Breaking: Twitter Fact Checks Biden Over Gas Price

Yet again, President Joe Biden has taken credit for lowering gas prices, to which he received a “fact check” from Twitter’s Birdwatch function.

In a Sunday morning tweet, the 79-year-old president said “Right now, the most common price at gas stations across the country is $3.19 per gallon. That’s progress.”

Birdwatch, “a community-based approach to misinformation” that was launched in January 2021, flagged Biden’s post with added context.

Cost-of-Living Worries Mount in France as Biting Cold Sets in

At least 92 percent of French people are concerned about the level of rising inflation in France, a survey carried out by the Odoxa group has found.

The results of the survey published in French media showed energy, food and inflation are among the main worries of the French.

Some 75 percent of respondents believe the country’s economic difficulties will be more severe in 2023, said BFM Business news channel. Some 78 percent said they are “less confident,” compared to 22 percent who are “more confident,” it said.

Over a third of respondents believe inflation is above 15 percent, indicating their distrust of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) which has recorded inflation of 12.5 percent.

Meta Reportedly Readying to Fire 1000s This Week

Just over a week ago, Meta CFO Dave Wehner confidently stated that the not-so-giant tech firm will basically freeze headcount and limit new hiring…

Our pace of hiring slowed in the third quarter, consistent with our previously-stated plans. We added 3,700 net new hires in Q3, down from our Q2 net additions of 5,700 despite Q3 typically being a seasonally stronger hiring period. We expect hiring to slow dramatically going forward and to hold headcount roughly flat next year relative to current levels…

We are making significant changes across the board to operate more efficiently. We are holding some teams flat in terms of headcount, shrinking others and investing headcount growth only in our highest priorities. As a result, we expect headcount at the end of 2023 will be approximately in-line with third quarter 2022 levels.

At the time, we were a little surprised (given the scale of the losses)…

With the shares down 36% since then (and is down over 70% this year), something has apparently changed extremely fast.

The Wall Street Journal reports that, according to people familiar with the matter, Meta is planning to begin large-scale layoffs this week.

Russian Attacks Leave Kyiv, Other Regions in the Dark; Iran Admits Supplying Drones to Russia: Ukraine Updates

While the heavy fighting in Ukraine is concentrated in the east and south, the capital of Kyiv in the northcentral region and its surrounding areas are subjected to a different kind of assault — one relying on suffering and disruption as weapons.

Under duress because of Russian attacks that have destroyed 40% of the country’s energy infrastructure, Ukraine’s electricity operator has announced rolling blackouts for Kyiv and six other nearby regions, including Kharkiv. Unscheduled emergency outages are expected as well.

“We are doing everything to avoid this,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko told state media. “But let’s be frank, our enemies are doing everything for the city to be without heat, without electricity, without water supply, in general, so we all die. And the future of the country and the future of each of us depends on how prepared we are for different situations.”

Power outages caused by Russia’s drone and missile attacks have affected 16 provinces and forced Kyiv officials to contemplate conducting mass evacuations. They plan to establish about 1,000 heating shelters but noted that may not be enough for the city’s 3 million people. Kyiv’s average temperatures in the winter range from the low 20s to the low 30s.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday in his nightly video address that about 4.5 million people had lost power, telling the nation: “We must get through this winter and be even stronger in the spring than now.”

“You Think You Can Run Away?”: The Persecution of Christians, September 2022

The following are among the abuses Muslims inflicted on Christians throughout the month of September 2022:

The Muslim Slaughter of Christians

Azerbaijan/Armenia: On Sept. 13, Azerbaijan launched drones, artillery, and mortars on several Armenian villages; the bombardment continued for two days. More than 100 Armenian soldiers were killed. Although widely seen as a territorial dispute between (Christian) Armenia and (Muslim) Azerbaijan, jihadist hate has long fueled the conflict. During this most recent assault, for instance, in the words of an Armenian military official, the Azerbaijanis:

“committed atrocities in our combat positions against our servicemen, including women soldiers. I cannot find words to describe how they dismembered a female soldier, cut off her legs, fingers and stripped her naked. This is unheard of cruelty.”

They said Victorian pigs were being locked in small stalls, despite the pork industry committing to a phase-out of the practice back in 2017.

Major Bolsonaro Supporters Are Censored on Twitter in Brazil

Nikolas Ferreira, who was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has had his Twitter account withheld. Ferreira is an avid supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was defeated by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the election that concluded late last month.

When an account is “withheld” it is often not banned from the platform but blocked in select countries; in this case, Brazil, and from a legal order by the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes.

Ferreira broke the record of an elected parliamentarian with the most votes in Minas Gerais in history, with 1.5 million votes. The 26-year-old federal deputy shared the suspension notice on Instagram. Twitter claimed that he was suspended because of a complaint by the TSE.

How Italy Deals With Asylum Seekers: Sicilian Authorities Refuse to Let 35 Migrants Off Charity Rescue Ship as Country’s New Far Right Regime Led by Giorgia Meloni Cracks Down on Mediterranean People-Smuggling

Italian authorities have refused to let 35 migrants disembark a charity rescue ship at Sicily, as the new far-right-led government attempts to cracks down on people-smuggling from the Mediterranean.

Giorgia Meloni’s new government is allowing only those identified as vulnerable to disembark from four ships docked in the port of Catania.

The Humanity 1 has been ordered to vacate the port after disembarking 144 rescued migrants — which included women with children, more than 100 unaccompanied minors and people with medical emergencies.

The captain refused to leave the port ‘until all survivors rescued from distress at sea have been disembarked,’ said SOS Humanity, the German charity that operates the ship. The vessel remained moored at the port.

Later today, a second charity ship arrived in Catania, and the vetting process was expected to be repeated with the 572 migrants aboard the Geo Barents ship, operated by Doctors Without Borders.

A Liberation Theologist Offers Salvation to Minority White Supremacists

by Daniel Greenfield

Miguel De La Torre, a former president of the Society of Christian Ethics, showed up at a small Catholic university, telling students that minorities can be white, but that they can also be saved.

“Those of us who are colored, some of us can also be white,” the professor of Latinx Studies at the Iliff School of Theology assured all races suffering from whiteness. “But the good news is there is salvation.”

The lecture by De La Torre, who is also an ordained minister, claimed that minorities “with colonized minds seek to assimilate to a Euroamerican version of Christianity” and proposed a post-colonial alternative based “on the revolutionary activities of the Young Lords”.

Students at Carlow University, founded by the Sisters of Mercy, could look forward to abandoning “EuroAmerican Christianity” for the much more authentic theology of a racist Puerto Rican street gang…

  1. First, I will thank the Gods of Information and Progress, who allow me to read the press in all the languages that I do not know (I do not know any language).

I monitor the European press. The opinion of the Norwegians on what is happening in Ukraine is strikingly different, for example, from the opinion of the Swedes.
They seem to be the only ones who have retained their sanity, judging by this article.

May the Gods of information and progress help you to read it.

(Ok, I think today I have a bad case of sarcasm)

Can I have one too? I mean a machinegun. I already own a car, but not a gun. And some ammo.
    Why do I want it?
No, no, I am not a gun nut.
I need it for ahem, other reasons. You know, personal. You know, the hush-hush stuff.

Oh, then I can have an APC too. And maybe even a MBT.
I`ll take two. You know, hush-hush.

    (No, I am not drunk!)
