Britain’s Wholesale Electricity Prices Soar to Record High as Cold Weather Sets in

Energy prices in Britain peaked at a record high on Monday as recent sub-zero temperatures brought the country’s reliance on renewable energy sources under scrutiny.

Between 1-2 p.m. (GMT) on Monday, wholesale energy prices reached £1,650 per MWh, far above the yearly average price of £200 per MWh, due to a combination of cold weather, ongoing issues with supply, and the particularly low efficiency of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

Fed Slows Interest Rate Increases With 50-Basis-Point Hike, But Signals More to Come

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points, or 0.5 percent, slowing its campaign to cool the economy amid early signs that stubbornly high inflation is finally starting to ease.

The widely expected move puts the key benchmark federal funds rate at a range of 4.25% to 4.5%, the highest since 2007, from near-zero in March. It marks the seventh consecutive rate increase this year and places interest rates in firmly restrictive territory. While the rate hike is slightly smaller than the 75-basis-point increases approved at the past four meetings, it is still large by historical standards.

In addition to the large rate hike, Fed officials laid out an aggressive path of rate increases for next year. New economic projections released after the two-day meeting show policymakers expect rates to rise to 5.1% in 2023, a far higher level than the 4.6% rate officials last projected in September, according to the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) dot plot of individual members’ expectations.

Fox News Poll: Americans Are Down on the Economy But Hopeful for the Country

At year’s end, Americans’ economic views are decidedly negative. Most continue to say the economy is in bad shape and nearly twice as many think it will get worse next year as think it will get better. Inflation is a hardship for three-quarters, while another 6-in-10 rate their personal financial situation negatively.

And yet, a 53% majority is hopeful about the future of the country, a notable increase from the 43% who were hopeful one year ago. The increase in optimism comes from both Democrats (+11 points since December 2021) and Republicans (+13 points). Still, Democrats (71%) are considerably more optimistic than Republicans (42%) and independents (40%).

That’s according to the latest Fox News national survey of registered voters, released Wednesday.

New Payroll Taxes Mean Canadians Will Lose $300 in Take-Home Pay, Says CFIB

The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB) is warning that scheduled 2023 payroll tax hikes will mean that every Canadian will see $305 less in take-home pay on the first day of the year.

Beginning on Jan. 1 Canada Pension Plan premiums will go up to 7.3%, costing up to $255 more in contributions per employee. On the same day, Employment Insurance premiums will increase by 5.2%.

“The maximum additional amount that an employee will pay in EI and CPP contributions is $304.71. It may not seem like a lot, but $300 can cost one family a trip to the grocery store or pay for their transportation or utility bills. Payroll tax increases will hit Canadians at a time when most are already seeing their cost of living quickly increase,” said CFIB president Dan Kelly.

62% of Democrats May Have ‘Changed’ 2020 Election Vote if They Knew Truth of Hunter Biden’s Laptop

A staggering 62 percent of Democrat voters say it’s “likely” that they would have “changed” their vote during the 2020 presidential election if they knew the truth about the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, a new poll has revealed.

The survey, by TIPP Insights, found that 67 percent of American voters overall believe that the FBI and the intelligence community (IC) “misled the public” by claiming that the “Laptop from Hell” was part of a “Russian disinformation” campaign.

While it’s no surprise that Republicans feel that the suppression of the story corrupted the vote, the shock is how many Democrats and independent voters feel the election may have been swayed.

Ronnie Reel, who was released on time served, had faced life in prison for forcibly sodomizing the minor. Reel is the victim’s uncle.

EU and Poland Strike Deal Over Judicial Legislation to Unlock EU Recovery Funds

The European Commission has reportedly accepted plans proposed by the Polish government regarding legislative reform of its judiciary, which should unlock EU recovery funds, according to Poland’s commercial radio station RMF FM, which has spoken to a number of unnamed high-ranking EU officials.

The legislation will now be submitted to the Polish parliament and awaits the commission’s formal approval.

Should an agreement be reached, Poland will now be able to file its request for payment of EU recovery funds without fear of immediate rejection. The EU commission will have two months to process the request for the first tranche of the EU recovery funds owed to Poland. This is why some EU officials have joked that “the compromise is for Christmas and the payment will be for Easter.”

German ‘Terror Raid’ Delivers Different Assessments in US, Russia

The New York Times noted in a headline: “Germany arrests 25 people suspected of plotting government overthrow.” NBC also reported about a “right-wing extremist coup” and the Washington Post detailed the “German coup attempt”. CBS News hinted at ties to America’s “QAnon” group which has been “accused of plotting to overthrow the government”.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre read from what appeared to be a prepared text: “We applaud the German government and its law enforcement agencies and special forces for their zeal in countering violent extremism and for the safety of their citizens and… their government institutions.” When asked, the spokeswoman said that US authorities would support German law enforcement agencies if necessary.

The echo from Russia was quite different. There, former Russian President Medvedev, currently Deputy Chairman of the National Security Council, commented on his Telegram channel: “It is all pure provocation and conspiracy theory.”

UK: ‘Racist’ Mathematics Should be ‘Decolonized’

This is what the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) claims, a charity that acts in an advisory capacity to the higher education regulator. It called for “decolonizing” the math curriculum in colleges.

In future, students should be taught what connections mathematicians had to the slave trade, racism or Nazis.

However, the request did not go unchallenged. Leading British scientists expressed concern in an open letter that maths and degrees are being “politicised”. The letter stated that while the signatories “abhor racism, one can abhor racism without subscribing to the theory of decoloniality”. Moreover, “decolonization theory” is not mathematics.

Explainer: Why is Russia Trying So Hard to Capture the Small Ukrainian City of Bakhmut?

Russian forces have been attempting to seize Bakhmut in Ukraine’s Donetsk region for at least seven months. But in recent weeks, the battle in and around the city has become one of the fiercest of the nine-month war in Ukraine.

Bakhmut, which sits above a vast salt mine and is famed for its Soviet-era winery, has been badly damaged — and in parts totally destroyed — by constant shelling.

Russia’s determination to take Bakhmut has puzzled many observers, who question Moscow’s huge commitment of resources to the fight despite the city’s relative lack of strategic significance.

The Moscow Times considers why the Kremlin might be so keen to capture the city.

What appeal does Bakhmut hold for the Russian Armed Forces?

Seizing Bakhmut would give Russia a small, strategic foothold to launch a wider offensive against the Ukrainian-held cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk to the north.

Bakhmut also sits on a crucial highway that runs diagonally through Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

But Russia’s focus on the city has nonetheless baffled analysts, who point out that the battle to take Bakhmut has cost Moscow dearly in both men and equipment.

“No one really understands the significance of Bakhmut,” said defense analyst Konrad Muzyka of Poland-based Rochan Consulting.

“No one can really explain… why Russians are fighting so ferociously for it.”

One possible reason for Russia pouring so many men and resources into the battle is that it has become a question of military prestige — after months of trying to take the city, Moscow is reluctant to admit defeat.

EU Countries Prepare to Send Thousands of Illegal Migrants Back to Poland Where They Can Gain Citizenship After Just a Year

Poland has long been opposed to illegal immigration or migrant quotas, but the country will be forced to receive potentially thousands of illegal migrants in the near future, as they can gain citizenship in Poland after just one year.

The problem has to do with Belarus’ decision to allow thousands of migrants to cross into Polish territory over the last few years, which Poland has described as a form of “hybrid warfare.” While those migrants usually used Poland as a transit country, Poland remains the first EU country they set foot in within the European Union. That means all EU countries have the right to send those migrants back to Poland.
