Hence, those are the questions that our political leaders, their beneficiaries and their ideological bag-carriers fear to address publicly because they know that they cannot conceive of a way to reverse the course they have taken in their pursuit of power and wealth. Consequently, the reversal will have to come from elsewhere, from We The People, for it is our ecosystem that is on the cusp of extinction, not the parallel alien one being superimposed upon us from within and without.

What I find incomprehensible is the fact that it is not as if we didn’t have plenty of warning that maniacal fundamentalists were amongst us. In 1989, Supreme Leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa against Salman Rushdie, resulting in several failed assassination attempts on the author and attacks on connected individuals, including the Japanese translator Hitoshi Igarashi who was stabbed to death in 1991. That should have been sufficient warning for our inept governing classes to take pre-emptive action, but they did not, and it is why we now find ourselves in this parlous situation and, looking deeper, you will find this: a Mayor of London, an ex-Prime Minister now holidaying in California…

Of course, it’s not just Sunak legging it. Humza Yusaf, the former Scottish First Minister, says he is questioning his family’s future in the UK after far-right riots. He said the last week has been “utterly horrendous” as violent disorder has erupted in British towns and cities. We should be so lucky.
