Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/21/2023

The notorious Islamophobic Danish-Swedish firebrand Rasmus Paludan was granted a permit to hold a Koran-burning demonstration in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm today. Mr. Paludan’s action aroused the ire of the Turkish government, and in response a hard-line Islamic party in the Turkish parliament vowed to block Sweden’s attempt to join NATO.

In other news, the number of migrant deaths on the eastern route to Europe from Turkey through the Greek islands increased by almost three times in 2022, as compared with the previous year.

Electricity Prices Jumped More Than Double That of Inflation Last Year, Consumer Index Shows

Prices for electricity in the United States soared well above overall inflationary levels last year, putting an added squeeze on consumers already reeling from significantly inflated costs of most consumer goods.

The Consumer Price Index Summary released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics this month showed the 12-month average price of electricity last month jumping a whopping 14.3%, more than double the 6.5% of overall price increases.

Gas prices jumped even higher, showing a 19.3% increase year-over-year. Energy services overall were up more than 15%.

‘A Violent Start to the Year’: Murders Are Already Soaring in These Six Major Cities

Spates of deadly violence impacted several U.S. cities to start 2023, outpacing the same period in 2022, and experts variously called for proper police funding, community trust-building efforts and investment in at-risk youth in response.

Jacksonville, New Orleans, Minneapolis, the Las Vegas area, Washington, D.C. and Nashville all had more homicides or murders to start 2023 than during the same time last year. Experts advocated for reducing violent crime through strategic investments in community resources.

AG: Lawsuit Shows Ties of Big Tech, Federal Agencies to Suppress Speech

A “shadowy organization” in the Department of Homeland Security leads the effort to undermine free speech by coercing social media companies, Attorney General Andrew Bailey said Friday in a speech to the Missouri chapter of the Federalist Society.

In his first public speech to a nonpartisan audience since taking office Jan. 3, Bailey talked about what he calls “one of the most important First Amendment suits in a generation.”

Former Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed the civil lawsuit in May alongside Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, alleging the federal government’s collusion with social media companies.

Schmitt and Bailey have published some of the evidence of the case, largely emails from federal officials asking social-media employees to diminish messages that health officials deem misinformation during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aruna Miller Took Her Oath on Bhagavad Gita as First Hindu Lt Governor of Maryland. Islamists Opposed

Agni Paul | HENB | Annapolis (Maryland) US | Jan 19, 2023:: In a first, an Indian-American politician Aruna Miller (58) has created history by taking oath as the lieutenant governor of the state of Maryland adjacent to the American capital. Aruna, a former delegate to the Maryland House, is the state’s 10th lieutenant governor from the Democratic Party.

A lieutenant governor is the second highest government post in a state after the governor. Aruna has assumed this new responsibility when the Governor is out of the state or otherwise incapacitated. Born in Andhra Pradesh’ Hyderabad of India, Aruna also mentioned her family in her opening speech. Aruna said that she was seven years old when her family immigrated to America. Aruna’s entire family, new governor Wes Moore and state lawmakers were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Miller, a well acclaimed Transportation Engineer for last 25 yrs expressed her origin in Hindu faith and took the oath on Bhagavad Gita. Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller swore the oath of office on Wednesday (Jan 18), she placed her hand on a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a highest esteemed Hindu text — likely any first lieutenant governor to do so in the United state.

“Hinduism is not just a religion, I think it’s more of a culture,” Miller said. “We are seekers of peace and making sure that good things happen in the world and to others as well.”

But, the Ismist forces in the US retaliate to the fact of occupying a highest post by a Hindu lady in the country.

The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) opposed Aruna Miller’s oath taking on Bhagavad Gita and described Miller as an agent of Hindutva, Hindu Facism, RSS and BJP as such. IAMC took out a protest rally outside the Maryland House on Wednesday to express Islam’s intolerance to other faiths only to uphold its Jihadi mentality all over the world.

Describing Aruna Miller’s position as Lt Governor of Maryland as ‘dangerous’, IAMC demanded her resignation from the post to remove the ‘fascist encroachment’ in the state authority. IAMC took their twitter handle to oppose Aruna in a series of tweets…

Gunman in Walmart Shooting Told Workers at Nightly Meeting to Line Up Against Wall, Indiana Police Say

A former Walmart employee wounded one of his ex-co-workers Thursday night in a shooting at the Evansville, Indiana, store where he used to work, police said. The 25-year-old man entered a nightly team meeting with a gun and told a group of about a dozen people to line up against a wall, officials announced during a press conference Friday.

The overnight team leader ran from the room when the gunman, identified by police as Ronald Ray Mosley, had his back turned, and she called 911, Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin told reporters.

The gunman then shot a woman, Bolin said, and then ran from the room.

The team leader saw the gunman leave the break room where the meeting was being held, and she returned to help the wounded woman, Bolin said.

She helped the victim into another room, locked the door, turned off the lights, and they hid, the chief said. The gunman then returned to the break room.

“I have no doubt that he was going back to finish what he started, and we would probably have a dead victim today instead of one that’s alive,” Bolin said.

During Friday’s press conference, officials showed blurred body camera footage of officers confronting the gunman inside the store, and the shootout that resulted in his death.

“There was multiple times that he was actually shooting at officers before they actually were able to shoot him,” police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Gray told reporters during a briefing Thursday night.

The chief said a suicide note was later found at the gunman’s home.

Idaho Wins Lawsuit, Protects Life and Property From Illegal Encampments

Boise, Idaho — Governor Brad Little was victorious in winning a lawsuit stemming from an encampment on the Capitol Annex, protecting the state’s ability to prevent illegal encampments that harm public property and pose significant health and safety risks.

