Hardly any deportations: Four-fifths of all illegals remain in EU

The latest numbers from the European statistics authority Eurostat show a dangerous trend. Four-fifths of all illegal migrants remain in the EU, in spite of orders to leave. The Austrian Peoples’ Party speaks of a total breakdown of the Union.

Over one million illegal migrants in the EU

According to Eurostat, around 420,000 people have received orders to leave the EU because they have no valid right to stay. Only about 78,000 people have actually complied with this order. In spite of the order, a full 82% have remained.

That is the worst figure in the last ten years. Altogether, the Eurostat numbers show that about 1,059,000 people are illegally in the EU.

The rule of law capitulates to mass immigration

For the liberal delegation leader in the European Parliament, Harald Vilimsky, these devastating numbers show a capitulation of the rule of law to unrestricted mass immigration as well as a total failure of the EU. Because the already generously laid out asylum proceedings in many member states, in the rare cases of a negative ruling, have had no consequences. They simply stay. Vilimsky continues:

“The EU has long since surrendered its right to decide which and how many people can remain in their territory. Whoever is there remains — even if he has no right to do so. This policy is a real magnet for mass migration. The migration pact which is under discussion will change exactly nothing. On the one hand, because it contains nothing to enable the EU to close its external borders, and on the other hand, because it contributes nothing to solve the deportation dilemma.”
