrorism, and Bo Dietl, a former NYPD detective, about a spate of recent “lone wolf” terrorist attacks in Canada and the USA.

Specifically discussed are:

  • Zale Thompson, a.k.a. Zaim Farouq Abdul-Malik, who attacked four policemen with a hatchet in Jamaica, Queens on October 23.
  • Alton Nolen, a.k.a. Jah’Keem Yisrael, who allegedly beheaded a former co-worker in Oklahoma on September 25.
  • Martin Couture-Rouleau, a.k.a. Ahmad Rouleau, who ran over two Canadian soldiers near Montreal on October 20, killing one of them.
  • Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a.k.a. Joseph Paul Michael Abdallah Bulgasem Zehaf-Bibeau, who killed a Canadian soldier on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on October 22.
  • Major Nidal Hasan, the Killer Shrink of Fort Hood.

This is not new material — the clip first ran in late October, just after the string of attacks in Canada and New York — but what’s interesting about it is that it occurred on the Hannity program. It used to be that Mr. Hannity avoided discussing Islam, and rarely took a hard line about it when he did. But all that seems to have changed:

Hat tip: Vlad Tepes.