A judge’s decision earlier this month granted the Governor’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by activists challenging his administration’s actions to remove the encampment on public property.

“We’ve sent a clear message: Idaho does not tolerate illegal public encampments and destruction of public property. Idaho is not Portland, LA, San Francisco, or Seattle where public officials have engaged in failed experiments to permit and encourage unsafe and destructive public camping,” Governor Little said. “Our successful outcome is the result of a deliberate, careful, thoughtful strategy involving complex legal issues while ensuring the state meets is obligation to protect public health and safety.”

Individuals started gathering on the state property located at Jefferson and 6th streets in Boise one year ago in mid-January. Since then, there were a growing number of violations and dangerous conduct requiring increased calls for police service and enforcement action, including multiple instances of:

  • The presence of hypodermic needles
  • Bags containing human feces and urine
  • Soiled clothing
  • Vomit-covered tents
  • Rotting food
  • Abandoned property
  • Violence
  • Drug abuse and distribution
  • Garbage

‘Is it Time to Apologize to the World?’ Moment Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla Refuses to Respond to Questions About His $50m Pandemic Salary and Company Profits Tripling

This is the moment the CEO of Pfizer was pummeled with questions as he left the World Economic Forum’s annual conference in Davos.

Albert Bourla remained silent as ‘citizen journalists’ followed him through the snowy Swiss streets asking him questions about the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday.

The Pfizer chief was asked how long he knew the vaccine didn’t prevent transmission and how much money he personally made from its sale.

After a couple of minutes of what the two men grilling him called a ‘walking scrum’, Bourla scurried up a flight of stairs as directed by members of his entourage.

It comes after it was revealed that the Pfizer CEO personally earned $50million in compensation across 2021 and 2022 and the company’s revenue tripled to more than $100billion since 2019.

The two men, who referred to themselves as ‘citizen journalists’, were reporting for the media outlet Rebel News.

‘We’re not accredited media here. We’re on the outside of the perimeter, so he’s only used to the softballs from CNN, MSNBC and people like that,’ said one of the two.

The clip began with one of the reporters, Canadian Ezra Levant, pointing Bourla out before beginning cordially with the question: ‘Mr. Bourla, can I ask you?

‘When did you know that the vaccines didn’t stop transmission? How long did you know that without saying it publicly?’

The CEO at that point made his one and only comment: ‘Thank you very much.’

Large Yachts of the Super-Rich Spared From EU’s New CO2 Tax

Since 2005, some large industrial companies have had to buy certificates for their CO2 emissions. This is a result of the EU’s emissions trading system, which has been gradually expanded since then. Since 2012, for example, airline companies have also had to obtain certificates for intra-European flights.

The system is to be expanded again, the EU decided at the end of 2022. In future, road traffic and buildings will also be included. Many are celebrating the decision to expand emissions trading to include shipping as a major breakthrough. But there are some curious exceptions.

From 2024, only large passenger and cargo ships over 5000 gross register tons will be affected. Owners or renters of lavish yachts can rest easy: they will benefit from an exemption rule in CO2 emissions trading. This was announced by the EU Commission when asked by the German broadcaster NDR.

Mild Weather Thus Far Saving Europe From an Energy Crisis

According to Bloomberg, various factors, including clement weather, alternative gas suppliers, efforts to curb demand and sufficient gas reserves, are playing a role in keeping prices relatively stable.

Spain: Thousands Stage Anti-Government Protest in Madrid

Tens of thousands of people packed into central Madrid on Saturday against the left-wing government of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

The protest, called by dozens of right-leaning civil society groups and backed by the center-right Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party, came in a key election year for Spain.

The central government said around 30,000 people gathered at Madrid’s Cibeles Square, while organizers said some 700,000 people attended.

Sanchez labeled a ‘traitor’

The demonstrators waved Spanish flags and chanted “Sanchez, resign!” or “traitor!” as they denounced the government.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal told the crowd the government had “trampled the constitution by locking up Spaniards,” in reference to COVID lockdowns, which were initially among the harshest in the world.

Speaking to reporters, Abascal denounced “the worst government in history” that “has divided Spaniards and freed rapists and coup leaders.”

Lacking a parliamentary majority, Sanchez has been forced to negotiate with Catalan and Basque separatists to pass bills.

The right was angered by the government’s decision to abolish the crime of sedition, of which nine separatist leaders were convicted over their role in the Catalonia region’s failed independence bid in 2017.

The UK is Now a Nation of Stay-at-Homes: As Mail on Sunday’s Poll Reveals Cost-of-Living Crisis is Forcing People to Cancel Netflix and Cutback on Takeaways

Voters are cancelling TV subscriptions such as Netflix and cutting back on takeaways as their main weapons in the cost-of-living crisis, a Mail on Sunday ‘state of the nation’ poll has found.

The exclusive Deltapoll survey found that four out of ten people have bought fewer clothes and takeaways, while one in three go on fewer nights out. But for 23 per cent, staying in has also become less enjoyable, as they have cancelled ‘non-essential outgoings’ such as TV subscriptions.

Households have a negative view of their economic prospects over the coming year, with 48 per cent thinking they will worsen. Worryingly, 15 per cent say they cannot pay their bills and another 36 per cent will not be able to pay them within months. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will be concerned by the finding that, despite the Tories’ traditional lead on economic matters, 47 per cent think Labour, under Sir Keir Starmer and Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, is the party best equipped to deal with cost-of-living issues, compared with 29 per cent for the Conservatives.
